What a true hidden gem in my stomping grounds of edgewater. I hope this spot continues to succeed and grow. I came in for lunch with my date, we had great service, delicious food, and even better conversation with the hostess (forgive me I forget her name, but she was a young very sweet and social chick working around 1 pm on a Friday). The portions are generous and the prices are very modest. I will absolutely come back soon. tostones rellenos: i grabbed 2 chicken and 2 shrimp. these are a must get. they can be shared or eaten as an entree like i did. i loved them, and would get them again. theyre very full and have enough flavor on them. i preferred the chicken over the shrimp for sure, i wish the shrimp pieces were a little bigger. creamy corn soup was nice, not too overpowering, but the sweetness of the corn comes through. we closed it off with a dessert empanada. the arroz con leche is a must get. i loved the brown sugar and cinnamon on the outside. do not sleep on this dessert! read more

It was our first time trying Sofrito, and it won't be our last. We had the Alitas Caribeñas (jerk chicken wings), Rabo Encendido (oxtail stew), Paella Valenciana, and Churros. Every dish was flavorful and delicious. The restaurant location is small, but the food tastes like it was prepared with pride and care. This is a hidden gem. Update: We went back for a second time this evening. I met two of Sofrito's staff while I was there, Jorge and Tatiana, and they were great. I came here with a friend for dinner and didn't realize from the photos just how small this place actually is. When I overheard they were expecting a party of seven, I decided to sit outside. The outdoor seating is basically in a cramped alley, and the tables looked a bit flimsy, but the waitress was very gracious--she wiped everything down, pushed two tables together for us, and really took care of us throughout the night. Service outside was attentive and warm, with great recommendations and frequent check-ins. The food was very good and extremely affordable for the portion sizes. The Caribbean wings (about 7 for $13) could easily be a meal on their own, as could the stuffed tostones. My friend preferred the chicken tostones cups over the beef. I had the chicken milanesa, which came with a sweet mustard sauce. The portion was hearty, and I swapped the rice and beans for tostones--crispy outside, fluffy inside, and well seasoned. Everything was cooked with care and flavor. The menu itself is broad and interesting--lots of Caribbean favorites but also South American options, including a whole ceviche section. I even noticed a chicharrón ceviche, which I'd never seen before. Definitely something for everyone. That said, the restaurant has some limitations. The space isn't really set up for dine-in and feels more suited for takeout. Operationally there are a few kinks: no tap water, no dedicated restroom (just one accessed by walking through the kitchen, which doesn't feel sanitary), and the outside ambiance is a little overdone with bright lights and flowers that come off more kitschy than refined--especially compared to Terravita right next door. Would I return? Probably, but more for takeout than dining in. read more

The food here is delicious....first time I ordered from them and it won't be the last. I ordered the corn soup which was fantastic and the arepa rellena....the best!!! They also gave me an apple desert which I didnt think I could eat after all the food ....but I did and it was great!! Can't wait to try the beef soup....I heard that also was very good! read more

Saw this place on Yelp and stopped by for lunch. Small and cute spot, Monse at the counter was super sweet and on point. The vibe was nice, but the food... eh. I ordered the fish expecting snapper -- got fish sticks (cod fillets) instead. Coconut rice had actual coconut shreds, not my thing. Beans were whatever. My friend's boneless chicken? Way better, that I'd order. Soup that came with it was good but needed more flavor. I also thought this was a Cuban spot -- it's not. Overall, cute place, but nothing I'd run back to. read more

A new gem in Edgewater. This place opened a while ago, and despite the inviting decor and beautiful pictures online, I was reluctant to try it. I am usually suspicious of tiny places that remind me of the 'hole in the wall' concept. Well, when dinning in this new restaurant I was reminded that some 'holes in the wall' get a Michelin star. While I am not sure that they are ready for a star just yet, this is absolutely a fine dinning experience presented with a modest facade. Service was impeccable with friendly staff and a creative chef who visibly cooks with his heart. From the dishes we tried, the beef stew was grounding and reminded me of home. It tasted like the Columbian classic soup. My husband had a fish dish with tomato and lobster sauce. I didn't catch the name, but the flavor and preparation was AMAZING! We also tried the flan - it was rich, dense, creamy, and sweet with a touch of fruit that tasted like guava. As for the ceviche - I am a fan of the classic Peruvian Lèche De Tigre. The dish here was a play on that with a creative combination of passion fruit, mango and a spice that came as a second wind in my mouth. It was cool to experience the flavors kicking in at different times. Overall, what an experience! I walked in expecting a hole in the wall and fearing to order ceviche (and get food poisoning...) and was pleasantly surprised this uniquely creative menu, beautiful plating, talented chef and welcoming atmosphere.
