A selection of different BBQ sauces on the table to try. Cole slaw and a baked sweet potato with cinnamon butter to put on it. After four rounds of ribs I was properly stuffed. Yum! We decided on BBQ for dinner and have never tried Sonny's. Found a special with ribs and pulled pork and two sides plus bread. Perfect! Really loved the dry rub ribs with some original sauce on them. Ordered the sweet potato and Mac and cheese sides that were good too. I always judge good bbq on the corn muffin and this one was very good! Our server did a great job and we brought home two pounds of pulled pork after tasting it to use later. Great night out! read more

Looking for Lunch along a busy street that has almost any kind of food you want we stopped for some BBQ. Plenty of parking available and as soon as you enter there is the bar & hostess stand. Booth & table seating present. Per usual BBQ restaurants - roll of paper towels & BBQ sauce a plenty. Ordered the Regular Brisket Sandwich with one side - French Fries and the Pick of the Pit Combos - 1/4 Chicken ( your choice of dark or white meat) & Beef Brisket - chopped. The chopped Brisket has more marbling than sliced - depending on your preference. The Pick of the Pit Combo gets 2 sides - coleslaw & French fries was the selection today. The Coleslaw was chopped and mayo based with not a lot of flavor (could have used a little bit more sugar for sweetness) and the French Fries are Crinkle Cut, also comes with a slice of Garlic bread or Cornbread. The Beef Brisket was tender and had a pretty good flavor. I ordered the white 1/4 chicken and while the chicken had a nice color to it, it was bland. Beverage glasses are huge and happy to say Coke products are served. All the servers offered to provide to go cups for the beverages which is really nice. My friend and I stopped in after an appointment at the doctor's office. I got the Cuban sandwich with the tater tots. He got the ribs. I have ate a lot of Cuban sandwiches, but I never in my life ate one as the one I ate there. It was really delicious. And I love how you got a large glass of the tea. Easy parking best food. Myself, my husband and a few of his family members ate here this past Saturday. I had never been to this Sonny's location before, but we had a good experience. There was no wait time and we were seated quickly. The décor included wood trim, lots of chopped wood, and big comfy booths. I started with the sweet tea, which was fresh and delicious. My husband and I got the BBQ pork eggrolls to start. They were crispy and delicious. We both got the pick of the pit two meat deal. I got pulled pork, bone in chicken, BBQ baked beans, tater tots, and garlic toast. It was a great deal for $15. Two of the sides in our order were incorrect, but our waitress quickly corrected it, and let us keep the sides that were incorrect. We would definitely eat here again. The food was absolutely delicious. However, the interaction with the drive-thru worker left a lot to be desired. I found her to be impatient, rude, and unfriendly. When placing my order, before I could respond to one question, she was barking out another question. I had not seen her before and maybe she was new but that did not excuse her attitude. When I spoke with the manager, his attitude wasn't too much better. I order from Sonny's quite often and have never experienced this type of service before. Will I return? We've been fans of Sonny's since college days at University of Florida in Gainesville, when the ambiance was sitting at indoor rows of picnic tables/benches. We love their sliced pork, garlic bread, Sonny's beans, any they're aunt sweet tea. Over the years Sonny's has changed, with newly designed restaurants including bars serving alcohol replacing the salad bars (I think this was a change due to COVID.) My family still loves Sonny's and we're regulars in Gainesville or wherever we see them while traveling. That being said, we often find that their sliced pork and brisket are more dry lately, not as good as past years. Maybe due to restaurants being busier and serving so many more items. This hasn't been at just one location, but multiple. Food is still good, just not as amazing as it once was. read more

As we were on our way to our hotel, we saw a sign for this restaurant. It happened to be located at our exit, so we decided to grab take-out. The staff was helpful and answered all of our questions. We decided on the BBQ pork egg rolls. There were three large rolls in the order. We also ordered two of the Pick of the Pit Combo. One with pulled pork, baby back ribs, tator tots, coleslaw, and cornbread. The other was beef brisket, baby back ribs, mac 'n cheese, tator tots, and cornbread. All of the food, except the tator tots (which didn't travel well), was excellent! This is a place I wouldn't hesitate to order from again. read more

I can't stand when I'm trying to stuff my face and I'm constantly being asked how things are going or if I need anything...!?! When I saw the brisket when I walked in, I told it that You Belong With Me. The server greeted me warmly, so there was no Bad Blood. I ordered myself some corn nuggets and the brisket and it was NOT a Cruel Summer. It was incredible. I felt Enchanted. It was a Love Story about meat. I am usually an great fan of Sonny 's, but after today I'm not sure l will go back. I had the St Louis ribs. I got 5 small ribs, not enough for the price charged and not enough for an adult meal. The coleslaw which is usually the best in town was not sweet. It was lacking. I usually get excellent service. Today it was slow and lacking! Sonny's is a great BBQ spot all across Florida. This location is a busier location because it's off College Rd. But it is for sure still worth the stop. They remodeled this location so it looks much nicer then the older Sonny's around town. The best thing about this restaurant is the size of pop you get. It's gotta be like 44 ounces. Most people can't finish it in one sitting, I'm not most people, I'll put back three before I take a fourth one to go. The sandwiches come out dry, but they leave lots of BBQ on the table so you can try some out and drown your sandwich in your kind of BBQ sauce. The meats are smoked on site and has the feel of a true southern bbq house of times past. Friday Jan 1 4:30pm. I have been a regular customer at the Sonny's for many many years, and I have never been treated like I was tonight. I came in and sat at the bar where I always sit. Somebody usually confirms seeing me. This time they were very busy and did not do such. However people that came in AFTER me were promptly greeted, orders taken, and were served at the bar right next to me. I even politely asked when will someone take my order??!! I sat there for 30 minutes in amazement without any recognition. This was a very disturbing experience for me especially being an extremely loyal customer of Sonny's. There's so much competition in town that I guess I will have to now start checking out. read more

