I just had my one-year-after appointment to check out the results of cataract surgery/light adjustable lens op. Perfect vision! I went for the first time July 8 2025 for a long overdue eye examination. SoCal Eye I learned, is now part of UCI, which is not good at all! However, I was willing to put that aside for now. The staff is really nice including the technicians. They force you to see an ophthalmologist though! I do not like ophthalmologists and have seen 6 of them, all male over the years. I cannot be dilated due to my angles. Most of the ophthalmologists refuse to measure my eye pressure because the way they do it is invasive and barbaric and I refuse to go through that. Two, including the one I saw at So Cal Eye use a handheld device, which is perfectly fine with me. I also do not mind the air puff thing. The Ophthalmologist I saw at So Cal Eye had a better demeanor than all previous ones I saw at other places. She also understood that I cannot be dilated and why straight away. (I had a few that claimed to be able to fix it if anything went wrong, which is total BS). However, I ran into the same problem as with all others. There was a point when she sprung a surprise and said she is going to numb my eyes! My defenses snapped on so fast my own head swam! To date, not a single ophthalmologist including the one here would tell me why they wanted to numb my eyes!! I still do not know. Fortunately, I learned about those numbing drops (even though I have never had it done). I'll put it this way: Getting pepper sprayed is not as bad! The numbing drops burn and hurt like crazy judging from those who have had it. After about 3 minutes of arguing she finally admitted that yes, they do burn, but added "only for a minute or so". A minute IS a lifetime under such a condition!!! The point is that she was not going to warn me of that! She still never told me why she wanted to numb my eyes! As has happened before, they end the exam there. Any further exam was cancelled. At SoCal Eye after you see the ophthalmologist you go back and see the optometrist. The one I saw was good. While I need to see ophthalmologists at this point in life, I will never see one again. I'm done. It is not about not hearing what I want or hearing what I do not like. It is about the dishonesty and potential harm. If SoCal Eye would divorce themselves from UCI, I may go back next year provided I do not have to see an ophthalmologist and can just see an optometrist. read more

The wait in this office was very long. I arrived 15 minutes prior to my appointment which I was instructed to do by the appointment maker when I initially called the office. I sat in the reception area for 1.5 hours before my name was called. This by far was the worst part of the office visit. If staff would have mentioned up front about the wait at least my expectations would have been realistic. The rest of the experience was fantastic. The staff members were pleasant and Dr. Nhu was very thorough. I went through several tests I have not had before. I would definitely recommend this practice, but keep in mind the wait in the lobby could be lengthy. read more

My father has been seeing Dr Carl Hartman for many years, for eye issues related to aging. He has received nothing but kind, compassionate and highly competent care! We were sorry when his eye issues required someone more specialized in corneal care, that we would not be seeing Dr. Carl anymore . Dr. Carl Hartman referred him to another doctor in the practice, Dr. Emile SharifI. Dr. Sharifi has shown himself to be a highly qualified surgeon and a compassionate physician. We could not be happier with the outcome of a complex surgery and the resultant restoration of vision to my 95 year old father. We are so grateful to both these wonderful physicians! I have been to many ophthalmologists and Dr Nhu is by far the best. She is very thorough and complete in her examinations. I would give her more than five stars if i could. The whole staff is fantastic! I was referred to Dr Nhu by another specialist as he feared a medication I was taking could damage my retinas. He told me Dr Nhu was the best Ophthalmologist in southern Ca and he had his receptionist make the appointment. I went begrudgingly, but i am so glad i did. Dr Nhu kept testing and when she thought she found a 'little something' did more testing. When further testing found 'a little something more' she referred me to a retinal specialist, and indeed, i did have problem. I am convinced my old opthalmologists would have missed this and it is only through the diligence of doctor Nhu that my condition was found early. Thank heavens for Dr Nhu!! read more

Worst timing ever. Found them on yelp. Waited 1.5+ hours to be seen. You really shouldn't pack that many people in a small amount of time if you're going to run that late. Appt 3:50 and it's now 5:30 and we're still waiting. Apparently I wasn't suppose to have plans in a 2 hour period. There's an expectancy for us to be on time yet they don't provide any insight that the wait would be this long. When I asked if they always run this late, one of the techs said, it can. I would never go back to a dr office that doesn't consider time as a courtesy to their patients. read more

