After always seeing commercials for this place on TV, my friends and I were excited to finally give it a try on our drive down to LA. We were beyond disappointed--it was DISGUSTING! So disgusting that we couldn't finish our food even though we had been starving for hours on our drive down! We ordered jumbo popcorn chicken, sonic burger, cheese tots, and two shakes-- the shakes were the only okay items on the menu, but how can you really go wrong with a shake? After seeing their tempting shake commercials we were expecting something special, but their shakes were not even as good as In-N-Out or Jack in the Box shakes. The rest of the food was horrendous! The jumbo popcorn chicken was 80% fried flour and 20% chicken meat. The tater tots were soggy and tasted like they were left in the freezer for way to long. I've made better tater tots from frozen supermarket packages than those! The burger was less than McDonald's quality. Overall, this place was overpriced and disgusting! I always have to stop here when I visit Gilroy because there's nothing like it in San Jose. Boyfriend and I had to give their new candy slushes a try! I got watermelon jolly rancher. He got cherry popping candy. I definitely enjoyed his more than mine. The jolly ranchers made mine too sweet eventually. When I come back, I'm getting popping candy! It's so cool when you can hear them popping on your tongue. A very enjoyable drink indeed. We also got a cheeseburger with bacon, which was pretty good, especially the bacon. OMG.... I nearly passed out at the office when Jenn W told me that Sonics was opening up in Gilroy... The corn dogs are just as good as I remember... the strawberry cream slushes make me drool. Prior to this location, I used to go the Tracy location to get my fix on the coney dogs and famous slushes. It was a drag to go through the crowded two lanes of 580. It is now a straight shot on 101...about 30 minutes or so. You will still hit some traffic when you exit the 152 East exit. Nonetheless, it is worth it. Personally, I love the food at Sonic despite the fact that many regard it as overrated. I usually order the foot long coney dog with onions and tater tots with cheese and chili with a Route 44 bubble gum slushy to wash it all down. Since the location is fairly new, the drive-in can get very crowded. There are cones to lead you to the drive through or parking stalls. With my stomach growling, I ran over a couple cones to park in one of the open stalls. Might I add, that there were only a few stalls available. There is a huge banner, "Training in Progress" which explains why my order was wrong the first time. It wasn't a big deal as they forgot my chili cheese tots. I used to LOVE LOVE LOVE their cherry limeades, but I recently discovered strawberry! It's a similar flavor, but full of fresh strawberry chunks! Their ice chunks are amazingly sweet, but I don't really recommend their food. I love going for their happy hour which is daily from 3-5pm. You can get a Route 44 (HUGE SIZE DRINK) for under $2 to last you all day! It's a great place to stop by on the way back from Socal or if you're shopping at the outlets. :) read more

Dear Sonic, I stopped by to grab a quick bite for my 2 hour drive ahead of me; I ws looking at the pre sign and I heard a voice, hello, hello, hello, it was very soft sounding, oh wait it's the car at the next station to order food and no one was talking to them, Hmmmmmmm.... I ordered breakfast from you with an extra order of Potato Tots. 1st off how can anyone mess up a breakfast sammy, I ordered it with Bacon TG which was the flavor it had, the rest was just flavorless stuff jammed between soggy bread, it was like someone designed a filling and bread with zero flavor... I mean wouldn't that cost more to do that then using the real stuff, it like powered milk or something. Wanted to like this place so bad since it was on prime real estate right off the 152 interchange on the way to the 5 (if you're taking a road trip to LA from the South Bay). Only real hot fast food without back tracking over the freeway. What's cool is that you just drive up and order from your car (nice touch since we had a car load of Xmas gifts and didn't want to leave it unattended) and some peeps on roller skates bring you your food. What we swallowed: ALL AMERICAN HOT DOG: Small and salty. Maybe I'm just spoiled comparing it to the Costco hotdog but dang, it wasn't even good. Even Hotdog on a Stick's hotdogs are better. POPCORN CHICKEN - The chicken was dry and the batter was hard. The Canadian liked it but then again he likes his chicken dry as jerky so there you go. BACON CHEDDAR TOASTER MELT- The picture shows a burger in between two thick, toasted Texas-toast style pieces of bread. What arrived was a little hamburger in a toasted hamburger bun. ONION RINGS - These were crispy but why did the batter taste like churro dough? Is that cinnamon in the batter? Was there a churro onion ring we accidentally ordered? It was interesting and gross at the same time. OREO BLAST- This this was SUPER thick. When they say "Order your shake for the road" they mean it. It was an hour into the drive before I could even get a bit through the straw. At least it gave my arms something to do since I had five more hours to kill until we reached LA. I watch a lot of t.v. when I'm home and trying to fall asleep. In comes the Sonic commercials with the late night pictures of Rte 44's and ice cream treats. Why does everyone eat in their car I wonder? Because Sonic is one of those car hop type of places. Kids on rollerblades skate and twirl their way to your car where you order, eat and dispose of your burgers, tator tots, and limeades. Because I'm not a huge D Grade type of person, we opted for just limeades. The cherry and