[*3.25*] I don't frequent this store as I don't live near by, but around the Mid-Autumn festival time I enjoy seeing what items they have for myself & as gifts, and love their panda mascot haha.. Overall, most of the bread items we tried tasted standard for an Asian chain bakery - we enjoyed their ube bun & taro bun. Some items seem a lil pricier than average. Variety of items can also be limited. We also tried the fruit filled shortcakes to see if they'd make good gifts, and they were on the dry side, with the ratio of crust being too much for the filling (but the spouse still enjoyed it). This is an HK chain so their pineapple buns are expectedly not like the Taiwanese kind (slight difference in the bun topping). I was glad to successfully obtain some seasonal (Aug-Sep 2024) panda household items, also got some mini custard mooncakes to try which we enjoyed, and ended up ordering additional custard mooncakes online from the L.A. Came here & bought 4 egg tarts & 2 Vietnamese coffees.... Egg tarts 3/5 -- they come in pairs, so we bought 4. They are pretty big & the crust is flaky, which I really enjoyed. The egg custard was ok. Not super sweet, which I also appreciated. The over all flavor was a little bland. Vietnamese coffee 0/5 -- I will say, Vietnamese coffee can be a hit or miss but this was a hard miss for me. It almost tasted like Folgers instant coffee. HK Milk Tea: Something seemed off about the flavor, not as good as other HK MT I've tried. 3 stars on the flavor. However, the price, at $3.95, was a good deal, so I would give the total drink 4 stars. Altogether, I would give this place 3 stars, because if given the option I would rather go to Sheng Kee or 85C. In December 2023, I purchased a winter packaged box with penguin cookies and some pineapple cakes in it. I didn't open the box to check the inside because I bought it as a gift and never thought the cookies were expired. I purchased this for a family member who lives in S. CA. She tried 1 of the cookie and it tasted really bad. She end checked the bag and the label said March 2023! This had expired 9 months ago! I rarely keep bakery receipts but I did ask for a printed receipt that day because I wanted to see the points I have accumulated. As soon as after the Xmas holiday, I phoned in the Dublin store which is where I purchased the gift box and the rep on the phone said, ok being the receipt in and they will see what they can do. I showed them a picture of the expired cookie photo which my family sent to me and a copy of my receipt. The lady in the front wanted me to get another pack of the cookie instead of giving me a refund. Also she said there is no way they would put expired products in the gift boxes. The manager said since it was seasonal item, they no longer have the penguin cookies and would give me a full refund of the gift box. End result: I got the refund but I am still not very happy with their customer service. Not once did they apologize to say sorry for their mistake. The worker also said it's probably a handling error of forgetting to change the year to 2024 instead of 2023. This is pretty ridiculous to me. Not one "sorry for your inconvenience ". I had to make the time and drive back to get a refund. They should have offered me an apology at the very minimum. Also if I had given this gift box to a friend than someone who is close to me, it's such a bad reputation that the receiver would think I have them expired food for xmas. I strongly encourage anyone who buys gift boxes to check every single item inside for expiration date. A product from a bakery expiring 9 months is pretty ridiculous. read more

I hadn't been to Kee Wah Bakery in over a decade! I had been here before when I used to live in San Ramon. I stopped by last month for a quick snack. I got one of their BBQ Pork Buns and a Vietnamese Iced Coffee. Sorry to say, but the BBQ Pork Bun didn't taste good when I initially ate it. I bought two, and the second one I microwaved at home and it tasted a little better once it was warmed up. The Vietnamese Iced Coffee didn't taste like the drink is supposed to taste haha. This Kee Wah Bakery location is in the Dublin Ulferts Center. Parking is hit or miss here, as this is a pretty busy plaza, especially on weekends and weeknights. Parking was not too bad for a Sunday evening, but it was started to fill up. My family ordered a birthday sheet cake for a birthday dinner for my grandma here. This is one of my go-to Asian bakeries whenever I'm craving a pineapple bun or egg tart. On this visit, I picked up a whole mango mousse and green tea cake ($41) for a coworker's birthday. I've tried their cakes before and it is all very delicious! It was a hit at work! The cake is super light and not too sweet! I'm not a fan of all the whipped cream so this is my type of cake. I'm not 100% if the size but I think it's a standard 8 inch cake. Perfect size for us! Service is fantastic as always. If you give them your phone number, you can sign up to be their member and accumulate points towards other pastries items, cakes, etc. Store is always clean and they also sell fresh soy milk in the fridge next to the front door. Came by the other day and it was a tasty experience. Ordered a tiramisu from the mini fridge and it was surprisingly delicious! At $5.2 a slice, the bakery also accepted credit cards. The interior of the bakery was revamped so that the customer area is merely 10% of the pre-pandemic space. There is also no dine-in area. The tiramisu was light and fluffy. One of the very few true Hong Kong bakeries in the Bay Area. They have common items like pineapple buns, HK style hot dog buns, wifey cakes with wintermelon paste filling, moon cakes, various kinds of pineapple shortcakes and sliced toast, Portuguese and regular egg tarts. I've ordered cakes from Kee Wah bakery several times now and am always impressed by their cakes. First time I ordered cake for my little one's 100 day celebration. I got the fruit cake that time. It came with mixed fruits like strawberries, peaches, and blueberries. Their cake was delicious and fresh. The cake is soft and spongy with good air and not too heavy. The cake cream is really well made too. Usually I'm not a fan of cream because it's really sweet but their cream is just the right amount of sweetness. It's light and fluffy and perfect. 2nd cake I got from them is just two days ago. I got a strawberry cake for my birthday. The strawberry cake is a bit more expensive than the other cakes. It's around 8" or 9" and costs $38. I did like this cake more than the fruit cake. The cake topping comes with fresh cut strawberries and some blueberries too. The filling are fresh strawberries too which is delicious. I actually like this strawberry one better than the mixed fruit cake. The cake comes with just one candle and a happy birthday sign if you want one. This time the sign was a chocolate sign which is such a treat because I love chocolate. I've gotten several pastries from this place too and overall they are good. They have an assortment like red bean, cream, taro, etc. Overall would come back again to get cakes and pastries. read more