I am not a new patient at SoCal Eye. I saw Dr Carl Hartman for an annual exam in February and he mentioned I would benefit with cataract surgery. Briefly told me about the surgery and choices I had. Said to go home and think about it and give a call back if I was interest. I did some research and was sold. Called back a few days later and set things up. Next appointment he went over things in great detail and answered all me questions. Had some extra tests done. He went over the different lens. The best choice of my life. He and his team is amazing. Procedure was more simple than he explained. No issues and I can read with out glasses, sometimes using readers depend on print and lighting. The best is that I can drive at night after over 2 years of just not feeling comfortable. I think, actually, he is more excited that I am!!! And I am thrilled. All his staff is as upbeat as he is. Was seen at the Los Alamitos office yesterday for a complete eye exam. The office and waiting room was clean and well maintained and adhered to Covid protocol. The technician who started my exam, named Cassidy, was friendly and professional. I saw Dr T Nhu and she was terrific. Explained all that she found on the exam and brought up pictures and test results and took her time talking to me and that was greatly appreciated. I am writing this review WITHOUT the use of contacts or eyeglasses, Day 1 after LASIK surgery with Dr. Pasquali yesterday. THIS IS AWESOME!!! I had been thinking about LASIK surgery for a while, and finally decided to look into it. I asked my optometrist for referrals, and he recommended Dr. Pasquali at SoCal Eye. I was being diligent and decided to do a few consults, but elected SoCal Eye because of the staff professionalism and referral from my eye doctor's office of over 20 years (shout out to Ikeda Optometry in Buena Park!). Receptionist was very nice, but lobby was a bit small. It was never crowded when I came in and I was always easily able to find a seat, so no problem for me. Angel is the LASIK coordinator, and she began by taking scans of my eyes. She discussed the process at length, and was so easy to talk to. She has a wonderful personality, and you can easily tell she is passionate about her job. We talked at length, and she mentioned she has been working in this field for over 20 years. Had a corporate job, but this has been so much more fulfilling because she enjoys working with the eye doctors here. That alone made me feel more confident in the doctors. I was then introduced to Dr. Ted Pasquali, who analyzed the eye scans Angel just obtained, and explained the process in further detail. The two options were LASIK vs PRK. No difference in price, but a difference in procedure. Because I was an avid contact lens wearer (every single day!), it changes the shape of the cornea. When I initially spoke to Angel to schedule my consult, she instructed me not to wear contacts for at least 3 days before the appointment. Dr. Pasquali was leaning towards PRK (longer recovery by a few days), but asked me to continue wearing glasses only until my pre-op visit the following week (last Tuesday) to see if my cornea shape changes any more without the use of contacts. The scans on pre op day would help him make the final determination whether I would be eligible for LASIK (my preferred procedure due to recovery time) or if we move forward with PRK. Cut to last Tuesday, and Angel took more scans of my eyeballs. Both eyes were dilated by Dr. Bovi. Dr. Bovi double and triple checked my eyes to ensure the correct prescription for the upcoming procedure (think: "1 or 2 better? 3 or 4 better?"). Since Dr. Pasquali was at the other office location in Lakewood, Angel informed me he would look at my scans and get back to her with the final decision of LASIK vs PRK. Within an hour of returning home, Angel promptly called me back with the great news that Dr. Pasquali recommended LASIK. On surgery day, I came to the office with my consents signed and paid for the procedure. Angel walked me through the back and went over pre and post op instructions once more. Shortly after, Dom the surgery tech introduced himself and explained the next steps. After, he walked me to the procedure room, where Dr. Pasquali and another surgery tech were waiting for me. I laid on the bed, and they explained the process. Then proceeded to put multiple eye drops in, used a machine to suction my eyeball to and cut the flap open, then my motorized bed swiveled to the other side of the room where the laser corrected my vision. Right eye done in 9 seconds! Swiveled back to the other side of the room, where the machine suctioned my left eye and created a flap, swiveled back to the other side of the room where the laser corrected my vision. Left eye done in 8 seconds! I'm not sure how else I could describe it, but I don't think anyone could have prepared me for that procedure. It was a weird feeling on my eyes and what I was looking at the entire time! Tons of eye drops instilled during the whole process. When all was said and done, it was 20 minutes in the procedure room. I was given these *elegant* goggles to be worn for the first 4 hours, then for sleep for the next week. My eyes definitely stung and were watering like a waterfall until i got home. I got Ativan pre procedure for this reason. Taking the nap helped me get past the discomfort, which was completely normal and expected. Once I woke up from my nap, the discomfort subsided. I felt like my eyes were dry, but used my eye drops as instructed and felt relief. I took another nap and when I woke up, I felt like i woke up with brand new eyes! It is so crazy how quickly our eyes heal. At my follow up today, Dr. Pasquali said I now have 20/15 vision in both eyes!!! When assessing my eyes, he said, "Did we even do surgery yesterday? I have to look very hard to see any incision!" No gritty or scratchy feeling, just mild dry eyes, which is a very natural and common side effect after any eye surgery. The artificial tears are so helpful in lubrication. I am so glad I put my trust in Dr. Pasquali and the amazing staff at SoCal Eye. With all four of my visits (consult, pre op, surgery, and post op visit), I was treated with excellence from start to finish! read more

