3.5 stars Synopsis: Food was good, drinks really yummy, and decorations for Christmas were really festive. Service was just ok and prices are pretty high. We went on a Tuesday night at 6pm. It wasn't very packed maybe 25-40 percent full. They have 2 banquet/large party rooms and one family was in one of them. The rest of the restaurant was sparse for a party of two away from The cold breeze/wind from the door they host said to we should go the tall tables in the bar area. We sat and waited a few mins and then someone dropped off chips and salsa. A few more mins later we had our server who was also the bartender taking our drink order. Then eventually our meal order. We asked for waters and they eventually came out with our mixed drinks. Food came out a few mins after. And the drinks were really good and the food was delicious. I had enchiladas suizas and hubby had the combination plate with 2 tacos and a cheese enchilada. It was hot, perfect juicy flavor, great food. We enjoyed our food and drinks but it was pretty pricey - 2 basic entrees and 2 mixed drinks was $70 before tip and a credit card usage charge. Service could be improved for the price you are paying. I know they are in a pricey area so I get that but the service quality was not matching the prices. it seemed like they were low on staff? It was a bit strange to be seated at the bar area that was the most full area of the restaurant and only have the bartender serving everyone in that area and making drinks for all the orders in the main room. My opinion -they could really benefit from a happy hour, I didn't see one advertised or on the menu, but a few discounted drinks and appetizers would draw in more people read more

Amazing service, and the staff and management is very accommodating! I had a private dinner event, they went above and beyond to make sure the room was ready in time. The ambiance is nice for Bakersfield and the restaurant seemed packed on a Tuesday evening. The food was good as well, large portions and tasty. I will be returning. read more

We always have a great experience at SYL. The staff is very friendly and attentive. We love it there. It was my son's birthday and this restaurant was his choice, when he could have gone anywhere. We really like the decor. You feel as if you're in a Mexican restaurant but it is classy and feels special. This is great place for a date as well as a large family dinner. The food is always amazing. The salsa has to be one of the best in Bakersfield. I ordered the shrimp relleno. Chicken mole was also ordered. They make their own mole and you can tell. We've been here three times. Twice for a celebration and once for a date night. Every meal has been delicious and fresh! Drinks are perfect, service was attentive and excellent each time! The manager was there two of the times and checked on us both occasions. She was very involved with the staff as well as interactive with the patrons, I love seeing that. The decor is gorgeous- from the plates, the chairs and tables, the bar, dining rooms, all of it. Plus, they offer alfresco dining too. They have at least one room that can be used for parties or meetings, as well as the ability to close the doors to the bar to separate that as well. One of my favorite things that's unique about this restaurant is that there is a little windowed room in the main dining area that you can watch someone make your tortillas by hand fresh! Totally unique and cool to see that, as well as knowing your tortillas are made there fresh daily. If you've never been, you should make this spot a priority for lunch, dinner, or book a celebration. read more

