Cauliflower was very good, too much sauce though. Complimentary popcorn had a unique flavor, would have been more satisfying if served warm. Chicken curry dish was as expected, nothing special. Overall just an average experience. My entire family got the sense that this place just tries to be a little too fancy. The food is good but could be stripped down to the basics and be so much better and better priced in my opinion. We split the fried cheesesteak egg roll appetizer which came with 6 sliced wedges. These were my favorite part of the meal. The aioli sauce was a great complement to the fried goodness. I got the duck fried rice which was pretty good but a little bland. Wife got spinach artichoke dip appetizer. Parents split a salad and a burger. My daughter had a side of Mac and cheese. The service is OUTSTANDING! Friendly, helpful with menu items (I am GF, DF, no beef or pork) and attentive. We frequent this restaurant a lot before shows at the Orpheum theater but today I had the best pancakes I've ever eaten in my life. The peaches and cream pancakes are absolutely a must have!! Pastry cream in between fluffy crispy-edged pancakes with maple soaked peaches with a hint of cinnamon! All of our food was fantastic. Having seen this place on the Food Network, I wanted to try it. So I made a reservation the last time I was back home. We started off with orders of fried pickles and crispy oysters, and we enjoyed their complementary popcorn. I got the south of Beale burger for my entrée and shared it with my sister while also splitting the duck fried rice, which was featured on the Food Network show. The burger was actually quite good and nicely seasoned as were their house french fries. But, that duck fried rice was much too salty, making it tough to enjoy. The chicken and waffle sliders went over well, as did the duck omelette, crab cakes, pineapple sweet chili chicken wings, and caramel apple waffle. Our group of six arrived just as they opened on a Sunday after church. It was fairly quiet during the time that we were there and given the limited patrons, we got very attentive service. Reviews around the table were that the food was good but it probably wasn't enough of a draw for any of us to rush back. South of Beale is a great establishment to have a good meal when visiting downtown Memphis, especially if staying in the area. It is a walkable venue that is close to all the downtown sights. It's a very laid back restaurant but also simple but nice decor with an outdoor patio. The menu is small and simple but not at all basic. We sat at the bar and enjoyed our service a lot. The bartenders did a great job of filling my beer glass and making me happy. The Eggrolls were the star of the night and that was the one thing I was most worried about. Fried crunchy outside, soft and tasty inside, oh they were really good. I would order these every single time if I return. In fact, I can't stop thinking about them now... My pork chop and mac & cheese was pathetic. It looked nothing like some of the pictures, but then it did look like some of the others. Look at the difference in the pics posted! It was maybe a 6 oz boneless pork chop and some bad Mac and cheese. It appeared and tasted pan seared and nothing near worth the $18 price tag. Mac and cheese had a very thin sauce, I detected zero Gouda. It was mediocre at best. I could have bought the same meal at Kroger with a pack of boneless chops and a box of Kraft Deluxe Mac & Cheese for about $9-$10 and fed my entire family of six! Mine may even taste better than what I had. I was totally disappointed and felt kind of ripped off. I am usually tolerant of this type of price gouging if it tastes good. The appetizer of cauliflower and tomatoes was a delight. Our friend who came with us loved the cauliflower the best. The atmosphere was clean and calm. Great place to eat! There is nice outdoor seating so you can people watch as you eat. The servers are very knowledgeable about every dish and there are plenty of vegetarian and pescatarian options. The drinks are really yummy! I ordered the Darling You are Sweet while my sister ordered Whirly Bird. We were a little thrown off by the egg in Whitley Bird but it turned out to be a really yummy cocktail almost tasting like a boozy lemonade. This was the only place we found open within walking distance from where we are staying, as we arrived kinda late in town. Let me just say, IT DID NOT DISAPPOINT!! The vibe of the place was perfect and the food delicious. However, it was Virgil that made this place so inviting. He greeted us at the door, although he was not the host/hostess. His smile lit the place up but his personality was even brighter. He wasn't our server either, yet he continued to check in with us throughout our visit. The food: I had the chickpea burger and it was tasty without being over-the-top filling. My husband has the burger and said it was good. Virgil brought us a bread pudding that was delicious, I'd put it up against any bread pudding that we have back home in New Orleans. Wowowowow! This place blew me away! I was recommended to come here because of the mac n cheese, and like, holy crap, please for the love of food TRY THE MAC N CHEESE!!! It was creamy, piping hot, a little bacon-y, and with just enough crumbles on top to give it a varied texture. Oh. Man. Phew. Still dreaming about it. In other news, I ordered the shrimp and grits and my husband got the fish n chips. Both were en pointe. The shrimp n grits were super flavorful, and it was a large portion which isn't always the case with that dish. My husband loved his, too, even though the fries had their special seasoning on them (which I think includes sugar?) and I wasn't too fond of them. But to each their own! I love that they give the popcorn as an appetizer, for free. It was so tasty and unique, with a good amount of sweetness and saltiness. Also, all their beers on tap are local, which I love to see. The popcorn went really well with the lucid dreams cocktail I ordered.the menu has something for everyone and is coded for dietary needs. I got the general tso's cauliflower. Ok, definitely did not think SOB stood for south of Beale lol We came here for lunch before seeing a show at Orpheus and really enjoyed the sleek and open interior. The popcorn they give you as a starter is the perfect combination of sweet cinnamon and salty popcorn. I ordered the housemate vegan burger with ground mushroom and walnuts, it didn't taste strongly like either and had a great texture and was well seasoned but a little bit dry. They gave a healthy portion of fries which were also well seasoned and good. The drink list had some good options, since it was late lunch I opted for one of the local IPAs since I love to try local options when I'm traveling. Our server was prompt, pleasant and professional and made sure we were all well taken care of. Would definitely return if I stop by Memphis again. read more

South of Beale is a nice-ish gastro-pub style restaurant any easy-ish walk from the center of Memphis heading, well, south of Beale Street. They've got a number of small plates, a few of which are suitable for vegetarians, plus a few mains that would fit the V-bill as well. I had the cheese plate which was a selection of three cheeses - a Blue which was good but really just tasted like a basic blue cheese, a mustard seed infused hard cheese which was really good, especially with the homemade applesauce they serve it with, and a porter-cheddar which I also enjoyed. This was served with sesame crackers, which were fine, thoughI love a good cheese board served with bread. This also came with candied pecans which were weirdly soft. My wife suggested they may have been roasted. We also shared the brussels sprouts side which normally comes with maple syrup and bacon. Of course we had it without the bacon, and they were able to do that still with the syrup and it was really tasty. They were perfectly cooked and just lightly sweetened by the maple syrup, and nicely charred as well. I also had the Kiss Off cocktail (the name, at least, a nice tribute to my Violent Femmes fanmanship) which was a Caribbean inspired rum drink with spices, Proseco, and a sprig of rosemary which went delightfully up my nose while I drank it. My wife got the Zaka Bowl, which was vegan and came with quinoa, various fresh vegetables, and a champagne vinaigrette dressing on the side (which she thought the dish didn't need). The vegetables were delicious, though she would've cook the zucchini longer, but says that could be just a matter of preference. The place was crowded when we entered, but fairly empty by the time we left. (We arrived at 7pm) and the staff were very nice. Also they had noted on their menu specifically which items were vegan, vegetarian and gluten free which is always appreciated by those of us who have those diets. South of Beale is a certified sustainable, project green, restaurant so they definitely put some thought into the health and sources of their food. Well done SOB! (Pro-tip: Make sure to take a picture of yourself under the sign that says "S.O.B." and send it to all your friends!) Oh, and they give you a free amuse-bouche of popcorn when your arrive!