Expensive, slow, terrible customer service. I went there for an eye exam in early 2022, and then switched jobs so it took a while for my new benefits to kick in. After multiple attempts to get glasses with my new prescription, and all of them giving me headaches and being obviously unusable, I called to set up an appointment to have my prescription verified. Turns out you can only do that within the first 60 days after an exam, which they did not tell me when setting up my appointment. They did not tell me that when I arrived for my appointment. After waiting for the better part of an hour, I asked at the desk when I would be seen, and that's when they told me that I didn't have an appointment with an eye doctor, but rather just with their optical department to have my glasses checked (to see if they matched the prescription, I assume). Which I had already done, weeks before. When I told them this, they informed me that they wouldn't do anything with the prescription, but if I asked really nicely and was willing to rearrange my schedule and pay out of pocket (since I've already used up my exam for the year), I could get another eye exam at their other office. Right about then it occurred to me that there was absolutely no reason why I would choose this business that has given me an apparently inaccurate prescription, wasted my time when I tried to follow up on it, and has kept me waiting every time I've been dumb enough to make an appointment there. Also, probably worth noting that you pay for parking, the office itself is dingy and dark with terrible ventilation (they have multiple fans around the waiting area but none of them are turned on), and everyone who I saw there had been waiting an extended period of time. read more