I'm just not a fan. I like fun decor, comfortable seats, and good food. I want to relax and indulge. This is not the place for that. It looks very nice and fancy, so for people wanting the upscale experience this is perfect. The higher prices matched that experience as well as but not the food. The food was average at best. Like cafeteria food. And it was the same food you get from any Mexican restaurant, just not as good and more expensive. There didn't appear to be any unique offering. To add to the experience, our server had an air of superiority that was very off-putting. Not friendly and not helpful. It was very hard to get refills or more chips and salsa. The restaurant itself was cold. Any every time someone opened the door, most of the restaurant got blasted with freezing cold air. I saw people at other tables getting annoyed with it too. Like for the love of all that is good and holy, shut the door!!! I absolutely hate doing low stars on businesses. I just really did not enjoy this and for me it's a 1 star. When I have a hankering for mole, this is where I go. I mean they have other great dishes and don't forget the tortillas are always freshly made! But the mole... I mean how can it be so rich, spicy and layered with flavors? Obviously they make it in house, nothing tasting that good comes from a jar. I mean maybe you don't like mole, but have you tried this one? It's one mind-changing mole... I know people who decided they actually like mole after trying this one. This restaurant is really cute. They get 5 starts on cleanliness, throughout my stay there was staff cleaning the chairs and tables. However, the food was just ok. It is definitely not authentic Mexican food. The portion sizes are on the smaller side, maybe that's just to me because I'm fat lol. I ordered the enchiladas suizas and it was just very bland. Most of their dishes come with a side or rice and beans, they're both flavorless. The food came out extremely quick. They took longer to bring our drinks. The drinks are delicious though !!! 5 starts for the drinks! It is on the pricier side, I paid about 40 dollars for my food and one drink. I'm rating the food instead of the overall experience. If I included the excellent service and how nice the owner was, then I would give it a five stars. However, I don't think people are coming here for fine ding and excellent service. They want good Mexican cuisine. This is where it failed. Why offer a ribeye steak when you can offer a steak fajita? I was so disappointed in the steak. At least grill it or something. I think it was just cooked on a pan because the temperature wasn't right and the fatty ribeye wasn't charred. It wasn't very good. The food was good, chile relleno was tasty and they have options to fill with meat not just the standard cheese. Missing food. Terrible service. No table for anniversary party reservation. Ordered a Mexican Black bean and corn salad. The salad was brought to the table with only a lettuce, onion, tomatoes, and chicken. Literally nothing else on it. I first noticed there were no black beans and notified the waiter. The wait came back and told me they ran out of black beans, they could bring me pinto beans instead. I accepted. I then noticed there was no corn or any type of Mexican cheese which would be typical on a black bean and corn Mexican salad, so I notified the waiter, he said they ran out of corn too but they brought me cheese. I asked the waiter if they could waive the meal since we didn't get nearly at all what we asked for. He said he couldn't but he would go ask the manager, he quickly returned and said he wouldn't be able to waive it period. I then said, may I speak to your manager, because it's obvious the order was not what I ordered, he went back to request the manager, but the manager would not come out. He said that they could refund the plate if I returned the plate to them, this was not acceptable to me since everyone had already received there meals and we had been there for nearly an hour already. Very unfortunate experience since it was my parents 40 year anniversary and I had recommended the location. I will not be coming back, and I will let everyone know how shitty the service is here. Like how the F do you serve a BLACK BEAN AND CORN salad without the BLACK BEANS AND CORN. Literally, any restaurant would have 1. Told me that you didn't have the ingredients before you served it to me so I could make a different choice, or 2. Waive my meal. That's basic service. On another note, we booked a table for 6pm for an anniversary party, we get there and we have to wait 30 minutes. Then they tell us we will have to wait up to an hour, unless we go sit at the bar. Poor customer service 9 of us ladies went there to celebrate a bday.. Our waitress was unprofessional and made us feel unwelcome. We had experienced the worst customer service ever, we had to leave before we even ordered anything! The waitress was super rude just because we asked her kindly to add a chair because someone that was coming from out of town was able to make it last minute. She right away raised her voice saying this table was only for 9 she can't add any more chairs bc that'll block the way, she didn't offer any solutions or alternatives, she didn't sound like she cares to help, when we asked ok what do we do she said let me ask the manager. She left and didn't come back to us just to let us know what's going on she was helping her other tables we felt ignored bc we were waiting for a response at least! Another employee was walking by we stopped him to ask to speak to a manager our waitress yeld to him from far away speaking in Spanish, shook her head telling him not to help us! And she told us I'm busy when I finish I'll come to you.. really?! Why didn't she tell us that from the beginning and say I'll be right with you or something more professional. Right there we had to speak to a manager, our problem wasn't that we couldn't add a chair it became the way we were treated. Finally the manager came she wasn't so friendly either she said yes I gave the instructions not to add a chair.. and she said there's a bigger table that might become available soon. I said we're not arguing the rules and we'd fallow your instructions but that wasn't the way to speak to your customers she should've acknowledge us better and let us know that she'll at least try to help, But she didn't. The manager and the waitress started out talking to us aggressively from the beginning like if were fighting or breaking the rules, that wasn't the case, we were just asking kindly. This Beautiful Place is Rapidly becoming one of my favorites...Anywhere! We made a special request for vegetarian nachos that was pretty darn good. The 10 ounce ribeye steak with 6 sautéed shrimp was also decent. The indisputable champion was their custom chocolate and regular flan, that tasted like a combination of delicious flan with cheesecake. Holy Smokes this place is FIRE! First of all, I love Mexican food...but my husband is "over it" so I never really get to eat it anymore . So when my girls said we were hitting up Sol y Luna for girls night, I was excited to give it a try! When I arrived 2 of the 4 girls had already gotten there and ordered the fresh guacamole and chips. I quickly grabbed a chip and dipped it in the guac and was amazed by how flavorful both the chips and guac were....I was already impressed. They also both had drinks in front of them. One ordered the Cadillac margarita and the other the mango chamoy margarita...both were great! Never one to fall behind I quickly ordered MDOTM (my drink of the moment), the lemon drop! It was the perfect mix of sweet and sour, but lacking on the sugar rim. Our fourth arrived and we all ordered. One ordered the steak fajitas, another ordered the shrimp fajitas, and me and my other friend both went with the shrimp chili relleno's. My rice and beans were awesome and the chili relleno was great with its cheesy sauce and sautéed onions and shrimp but it was salty! Everyone else had nothing bad to say about theirs so maybe My mouth was just being sensitive ‍. We ended up closing the place down and drinks we flowing. I stuck with the lemon drops but the girls ordered everything from a white sangria to the cucumber jalapeño margarita. Came here for a work lunch. We were a big party and they only had 2 waiters working at the time which extended our service time. There were so many of us and the seats were uncomfortable. Luckily we had a 2 hour lunch instead of 1hour. I got the fish taco lunch plate. It was pretty good but felt it needed more flavor. There are some very good Mexican restaurants in Bakersfield, but Sol y Luna is my favorite restaurant, hands down. You can tell the great care that is put into each dish, and I have never been disappointed when we have gone there. It has a nice, special occasion/ upscale, ambiance. When I want to have a special meal, if I have friends come in from out of town, we take them to Sol y Luna. My current favorites are the green chili, ribs, table side guacamole and also I LOVE their soups and soft tacos, particularly the chorizo tacos. (And the margaritas, see below.) I take too long savoring the meatball soup, and my boyfriend complains. He has tried several dishes also, and has loved the fajitas, enchiladas, and the burritos. I think it's the Luna burrito that has the different savory sauces on top. One of my friend's favorites is the refried beans and the shrimp tacos. Really, the refried beans are ridiculously delicious. The people who work there are very kind and attentive. The best service, by far. The bar area is beautiful. I just asked my boyfriend what his favorite was at Sol y Luna and he yelled, "THE MARGARITAS BABY!" I could have started this review with the statement that "there is no place that makes margaritas as good as Sol y Luna." But that would have made me seem like an alcoholic lol... Anyway, my baby says you you have to run, not walk to try their Cadillac margaritas! It's not just the large size (don't you just hate paying an arm and a leg for a small glass of mostly ice?) The cadillac margaritas come with a little bottle of Grand Marnier. Cool! They have to die for jalapeño and pineapple margaritas too. And if you are not driving, you should one of each! During this tough time for restaurants, I'm really struck about how giving all the people who work there are. You know how usually just the waiters/waitresses get the tips? Yesterday, I had the pleasure of dining at Sol Y Luna. My Aunt and Uncle had traveled from the central coast to present an award at Shafter High in memory of their recently deceased son. Upon walking through the parking lot, my uncle fell and badly injured his arm and knee. Suddenly, an angel appeared and brought us bandages and wipes and started helping my uncle. Little did we know our angel was the owner of Sol Y Luna. After helping us she ushered us inside to a quiet table where we could sit and regain our composure. Her staff continued assisting us and we were able to enjoy an amazing meal. I cannot say enough about the caring nature of this place and the incredible food. This place is exquisitely fancy. I enjoy the ambiance and the decor, and the food is slightly above average - better than Don Perico, not as good as Nuestros. The staff is very friendly but for some reason there is hardly anyone here whenever I stop in for a meal. I have attended book signings by little known authors with a more lively crowd. This place is dead. Vacant. Empty. The only reason I can think of is the prices. They are a bit high for standard Mexican fare, but I suspect the rent is through the roof. Combined with the extravagant flatware, they have to offset those costs somewhere. read more