cranberry limeades were super sugary yet superbly quaint. They give you a cherry, mints and quite the experience. I'm not used to my server skating to me but it's a gimmick and I'll live with it once a year when we make our way down to Gilroy. Word of caution about ordering though-there's literally no one to directly speak to. You speak to a box, push a red button and hope for the best. Good luck and god speed. Arrived at 10:20 pm waited 1 hour in drive through in hopes I was going to be served but they closed up shop at 11 pm with out notifying any of us who all waited in line that they would not serve us there was no sign in the back of the line just a small poor written sign as soon 10:50 hit to tell us even tho your trapped in the drive through we won't serve you at 11 we waited 1 hour just to ride a drive through when all we wanted was 3 measly slushies. Sonic, your frosty beverage commercials always have me craving the cherry limeaid but your locations are never anywhere near the area in which the commercials play. Is it just me that faces this phenomenon? I swear! Every time I see a commercial I am like UGH I want frosty cherry limeaid and I look up the locations to see Sacramento is the closest one or something like 50 miles away and it just makes me wonder why their marketing has purchased advertising time in San Jose? Nevertheless when I saw Sonic coming back from LA over 4th of July, in my head I took a mental note: Must come back here. So when we were on our way down to Pismo Beach for an ATVing weekend and the crew wanted a place to eat at that was fast for the way down, I suggested Sonic. Amazed with a resounding yes we all got there. OMFG they have people serving food on roller skates! And and and they are an actual drive in! Wow people still do that. Ambiance and feel get the 2 stars alone. The food I have to say was meh at best. Their frosty beverages are ok. I did get my cherry limeaid, but it's not as good as the Sunkist one. I had some burger on toast which I was excited about, but only tasted ok. Fun experience, bleh food. We were at this Sonic a few weeks ago! Worst service ever! Sat at the drive-thru order box for over 10 minutes....nothing!!! There was no one at the window and the folks in cars behind us were getting quite irritated! We ended up driving up to the window to order. When we got to the window it still took someone several minutes to notice us. When we told them that we had been waiting to place our order the guy at the window snapped "We are all taking orders"! Total attitude! There was no one at the walk up window!! This place has never had good service but now it is downright awful! Horrible experience. My online order took a long time to come out, and when it did I found out it was missing several items from my order. When I went back and pushed the red button to tell someone, they wouldn't even listen or give me a chance to explain the situation, they just kept saying 'drive through only' and cancelled my call. I was heading home from Gavilan and I was pretty hungry, so I thought I'd stop by and try this place for once. I chose one of the drive-in parking spots. After being confronted with a huge menu, I decided to keep it simple: cheeseburger w/ "the works" (ketchup, mustard, and mayo), half an order of fries, another half of tater tots, and a large soda. I didn't quite understand for a while that they wanted me to pay by credit card, so maybe they should post a sign or something to that effect instead of leaving the new customer hanging. Anyway, got the food and ate it. The burger was pretty decent, and the tater tots were OK, but the fries were bland. They didn't even offer ketchup and I wasn't going to walk in or ring them up just to ask for ketchup, so I was stuck w/ fried potato products and a burger. Also, I was not happy with the large amount of ice in the soda. I guess I'll come back for happy hour some time (1/2 off drinks and slushies from 2-4pm every day) or maybe try out one of the "Sonic Blast" shakes, but based on this experience, I'd say just go to McDonald's for convenience or In-N-Out for a great burger. read more

I'd always seen the commercials for the Sonic but the closest location is not really that close, so I finally got a chance to check this place out after a trip to the outlets. For some reason, even though it says "Drive In" in the name, it never occurred to me that it was an actual drive in. Plus I didn't know these even existed. I'd only seen them in the movies. And the employees here actually roller skate or roller blade to the cars! This part alone was fascinating to me. When I came, we didn't do the drive in thing, but we parked and walked up to the outdoor seating area. The fact that you order into the speaker outside, as if you were still in your car, was also really interesting. There's no indoor area for people to order or to wait or to eat (I can't imagine that these places get a lot of business in the winter in the midwest or east coast). And there's even a credit card slot thing so you can pay for your order right there. So everything up until the food part was just really fascinating - only because I guess I've never experienced a drive in. Things kind of fell apart after that. I ordered my food and waited at the table. My friend's food came pretty quickly but my food seemed to be taking a really long time even though I ordered like five minutes after her. I had ordered the #1 combo - a Sonic cheeseburger with a side of tater tots (love that tots are an option instead of french fries) with a drink. I added an ice cream cone for a $1 when speakerphone guy asked if I wanted to add one (sometimes it really works for them to ask!). For my drink, I ordered an iced tea an added mango flavor to it (they have