Our eye surgeons treat many eye diseases and conditions, but we specialize in cataract and clear lens extraction with implantation of Advanced-Technology intraocular lenses (IOLs), including Toric, Trifocal, and Extended-Depth of Focus IOLs. With these premium IOLs, we are able to greatly reduce, and even eliminate the need for glasses for most patients.
Our surgeons also perform LASIK to treat nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.
Additionally, we specialize in functional and cosmetic eyelid surgery, as our primary surgeon, H. Dieter Hertzog, MD, performed a 2-year fellowship at Doheny-UCLA in oculoplastics.
We manage patients with glaucoma, dry eye syndrome, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and many other diseases.
We prescribe glasses (including prism to correct double vision) and most types of contact lenses.
We also have a full-service Optical Shop for all your glasses needs. Our in-house lab allows us to make most glasses on the premises. If you have a current contact lens prescription, we can order your supply.

Hertzog Eye Care has served the Long Beach, OC, and LA communities for the past 96 years. Established in 1927 by Francis "Fritz" Hertzog, MD, the practice has operated continuously through 4 generations of eye surgeons. Francis Hertzog, MD; Red Hertzog, MD; Leif M. Hertzog, MD; and H. Dieter Hertzog, MD have led the practice over the past 96 years, delivering ethical, world-class medical and surgical eye care.
Dr. H. Dieter Hertzog, MD is the current owner and operator of the practice.
Dr. Darcy C. Ryan, OD is an optometrist who has been improving Hertzog Eye Care's patients' vision since 2000. He is honored to be part of the Hertzog Eye Care family.
Meet the Business Owner: H. Dieter H.
H. Dieter Hertzog, M.D. is a fourth-generation eye surgeon who has performed over 25,000 cataract, refractive, and eyelid surgeries. He attended Harvard University where he majored in Biochemistry. He earned his MD from Loma Linda and completed residency and fellowship training at USC and UCLA, respectively. He specializes in the most modern techniques of cataract surgery and intraocular lens implantation. His particular emphasis is on Advanced Technology intraocular lens implants that help to reduce, and sometimes eliminate, a person's dependency on glasses. He is adept in the implantation of Toric, Trifocal, and Extended-Depth of Focus IOLs during cataract surgery and clear lens extraction.
He is well-trained in all types of laser surgery for the eye, including LASIK for nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. He also performs functional and cosmetic eyelid surgeries, including ptosis repair, ectropion/entropion repair, and upper and lower blepharoplasty.
