They're a sister restaurant to a Michelin-star omakase, so fish quality is amazing. Staff is super nice, made great recommendations! It's a super small spot, would recommend for 2-3 people or solo date. Personal standouts include Ceviche, Chef Sampler Nigiri (5 pieces), Apples, Fish Slider... basically everything we had. The food - absolutely incredible. The dishes have bold and unique flavors that are definitely worth checking out. However, everything is rather pricey for the portions you get. The service - we had a weird experience with the manager and servers and made us feel very unwelcomed...I won't go into specifics but I dine at many restaurants and have never been made to feel this way before :( for that reason, it's going to be tough to come back. The ambience - it's rather small and quaint. It feels cozy and I love that you can see the chefs making your order and the entire kitchen working. However, if there are people waiting to dine, it can feel packed as people kind of hang out and stand behind you while you are eating. Came into their HH which I highly recommend. They have a $25 nigiri set that is worth it imo during HH- don't get me wrong it's great nigiri but I just love their dishes and think they are worth the splurge. Rosella has been on my list for years and I finally made it on a recent Friday. My boyfriend and I walked in when they opened and were seated at the main bar. They have great happy hour specials until 6:30 PM, so we took advantage and ordered: + Spicy avocado hand roll (HH) + Ceviche (HH) + Five-piece nigiri set (HH) + fish sausage slider (HH) + Coconut milk sorbet + Miso carrot cake The highlights were the ceviche, fish sauce slider and desserts (the sushi was a little underwhelming). Amazing experience at Rosella a couple of weeks ago. We were seated at the bar and served by the bartender, who was incredibly nice. The menu is small and generally consists of shareable small plates/sushi. I tried the following: Food: -Ceviche classic (salmon, persimmon, citrus, coconut milk): super tangy/citrusy dish overall (and it maybe leant a bit heavily on these flavors), but the persimmon lent a sweetness as well. This had something crunchy in it, too-- maybe corn nuts? The salmon tasted extremely fresh. -Bagels-on-Hudson (smoked trout, dill cream cheese, tamago, cucumber): I thought this sounded good but not overly exciting, but - surprise! - it was my favorite dish of the night. This roll was so delicious. The dill cream cheese, cucumber, and smoked fish really did remind me of my typical bagel order, but in sushi form. The soy sauce with mirin was also standout. -Spicy tuna (avocado, jalapeno, herbs, spicy mayo): Maybe not as amazing as the aforementioned roll, but still excellent and very fresh and vegetable-forward. The spicy sauce was really good. -Laksa ramen (spicy shrimp & chicken broth, shredded chicken): I was low-key hoping for more of an Asam laksa. While this was not that kind, it was still very tasty, with springy noodles, a seafood broth, nice spiciness, huge and delicious mushrooms, a boiled egg, and lots of mint. My only gripe was that I found it a bit too salty. -Miso carrot cake (mandarin marmalade, cream cheese frosting): SO gorgeously plated and decadent. The cake was tender and the frosting was almost impossibly light and creamy. -coconut milk sorbet: great flavor with a delicious basil oil, but I also found this to be extremely salty to the point that it was overpowering the rest of the dish. I truly don't know that I can express how enjoyable a meal this was in terms of experience. The staff is incredible and felt like we were the best of friends. They're so attentive to a degree that I'm surprised they don't have the star over their sister restaurant (not that I've been). And the layout of the restaurant works so well because you're in constant contact with someone who seems like they want to chat with you in such an intimately personable way. The food itself was astounding, even more-so than I had anticipated. It's a bit pricey but for the experience was worth it. The bagels-on-Hudson and shrimp nigiri were a must for me. We had a fantastic dinner, trying half the menu, as well as a wine and a couple sake's - everything as top notch. This is *not* an ultra-traditional high-end sushi restaurant - this place celebrates new and modern flavors paired with classic sushi flavors. The vibe is really cool, not stodgy at all but elevated. The staff is super friendly and talented. The Crudo Pesto was probably our favorite, just a perfect pairing of flavors. The ceviche was also delicious. The spicy avocado / tuna rolls were good but probably stood out less than the other dishes. I got a 5-piece Nigori spread that was absolutely fantastic, every bite a pleasure in its own way. Finally, the carrot cake for desert was a wonderful way to end the meal. We were able to nab a 5:30pm Saturday reservation the morning-of on a holiday weekend, and we're very happy we did! Of course it was an early dinner, but they do have great happy hour specials (both food and drink), so I'd highly recommend checking that out if you'd like to explore the restaurant's menu on a bit easier budget. read more