When we first moved to Ocala 28 years ago, Sonny's was pretty much the only chain BBQ place. For a long time, it was our go-to place to feed our family inexpensively. Some time in the early 2000s, the quality of the food nose dived, there were other better BBQ places, and we stopped going there. Today we were VERY pleasantly surprised by the taste and quality of the food. The BBQ was excellent. They offer three BBQ sauces ~ Smokin', Sweet and Sizzlin' ~ I prefer the Sizzlin' for there is a little spicy kick to the sauce that brings out the succulent meat flavors. (see pictures) Service was impeccable (Ms. Carmen) considering the large influx of carnivorous food lovers that flock to this local establishment ~ no reservations. So Sonny's is really good about supporting local causes and this one was connected to youth sports, I think As for the food... Brisket-way over cooked. Prob to high a temp. Did not have any real bark on it and was very dry. Pulled Pork-pretty damn good. Flavorful but greasy. Very moist. My favorite thing today Sliced pork-Too thinly sliced and very bland. Fatty as well Smoked Chicken-As good as you can get in a chain. The rub on the chicken should be used more in other items. Good flavor. Cornbread-muffin style and is very good. Sweet moist with the top having a good crunch Overall food rating C- Ambiance...Such a great upgrade. Love the sit up bar. Bartenders waiting on you and a 40in flatscreen to watch sports. This alone would bring me back. Sabrina is awesome. Very attentive and knowledgeable. Great friendly service from here. I would bring the wife back here and grab a beer and snack on some of that pulled pork. Maybe some wings. Actually if I came back, I would order some fries well done, have them put the pulled pork on top, add coleslaw and drench all of that with the sweet BBQ sauce. Wash it down with a beer. We are Sonny's fans from way back. During our visit to this location, the restuarant was quite chaotic. There weren't lines or a big crowd, but lots of confusion. Our server was helpful. He explained all the specials and options on the menu. Service was kind of spotty, but the server gave us 100%. The salad bar was continually partially empty, but what was available was traditional Sonny's and delicious. My husband got an AYCE special. He loved it and was satisfied with all the different options. It took some time to get his meal and refills. When it came to the table it was hot and delicious. This outlet has the new decor. The new Sonny's is very cute and trendy. The menu and food quality luckily has stayed the same. Hope they work out the kinks. read more

Undeniably Sonny's has some great food. I'm particularly partial to the Brunswick Stew. I have no idea why they took it off the menu but just order it and you'll see how good & filling it is! I also love the remodel and the bar area looks fab. Last year Sonny's was one of the vendors at a Yelp Elite event and what made a great impression was their brisket & mac bar. Their special Elite coupons were a bonus so I started coming here more often for lunch. For some reason I was always seated on the right side of the store and I quickly discovered this was not where the best seats were. Why? It seems all the employees take their break or hang out in the front booth by the swinging doors that enter into the kitchen. Every time I've been there I've witnessed the employees and their shenanigans but I guess they have to eat somewhere. It's just always so many at once. One occasion put me on alert though. The table was filled with employees eating and loud and the person running the DT had no customers so she was just standing there eating fries with her bare hand talking to her daughter. When someone would pull up to the DT window she would leave to take care of them are return. The next time I came in was the straw that broke the camel's back. Again seated on the right side behind the "employee's table' I began eating my food to look up and see one employee standing while braiding another one's hair. (see photo) I gasped & put my fork down as I heard a male voice yell "you can't do that - it's against the health code". It was an elder man that walked up to their booth. The girl having her hair braided structed the other girl to ignore him - keep braiding" and the elder gentleman kept yelling. Then he walked right into the kitchen and found a male employee to continue to yell at. Of course the girls scattered and disappeared real quick. The male he found in the kitchen was complacent and did nothing. The gentleman then yelled that he's leaving and he and everyone he knows will never be back ever. He grabbed his wife and walked out and then another table that was a witness followed suit. I sat there feeling ill and asked my server for a take out box. Weeks followed and I debated if I should write a negative review or maybe contact Kathy at HQ. I had mixed emotions and put it off but as you can see am finally writing this. I despise negative reviews. The other location in town is not managed this way. but I just cannot get that entire scene out of my head.
