She didn't know the answer so she proceeded to ask someone else which I believe was the owner and to top it off he was condescending and rude as well. Will not be returning. read more

I went to pick up my wine club selections this Monday. It was Labor Day and a party was ensuing with a live band, food and wine. It was packed. No one wore a mask but it was outside so I can live with it. In side the tasting room was a different story. No employee wore masks. No one in the room wore masks. When I asked the employee who was helping me she stared and said "oh I'm vaccinated ". I'm vaccinated, too. But I told her in Santa Clara County a mask was required inside. She shrugged and ignored me. I asked another gentleman if he could cancel my membership. He said he couldn't and he, too, ignored my request to wear a mask. I was very disappointed my favorite winery has so little regard for the safety of their clients. I have been a member there for years-apparently loyal customers are dirt to them. I received an email this morning from the owner saying my membership was permanently canceled. Here's the response-my first reply is below his... Though Yelp has what is normally way too many 1 & 2 star reviews for this place within the past couple of years, it did not stop me from visiting. Beautiful grounds - front, back, sides. Indoors very pleasant. So where's the stuffy snobby attitudes? We looked so hard and when we couldn't find any I simply asked "Where are the workers with attitude? Were they fired and replaced by the two of you ? (Dan & Staci) ". Staci replied with "I've been here for 6 years ...". Solis is, in our opinion, the best Santa Clara County winery to date. Great wine, outstanding grounds, superb service, and extremely pleasant ambiance both indoors as well as out on the multi level patio. What tops the competition is the incentive to join the wine club. The discounts off of the regular and reasonably priced bottle is approximately 40% off for members. To start, Solis is a beautiful winery and we have had nothing but welcoming interaction with staff up until today's visit. My friend and I had our two daughters (6 year olds) out on the lovely newly expanded grass area. Our daughter's were playing quietly on the grass. When my friend went in to buy a bottle of wine she was told we had to sit in the designated kids area. At the time there were maybe 4 other guests on the property. I understand changes happen and we'll adapt but beware, if you are taking kids to Solis you'll probably be told you'll have to sit in the designated kids area. read more

October is here and the holiday season has already begun. Seriously! All the malls and stores are displaying the holiday gear. And you know what that means....time for gifts! So let me say this.... If you're one of those people that give out cheap wines as presents, shame on you! You know who you are! Especially those that shop at Costco for wines! LOL! Don't even bother asking the people that work at Costco if "this" or "that" wine is any good. Chances are they don't know crap about wines. This season, do a little something special and put some effort in wine tasting. I'm recommending a dessert wine this holiday season. Solis's 2008 Muscat Canelli. From the website: "2008 Muscat Canelli Santa Clara Valley Gold Medal, San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition Clear, pale gold color. Sensual aromas of pear and honeydew melon. Solis was our seconds top in our self-guided wine trek a lazy, relaxed Monday afternoon. We were attended to by the tasting room manager himself, and it seemed to take him a while to warm up to us. Maybe it was my wine buddy who might have offended him a bit by telling him what we do at our winery (industry ego, sorry!)...but in the end he was every bit warm, welcoming, and easy to talk to. Their wines all have Italian names, which is reflective of their ownership culture :) I wasn't a fan of their wines, to be honest. But I loved their location and HUGE open window view. I didn't enjoy their whites (a bit body-less to me), and found their Rose to be too sweet. But that's just because of my palette. If you're into sweet Rose's, this is the place for you. Their reds had more substance and flavors going on, so that was much more my kind of thing. We were allowed to eat our own snacks, but we couldn't enjoy them at the tasting bar. We were told to eat them outside or by the standing bars a few steps away from the bar. It wasn't a big deal, we totally got it! I just wasn't too fond of their wines and initial prickly service, but their space is quaint and that window view is unparalleled. read more

