We have been driving past here for a while and have wanted to give Sonny's a try, so here we are today for lunch. It's probably been 30+ years since I've been to a Sonny's which was back in Albany, I used to love it. Today was more like a "well it's ok". We walked in and were greeted quickly by a friendly host and seated in a nice booth. Another reviewer talked about the black walls and LED lights and yeah, that made for some lighting odd contrasts. The menu is large and there is a seasonal spring menu with some specials. Oddly I did not see prices on the seasonally menu, but that could have been the odd lighting. I ordered the seasonal brisket grilled cheese with fries, Megan had the sliced pork sandwich with a baked potato. The brisket grilled cheese was strangely bland. It is advertised as brisket in queso sauce between two slices of cheese on Texas toast. For all that cheese I didn't taste it much. I tried dipping it in each of four (original, smokey, spicy, and sweet) sauces. The sauce fully overwhelmed the sandwich. The fries were crinkle cut which is the only way to make a BBQ fry and they were near perfect. The pork had a kind of warmed over flavor to it, not bad, just ok. The potato came with a tube of sour cream and two pats of butter. Service was excellent and our waitress brought us new drinks to take with us. With more flavorful food I would eat here again. read more

I wanted to share some praise for Ashley at the Sonny's on Zebulon Rd. The first thing I noticed was her hilarious badge reel that said, 'I'm nicer than my face looks'--it immediately set a great tone! During my visit, I watched her manage the drive-thru window and the takeout counter at the same time. Even while doing the work of two people, she remained incredibly kind, kept a smile on her face, and was so attentive to detail. My order was perfect. Ordered the brisket plate and was very disappointed in it. It was way over cooked and tough. Sierra, my waitress, was very awesome. Never let my drink glass get halfway empty. The service was probably some of the best since I've been coming here. The restaurant was pretty clean and was not busy at the time I ate there. Ambiance - The harsh LED white lights against the black booths and pony walls give Sonny's the atmosphere of a bus station bathroom. Warmth of yesteryear is gone and in its place is stark, cold dullness that is equally matcheby the thermostat setting. Also the lighting greatly diminished the appearance of my food; pork looks gray. read more

After driving most of the day, we cleared Atlanta and decided it was time for a break. We saw signs for Sonny's BBQ and the thought some finger licking ribs sounded like a winner. Unfortunately, it didn't quite work out that way. Sonny's definitely gets 5 stars for friendless and 5 stars for cleanliness. Unfortunately, the star of this show was not the food. We shared a Sonny's Sampler platter. It was loaded down with sliced pork, brisket, 1/4 chicken (all white meat), 2 ribs, slaw, beans AND garlic bread. Once again, the star was not the BBQ, it was the bread. While the chicken was moist, it was not juicy. The rest of the meat, including the ribs, was extremely dry although the sweet and savory sauce did help a bit. The BBQ beans were good at first but became cloyingly sweet as we ate. The homemade slaw was perhaps the biggest disappointment. It was barely dressed - it didn't taste like much more than a bowl of chopped cabbage. Only because we shared, Sonny's didn't break the bank for us - our check was under $22 and we still have enough meat left over for a sandwich tomorrow. Luckily we didn't have to drive too far off the interstate to find Sonny's - we'll definitely drive on by on our way home. read more

