Look, I had never heard of the City of Dublin before moving to the East Bay. So when my wife was searching for some "sEoul" food on the Yelp app to satisfy her inner Korean and she came across this little Korean café in Dublin, I thought she was talking about some fucking place in Ireland. No joke. Although rice cakes with Irish whiskey is a pretty good pairing. Again, no joke. So immediately after she showed me the pictures on the Yelp app, BAM! I pressed bookmark! Like the City of Dublin, I had never heard of the Korean word "sodam" before. I used Google Translate and that shit was useless. It wasn't until I typed some stuff in Korean that I got the definition (http://bit.ly/1MY1534) that sodam is an adjective that has the following definitions (again I am not joking around): pleasantly plump (WTF), buxom, juicy, tasty, nice and rich, full of good things... Never knew this word was "so-dam" naughty hahaha. Definitely adding this word to my everyday vocabulary. So... on a serious note, when we arrived at Sodam, we were annoyed because we could not find a parking spot. You see, it is located in a strip mall with a major deficiency in parking spaces. Also, it does not help that ajummas (Korean ladies) that eat at Sodam don't leave. They just sit there and just gossip and talk shit all day. SMH. Anyways, after we found parking, we walked into a little café that was larger than it looked from the outside. To the left of the entrance were refrigerators filled with kimchi and other delectable side dishes; to the right of the entrance were about 7-8 tables; and straight ahead was the cashier with rice cake desserts and kimbap rolls encompassing the register. We immediately ordered the tteokbokki (spicy rice cake) that was $5 for a small container and we bought a spicy garlic stem side dish. The tteokbokki takes about 10 minutes, so here's a pro tip. Call ahead foolios. Look, we have had tteokbokki in Los Angeles and in Korea, and honestly, Sodam's tteokbokki is pretty fucking legit. It was a real surprise, akin to finding out that a skinny ass 3-point-shooting kid with ankle problems from Davidson College would help the Dubs win the NBA Championship. The garlic stem side dish was equally tasty. On a subsequent visit, I picked up some kimchi as well and that was pretty good. However, we always get the tteokbokki. I mean sure, it is pricey compared to Korea or Los Angeles, but shit, everything is fucking overpriced in the Bay Area so stop whining. They also have other stuff but we've only really had the tteokbokki so we can't comment if you did not like some other shit. At the end of the day, I loved how the pleasantly plump rolls of cylindrical rice cakes covered in buxom spicy sauce were juicy, tasty, nice and rich, and full of good things. In other words, the tteokbokki was SODAM - as in So-DAMN-GOOD. My only gripes? The aformentioned lack of parking... Also, they are closed on Sundays probably for religious reasons... and "Irish" Sodam was a little closer to my house. FML. read more

Wow! Hidden gem in the Tri-Valley! My friend told me about this place so I had to check it out and wow, I was amazed! This is a mom and pop shop that's located in the corner of the Dogtopia plaza (next to Goodwill) and it's very small, hard to spot. They sell all sorts of Korean side dishes including kimchi, shredded radish, fish cakes, etc. They also sell Korean desserts and rice cakes, which I didn't try. I picked up some side dishes, gimbap (Korean sushi), japchae, and chicken wings; they were all really good. The stuff are well marinated and very flavorful. It's even better than the side dishes at some Korean restaurants. The prices are also very reasonable. The side dishes are mostly around $5 and the portions are big. There's no need to drive all the way to H Mart SJ for side dishes anymore. Sodam is THE ultimate spot for Korean side dishes and more! read more

A little hidden gem in the middle of Dublin. It's a cute little shop hidden in the corner of a strip mall that satisfies all your Korean food needs. It's by no means a huge supermarket but it has all the essentials! The lotus root is SO good and the fishcake comes with huge portion. A very unassuming mom-and-pop operation. Sort of like a Korean mini mart/fast food hole-in-the-wall in a strip mall sandwiched between Goodwill and the gas station. They have a small hot food menu; some Korean dried goods, mostly snacks; and about 3 reach-in refrigerators full of ready-to-eat ban chan and ready-to-cook food. Only half the store is a grocery, the other half is a seating area with tables and chairs for customers who choose to dine in. Order and pay at the cashier. They bring the food out to you. I picked up some marinated bulgogi meat to cook for the dinner party tonight. I got some pickled baby cukes and jap chae. I also got that addictive dried anchovy ban chan that is chewy and slightly sweet and spicy. I forgot to pick up kimchi the first time around. Had to come back a second time just before dinner. One thing I didn't care for, none of the containers of ban chan made in house were labeled with a name and sell by or use by dates. At least most of the shelf space was labeled with a name and some were not. Names were in both Korean and English but some of the English names were not very helpful. So I stuck to foods I could visually recognize. In the past, I've tried their hot soup with rice cakes and kimbap, the Korean version of a sushi roll. Located at a tiny strip mall where parking is almost non existence during busy lunch hour. They only have a small food menu, which consists of staple korean fare. Whenever I crave for tteokbuki or soondae or kkimbap, this is my go to place. They either have ready made kkimpap right by the registers or they can make it for you. -Their tteokbuki is also made to order. There are some days where their tteokbuki (long cylindrical rice cake with fish cake, green onions) is a little on the watery side, but the taste still the same. -Their soondae from what the lady told me weren't made on the house. It has a more gelatinous taste in them where the blood congealed and it just tastes delish. - Kkimbap is freshly made and I always get their beef. I need to try the other ones too. They also sell different kinds of korean tteok and banchan (side dishes). You can also get the veggies to go with your bibimbap. The prices are budget friendly and the service is always excellent. I haven't had any bad experience in this place and I just kept coming back for more. We also tried their rolls and fried chicken. They were both tasty and filling. I look forward in going back to try their Kimchi. Service was prompt. It was mostly self-serve. Kimbap craving when I'm at work! Yes please. Despite the other pictures kimbap and dabukki are $5 each now. I usually come in the mornings and they are hard at work cooking up a storm in the back and packaging everything fresh for the day. Today they were cooking pancakes in the masses. You can't go wrong with the kimbap and for $5 you get about 20 pieces. The dabukki is good too. Could be spicier but goodness they give you a good amount and you are stuffed afterwards. It also comes with fish cake in it The dabukki usually takes about a 10+ minute wait so be prepared to stick around... All the pickled goods in the fridge section look delicious but is a bit more on the pricey side. Next time I want to try the rainbow cake and maybe the pancake mmmmm I can't believe I've been working down the street for three years and I haven't even noticed this place. read more