Rosella isn't bad. It's just vastly, vastly overpriced for semi-creative Japanese fusion. Dozens of restaurants in the city can do the same thing, and many don't charge as much as Rosella does. This is sushi/Japanese designed for rich white people who can afford to travel to Japan but still can't tell you what omakase means, and the prices--and clientele--reflect that. Why else would Rosella charge $21 for a Spicy Tuna Roll? Six average-sized pieces containing nothing particularly unique besides avocado, jalapeno and spicy mayo. Oh, I forgot, they added an herb or something in there. I didn't realize dill now cost $21. We let our server order for us, and he got us almost everything on the not-very-big menu, so I can say with confidence that we tried the best that Rosella had to offer. If you want sushi--whether traditional or fusion--this is NOT the place to go, as not only are the rolls overpriced, but also there are only three options in their "Little Roll" (re: teeny-tiny 6 pieces) category, and three options in their "Big Roll" (re: average-sized 6 pieces--this ain't futomaki), and none of them are that special. You're better off trying the cold and hot dishes. I quite enjoyed the creative Ceviche, which came with scallops and kiwi, while the Crudo with monkfish liver was great. Just be prepared to fork over $23+ each for portion sizes that would be classified as snacks at other restaurants. Also, why the hell is Laksa on a Japanese fusion menu? Rosella shines best in its desserts. The Miso Carrot Cake was moist, fragrant and beautiful to behold, while the creamy Coconut Sorbet came mixed with ginger and lemongrass with a lovely basil drizzle. Get these, whatever else you do. Bottom line: Rosella will undoubtedly appeal to hype-following foodies who blindly spend on omakases while having no actual idea what omakase means. This place was a lot of fun. The food was really good. The ceviche, crudo pesto, and xo grits were fantastic. Really fun to share but the portion sizes were a bit small. The rolls were very good, specifically the amberjack and ramps(which we ate so fast that we forgot to take a photo of). The soy sauce is fantastic here as well. The service here was very good. The waiters were very nice and gave good suggestions about ordering. The place itself has a nice cozy vibe and the outside area was also very pleasant. This place is truly phenomenal. I was initially skeptical as I'd thought of it like an omakase type of place (with rolls and laksa on the menu??), which is not the right way. This place as a fusion Asian restaurant is very very good, and the vibes are super fun and casual which makes it very enjoyable. What I loved: - spicy avocado rolls - laksa - as someone who spent 6+ years in Singapore, I was nervous to try this as my bar is high. It's amazing and the best rendition of this dish I've had yet in the city. It's not 'traditional' laksa but the soup is flavorful and the sea bass is seared to perfection - fish sausage slider - sounds strange, extremely delicious - uni toast - ceviche I liked the nigiri fine but you don't come here for those. I hate to be a naysayer, but I was underwhelmed by Rosella. Everything seemed to feature too much avocado (which I typically like) and the same flavor profile. The texture of the sushi rice was also off for me (Too cold? Too heavily packed? Not exactly sure). Pretty spectacular sushi with a bit of a twist. Rosella comes from alumnus of Uchiko, a famed sushi restaurant from Austin (and one of my favorite restaurants ever), so I had to check it out. I'm eating uni nigiri, later uni on toast which was somehow even better, drinking the best grüner veltliner I've had outside of Germany, and How Soon is Now? by The Smiths comes on. So now I'm bopping my head, the one dude next to Augustus making rolls is singing along, the dimes next to me from Day-twah of all places who almost make me want to forget I'm that gay are into it in ways that 20 something dimes try so hard not to show. But you almost can't help it. This place is an entire vibe. It cracks even the most Glossier encrusted shells. And I just know you can't have places like this in LA where I live, because the inherent Los Angelesness would ruin it faster than you could take the 101 to Gower and take the secret right off the off-ramp to get up into the Canyon. It could not survive in our ecosystem with this vibe and this quality for even five minutes. So even though New York in August is a humid hellscape, this restaurant is so good, is such an almost unimaginable vibe, it actually makes me happy to be here. In August. With this humidity. Fun dining experience. The service was excellent, the recommended sake pairings were perfect. Each course better than the last.