This rating is for SOCALEYE in Los Alamitos Ca., and for Dr Trinh Nhu and her Staff! If I could give her/them 100 stars I would, and A+++ that wouldn't come close to the gratitude I feel for Dr Nhu and this eye clinic! Prior to finding Dr Nhu I was rapidly losing my sight, and was fearing that I was going blind! After searching many facilities and reading what they offered, I chose Dr Nhu based on many reviews, and based on her impressive Resume! Dr Nhu and her staff were welcoming and attentive, and from start to finish assured me I was in good hands. Dr Nhu explained the process, gave me her diagnosis and my best options. Dr Nhu explained that I was legally blind due to thick Cataracts, but further explained she thought she could help me, then gave me my surgical options. I agreed with her surgical and post op treatment plan at which time I felt very comfortable in agreeing to proceed! Dr Nhu did the Surgery in August of 2022, and began the post surgery treatments thereafter. From start to finish I never felt any pain, and after the surgery and treatments I am seeing better then I could ever have Imagined. Colors are vivid again and I can now drive at night again. Dr Nhu is a skilled surgeon and wonderful Doctor who made me feel safe during the entire process. My vision was 20/400 pre surgery, and now my vision has been restored to 20/25! My eye was tearing constantly and I was concerned. At the time I did not have an Optometrist but I needed help. I sought out an optometrist in the area and she referred me to SoCal Eye as she knew I needed to be seen soon and wasn't sure if her schedule could accommodate me right away. I called SoCal Eye and they made me an appt for the next morning! They worked around my schedule to get me in. The staff was great and the doctor-Dr. Nuu was phenomenal. They took X-rays of my eye and examined me thoroughly. After the exam, the doctor evaluated things and gave me a prescription. Within hours I was feeling better. UPDATE--I just received a call from Angelina McClain at So Cal Eye apologizing for the behavior I received from Taryn. She did ask me to take my review down but I told her that people need to know how Taryn treats people but that I am thankful that she called and heard my story it gives me faith that someone actually cares how people are treated. She did inform me that Taryn is at their Long Beach office and not even at the office I use ( not sure how I was even connected with this gestapo). Angelina gave me her private number to call in the future. Good job Angelina I so appreciate your concern. I give you a 5 STAR Again I want to say that Dr Clay and Dr Nhu are amazing doctors!!!! I give them a 5 STAR MY STORY-- if I could give Taryn a STAR I would give her a BIG 0 I tore my retina in 2018 and the retina specialist has told me to get a Vision Field test done every year. This year I had some things where I had lost my sight for a few seconds and saw the retina specialist and he told me I need to get that test done as soon as possible Fast forward to my phone call to So Cal Eye who by the way Dr Clay is my ophthalmologist and an extremely good one. The problem was getting in to see her. The front office told me I needed a referral which I got from my primary dr. The problem started when they transferred me to a girl or should I say gestapo by the name of Taryn. She refused to give me an appt saying a need a referral from a real dr. This went on for 4 days. She said she needed paperwork from the retina specialist. I called the retina specialist office and they faxed the paperwork over right away With continual harassment from gestapo Taryn I finally asked her...what exactly what do you need? She said a referral and paperwork from the retina specialist. I said...you already have it. She said .. it's not enough, it doesn't look like he wants you to have the test done before my regular yearly exam. I told her...why don't you call them? She informed me that was my job. I asked her what am I supposed to ask him for she said a report. I called the specialist and told them the entire story. They told me to forget about getting the test done with So Cal Eye and that they would do it in their Long Beach Office. THANK GOODNESS I don't have to deal with Taryn again This has been such a horrible experience that I'm not sure I will ever go back to this office. AGAIN I want to say Dr Clay and Dr Nu are the best!!! Just can't handle someone as mean and condescending as Taryn. I have no idea what her position is but hope no one ever has to deal with this gestapo. Oh..... and the cherry on the top to top off this whole experience was I got a call today from So Cal Eye to make an appointment to have the test done. I visited SoCal Eye for the first time and was very impressed with the staff and Dr. Clay. I had a full eye exam and it was determined I qualify for cataract surgery in both eyes. Dr. Clay explained the procedure and types of lens plus cost if opting for premium. She also found a slight right eye problem that requires a Retina specialist. This was the impressive part that not only was I referred but staff called the specialist office and got an appointment within the next week. The young staffer (I forgot her name) had to stay on the line a while to arrange it but didn't just tell me to handle from home. I've heard nothing but positive from friends who have had cataract surgery with the doctors at SoCal Eye and feel very confident that all will go well. read more

I've always had a good experience at this facility, nice office and wonderful doctors. However, I called yesterday 4/6/2022 to see if I could see my doctor for an eye infection that I've come down with. I was told that I couldn't see her until June 30th. I explained that I couldn't wait that long with an eye infection, and was there another doctor who could see me. I was told that I could see another doctor on May 13th. That's still too long to wait with an infection. I'll be going elsewhere from now on. read more

Dr. Hartman suggested I get laser surgery, sooner rather than later. Dr. Pasquali performed the laser procedure on the my right eye six days ago, MIRACLE! When I walked to my car after the procedure I could not believe the visual clarity and the vibrant colors I saw. It was like I had been blind but then I could see. Our family has been coming to see Dr. Nhu since the kids were small. They're both in high school now and we wouldn't trust any other clinic for our eye needs, even driving 45 minutes each way without hesitation. Dr. Nhu is very thorough with her exams and takes time to explain her findings in detail and answer our questions. She's always spot on with her recommendations as well, especially when it comes to my elderly mother. She's had cataract surgery with Dr. Nhu and is ecstatic with her results.
