Ok, so this story starts in my 20s with the release of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 (I played it on the Dreamcast, a beloved and underrated system). The game was amazing, with footage of real skateboarders doing real tricks; I was tempted to learn. Around this time I also had a friend at work who was looking to get rid of his old skateboard, so he gave it to me. Every day after work I went to the parking lot near our apartment and pushed around. I tried learning to ollie for a few weeks without much luck, and eventually my interest fizzled out. But the skateboard moved with us from home to home for over 15 years. Fast forward to the pandemic. And the Tony Hawk Remastered (video game) announcement. If there isn't time to rediscover old hobbies during a shelter-in-place, when is it ever going to happen? I dug out the skateboards again and started skating around the Arroyo School parking lot while the kids were scooting and riding their bikes. I started practicing ollies in the garage (YouTube has gotten a lot better since the last time I tried to learn). And I saw a neighborhood friend cruising by on his new longboard from Society. The kids have shown some interest as well, carefully stepping on and off of the board. On Saturday I went to the store. Masks are required in the store, and only 8 customers are allowed at a time. A customer was already at the assembly counter, so Michael listened carefully to what I was looking for and brought over a few components for me to look at. He helped me to figure out that my current board is probably too narrow and patiently laid out options for trucks, wheels, and bearings. I grabbed a new helmet and a smaller pre-assembled board for the kids as well. After I paid, Michael carefully assembled my new board. I was really happy with the friendly and knowledgable service, and everyone else in the shop was really nice as well. I'm excited to come back! I've got some discounts through the customer loyalty program to spend. Today we went to the Stanford campus to skate (both inline skates and skateboards); we were there for nearly five hours (lots of breaks and some time to eat our sandwiches). It was a joy to ride around the wide hallways with their smooth concrete floors, and I was so excited to see my daughter and her friend enjoy their first experiences skateboarding. Hoping that this time, I'm able to finish learning how to ollie. I've got YouTube...and also my kids, who are fearless on wheels and could probably learn something from seeing their dad struggle to learn something new.

My eight-year-old nephew asked for a skateboard for Christmas and I wanted to give him one that was of high quality. I did my research and decided that it's best to go to a skateboard shop (as opposed to purchasing online or at Target). I decided to check out Society and I'm glad I did. The staff were friendly, attentive, and helpful. The store is clean and well organized. Plus, the merchandise is fairly priced. My nephew wanted a board that was either all black or all white, but they didn't have either, so I opted for the closest thing possible. However, I couldn't resist adding some color when I saw the cool graphics on the grip tapes they had available. Once I had picked out what I wanted (board, grip tape, hardware, and wheels), they assembled the skateboard. They were also kind enough to find a box for me, so I could wrap it up. My nephew loves his new skateboard. Overall, I had a great experience and I would highly recommend checking out Society for your skateboard needs.

Totally smashed all expectations. Went out of their way to help me get the right wheels on these ancient quad roller skates. (Roller skate wheels and anything quad skates are all in stupid high demand rn.) The wheels are perfect for my skates. I was intent on diy the whole way and had to come back and get new bearings as the ones in these old skates were pretty well shot. After removing and cleaning the old ones and being discouraged they helped me get the bearings in properly and then even later adjusting the fit as my truck stems are a bit short. Great store with super customer service and things for the quad gang too! Thanks!

Appreciate all the help with my son! Thanks Ian!

The store has always had a solid selection, but they've made a complete 180 in terms of customer service. Upon entry, I was immediately greeted by Carlos, who had a genuinely upbeat and welcoming attitude. He asked if we needed help and, when he found out we were shopping for clothes, he casually explained a great in-store promotion on pants and shirts from specific brands. It was actually a perfect fit for what we were looking for and really helpful to know. He let us know he was around if we had any questions, without being pushy. Later, while browsing shirts in the back, I was approached by the store manager, Nat. She was incredibly friendly, fun, and easy to talk to. She helped me navigate the massive selection and pinpoint exactly the style I'd been struggling to find elsewhere. Even though the shirts I chose didn't qualify for the promotion, I still had to have them, they were exactly my son's style. As we explored more, we came across some awesome studded belts and even a classic FSAS belt buckle. I ended up spending way more than I expected -- because I genuinely wanted it all. But I also saved around $50 thanks to the in-store discounts which really made the value increase. If it weren't for Nat and Carlos' top-tier service, I probably wouldn't have found what I was looking for so easily -- and I certainly wouldn't have walked out with as much as I did. Thanks for making this store awesome again. Now all you need is the couch with the Xbox playing Tony Hawk's Pro Skater -- so the next generation can chill like we did back in 2005.

The mattress probably came with pinhole so didn't hold air in. Used up a credit so didn't keep the receipt. Always keep the receipts from this store. Andreas, a manager when I called to explain the situation said he could give me a $30 gift card. But when I got there, I waited about 45 minutes and he didn't give me a refund. He gave me a receipt at my request since I didn't want to go to that store again, saying I left both there for customer service to resolve the next day...figured he could mail me a gift card as promised. The Big 5 store where I bought it understood the situation and apologized for the way I was treated because the actual manager, Matt, hung up on me 4 times and each call was the same: he didn't listen to me and told me to call their customer service and then hung up on me. When I was told by Coleman to take a photo of the items so that they could give me the proper customer service...nobody at the store would take a photo of my items for me. But Matt didn't stay on the phone long enough to hear it. I'm now thinking that's because they tossed the items long before my month deadline expired. Coleman took care of me anyway. April 22 I brought the items to this store and Jessica in customer service told me that I had a month to resolve the issue, not necessarily pick it up as non profits have pick up schedules. Several days before the month ended, I found very appropriately, an abuse shelter who would pick up both items once they had a team member to make the 45 minute trip to do so. I notified the store and customer service before the deadline of the plan that a non profit would be picking them up so they had no right to toss my items. I let the store know on Friday 5/29 that someone was on the way from San Jose (within a week of the deadline within which the plan had to be communicated, as Jessica abruptly mandated) and gave the store the heads up. Andreas couldn't find it and after so many lies and being hung up on so many times, and Jessica not listening and talking over me when I tried to correct her with accurate info, I figured that when he said he would look for it and let me know...that I would never hear. So today, my last call with Jessica, the manager of Big 5 customer service, she defended their action to toss my items since there was a pinhole leak (which they knew from the beginning as I told them so and it was sold that way; I think it was a prior return) and reneged on her prior comment that I had to let them know within the month...not picked up within the month. So I got the expected answer from her when I asked her to send a new queen air mattress and pump to this shelter and here's their address. She verbally attacked me. Now off to call the shelter...and let them know the unconscionable ending. Before I end this you should know that I called at least 5 other Big 5 CA stores for the regional/district manager's name and contact information and none would share it...so abusive managers can get away with their behaviors and their bosses never find out. So regional managers Paul Stockdale (No. CA) and Frank Golden (So. CA), make your contact info known if customers ask so that you can get the best store managers and staff who aren't afraid of accountability, truth and good customer service.