Short review: Might be a sushi spot but their noodles are outstanding. Particularly good XO Mazeman but the Laksa was also excellent. For sushi, the Avocoho and chirashi are both good albeit pricey choices. Would also comment that the rolls were a bit loose especially for the price. I was here with two others earlier this evening to this unique Japanese spot. They are a sushi specialist with some outstanding noodles in particular and the fish here unlike most places is local so the prices are to an extent reduced compared to other fancy spots. The bar seating is split between a sushi bar and alcohol and there are perhaps 25-30 seats here and reservations are a necessity. We split a bunch of dishes and left reasonably full having spent $80 each but all of us are gluttons so you could probably get away with less especially alone. To drink I had the Kato Sake Works Junmai Nigori from a Brooklyn based sakegura/sake brewery which was $20 a glass for a generous pour. The friendly bartender gave a sample of another sake which was $25 and that was outstanding as well. Large Rolls: The Bagels-On-Hudson consisting of Smoked Steelhead, Dill Cream Cheese, Tamago, and Cucumber was $18. The steelhead trout was of high quality and so was the tamago/egg. The cream cheese had some dill flavor but I found it a bit strong. Perhaps a bit more tamago would be. This was alright. The Avocoho with Coho Salmon, Avocado, Fresno Chili, and Shiso was better at $16. The fresno chilies added a wonderful sourness which balanced out the avocado and fresh fish. Would recommend. Cold Dishes: The Crudo Blanco consisted of Bay Scallops, Fennel, Turnips, and Trout Roe $25. This was tasty though I think a bit more trout roe would be nice. The turnips added some food texture. This was fine also. The Ceviche with Coho Salmon, Coconut Milk, Persimmon, and Corn Nuts for $20 was even better. The coconut milk base was excellent and the persimmon was a tasty novelty. This was essentially a Peruvian style ceviche but elevated and I would recommend it. The Chirashi with Sushi Rice, Different Exotic Fishes, Pickles, Tamago, and Avocado for $39 was pricey but outstanding. The fish consisted of more coho salmon, tuna, blue fin, and something else. The tamago in there was very tasty and the fish was fresh as per every other dish. Very tasty though there is a lot more rice than fish. Noodles (Best Part:) The XO Mazeman (or really Mazemen) is the best dish here. This dish consisting of Spicy Preserved Shellfish Sauce, Country Ham, and Parmesan for $19 or in our case $34 with a uni supplement had a wonderful spice and umami flavor. I believe the main flavors of their outstanding XO sauce come from dried scallops/conpoy and there were some big pieces. Highly worth it with or without the uni. The Laksa with Spicy Shrimp & Chicken Broth, Rice Noodles, and Smoked Eel for $26 was also tasty. As with another table, they split this dish into different bowls which was a nice touch. I'm unsure of the size of the original bowl but the flavors were nice. There was a large piece of maitake mushroom on top and I believe the fish in there was mackerel and not eel and it worked well. I prefer egg noodles like the ones used in the mazeman but the rice noodles were good also. The only dessert we tried was the Miso Carrot Cake with Mandarin Marmalade, and Cream Cheese Frosting for $13. The carrot cake had a nice texture and the marmalade was very tasty. The frosting done backwards as a bottom layer had some pleasant tartness. The only issue is that they are listing it as with miso and I couldn't taste it. Perfectly solid dessert to end the meal. The food here was tasty and the people were nice. A couple mssteps here and there but the noodles in particular were excellent. They appear to be expanding and I hope there's noodles at their new location also. Wouldn't be surprised if they have a star by next year. read more

The food: It is very good, sure. Is it incredible? No. I'd expect so much more given the price point, which is exceptionally high. There are many sushi places in the downtown area which are both authentic and innovative (and in plenty of cases, superior to Rosella) at lower price points. The service: My complaint about the price would be easier to stomach if the service and the ambiance were better. I found one of the hosts I dealt with to be very rude. Mentality of a bouncer rather than someone who wants to help you get a table. The second one I dealt with was friendly, however. All in all, I felt I was being shuffled through the whole overpriced experience. Ambiance: The place is crammed, not in a good way. I found myself stuck beside some kind of AC unit. Nothing noteworthy about the ambiance. The price tag is why i'm far less forgiving in my review here. This place is great and definitely worth the try for its sustainability! The server gave us fantastic recommendations, including the shrimp nigiri which was our highlight of the night. It was so soft, texturally almost like scallop, with super interesting flavours. The rolls and other salmon sashimi we had were also good, and it was great attention to detail that they give different types of soy sauce for each. That being said, we both felt that the rice was a bit too vinegar forward for our tastes. In the chirashi bowl in particular, we felt that it detracted from the beautiful flavours of the fish (the flavours we tasted when we ordered the straight sashimi were much more pronounced than in the chirashi bowl). Overall, this place unfortunately won't join the ranks of my regular rotation, but I'd definitely recommend stopping by and trying it out. It's a super solid spot, and if you don't mind the vinegar as we did, it will probably be right up your alley. read more

