SoCal Eye - Love my Fashionable Eye-wear plus excellent patient service!!! - Optometrists Near Me - Long Beach, California

I've been a patient for many years, seeing most of the doctors at one time or another, in both the Long Beach and Los Alamitos office. Yesterday, it took the doctor over an hour past my appointment time to see me. She said she was on a conference call and then had a difficult patient. I was her first scheduled patient, so that doesn't make sense. This has been happening more and more. Always an apology, but not any changes to being more timely. I understand things happen sometimes, but an hour and 15 minutes past my appointment time seems unacceptable. I was there to follow up on my ocular hypertension. That wasn't even discussed. The doctor rushed through my appointment. We talked about my dry eye issue and that was it. I had questions, but she left before I could ask them. I had to ask the technician if my retinal photos were okay. She said they were, except for the cataracts. What cataracts? They were documented on my chart in 2019, and no one ever told me. Also, the staff at the front desk were making negative statements about other patients, loud enough for the waiting room to hear. That doesn't seem professional to me. I'm not coming back. I can get better, more thorough care somewhere else, I'm sure. read more

If you are in need of an ophthalmologist and reside in the Lakewood/Bellflower or neighboring/ commutable cities, my mom and I recommend. Mom had her consult and pre-op appointments prior to cataract surgery. Elizabeth, the scheduling coordinator is the kindest and super efficient from the office side. Dr. Ted Pasquali (the younger one) has an amazing bedside manner for elderly and is a great surgeon. The nurse that called us the night before surgery was a bit on the sassy side so no 5 stars for SoCalEye. Regarding follow up appointments, I had a caregiver assist and accompany my mom to her appointment. I followed up w/the technician to find out how her eye is healing. The tech was awesome and called me with an update. Eyes are great and only needs reading glasses. This Lakewood/LB location is great. There is a Starbucks a block away that is convenient to wait at while your loved one is getting a procedure. There is also a Winco Foods next door. There is usually enough disability parking as well as regular parking. I would not arrive too early for an appointment as they are busy with several patients so just be on time and wait 10-15+ until called. Do though follow all day of surgery and pre-op instructions to a t. 4 stars and a lot better than the Los Al location. read more

Let me start off by saying if you're on the fence about Lasik this is your sign to do it! I was recommended to SoCal Eye through my optometrist Dr. Takeda. First and foremost SoCal Eye offers a LIFETIME GUARANTEE. I originally visited SoCal in 2019 and opted into not getting Lasik due to the cost which is around $5000. Fast forward to 2024 and several eye infections later due to lack of upkeep with my contacts I decided to get the Lasik. I was able to finance the surgery with a simple option called CareCredit. My first appointment with their coordinator Jackie took care of all of my nerves about the I had regarding the procedure. Jackie texted me every step of the way ensuring that if I had any questions or any issues issues with how to do the CareCredit it was resolved prior to my surgery time. About one week from my initial appointment I was in the operating room ready to get Lasik and was amazed at how quickly the procedure was. I believe my preop lasted longer than the actual surgery the surgery lasted six minutes!!! I write this review one week from having Lasik and I have absolutely no pain or sensitivities to light. I have been SoCalEye patient for more than 10 years. I always appreciate the professional and caring front desk staff, nurses and the eye doctors. Last month, I had 2 appointments (1 for testing and 1 for doctor exam). I called and rescheduled the testing but forgot about the exam. My testing is coming next week, but suddenly received a no show fee for $50 doctor exam. I called to billing and explained the situation (have not got my testing yet), but the billing staff said I already signed a "no show" agreement in 2023, and the clinic is not responsible for sending reminder nor waive my no-show fee. I was in desperate need of cataract surgery. My first consultation was great. You are seen pretty quickly. The doctors are quite professional. After my exam, I had tests done to determine what I needed for my replacement lens. I had surgery on my left eye and it went beautifully. It was done at UCI Medical in Los Alamitos. I would give them five stars also. My follow up was great and the next surgery was scheduled. Everything went great and I no longer wear glasses. From being nearly blind to being able to see everything so clearly and oh my goodness seeing colors was like a miracle. If you're hesitating to get it done, please don't. I heard good things about ophthalmology but I haven't experienced it myself. What I have experienced was optometry. It has been good until it wasn't. I'm not complaining about the service (with Dr. Kwak), but more on how they did billing and collecting. I was a patient there for several years using VSP insurance and there was no issue until my work changed my vision insurance to MetLife Superior Vision which SoCal Eye is also a network provider. First, they had a hard time finding my insurance, then they asked for my "medical" insurance which is Anthem Blue Cross. Then, they decided to use my "medical" insurance to bill instead of my vision insurance. They called it EyeMed. I never intended for them to use my medical insurance for eye exam. I only gave them the info because they said my new vision insurance doesn't cover certain procedure and my medical insurance may. They ended up billing just my medical insurance for everything. They charged me a couple of hundred dollars as they said my insurance was not good enough which I realized later that they billed the wrong insurance. My actual "vision" insurance should cover it but they didn't bill. Later, they found my vision insurance and billed my vision insurance for my contact lens supplies but they made a billing error. They only billed as regular contacts instead of "medically necessary" contacts (because of my strong Rx) so my insurance only covered a small portion of it. And of course, they billed the rest to me. I called my insurance and my insurance said they should re-bill the contacts as "medically necessary" and my insurance would pay for the corrected claim. I don't know what they did but I found later in my MetLife portal that they didn't re-bill my insurance. I learned later that instead of fixing the problem, they decided not to take MetLife Superior Vision ever again for supplies like contacts or glasses. So, I stopped going there since last year. But I still send my son to get eye exam there. My son had eye exam for contact lens for the first time last year so they charged us $135 just for the doctor to show my son how to put on contact lens. We were not thrilled about it but just let it go since it was his first time. This year, they said they would charge my son $135 again for contact lens fitting (of course, service that is NOT covered by insurance because it is NOT medically necessary). They forced all patients to have this fitting. So, we decided to cancel my son's appointment this year and found another decent eye doctor that we are happy with. We never want to return to SoCal Eye Optometry because of this administrative disturbance. read more

