3 night stay over 4th of July jubilee weekend. I'll start with the positives. The condo unit was…read morenice and cozy, clean and conveniently located (Laurelwood). The general store was a true gem. Top notch deli, and a wide selection of general goods and craft beers. My wife and I enjoyed the spa as well, they were very professional and attentive. The overall mountain atmosphere was breathtaking, giant old oaks, tons of trails ect.
The negative: we really wanted to like this resort, to leave a positive review, but our expectations were shattered to pieces. First off, the main restaurant, the edge, was without air conditioning our entire stay, Thursday through Sunday. We only ended up using one of our breakfast vouchers, due to the hot muggy restaurant. Attempted to eat dinner in there Friday night, but was overpacked, severely understaffed, and just a hot uncomfortable, muggy sweat pool. Walked over to the upper crust, and found that they had a severely reduced menu for the Fourth of July weekend . We decided to drive to one of their other restaurants, all the way back down the mountain, Iron and ale, just to find the exact same situation no air conditioning, over packed, and understaffed. We turned around and left after another couple walked out after seeing flies all over the tables. The rude host was wearing a polo shirt, board shorts, and crocs with long socks.... Not exactly the attire you would expect from a casual fine dining joint.
We ended up eating dinner at a little Mexican restaurant in Nelly's ford, was a very nice dinner, attentive waitstaff, overall delicious meal plus air-conditioning lol. We had hoped that the Fourth of July celebrations on Saturday would get rid of the bad taste We had so far. We were looking forward to this for an entire year. We researched and found very positive reviews of the Fourth of July celebrations of this resort. We figured it would be a magnificent event for USA 250th. There was absolutely zero effort, almost nonexistent patriotism. They had one American flag hung out from a firetruck at the main entrance. That was all. No clown decked out in Fourth of July attire, wrapping red, white and blue balloons for the kids, no face painting, no Rockwall, no moon bounce, no mechanical bull, no cotton candy, nothing for the kids. We don't even have kids, and felt so bad for the families. There was all of maybe 10 arts and crafts vendors, a slushy truck, and a kettle corn truck. That was it no funnel cakes, no rope sausages and peppers, no cheese steaks, no deep-fried Oreos no blooming onions. None of it.. they had a grill station with premade food, limited options, basically burgers, dogs, and chicken tenders. Out of all the bands that came on, no patriotic songs were played the entire day. All they did was play cover music. No Pledge of Allegiance, no American flag decor, literally zero effort for the 250th celebration.. after all this we figured maybe the fireworks would redeem our trip, this is what we were looking forward to the entire year, as we have not seen a really good professional show in years . This was honestly the biggest blow of all. The fireworks lasted all of 10 minutes, and no finale. we have put on better shows in our backyard with mortars and cakes from West Virginia and Pennsylvania. They literally had an orchestra there playing from 630 to 8 in a covered ticketed entry tent. Why was there not a marching band out playing during the fireworks with red white and blue sparkles going everywhere and a grand firework show for the 250th? The orchestra was already there.. we got a place early on the hillside and sat in the rain for three hours waiting for a 10 minute show. The rain stopped well before the fireworks, and if anything just wet everything down to make it safer to set fireworks off that night. What a disappointment of a show. The event coordinator here is obviously a very unpatriotic person who probably hates America. We will never return to this establishment, as I felt, the entire experience was a slap in the face for the money we spent, the anticipation we had built all year, and a disgrace to America's 250th.