all kinds of flavor add-ins on the menu for an additional 10 cents). After awhile, I went up to the little building and waited for someone to come outside. Someone came and I told him that I had been waiting for my food for a while. They went to check on it and it turned out that they thought I was in one of the drive-in car spots and took my food there. They finally brought me my order. The burger was okay, just a regular fast-food cheeseburger. It wasn't amazing or anything. But I do remember that it wasn't as greasy as burgers at other places, which is good. The tots were good...and also not very greasy, which is surprising since they are deep fried. Mmmm...deep fried. The ice cream cone was unremarkable. I've had better soft serve ice cream at McDonald's. And I couldn't really taste the mango in my iced tea. Also, I wasn't able to pay for my food when I ordered it at the credit card slot, so the server took my card and brought me back a receipt. It also turned out that they messed up my friend's order too - little things like putting onions when no onions were requested and not putting in the flavor shot in their drink. Happy hour is the best. It's 2-5 pm daily. Drinks are half off and then they even have snacks. I ended up getting a corn dog and a small order of tator tots for a buck each. I think they also offer onion rings and a couple other things as happy hour specials. Also a medium limemade is a little over $2 but with half off, it's practically also a dollar. I always get their limemades (my fav is strawberry with real strawberry bits in it) but the deal should also work on their milkshakes and slushes and regular sodas (I assume). Such a cool deal. It is definitely the best time to go. Usually I get out of my car an order too. The drive-thru is usually pretty long and I don't normally feel like sitting in my car to eat, especially if it's just me. *Just checked my receipt and they didn't charge me the HH price for the tator tots. It's only like a 20 cent difference so I'm not sweating too much. But I didn't get a chance to check it prior to paying because they tell you the total over the intercom, you pay the person when they bring out your food and then the receipt is presented. i used to have to drive so far just for some sonics! once i found out that they opened one up down here...i was was like HELL YES! =) This place is pretty neat because of the whole drive-in concept. I've tried basically everything on the menu, and I'd have to say everything is just OK, nothing out of the ordinary. So basically I've been trying to pull a Harold and Kumar and try this place out! So I called one of my friends to join me in an adventure from good o'le San Jose to Garlic Gilroy to enjoy some Sonics! We head out at around 7:30pm and were pretty lucky not to see any traffic. They do have a lot of drinks to choose from. After my friend ordered her food we sat down and within about 8 minutes our food came out. The guy came out in roller blades, he took my credit card to go swipe and bring back. They also have an option to pay at the menu board but I wasn't sure how to use it?Even considering I consider myself a tech person. Shortly after we paid we dove into our food. I went straight to the tater tots as I have not had them in a while! They were pretty good, you cant really mess up a tater tot now could ya? The burger was good too. There aren't many Sonics in California, so we get pretty excited when we do see one. In this case, we came across this Sonic on the way down from San Francisco. We were full having just eaten and we didn't any gas because we were at full tank, but we pulled over to get us some Sonic anyway! There's always room for Sonic, even in a full tummy. I've always appreciated the way Sonics are set up. You have a pull-up, drive thru or walk-in option. Orders are given through an intercom system and your food is delivered by carhops. Pretty neat. We lucked out when we came because all drinks and shakes were 1/2 off. We each ordered one. I ended up getting a blended orange Fanta and vanilla ice cream shake which i thought could have used more soda. The ice cream over-powered the soda and the entire shake tasted like ice cream. The cherry limeade was pretty awesome though. We also ordered some jalapeno poppers, which i didn't get to try because they were devoured by the family. The popcorn chicken was good. Well, it's Sonic's.. and it isn't an hour drive away! Before this place was built.. the closest one to me was all the way in Tracy.. and sure enough.. I had friends who make the long trip out there just to get some food. What helps make Sonic's great, isn't just their food, but their drinks. If you're there during their Happy Hour, then you have no reason to go thirsty. The location is great as well, though still a drive away for me.. it's at least closer. to set the scene it is friday the 13th after a LONG and arduous day of not getting our tattoos and a house fire nearby... we wanted to be treated! but NO we were greeted with a line that could've reached the core of the earth! to make matters worse we were losing brave soldiers in this line... RIP :(! we also saw a worker NOT on skates and with his CHONIES showing. I'm only giving one star to leave my review. Today I ordered a banana milkshake and they put coconut in it, I'm highly allergic to coconut. I called to ask why and Melanie said they always put coconut syrup, which I don't believe to be true. I always get this milkshake and have never got a reaction like today. She said I have 3 days to go back for a milkshake. That's not going to happen because I live 35-40 minutes away. When I told her that she said "I'm just following policy". I will never go to this sonic again due to the horrible service. read more
