A very pleasant surprise. This place is tucked away down redwood retreat road underneath some beautiful evergreen trees that keep the place nice and cool even on hot days. The winery features a beautiful layout with plenty of sitting arrangements all around the garden and you'll definitely be receiving the five star treatment. Im fact, I am surprised that Fernwood's operation isn't way bigger because the price is right and the wine is unparalleled. Definitely try the mirepoix while you're out here. It's my favorite.

First off I want to say to say that the service here was impeccable. John was our main server and he went above and beyond, he really made us feels like family. His knowledge about the winery and wine in general was good, he taught us a lot about the different wines and where they originate and come from. Come and try this winery out, you will not regret the scenic drive and peaceful experience here. Bring cash for tips! They deserve every penny. Their wines are so tasty. we will definitely come back

Beautiful winery we bike to regularly during covid, while I've been out of work the place is beautiful. Would be nice to check it out sometime

Hidden gem. Great wines, great service. You should make a reservation because it is pretty tiny

Few things in life are as enjoyable as wine. Even to a novice such as myself, I can appreciate the effort it takes to produce a good wine. But I never considered how the experience at a winery can add to the enjoyment. We didn't stumble on Fernwood Cellars by accident. Our visit was prompted by a recommendation from family who live nearby. The area surrounding Gilroy and Morgan Hill is beautiful countryside! Prepare to be impressed as you take a short drive off the beaten path which takes you into a canyon where the scenery is even more spectacular. And the icing on the cake is losing cell coverage. Put down your device and focus on the wine. Fernwood Cellars has been around for almost 25 years, but the vineyards have been in the family for well over a century. While I don't frequent wineries often (I'm from Arizona, so really, like never) I still enjoy learning about wines and how they are made. There are multiple wine tasting rooms on site and a venue for weddings plus accommodations for private group events. You can stroll around and take in the setting, play games or just sit by the stream that crosses the grounds. Gina served our flight of wines, starting with their Chardonnay and ending with my favorite, a Cabernet Sauvignon. The tasting room was pretty busy but she was friendly and handled the crowd well. Fernwood Cellars doesn't sell their wine in stores. Trust me, this is a good thing. Their product is uniquely different. The aromas are familiar, but they don't compare to the stuff you can easily access anywhere. Comparatively speaking, every other wine I've tasted previously, seems homogenized. They all smell and taste the same. If you want to taste distinction, drive past all the winery signs on the way to Fernwood Cellars. And if you don't want to take the word of this novice, ask the folks at the competing wineries which grapes they purchase from Fernwood. Then you will know.

We visited on 10/31/2021. What a beautiful place in Gilroy. We sat outside and enjoyed the ambiance and the wines. The seating is spread out amongst the Pine and Oak trees. This was just what we needed after a long drive. Side cut is a red blend that I would highly recommend. We loved the Rose and that is not a wine we usually enjoy. The staff was so knowledgeable and friendly. We enjoyed so many of the wines that we will be back next time we are in the area.

Hi Julia - Due to our unique setting, where wild life is fairly abundant, we only permit leashed service animals. We hope you are able to come visit & enjoy our special wines.

The staff member behind the bar greeted us with a blank, deadpan stare (otherwise known as a "GenZ Stare") that made the whole interaction feel awkward from the start. When we mentioned it was our first time visiting and that we were excited to be there, there was no warmth, no enthusiasm, and no effort to tell us about the wines or the property. Even the pours seemed careless. I know this is Gilroy and not Napa, but I still expected a welcoming experience and better wine service. Unfortunately, both the service and the wine itself were disappointing. The best part of this place was definitely the beautiful grounds, which would make a gorgeous wedding setting. Maybe this place is better suited as an event venue than a wine tasting destination, but based on my experience, I would not return. The two stars are for the beautiful grounds.

When…read moreyou think of wine, you often think of heading to Napa or Paso Robles, but you'll never think that deep in the hills of Gilroy (borderline Morgan Hill), there's this small and beautiful vineyard. I haven't been to Italy but having seen it in movies, this place sure gives you the feels of having traveled that far for a glass of wine. It's a small vineyard with such an intimate and relaxing setting. The owners, Drew and Tiffany, are friendly, chill, and easygoing. Even though we've met them for the first time through a mutual friend, my husband and I felt comfortable talking to them as if we've known them for some time. They're very personable and well versed with their wines, and I love the stories behind some of the names for their wines. You'll also be greeted by their sweet and gentle black lab, Bear, who walks around saying hi to the guests. My husband and I both did the Estate Reds tasting as we love reds, especially Cabernets. I'm not a wine connoisseur at all, but I do like to enjoy a glass of wine here and there. The reds were delish, though I enjoyed The House (light) and Vino Nona (deep and bold) best. However, given another couple of years, I think Vino Nona would have an exceptional taste. And oh, you must try the Frozé (Frozen Rosé) or that I hope you get the chance as I heard they do run out of it fast. Such a yummy adult icee that is so refreshing with a good taste of the Rosé wine. I have 2 young boys, so I always love places that are kid and family friendly! This place is big enough for the boys to run and explore with areas for pictures and games. There's also a cute swing for anyone needing that nice picture to post. And one more thing, the portable bathroom is amazing! I'm never a fan of portable bathrooms, but this one is not a bit scary at all. It kinda reminds me of the bathroom on the airplanes but much nicer. Great escape for a few hours to enjoy with your significant other and/or with friends. Definitely nice place for small events. P.s. There is also a menu for light snacks, which I forgot to take a picture of.

We had our choice of indoor and outdoor seating, and opted for the nice covered outdoor patio. They had a good amount of seating in each area, and had a lot of shade outside, which is absolutely necessary in Gilroy. The patio and grass area was very pretty, filled with lots of plants and even a sculpture. The property is also next to a plant nursery, so that added to the beauty even beyond their property line. We were helped by Melissa, and she was great! They had two tasting flights of 4 wines to choose from on our visit, one of which included a white and reds, while the other was all reds. They did also have some extra bottles open, so they were able to make an all white wine flight for one in our party. I started my membership back, thought we'd utilize the wine tasting. On out third pour same day- fist day back we were accused of trying to get an extra pour Aaron asked what pour we were on, we didn't have a response because we didn't have the menu, we were accused of getting any extra pour? Not our responsibility to keep track, and if you did an extra pour what is the big deal? The comment made us feel uncomfortable, we stayed and purchased a bottle from their reserved red wine. This Saturday we went with another couple and my granddaughter. All was fine untill our third pour, we paid extra for the reserved tasting and it was a splash not a tasting pour. We discussed if we should say anything at all, and we decided to ask for a decent pour. My husband went in , talked to Aaron, he declined and dismissed us. Aaron said we had a decent pour, even though he was not around to see what was poured?? Typically a winery allows more than the 4 or 5 tasting, how else will you know if you like it enough to purchase a bottle. If a winery treats members that way it's time to end membership, and we did.