Dinner on a Sunday and maybe a few tables had people. The welcoming by the hostess was not welcoming, like we were interrupting her doing whatever she was doing with the utensils. The waiter was nice but never saw him again. It took a while to even get our waters. This experience was lack luster. The food wasn't great. The service was slow. We had to waive wait staff down for a refill on our waters and for our check. If you're looking for authentic Mexican food and food with flavor, then steer clear.... This is 100% a 2 star restaurant but i'm giving 3 stars as service was prompt. We visited at prime dinner time 7pm and the restaurant was almost completely empty with only 10 dining (first sign this wouldn't be great). The ambiance was nice but it felt more like it should be an upscale/middle of the road steakhouse decor than a Mexican restaurant. Chips & Salsa were promptly brought out - the salsa was the only flavorful thing of our entire meal and we only received a small bowl with no offer to refill during our meal. We ordered the chili con queso (very pasty and lacking of any type of taste), carnitas (tender - but bland pork roast served with burnt onions), and a combination dish of chicken enchilada and taco (taco came out burnt and split open while the enchilada wasn't bad but very unflavorful). The only item of our meal that tasted great was the refried beans. Both meals were served with wilted salad mix as a garnish. The price of the food is a joke - extremely overpriced. If you're going to charge $36 an entree at a Mexican restaurant, it better be outstanding. Overall, a very disappointing experience - we will not be back. read more

Atmosphere was very nice, and staff was pleasant other than that will not go back. Made reservations for a 40th anniversary dinner. Arrived 15 early as we were told we could bring ballons and some decorations and wanted to make sure we arrived before to set up.we were told we would still have to wait an hour for our table even with a reservation. They ended up putting tables together near the bar about 20 min later and we were seated. Had to continously remind server about drinks, waters, and chips. Both my sons had asked for refill on drinks 3 times server finally refilled 5 min before we left after an hour of waiting. Order came and we were waiting for a child's plate for 15 min after all the other plates arrived only to be told they had forgotten to start the order. One of our guests ordered the black bean salad, when they brought it out it had no black beans, cheese, or corn, we were told they didn't not have corn or black beans only after asking if they had missed some items. Not sure how you forget that your missing 3 ingredients of a dish and still attempt to serve it the professional thing to do would have been to let us know so we could at least have the option to order something else and not waste the plate. When we did ask for an adjustment the manager who came out and stared us down when we left, would not come out to speak with us about ordering something else and told the server they could not make any adjustments. The plate was sent back and at the end the waiter did adjust the plate off. Very unprofessional though of the manager. The taste of the food was mediocre. I had the Mole Enchiladas they were avg along with the beans and rice nothing especially stood out. Nothing bad just weird serving a mixed salad on the side of a Mexican dish with no dressing just kinda hanging out for no reason. Beans were not very flavorful.
