This doctor told me that my floaters would disappear when I was around 65. I was pretty sure at the time it was not true. He also did cataract surgery on me after touting accommodating lenses. Today my mom had her left eye, her only working eye, done by Dr Hartman. What an unforgettable experience. He asked me to sit in on her cataract surgery as a translator. He walked me through every step of the surgery. I didn't feel like I was talking to a dr but more like an uncle. He made a very intricate and delicate procedure seem as easy as riding a bike. My mother kept raving on how relax she felt. I'm sure the drugs had something to do with it a bit, lol. She compared her surgery with Dr. Hartman to her previous experience with her right eye. She is now completely blind in her right eye. She regrets having met Dr Hartman a bit too late. She brags about not feeling a thing. Again probably due to the drugs. But you know what they say about drugged people - they typically tell how they truly feel. She was very happy she did the surgery. She came home recommending him to all her old lady friends. To leave their drs and go to him because he was very good. The staff was absolutely amazing. The equipment was modern. The whole experience was a walk in the park. I was referred to him by my primary care doctor for a second opinion regarding eye surgery that was being recommended by another Dr. and I was anxious about. I woke up with a horrible, scratching pain in my eye and tried flushing it out myself but nothing seemed to work. My husband and I found Dr. Carl Hartman in Los Alamitos and was quickly seen by him. He gave me an eye exam and found what was irritating my eye. He removed it quickly and painlessly. I'm horrible with things near my eyes but he made me feel very comfortable. My family and I have been seeing Dr. Carl Hartman for over 2 decades. His father started the practice in Lakewood many years ago and they are really well known in the Long Beach community. That's how we first found them. It is definitely a busy practice, but most of the time we get called within about 15 minutes of our appointment time. I've been there a couple of times where they've had an emergency and the wait has been a little longer, but when it's our turn, we are never rushed, all of our issues are addressed and we leave knowing that we're receiving really excellent and thorough care. I was prompted to write a review on Yelp because of what I consider to be a really over-the-top response to what I perceived to be an emergency. I was working in my shop and a piece of metal went into my eye. It was a Sunday and I called Dr. Hartman's office. The answering service paged him and he called me back within 5 minutes. He then came into the office, removed the piece of metal (scary, but surprisingly easy!) and saw me the next day. I don't know if it's normal, but my eye was basically back to normal the next day. As an aside, over the years I've also seen his dad, who is equally kind and personable. I just heard that one of their partners, Dr. Pasquali, also had his son just join the practice. In todays world it's pretty cool to see 2 father-son teams in the same office. Most of the staff has been with them since we've been going. They really go out of their way to be nice. If you're looking for a truly professional, top notch place to get your eyes taken care of, this is the place. You won't be in and out in 20 minutes, but you'll get everything you want to take care of your eyes. Great care and good people! read more

My family and I have had and continue to have a wonderful experience with Dr. Carl Hartman. It all comes down to how caring, thoughtful, and genuine he is. I have trusted him and his father with my parents care and recommend their practice to all of my friends. We are always greeted warmly when we check in. The staff is really helpful about taking care of authorizations and figuring out all of the annoying insurance issues for us so we dont have to hassle with that. The technicians and optometrists who get you ready are kind and proficient. And then you get to see Dr. Carl. He has a great sense of humor and always makes my mother laugh. He takes time to listen to her eye problems and carefully address each one. He always leaves us reassured and knowing that we have gotten expert care. I wanted to write this review because recently I took a friend in for LASIK surgery. My friend had worn thick glasses for many years. After a thorough evaluation, Dr. Carl told him that he was a good candidate for LASIK. I drove him to the appointment and was amazed by how smooth and quick his surgery was. I was able to watch the surgery and it was incredible and elegant. By the next day my friend was seeing better than 20/20 and just so so happy. This is just another example of many of the stellar care I have seen patients get with Dr. Carl and his group. If your insurance does not include his group, change insurances. I still consider Dr. Hartman an exceptional opthamoligist but recently had a very unfortunate experience with one of his staff. Five days after having an appointment with Dr. Hartman I called the office with a "follow up" question, my call was returned by his assistant, she would not listen to my question and insisted on talking over me, after trying to explain my question multiple times I gave up and told her I couldn't talk to someone who wouldn't listen and kept Talking over me. read more

Recently, i had cataract surgery on both of my eyes. one by one. Everything before, during, and after the two surgeries went so smooth... My vision on my good eye improved from 20/60 to 20/20, and on my lazy eye, from 20/200, to 20/60!!! The reason for my respect to Dr. Hartman is because, in contrary to other doctors, he did not push me to do the surgery immediately. I love Dr. Carl and his staff! I had PRK surgery on both eyes in 2006, and went back for an enhancement in 2013. Dr. Carl walked me through every step of the way, explaining the process and what to expect. He even played music he knew I liked during the surgery! Everything from the appointment setting, to the initial consultation, to the follow up visits were smooth, timely, and wonderful. When I went back for the enhancement, Dr. Carl recommended that we try monovision (one eye set for distance and the other set for close). All of my 40+ friends sit around with their reading glasses and I can see close up and distance with no problems (and no glasses)!! It's a big deal to put the trust of my vision in someone else's hands, and there was never a moment where I doubted, or was nervous, about Dr. Carl. Earlier this year, my mom went to Dr. Carl for cataract surgery, at the recommendation of her regular Optometrist. I was really excited to hear that she would be going to my doctor. Visited their Lakewood/Long Beach location. My mother got a referral from her primary doctor to come see Dr. Hartman for her eyes. I try to accompany my mom to some of her medical appointments as she is getting a little older. First of all, the front desk and medical assistance were fantastic. Sometimes you get a good doctor but a bad front desk, or a good front desk and a bad doctor, here you got the best of both worlds. Dr. Hartmans' bed side manner is absolutely great. Listened to my mom and everything she had to say, even though she can get carried away with some of her explanations, and really took his time to explain his findings and recommendations. In my experience, good doctors and a good staff is hard to find, so don't hesitate in making an appointment if you're looking for a good ophthalmologist. Really glad my mother was referred here. We will definitely be booking follow up visits and preventative care for her eyes at this office. I cannot express how wonderful Dr. Hartman and his staff have been! Dr Hartman performed my moms cataract surgery and the experience was wonderful. Beggining with the Office staff who were welcoming and helpful to the nurses who answered all of my questions. Then we met Dr Hartman who took his time explaining the procedure and reassuring my mom because she was very nervous. The day of the procedure again the staff was thoughtful, kind and patient with my mom. the procedure went smoothly and my moms recovery was painless.