My husband and I went to have our eyes examined for the first time at this practice. We are beyond pleased with our visit. The front office staff was very nice and efficient. We were both examined by Chelsey Honma, OD. I can't say enough good things about her. She was very professional but also very personable. The examination was routine, but she explained a lot more than I have ever been told before. As my husband and I are in our late 60s, eye sight is yet another function that is deteriorating. I now understand why and the best way to handle it. We will be going back soon to get new glasses, I have no doubt this dept will be as effortless as the others. Edit - we went beck several days later to order new glasses. Lily, the optician, was wonderful. My vision is a little complicated and we have two insurance policies. After battling a very bad eye infection and going to a Opthamoligist that didnt listen or give me any answers and instead sent me to the ER for a 10 hour visit amongest many sick covid patients, still providing me with no answers. I was happy to find this office and talk to a doctor that really took the time to listen and gave me answers to why I had the infection and what I could do to make it better. I appreciated the kindness of the office staff and the willingness to get me an appt right away. I woud definetly refer this office to others and will be back. read more

I made an appointment for my husband specifically for an eyeglass exam. He wears glasses and needs a new prescription. I made this appointment well over 2 months in advance since they said that the only appointment available was in June. Okay, we came in and it turns out it wasn't the right department but it was for ophthalmologist. We didn't ask for this department, we specifically asked optometry or someone who can assist with eyewear, NOT for glaucoma screening. We waited 2 months for the wrong department. Now my husband doesn't have a new prescription for eyewear and the receptionists weren't sympathetic at all. read more

Understanding that required temperature checks are enforced, I've requested that the temperature be taken on the wrist vs the head due to personal preference. This place will add a contact-fitting onto your visit without telling you they're charging you for it until after. I paid an additional $90. I've been wearing contacts for 9 years and using the same brand for 2. I DO NOT need a fitting. They also will lie to you and tell you that your insurance doesn't cover eyeglass lenses, when in reality it just doesn't cover THEIR lenses. They did this to me in the past when I could have gone elsewhere. The "Eyeglass Rule" law that was passed now requires optometrists to give you your eyeglass prescription so they can't force you to purchase their products. If not for this law and me getting more informed on what my insurance covers independently, I might have been manipulated into purchasing more of their glasses. I was already tricked into a fee. I would advise going elsewhere. read more

The professionals at this business are great! I felt at ease talking and laughing while the doctor did the necessary diagnostics. They were completed and I picked out which glasses frames I wanted. I was told the glasses should be ready in 2-3 weeks. There was no sort of pushing me to buy a more expensive type of frame, but she kept the frames within my budget. I have been to the Lakewood facility several times, I had cataract surgery with Dr. Ted Pasquali the beginning of the year and always had a good experience with friendly staff and doctor and got in and out in a timely manner. Yesterday my follow up appt. was at 1:40 pm and I didn't get put back into a room until 3:10 pm, the staff member that took me back apologized for the long wait so I accepted that and stayed patient. I had my Lasik surgery done here and had a great experience. Everyone in the office was friendly and I was thoroughly checked to see if I was a good candidate. I appreciate the time that was taken for my pre-op to ensure that I understood the procedure and know what to expect after the surgery. This is the MOST NEGLECTFUL AND INCOMPETENT OFFICE!!!! My 80 year father had the most abysmal encounter with staff members and Dr. Jastad. DO, 1/29/2020, he came in for an office visit; Staff contacted me at 2:16pm to inform me that he needed to have URGENT surgery at 7am due to his eye being open and Authorization was needed immediately. At 5:17pm Dr. Jarstad reaches out to me to explain auth was not approved yet and his surgery would be moved to 11am instead of 7am. 1/30/2020 at 9/29/2020 auth was approved office staff indicated needed to go to surgical center prior to 10:30am.. We arrived and checked in on TIME.. At 10:38am staff informed us that surgery has to be cancelled because Dr. Jarstad had office patients to see.. We were giving NO RECOURSE for how move forward.. We had to go to EMERGENCY room to have URGENT procedure completed to save his vision. Mind you he fasted for OVER 24hrs. This is the MOST NEGLECTFUL AND INCOMPETENT OFFICE!!!! read more

I came to SoCal to make an appointment today because it is so difficult to make the appointment by phone. They keep in putting me on hold for a long time. I thought that if i came in person to do the appointment it will be easier and faster. I was wrong. The receptionist told me that I have to wait. When i asked her for how long, she sarcastically told me that she is alone and it will take 20 to 30 minutes to get me an appointment. I told her that i will just do the appointment by phone, at least if I'm on hold, I am in the comfort of my house. If making an in person appointment will take 30 minutes, I cannot imagine how long is the wait to actually see the doctor on your appointment date. My Ophthalmologist is good but I'm seriously considering changing. read more