I have been a wine club member for over 15 years and I have never received such a poor level of service. So I am now canceling my membership! This afternoon, I called at 5:01 to see if I could come in and get my wine club shipments and was told no (even though I was only 5 minutes away and there were still people in the tasting room.)  As I explained to Megan on the phone, I live in Santa Clara and it is difficult for me to get down to Gilroy. I will not be making another to this winery. $5 for tasting of 5 wines. We came here on Labor Day and it was pretty busy, but we still got out tastings right away and staff was attentive. I liked the whites of course such as Fiano and Vino Roseo di Sangiovese. Reds are too dry for me. A lot of picnic areas out there and sometimes they got musicans playing. Recently stopped by Solis with a few friends. We were pleasantly surprised by the beautiful improvements in the back and the nice stage for live music. The day we stopped in, there was live music and Cousin's Main Lobster food truck. We enjoyed a couple bottles of wine while listening to music in a beautiful setting. Staff was very friendly. We just made it 10 minutes before this place was going to close. Luckily the girl was kind enough to take my drunk ass in. She was very nice and attentive and fun to talk to. We ended up getting the second wine on the list (the sweetest delicious wine). The descriptions under the wines were very good...whoever wrote these is a genius because after reading the descriptions and the ideal pairings we got hungry for some of the food mentioned. My boss gave me some wine and I love the Cara Mia Reserve 2014 and the Seducente Reserve 2013, both where instrumental in keeping me sane during Covid! While I am familiar with Pinot Noir's, these two were a pleasant surprise. Not heavy and easy to drink, maybe too easy! They are strong, we really liked them and now that things are opening up, we plan to visit the winery it's self. They have tours we want to check out and see if we can find more of same wine. On a hot Saturday afternoon after spending a few hours at Gilroy Gardens, my friend & I left the kids & hubbys hanging out in the air-conditioned car and ran in for a quick tasting. The views from the tasting bar look out over the deck, a small but lush lawn and the grapevines. They had a tent & grill set up on the lawn and were selling BBQ. I really enjoyed the Fiano (white wine) and bought a bottle of ruby port. They will subtract your paid tasting fee from a single bottle purchase. read more

Gabrielle Solis: [to Carlos] Do you know how bored I was today? I came this close to actually cleaning the house. Carlos: Why don't we just tell her the truth? Gabrielle: What? That Mommy rides Daddy like a mechanical bull for jewelry. Gabrielle Solis was always my favorite character on Desperate Housewives...a show that I watched for maybe 2 complete episodes ;) Some things though last a bit longer than my TV show habits though, like Solis Winery for instance. Originally part of an 8,000 acre Spanish Land Grant called Rancho de Solis, grapes have been grown here since the 1920's (It was formally called Bertero Winery). Originally planted to Zinfandel and Carignane, the vineyard now grows Chardonnay, Merlot (No, not F#%ing Merlot!), Muscat, Zinfandel, Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. In 1980 the vineyard was sold to the Vanni family, whose members run the operation today. This was the first stop on our winery tour of the Santa Clara Valley. This winery is located on the Hecker Pass surrounded by beautiful vineyards, nurseries and gorgeous hillsides. This time of the year both the vineyards and trees were changing colors. Eat your heart out New England! This is a rustic, friendly tasting room with glass windows in the back to take in the views and sells gourmet food items as well. Unlike that Pretentious Winery That Shall Not Be Named (like Gail Collins and Seamus I will be milking this for awhile) who we unfortunately took a LaChance on (Get it?), this place really was about the service. I was lucky to have a cool and special friend in town on business to taste with and being a white wine drinker, it was easy to split tastings throughout our wine journey. Here, I tasted the reds (swirling, spitting and dumping kids...please do not be like the drunken yokels we occasionally run across at wineries) while my Special Taster drank the one white available. And without asking they gave her multiple pours! Very nice of them. It was a lovely chardonnay too. Balanced, crisp, not overoaked...it was one of the bottles I purchased along with another white made with the Fiano grape which I had tasted at Maurizio's Restaurant in Morgan Hill but was not offered to taste in the winery. The reds were less successful...a Bordeaux Blend, Super Tuscan blend, Zinfandel, Cabernet...these were not balanced wines, too fruit forward and frankly not distinguishable from one another. I definitely find the reds in this area overall to be less impressive than the whites. Regardless, this was a successful start to our day...a couple of nice whites, nice people, with nice views...it was starting out as a very nice day :) Recommended stop especially for the whites! read more

Solis on a Saturday. I was sure it was going to be very busy. Surprisingly, it was quiet and we received a lot of individual attention during our tasting. Although I prefer red wines, their Chardonnay is quite good. Some of my other favorites included the 2012 Cab, and Zinfandel. Enjoyed the 2015 Vino Roseo di Sangiovese so much, we bought a bottle to share outside. They have a few tables in the shade overlooking the vineyards. It's intimate, and quiet. Very relaxing way to spend the afternoon. I'm still not sure if this is typical for a Saturday. There was complimentary grilled food for wine club members. Nice touch. A tip I wish I'd know about before coming: You can print out a 50% off coupon from their website for your first purchase. That's cool. read more

California is known for amazing wine. There are hundreds of great winery's to taste this delicious beverage. And with such an array of choices, I would SKIP this one! Every wine I tasted had a bitter taint of Bill. Bill was our tasting server who made a group of 10+ Yelpers pretty unhappy. Some more than others. He did not want to answer our questions, if he did it wasn't happily. He did not want to let people taste wines they were seriously interested in buying. He actively ignored most of us. Maybe he just had a lack of ability to multi-task and maintain a good level of customer service. But never the less we felt that he was unnecessarily rude and had quite and attitude about our reactions to his demeanor. He seemed more than reluctant to deal with us at all. He did not even seem to like his job. Were their wines pretty good? Yes. Would I have bought some? Yes. And I know there were people who routinely buy cases in our group as well. Did I buy anything? No. And I know several other people who felt the same way. Or bought things and felt sort of bitter about the experience. There are plenty of other winery's to grace your presence with. I'm rarely this unhappy based mostly on customer service, but this is an exception. read more