Rosella is probably one of my top sushi restaurants in the city at the moment. A plus is that it's also a sustainable restaurant. This was a wonderful dining experience, from the food, to the drink, to the service. We both had the omakase at the counter, which I highly recommend for the best experience. The omakase is probably the best way to try almost a bit of everything off their menu. It was all beautifully presented as well. I especially enjoyed the fish sausage slider, laksa, mazemen, ceviche, and all our nigiri. As for service, our chef was great and just super friendly. Our sommelier/server was also super helpful when it came to wine recommendations. She even replaced my first wine as she could tell I wasn't particularly keen on it. She was happy to recommend other wines based on my desired tastes. I had a super enjoyable dinner and experience at Rosella. The space and vibe is also fun, great for date night. My new "House of Small Wonder" spot-- aka I'll make it a priority to enjoy myself here anytime I'm back in the city visiting buddies or family. one of my most favorite dinners in the city that i've ever had over the last ten years. i found it last minute and got there 15 min before opening to snag a walk-in bar seat with my friend and was seated right away, just in time for happy hour which was also so reasonably priced especially for the things you could get. a whole 5 piece nigiri set for $25 and it was the best nigiri i've ever had. spiced apples.. speechless. audrey the waitress behind the bar was sooo precious and kind and adorable. the girly who brought out our food was also so sweet. the onlyyyy issue we had was immediately upon walking in - the hostess was extremely rude, it was so noticeable that me and my friend both shot glances to each other. i was worried the restaurant was going to be a flop from that initial experience alone, but im glad we stayed and got to have one of my favorite dinners ever. read more

Incredibly intimate, and wonderfully understated, Rosella holds a lovely charm and aesthetic in a tucked away part of an otherwise bustling neighborhood. The staff are all quite friendly and knowledgeable on every portion of their menu--excited to make recommendations and chat with diners, while allowing for a wonderful dining experience. The place is very popular and seating is limited, so I recommend getting a reservation--the sushi bar is fine for one or two but I recommend the wine bar for larger parties. Now to the food--every bite is carefully prepared with intelligence and expertise. My favorites were the Ceviche, Coconut Sorbet, and the pickled mussels. The ceviche had an amazing cream sauce, crispy homemade corn nuts, fresh raw fish, and mint leaves for a textural delight of a snack that is perfectly portioned to be enjoyed for up to 3 people. The pickled mussels also carried a brilliance in flavor profile for a rich and fatty mouthfeel broken up with a pickled brightened flavor for a very balanced bite. The Coconut Milk Sorbet was phenomenal as a mix of sweet and savory with the creamy sweetness of the coconut sorbet and the salty savory taste of the basil oil topping. These were the three things I think I will order every time I come back--and I will definitely be coming back again. I got a late reservation and dinner was worth the wait! Food and service was superb despite the bar seating. I appreciate that the bar was not so packed and you didn't feel rushed so we had a great dining experience. We had a few tasting of wines including an orange wine. The guy at the bar knew his wines and sake; he made a good recommendation based on our preferences with plenty of tastings. I tasted the ceviche and chirashi which I heard was good as there was not much sharing ;) For me, I enjoyed ordering a sampling of nigiris while enjoying a bottle of sake. My favorites were the fatty tuna, scallops, smoked steelhead trout, and surprisingly Spanish mackerel. Sushi with sustainable seafood, all of it domestic and much of it from local waters, sounds cool at first, but then you might pause and think to yourself, "Hmm, maybe there's a good reason you never see Japanese joints offering raw striped bass from the Hudson River?" It's a legitimate question when a menu is charging $7-$10 per piece of nigiri. Those kinds of prices have been normalized by NYC's gilded glut of omakase temples, but they still add up to a special occasion meal for commoners like yours truly. And so, when I sit down at Rosella, I'm feeling excited about the idea of Empire State sashimi, but also a tiny bit skeptical it'll be worth the hundreds of dollars my party is about to spend. Happily, it turns out that Rosella's raison d'etre is not just unusual but also unusually delicious. The aforementioned bass is a winner, as are all of the other fishes (and shellfishes) that have found their way from Massachusetts, Maine, Louisiana and California to a small space in the East Village. Nigiri, rolls and small plates are all seasoned thoughtfully and creatively but not excessively. Funky fermented condiments, such as housemade white kimchi, make frequent appearances throughout the meal without overwhelming their sea creature companions. The abundant umami is often complemented and accentuated by light and bright elements, such as yuzu, avocado and fresh herbs. Rosella's vibe is sophisticated and professional but also unpretentious, and so with all the other plusses, I'll be making future reservations -- and doing so without the slightest hesitation. read more