But have found them to be quite a bit more expensive than other bakeries. On this visit, I picked up a few items. Prices have gone up over the years and the baked goods have gotten smaller. I tried their pastries in the past and I'm not a fan of them. To me their buns are kinda tough and I prefer them to have a softer texture. I also noticed that their price is pretty high especially when compared with the prices you see in other places such as Chinatown, but maybe that wouldn't be a just comparison since Kee Wah store is definitely much nicer than those you can find in Chinatown. During today's visit, we decided to buy their square-shaped Green Tea Red Bean Cake, which was priced at $11. Not bad at all, especially when you have to scramble last minute trying to figure out what dessert to bring to your friends' house. And a green tea dessert seemed to always be a good option especially when your friends were Asian. The cake came in a nice box with a handle to carry it plus a plastic window to peek through to see the cake inside. Flavor wise, honestly, it wasn't matcha. I couldn't detect any tea or matcha flavor, but the cake was perfectly sweetened and the cream and read bean layers really complimented the sponge cake which had a really nice vibrant green color. I just left this place few minutes ago so if you're management reading this check who was working (most especially the male young cashier) today and you'll know who caused this a ONE star. I drive to this city from 40 MINUTES away 2x a month and I swear I always end up in Kee Wah because the coffee is really good! But every single time I instantly regret it! 1. The employees here are a hit & miss. You get the grouchy ones or you get the friendly ones. It's depending on their mood I guess. 2. This is the THIRD time I was standing there waiting for my coffee (I got my food in my bag/hand already), and finally a lady asked me what the heck are we still standing there for? Oh gee I don't know...I wanted to waste both MY time and my son's time because we have nothing else we need to do today. Or maybe because I love hearing my son's cry and flipping out as to why we're not going anywhere. ORRR maybe because it's so much fun watching all of you! NO! 'cause we're WAITING for my coffee for the 3rd fucking time!!! THIRD TIME! This happened last month, and the month before that and today. Third time! And you know what else is wrong? At his request, I Ordered a chestnut cake for my dad's birthday. I called in the morning for a noon pick up. They do not write on their cakes but offered a chocolate "card". When I arrived it was boxed and ready to go. They even included a plastic knife and a birthday candle. The "card" was a small oval of chocolate with the words happy birthday written in white chocolate which was better than I expected. I'm often disappointed by Chinese bakeries because I can never quite exactly get the items that remind me of my childhood. Because of this I tend to frequent Chinese bakeries looking for those delicious memories. Kee Wah did not disappoint me! First, the store itself is nicely laid out and really cute. There's even a small space to sit if you want to enjoy your pastry there. I was slightly confused at first because I've never been to a place where you get a tray, line it, and take tongs to grab your items. But it was pretty self explanatory. Second, the pastries are really good. Some more than others... Here's my breakdown: Crunch bun: Get this! Just do it. This is a must have. This item was definitely my "Ratatouille" flashback moment. Red Bean bun: Perfect bean taste and really pretty to look at Coconut Cream bun: The sponge was a little dry exacerbated by the dry coconut on the outside. I'm not a huge fan of the butter filling either so I didn't really eat that part. Lotus One Yolk Moon cake: Pretty good. Not exactly worth the price though. The service was ok. By no means was anyone rude to me or slow or anything but I just noticed a difference in attitude toward non-Chinese customers. Also, I mistakenly forgot to line my tray with paper and she said something (in Mandarin) to her co-worker, which is fine but you also have to remember that you don't know who can speak what languages based on how they look. read more

My hubby and I are big fans of the bakery and regular customers. The only reason we rated two stars for our visit this time is trying to alert the owner regarding the training of the employees on how to handle food. The girls helped us today were really kind and sweet. However, when i came back to home, I recognized that there was a nail scratch on the cake cream as the pic below. At beginning I didn't think it was caused by nail until I recognized that there was no cream spit on the cake box and the girl who placed the cake in the box today has a newly made long nails. We were pretty sure that the whole thing was caused by accident but still felt uncomfortable to eat the cake. Therefore, we have to toss it. As a female, I also love long nails since they look really pretty. However, if the person's main job is to handle the food, the person should at least be careful about it or not have it if she can directly touch the food. Updated review after 3 yrs: Dublin and Pleasanton has a plethora of Asian-style bakeries: Paris Baguette, Tous Les Jours, bakeries within both 99 Ranches, 85C, and Kee Wah. Each bakery has specialty items that we enjoy, and for Kee Wah its got to be their cake service! Chinese-style birthday cakes are characterized by a light whipped cream frosting, mixed fruit garnish on top, and a soft vanilla spongy cake with some unique fillings. Some of the most popular ones are taro and sweet water chestnut (trust me - its good!). Overall these cakes are very balanced in flavor - not excessively sweet if that makes sense. My most recent order was mixed-fruit filling for a half-sheet cake for Mom-in-Law's birthday. I was surprised they accommodated a Sunday pickup from a Friday order. This monster cake serves 40, so plenty of seconds and leftovers. In hindsight a quarter sheet (20 servings) would have been fine, but seeing everyone enjoying that cake - maybe too much is better than not enough!
