Wow what a cool place! I had intended to come here for the past year and never made it in until the night before Christmas eve. Around 8:50pm we strolled in. It was pretty empty besides a few tables. By the end of our night, around 10:45pm, the place had picked up and most tables were full. Not sure which crowd that would be but maybe people wanting a quick bite before hitting Beale Street? Our server was beyond nice and kept our water glasses full. She made excellent recommendations for drinks and dinner. I decided to go with the catfish, which is what I wanted. I decided against the cocktails on their menu and went with a Whiskey Sour made with Bulleit Bourbon Whiskey. I think it was around $7.00. Not bad at all. It was delicious and wonderfully made. It had this gorgeous foam on top that just made it so festive. The catfish and fries came out pipping hot. The fries were delicious and reminded me of hand cut fries. The catfish was seasoned and fried to a crisp perfection. The remoulade sauce on the side was a nice touch. I didn't even need hot sauce. I would definitely recommend the catfish. I ordered the Jack Daniels bread pudding for dessert because, jack daniels and bread pudding. I was a little underwhelmed with the dish. It seemed to have been cooked a little too long and was a little tough to eat. It had a nice flavor but I wouldn't order it again. This place is right on the trolley line, if the trolley is still running, and has a small parking lot of about 12 spaces. They also have a patio but it was far too cold to sit outside this go around. This place was right around the block from where I was staying, so had to check it out. Wasn't in the mood for anything super fancy, so got the Zaka Bowl and Gouda mac n cheese (gotta get that Mac n cheese). The zaka bowl was good and didn't have too many spices. Simple and yummy! The weather was perfect for our evening on the patio! Our server was attentive and explained the menu well, for our first visit here. Guess we ended up doing "carb overload", but it was so good. This was my second time trying this place, the first time was good, which is why I'm giving them 3 stars. I let the server know I was vegan after not being able to get the pasta because it had cream. No problem. So I ordered the Zaka Bowl, which I had bought once before with no issues. I got my order and went back to work, only to eat halfway through it and find CHICKEN in my zaka bowl. The Zaka bowl is on the menu as a vegetarian item. Neither vegetarians or Vegans would want to bite into a piece of animal in their meal, especially after letting the staff KNOW they don't eat meat. I've been vegetarian most of my life so when my husband and I travel we love to find cool restaurants that serve vegetarian options. I just need to understand, though, why nearly every time we find a place we want to eat - we also feel like we are starring in our own personal Portlandia episode. We ordered the poke(shared it), shrimp tacos, and the duck fried rice! All were really flavorful and were good portions sizes! The poke was really flavorful and had a good balance of seaweed,tuna, and avocado and the marinade was really good! My father reviewed the shrimp tacos as really good and had the right amount of kick in em! I had the duck fried rice and it was really flavorful! They both looked at me but never acknowledged I was there. Finally after some eye contact, I said hi and how are you doing? This is a very weird vibe but yet I wanted to give this place a try. So had the chicken bao buns. They were pretty good but the portion size was lacking. You get 3 for 13 bucks. There should be at least 4 for that price. Plus if I had another person with me and we wanted to share, 3 makes absolutely no sense. So the food is good but pricey, and the greeting to make you feel welcome was non existent. Interesting menu - it is a tad limited so check it out before you go. The duck fried rice had tons of duck in it but little else. The friend egg top made an good extra sauce but don't expect the obvious peas and carrots or sliced green onio cause it just isn't there. I got the pork bowl - it was ok. This is a gluten-free review. I do appreciate how the menu clearly labels all of the gluten free options. Much appreciated and makes the ordering process simple. Ordered the duck fried rice as an appetizer, followed by the pan seared salmon, maple bacon brussel sprouts, and a side of french fries. The fried rice was made from duck confit. I didn't mind the flavor, but it's nothing I will crave. Has a cinnamon-taste to it, which was unique. The salmon was cooked perfectly, as well as the brussel sprouts. Flavors here are good. I was debating between giving this place 2 or 3 stars due to the amount of salt they put in the food. The rice, fries, and salmon were overloaded with salt. South of Beale was a stand out during our day trip in Memphis. The reviews were good, the menu looked good, and overall it seemed to be a good place to check out, and it was. It is small space a bit off the beaten path but worth it. If not for the General Tso's Cauliflower alone. Fried cauliflower with homemade sweet and