I like this place to grab something fast for my kids to eat. They have ready to go kimbap, beef is my fav and fish cake is my kid's fav. They have refrigerated food but I just come for the kimbap. The customer service is really good and they are friendly. If you don't see anymore kimbap, just ask and they will make it for you right away. Man, how do I not have a review for this local mom-n-pop Korean market? I mean, ever since my coworker introduced me to this little nook, I've recommended Sodam to so many people. Why? Because it's SO-DAM good! Yes there's the Tofu House across the street, and the newer pricier GoGoong nearby, but come here if I'm in the mood for some well-made elementary Korean food. It's basically set up as a market with a little cafe. They've got refrigerated pre-made items like kimchi and fish cakes, dessert goods on the racks, and also a few hot items on the counter. There's nothing fancy with the dining here, but you can either take from the fridge or place a hot order. Look up at the menu board above, and they'll serve you something fresh. Like kimbap! I'm SO-DAM glad my Korean coworker introduced me to this place. It's kinda my 'go-to' now. Here's a few things I've tried: ~ Spicy Fish Cake! Probably my favorite, only because it taste way fresher than what you'd get served at a restaurant with banchan. I forget the price because I usually just grab it and go. ~ O-Deng Gook fish cake soup ($4.50) and noodles ($5). They usually serve this really really hot. Not spicy hot, but boiling hot. Let it cool, and it's really a simple tasting soup. ~ Bulgogi Kimbap ($5), is another favorite of mine. It's bite-sized and shareable. Can't go wrong taking taking this on the go! ~ Gobo ($6), it's not bad, but also not something I normally get. It's salty and sweet, but it's just a root to me. Maybe I should eat it with rice. ~ Deokbokki ($5), WHAT'S UP!!! Love these long spicy rice cakes!!! I'd say they make it just right. It's another item worth trying. ~ Fish Cake Kimbap ($5), well I like their fish cake, so of course I'm gonna love it in a kimbap. ~ Korean Shaved Ice ($9), ahhh a refreshing dessert you can share. It's not fancy like Snowflake or the others, but it's decent. Good for the kids too of course. ~ Glazed Chicken Wings ($10), now these are new. And they're quite tangy and tasty! So we were extremely excited to find Sodam in Dublin! Nice, small shop with two friendly ladies at the counter. The Kimbap and other foods are already prepared and you just grab and go. We decided to get the Fishcake, beef and GOBO Kimbap. We ate it at the provided tables they have in the store and we loved it! Kimbap was delicious!! During our short stay we saw and noticed many customers come in and grab the Kimbap among other Korean Street food so we joined in the fun and grabbed some more Kimbap to go. This is my go-to spot to satisfy my Korean cravings. Perfect for a quick bite to-go. My favorites are: 1. Doekk bokki: sauce is on point - just the right amount of spice and sweetness. I wish it was a little less runny, but that's just my personal preference. The rice cakes are cooked perfectly along with the fish cakes. Yum! 2. (Bulgogi) Kimbap: perfect lunch to take to work or out on a trip. I wish there was just a little more seasoning in the bulgogi, but the rice is cooked perfectly and the vegetables are fresh and crisp. 3. The place is like a little snack shop of sorts that makes all kinds of Korean home style goodies and faves like kim bap, soon dae (stuffed blood sausage), dduk (all kinds), and some entrees like marinated raw bulgogi (thin sweet marinated meat) and a nice surprise, spicy geh-jang (raw crab)! Also they have a few drink selections like my all time favorite, shik-hye (sweet rice punch). Total win! All items were really good with exception of the dduk, which was way too old for sale. We ended up dumping the whole thing and I hate throwing out food, so it left a bad taste in my mouth (-1). Firstly I'm not Korean, only interested in different cultures. I was recommended this place as authentic for Korean snacks and side dishes. This place is awesome, has a fantastic spread of stuff that tastes awesome. I am especially a fan of their nabak kimchi (radish water kimchi) and their garlic stems sides. So happy I stumbled upon this place on Yelp and checked it out! It's a cute little mom and pop shop for Korean food and snacks. Located in a small plaza not too far from the freeway and not difficult to find at all. I'm a huge fan of Korean food, but what caught my attention was the kimbap. Most places charge around $8 for it, but you can grab a whole plate here for $5, no tax. I got two beef kimbaps, but I realized that I probably should have tried the fish cake too. They're freshly made. You'll know because you can see the steam. Plenty of meat and veggies. I also looked in the fridge and they sell a bunch of side dishes at a reasonable price. Definitely a lot of kimchi! If I lived closer, this would be my go to spot for lunch. Everything is prepackaged and ready to go.
