I emailed 4 possible groups, and Altair Trio stood out as the most reasonably priced, professional and prepared. Cynthia and I set everything up via email, which I loved. We discussed song lists, and she was more than happy to incorporate songs that weren't listed on their repertoire. She advised me on which songs would go together best, and offered to learn new songs, for an additional fee, if I chose to go that route. They agreed to come as a duo, and I booked them for an hour, less than the typical 1.5 hour minimum. Our wedding ended up starting more than 30 minutes late, but Cynthia and Michelle played and waited for us, and everyone really enjoyed the music. The late start meant they stayed later than planned. I so appreciated their flexibility! My only regret was that I never met them in person since I was busy getting married. The Altair Trio plays not only exceptional classical, but also classic rock, and even contemporary pop and experimental. I completely understand that not every child can have a leading role, but giving any child of this age such a marginal role during a two-week camp does not seem acceptable to me. In fact, she came home crying after the second day and said that this amount of text she could memorize in less than a day. What made me particularly sad and disappointed as a parent was not even the wasted money, but the missed growth opportunity. We use the summer break to expose our daughter to new activities and interests outside the classroom so she gets outside her comfort zone and can discover what she enjoys. From that perspective, these two weeks felt like a waste of time and potential.

We had a horrible experience with the Peninsula Youth Theatre summer camp program in Mountain View…read more First, the teaching staff is a group of inexperienced middle schoolers just a few years older than our first grad kid. It's clear they have no idea how to engage the kids. Second, the staff is rather rude and impatient with the kids. For example, the team in charge of the sound for the final performance made an unsolicited comment to one of the kids that he was so loud that she needed to turn down the speaker making the kid almost want to cry. Third, without even saying a word to us the parents, the staff made a false report to the Child Abuse & Neglect Center and initiated an investigation of because they are concerned of a potential child abuse of our kid!!! The investigation wasted our time and nearly scared our kids. It was surreal that we needed to explain to the county agent how a 7-year boy would have a scar on his knee from his soccer practice a few years ago. Both the agents and we are frustrated by the trouble the careless and inexperienced staff are causing us. Stay away from this program unless you want real dramas in your life!

Best wedding band ever! Night train took our wedding reception to the Next Level!…read more My wife and I thought long and hard over what to do for the music at our wedding. We're both huge live music fans, and love to dance. We knew we wanted a band, and Night Train was more in line with our musical tastes than all the others we looked at, but we were worried it "wouldn't be for everyone", and that we should either get a more standard wedding band or a DJ. Boy, are we glad we went with Night Train! We had a very broad range of age and musical taste among our guests, and let me tell you that Night Train satisfied all customers. Our friends and family are still bringing up how fun they were, and the wedding was four months ago. At first, we were a little worried about not having much control over the set list, but it was no problem at all. Michael started a shared spotify station with us, and we posted songs we liked on there over the few months before the wedding. Based off that and a few emails, the band created a surprise set list for us that completely blew us away. I had a moment where I heard The Beastie Boys on the radio, and I was like "F! We should have put more of this on our station!" I didn't bother to get in touch with the band, because this was like a week before the wedding, and they had already done their rehearsals. Next thing I know, they opened the dance party with "Fight For Your Right". It completely set the tone for the rest of the night! Later, they played "Give it Away" by the Chili Peppers, and my uncle looks to me and says "I hope they play 'Love Rollercoaster', I love that song." I was like "Yea, that would be cool, but that's a pretty deep track (Beavis and Butthead movie soundtrack), so I wouldn't get my hopes up." ...They played it like 5 songs later! There was one more unreal coincidence with the set: I have a serious emotionally rooted family connection to the Footloose soundtrack by Kenny Loggins. I never mentioned this to Michael, and they didn't play anything from that album.... But they did play "Danger Zone" by Kenny Loggins off the Top Gun soundtrack, which might have been even better! You should have seen the air guitars going on in the crowd for that one! So long story short: let the band do their thing and you will not be disappointed. I think the set they came up with was better than anything we ever could have dictated to them. A few other highlights were the bride crowd surfing in her wedding dress to "Aerials" by System of a Down, which the band learned by special request from me (and absolutely nailed), a Guns & Roses guitar solo involving a leaf blower, the female lead vocalist's voice on pretty much every song, and the Metallica mini set that they played that literally sounded like you were at a Metallica show. I manged to get a bloody lip during that one. It was PERFECT! For what it's worth, I've been told that bloodied lips and crowd surfing are optional. Good times and great dance parties are NOT!

I have been taking buttton accordion…read morelessons from him for a short while and have had so much fun and have learned some songs as well as music theory and about music from a variety of cultures. He is very patient and get you through any rough spots in songs. He and his wife Jena perform together as "Side by Side" as well as with a French ensemble called "Les Campangards". They are really wonderful and will often invite the audience to participate in singing, clapping, with shakers or with dance. Take lessons from Gary, hire Side by Side or Les Campagnards and you will be sure to have a great time with the gift of music.
