    Fennel salad
    Shawn H.

Outstanding linguine with ragu and mustard greens, bread and butter, mushrooms with rice and egg, and potato with caviar. Would probably skip the fennel salad and cabbage/crab next time, and maybe the fries too. The popcorn ice cream was excellent, and we absolutely loved the olive oil cake.

I saw a post about the opening of Somssi and automatically went to make a reservation because I knew it was going to absolutely blow up in popularity... and with good reason! My husband and I came for dinner on a Saturday at 7pm. The restaurant is on MacDougal St, surrounded by many lively businesses, but this is the perfect escape: the space is dimly lit, thoughtfully decorated, small and cozy, with delicate lace curtains-- every detail feels intentional. The service was personable and friendly, in a casual, and not overbearing way. My husband got a glass of Hungarian white wine to begin which was refreshing, with a particularly dry and mildly sour profile which we liked! I wanted to try a mocktail so got the Buckwheat Cobbler which was very aesthetic with nice hints of peppercorn. It was a bit too sweet for my taste though which made me wish it had a salt rim for balance. For food we tried: - Fennel salad: thinly sliced fennel, with a creamy but tangy dressing, these almost crispy and very umami ?seeds/toasted legumes which added a very nice umami and earthy burst. The kumquats were sweet and a bit sour. It came with a lemon wedge for an acidic punch that tied it all together. Very nice flavor combo! I am not used to sweet early in a meal and I think my sweet mocktail with the salad was a bit too much. Good nonetheless! - Bluefin tuna: this one blew me away! The tuna tasted so fresh and was perfectly marinaded in umami flavors, mixed with earthy/bright crushed peas, and decadent goat cheese curd, and more lemon to cut in with acidity. Flavors and textures were insane. Would get this again! - Potato, potato, potato and caviar: as expected, pretty good! I'm not the biggest fan of potato in general so it takes a lot to blow me away. My husband did think this was the best bite of the meal. For me it was good but I would not get it again for the price and size. The textures were great and it reminded me of a nice croqueta with mashed potato filling, however the flavor of the caviar just was not there for me and got lost in the rest of the elements. - Ox tongue: was hesitant to order this but have no regrets! The flavor was amazing, like a very subtle smoky/BBQ glaze, which really was enhanced by the bright bell pepper in the romesco sauce and the aromatic spice of wasabi. We paired this with the side of fries which had a kimchi and cheese spice blend. Flavors were amazing! The fries were a bit too soft for my taste but because of this, did hold on to the flavoring well and sauces. The ox tongue was tender and fatty. Very good. Probably my favorite bite along with the tuna. - Cabbage: another hit! I'm a huge fan of cabbage and this roasted cabbage covered in egg and crab was to die for. The spices, aromatics, textures, and mild heat were just insane. Loved the caramelization of the cabbage leaves, very excellent with the richness of the egg and flavor of the tender crabmeat. - Popcorn ice cream: buttery, creamy, with crunchy, puffy, caramelized elements from the Jolly Pong brittle. This was not too sweet and perfectly reminiscent of popcorn. Very good! Overall, the dishes were well executed and inventive! The quality of the ingredients was superb. Loved the European bistro-like ambiance with a quirky twist from the unique decoration. Very good service. Prime location for a date with plenty to do around the area. Definitely try them if you have a chance!

Grilled prawns were flavorful but messy to peel.

Cute spot with interesting selections on the menu. The server recommended 4 to 6 plates to share. We ordered 4 and were pretty full at the end. The winner was the potato with caviar. Definitely recommend to visit!

We walked in without reservation but Patrina was able to accommodate us and personally escort us to the table to be sure we are seated comfortably. Our wait staff Miles was very friendly and kind, attention to details. We really enjoyed the wines he recommended and it paired beautifully with the seafood we ordered. The oyster and uni cold starter was a wonderful kickoff, and they surprised us with a compliment starter which was really refreshing! What started as a quick break turned into one of our favorite moments of the afternoon. We ended up chatting with the bartender for quite a while, swapping recommendations for speakeasies and cocktail bars around the city. It's always refreshing to meet someone who's genuinely passionate about their craft and happy to share local favorites. The cocktails were excellent, and the conversation made the experience even better. This wasn't actually our first visit--we celebrated my birthday here about three years ago, and I still remember how impressed we were with both the food and its presentation. It was nice to return and be reminded why we enjoyed it so much. We also learned that 53 has opened a speakeasy downstairs that's open on select weeknights and features live jazz. Needless to say, that's already on our list for our next trip to the city. Whether you're stopping in for a full dinner or just a well-made cocktail and a break from the Midtown bustle, 53 is well worth a visit.

I stopped in solo on a Thursday night and was easily able to get a table without a reservation. The interior is upscale and stylish, with plenty of staff on the floor. It also seemed to be a popular spot for business dinners, with quite a few people dining in suits. There was a bit of a service hiccup at the beginning. I sat for over 10 minutes before anyone even came by to pour water, apparently because of some miscommunication between the host and waitstaff. Once that was sorted out, though, the service was friendly for the rest of the meal. I ordered the bánh khọt as an appetizer and the bò lúc lắc (shaking beef) as my main. Twin Tails bills itself as Thai-Vietnamese, but based on what I tried, the food seems to lean much more Thai. I love Vietnamese food, and I don't care who is cooking it as long as it tastes good. My issue here was that the flavors and preparation didn't really honor the Vietnamese dishes whose names they use. These felt more like loose interpretations of bánh khọt and bò lúc lắc than elevated versions of the originals. They weren't bad, but they also weren't particularly satisfying, especially at these prices. The cocktail was a little too sweet and strong for my taste. The red curry soufflé that accompanied the bánh khọt was also sweeter and mushier than I would have preferred. And somehow the $9 side of rice was overcooked and mushy inside the bowl. That one is especially hard to excuse. Rice cookers exist! Overall, Twin Tails feels like a place where the ambience, presentation, and scene are a big part of what you're paying for. It's certainly attractive and makes sense for a business dinner or a night out where atmosphere matters. But if I were choosing based primarily on the food, especially Vietnamese food, there are many other places in NYC I'd seek out first. Not bad, just not compelling enough for me to return at this price point.

They even played throwback jams and I had liked how this one busser was vibing to the music as he was waiting to assist at a table. It was the food I had problems with. For appetizer I had order the Vegetable Egg roll and it didn't say on the menu that the dip was spicy nor did the waiter, my mouth was burning all through dessert, I had to drink so much water. That sauce tasted like hot sauce and I hate hot sauce!!! The sauce went through my nose and through my mouth, this sauce really messed up my pallet. I had order for the entree Thai Sweet and Spicy Shrimp, I couldn't tell if it was really that spicy because I still had the burning sensation in my mouth from the appetizer still!!! For dessert I had order the banana pudding crumble and it looked like a crumble of mess, it tasted good when you got to the bottom to the pudding. The presentation of this dessert was a hot mess, it looked like a rushed job the chef threw in the two cut banana's and the vanilla wafer cookies and chopped up the cookie and just dumped it in the dish. I did like the dish the dessert came in. My biggest complaint is that sauce never be served and the disappointing banana pudding. I mean how do you mess up banana pudding. I was taken to the second floor and was really shocked it had a top floor, just like I was stunned to learn that I had to go down the stairs to restroom. The restroom was clean. I thought it was funny how the men's room was called Yang and the woman's was called Yin. My biggest problem with the restroom was they have toilet seat covers over the toilet, but it was an empty box and I had used two different stalls before and after my meal. And I said how there was a bathroom attendant in there. For a well known restaurant, I had excepted a better experience from Tao's.