Awful! They were out of nearly all of their meats and didn't even have any baked potatoes!! They should've put a sign up at the entrance to let people know that they were out of so many things. But what I did order was lukewarm and very dry and verrrrry chewy!!! Beware if you don't want a cracked tooth!!! As for "decor", This place is like stepping back in the 80s. The booths are worn and scratched. The server was helpful and friendly and that was the only bright part of this visit. As for the other servers, they seemed more preoccupied with cleaning tables and putting everything away, even though it was still nearly 90 minutes before closing time... Really ?!?! We're on a long trip and at 7:30pm we decided to run through the drive through.... They informed us before ordering that they have no pork - no smoked turkey- no sliced, no chopped- no anything! Wow! So this is chain BBQ... not bad but not great. We had a Sonny's on our way to the beach that we liked but it had closed years ago so we thought why not. We stopped here on our way to Asheville and it was packed. We only waited a minute and the server came immediately to the table. The sauces are good but the meat lacks the smoked flavor BBQ should have. I should have listened to Rodney Scott- he says if you can't see and small smoke then you shouldn't eat there. I hate giving low reviews. But this experience all around was poor. We waited at hostess stand for several minutes as employees walked by and did not even acknowledge us. There were 4 other groups of people waiting too. This should have been our sign to go. We were seated and able to order our drinks and food quickly. The size of the appetizer was much smaller than previous visits. They did not have Mac and cheese and didn't offer to sub out. Then it was left on my bill. The meat was so greasy that my daughter wasn't even able to each her very grissley brisket sandwich. The service was not bad but also not good either. It was 14 years since I've ate there. Although everything was different the smell was exactly the same. The food was wonderful . Our server was the Best. She was knowledgeable and knew her menu. Even though it was completely different it was very warm feeling, clean and just homey. Lots of memories I am very glad it made it through Covid. Pros. Food, Prices was reasonable. For a fast food BBQ location, this is pretty good! The food was hot and fresh. The service was fast, we did go early so I'm not too sure if it's like that in the evenings. We were able to chat and eat comfortably without any loud music. A nice place for a quick BBQ craving. read more

The best thing I can say about it is that it wasn't the worst barbecue that I've ever had. I ordered the three meat combo with two sides. I had the baby back ribs, St. Louis style ribs, and brisket. The baby back ribs were the smallest ribs I've ever seen, a little larger than a chickens ribs I'd say lol. Both the baby back ribs and the St. Louis style ribs had very little meat and the meat that it did have was dried out as if it had been sitting in a warmer for a long period of time. All three of the meats had very little seasoning on it and relied on the barbecue sauce for flavor. My baked potato was also a victim of long-term heat warming as the flesh of the potato was not white. It was more of a brownish color like the skin. The butter and sour cream were prepackaged, which was kind of odd to me in a restaurant like that. The best thing on the plate where the barbecue baked beans. Service was less than spectacular as my waitress barely said two words the whole time I was there.. Pulled pork was sauced already, ribs were room temp, but with a couple of sides it was a decent but not great meal. My niece and I went here for lunch today. Checked Yelp, as always, and was confused about the reviews and spread of the ratings. But I decided to check it out. And I was glad I did. I ordered the BBQ Pork Egg rolls with a side of slaw. I loved the egg rolls, they were different and definitely a winner. The slaw was the usual and I was glad for that. I've ordered slaw at other places and sometimes what you get is well, interesting!! My niece ordered a shredded pork sandwich with a baked potato and she said it was good. Clean, good atmosphere and tremendous food! The young lady who helped my wife and I was very nice and prompt with her service. It was a busy Sunday but they were on the money. Been coming to this Sonny's for years and it's HANDS DOWN the best Sonny's in our part of North GA (Hall, Gwinnett, Barrow, Jackson, Banks, etc). They can honestly be sketchy at times, but this location has been on the money for a while, really since it's remodel. It sounds silly, but a nice clean, cool indoor restaurant with solid food and good service (and Tea to die for) it's worth its weight in gold when you consider what the alternative often is. read more

So, so good. We stopped here on a trip through Commerce. The food was amazing. I had a grilled cheese with brisket on garlic bread. Came in at 8:05 PM. They close at 9:00. The place was a mess and the hostess was pointing our how bad her job was. Another waitress was complaing by the bar about people coming in late. As we were seated the waitress cleaning the table told the hostess she was done and to not seat us in her section. We were directed to another table. Our food came out wrong. Please don't eat here. Read the reviews - I did but I wanted to give this place a chance. Inedible, tasteless cold mush arrived at our table 3 minutes after ordering. A plate of gray. I ordered the sampler to try everything. Honestly - was all dry, cold crap. Please, when you go speak to the manager. I actually laughed out loud with that experience. He looks like a school boy waiting for a bus that he missed. Finally - I swear this happened, verbatim: Me: what drink is this? Serve: it's a gin and tonic Me: ahh ok - that's not tonic water. Server: no - it's soda. Me: right - that's not what we ordered. Server: that's what my manager told me to put in I didn't really know where to go from there - so I paid for that drink.