I just finished reading the one star comments that were recently posted and I am amazed that Solis had a 1 one-star rating. Solis, in my opinion, has the best tasting wine in the Gilroy/Morgan Hill area and I consider myself an avid wine taster. The tasting room is nice but the patio is spectacular. The wines are fabulous and I have been a wine club member here for probably the last 6 years. The port at Solis is to die for and I often stop by just to pick up a cold bottle of Vino Roseo for a warm summer night. I have many bottles of Sangiovese and normally stock up when it's on sale. I am also a wine club member at a few Napa and El Dorado county wineries and Solis wine is just as good if not better than wines that any of these wineries produce. I have never tasted a 'bad' bottle of wine from Solis. There are wines I enjoy more than others but I am comfortable knowing that any glass of Solis wine I drink is going to be good. I have never had anything but a fabulous time at this winery. A few weeks ago a group of us took a picnic and played dominoes on the patio and bought a few bottles of wine, wonderful time! It's also a dog friendly winery so my Great Dane sat on the patio and enjoyed with us. The events that Solis has are wonderful! Sausage and Syrah, Paella, Merlot Madness....are all a success. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable about all of the wines. This winery is almost always busy and I can see how you may not get as much personal attention as you would a less popular winery. But a busy winery is a good thing, right? What amazes me more is that some yelpers actually complained about Bill. Bill is one of the reasons my friends and family are wine club members and why we visit the winery so often. Bill has a great personality and is fun to talk to. He knows plenty about the wine and has always been able to answer any of my questions. For someone to say that he was not knowledgeable or rude is outrageous. Yelp is a powerful tool, it quite possibly can make or break a business. It's unfortunate when people abuse the powers of this wonderful website and write things that are just untrue or stretch the truth to make their story seem more outrageous. For those of you reading all of the Yelp reviews, please don't let some of the low ratings influence your decision to visit this beautiful winery, you won't regret the trip! read more

Wow! I put together a small wine tasting tour for some friends and family (ok, just 3 wineries were on the list), and Solis was our second stop. It was all of our first time here, and we were blown away by the level of customer service we experienced. It was a small/quaint tasting room--when we walked in, it felt cozy and lively--as if you were entering a friend's home. Compared to our first stop, this place definitely felt more comfortable. Our pourer was extremely friendly and informative. He introduced each wine with enthusiasm and even pointed out which grapes in the fields produced each wine. It definitely didn't seem like he was reciting facts--his delivery was very conversational--which is a quality I think is grossly underrated. I hate it when people just spit out memorized facts to you in a rote form. It's very off-putting. The wines we tried were excellent. The tasting menu was heavy on the reds, which is fine for me because I love the reds. My friends and I enjoyed the wine so much that we took advantage of the special they're having right now (6 bottles for $77), and purchased the case to share. If you're looking for an unpretentious, friendly wine-tasting experience, with delicious, locally-produced wine, you should definitely check out Solis. read more

Solis is a smallish place, with a good variety of locally produced wines, some better than others obviously, and an attractive outdoor patio / picnic area. We've been here multiple times and it's one of our favorite local wineries. Tasting fees are reasonable and are refunded with any purchase (when we were last there I believe it was $5). Be aware that under-21s are not allowed in the tasting room / gift area at all, and have to stay outside in the patio / lawn area. Sometimes they hold events with live music and food. BTW I have seen all the negative reviews posted recently and I feel I have to write something of a rebuttal. This is *not* the place to go if you are a wine snob or are expecting a dissertation on the subtle differences between flavors based on the microclimates of the area. Come on! Really, isn't the main issue whether you like the wines or not? Maybe the servers can be less knowledgeable than one would hope, but it's a very laid-back, down-to-earth experience. We had a great experience the first time we came...the 2nd time around they were soooo rude. We had the biggest group come in that Saturday and bought tastings and bottles of wine and they told each one of our friends that we didnt have permission to be there, they took our credit cards for payment and were rude and gave us sour faces. We weren't loud, or obnoxious, or any of that. Two of us contacted the owner multiple times via email and by phone to share what happened and not a single reply back. A couple of our friends are long time residents and they were shocked! As a business owner myself, when someone has a negative experience I feel responsible to at least hear them out and seek out how I can make it better.