sour glaze, toasted sesame, and scallions. It is among the best General Tso's anything we have ever had! Such an impressive dish and in my option a must have when you visit. For dinner, I ordered the Curried Chicken Sandwich with raisins, green apple, lettuce, and tomato on a croissant served with quinoa tabbouleh. Once again, very impressed by the quality of this dish and depth of flavor. The portion was bountiful, so much so that for me, I ditched half the croissant and scarfed down the rest of my chicken salad with the quinoa tabbouleh, #sorrynotsorry. The overall service, while decent did have just one hiccup and that was with my water glass, which had lipstick on the rim. I, however, was not wearing lipstick. I was really excited to try South of Beale when I saw it on a local foodie page. The location was very close to our Airbnb and we saw a few items we were interested in on the menu. To start, they bring you free popcorn which I thought was really cute! The server was great and brought our drinks right away. I ordered one of the few vegetarian/vegan options on the menu, the Zaka Bowl. The flavors were good but overall and I enjoyed my dish, but this is something I could've easily made and home and saved some money. Excellent service and great food! Our second time eating here in 2 weeks, and had great experiences both times! Ordered the nachos with chicken instead of steak, and, unlike some restaurants in the area, the waiter and kitchen here were happy to accommodate the change! The pablano cream sauce was amazing! They should bottle and sell it! The mushroom pasta was spot on too... really nicely done! We were so happy to find a place where the music wasn't blaring - just nice and balanced so we could hear our own conversations and also enjoy the sounds of Main Street. It was so nice to find a spot in the neighborhood with consistent quality food and great atmosphere. I highly recommend the patio! The only thing I would change at all would be the patio/restaurant door. I found myself wanting to jump up to hold it every time a wait staff went through with hands full of dishes! Of course they declined my offer to help a few times ( I was sitting at the table closest to the door), and they passed it off as a non issue. I'm sure I'm extra conscious of this, since I waited tables decades ago in college, but I found myself brainstorming ways to make that transition smoother. What a great find. Just wanted a nice lunch in Memphis. What I got was a terrific perfectly prepared baked cauliflower with a superior mix of spices. Served with a sunny side egg on a bed of brown rice. A local dark beer. It was maybe 2:30 PM, staff was probably the lowest it would be all day and both the floor staff and kitchen delivered a great meal. My recent experience at SOB was the same as always, a great one! South of Beale is one of my go-to places when I'm looking for something good to eat! I love to tell people it's a "solid" top 5 choice because there is a nice selection of different dishes, the cocktails are ALWAYS good, the atmosphere gives off multiple vibes(its a well-rounded establishment), and they have the service to match! My favorite thing to eat used to be the Brussel sprouts and salmon but since the menu changes periodically you may not be able to get that during your visit. Some other favorites that are still there are the shrimp and grits, which I love, and the buffalo chicken sandwich! And Oh! That popcorn is fire! Sometimes I go just for the popcorn and cocktails! They have added some new things that i will jave to try on the next go round so i can update this review. However, whatever you select I'm sure you'll enjoy it! Definitely stop by soon read more

Stopped in today for lunch, we got there just after they opened and were first people there but many people soon came in as well. We started out with 2 appetizers for the table, Carne asada nachos and the snack board, both of which were great but we all agreed the nachos edged out the snack board. I had chicken and waffles, Beth had buffalo chicken sandwich, Oliver had the cheeseburger, and Sebastian had shrimp and grits. All the entrees were great, good portion sizes (shrimp and grits is huge) and all very tasty. We ordered 2 desserts for the table, chocolate cherry cheesecake and jack and coke bread pudding. Gluten-free indicators on the menu and lots of flavor for great prices! Prepare your palate. While in town for a conference, I walked down here for lunch. It has a good-sized open room with high ceilings and funky music. I really appreciated that the menu clearly marked the items that are gluten-free. There is also an indicator for vegetarian options. I opted for the infamous duck fried rice (no onions) with a side of the maple brussel sprouts. Both were relatively large portions that I left well-stuffed. The fried rice was salty and greasy with LOTS of duck. This isn't your typical fried rice with a few small pieces of meat. The sprouts had lots of sauce and giant chunks of crispy bacon. Lots of flavor all around. Both combined were also 16$. What a steal for that much duck! Next time: I'll try their salmon. read more
