    Top of the mountain!
    Jesse V.

White Grass is a one of a kind gem. The atmosphere in the quaint lodge is worth the trip alone. There are few places left in the East as laid back (and as fun) as this place is, no big corporate resort vibe, just you, your skis and the woods. We usually will rent xc skis, but on a good powder day we'll bring our own alpine touring gear and skin up through the woods and get some great runs in. The lodge can be quite crowded, but the food is worth the wait. The quality of the lunch and dinners served are above and beyond your typical ski lodge fare and the prices are better. Its amazing to wake up in Winchester on a normal winter day with no snow in sight, drive just an hour and forty-five minutes and be in a winter wonderland. You can go from bored in town to skiing in Scandinavia in less time than it takes to watch a movie. Even if you know nothing about xc skiing, just come out here and give it try. If you don't love gliding through the snow covered trails at White Grass, immediately seek medical help - you may have a serious condition.

A really kewl place with a great vibe. This was a pleasant surprise. Never been cross country skiing and the kids and I had a blast. The staff are genuine caring ski bums. The ski facility is small with a large wood burning heater. The have a great kitchen that make some awesome soups. The kitchen is open for limited service for weekend dinners. They seem to specialize in organic/natural cooking After skiing Tiberline (downhill) and White Grass (cross country) The kids said they enjoyed white grass more. They said White Grass was more natural and less repetitive (up the slopes/down the slopes). The atmosphoe 5 star the Food 5 star the Staff 5 star the Value 5 star This would be a great place just to hang out and eat dinner.

White Grass on a cozy Saturday night in January with Celtic musicians.

White Grass is a true gem. We drove through snow and ice on a January night to find this remarkable and most unlikely of restaurants. We are so glad we did! Despite a busy Saturday night we were greeted immediately and were seated at a table where we could watch the Celtic musicians play nestled amongst t-shirt racks and cross country ski shoes in this house that doubles as a ski shop when not serving top notch meals. The atmosphere is cozy, warm and so inviting we returned the next night as well. Friendly and cozy is all fine and well but White a Grass is serving up the meals to match. I had a beef and Guiness kind of stew that made me feel like I was back in Ireland. There is also a terrific wine and beer list - I never thought I'd be drinking Chimay in West Virginia (no offense). If you find yourself anywhere near to Davis, WV go out of your way to visit this unique, delicious and inspiring spot!

I didn't get to see many of the trails farther out, was just skiing with little ones (7-3yo) around the lodge and nearby trails.

Lift prices are reasonable also. Parking is a little tight, but drop your family members and friends off at the front and park in the overflow lot, there is always room. I'm glad Timberline re-opened under new and well-run management, AND didn't sell out to Vail. The Epic pass appears to not improve resorts. Timberline, keep up the good work, and I hope you stay independent!

Parking was free, easy and convenient; I was a short walk to the lodge and the main lift. Picking up the lift ticket I had purchased online was also easy, there was a kiosk that issued the electronic card that worked from my coat pocket. Buying online and as a senior the one day lift ticket was a very reasonable $65. The mountain itself is easy to navigate; there is one main lift, a high speed detachable 6 pack that runs up the center of the mountain with all of the runs coming off of the lift. The lift has scanners that read the lift ticket and there are 2 sets of gates; this did seem to confuse some of the people in the lift line; I did see quite a bit of difficulty with people getting on and off the lift. The runs off the top of the mountain are a nice mix, 2 double blacks, 2 blacks, 3 blues and a long beginner green run. All of the runs give you 1000 feet of vertical; more then enough to give you a nice run, and plenty of challenge. Everything except for 1 double black run was groomed with good snow coverage. The runs have a nice variety, more than enough to make for a fun and invigorating day of skiing for intermediate and advanced skiers. A couple of notes, the bathrooms are conveniently located in the lodge without having to go to another level from the back of the lodge. If coming down the skiers right of the mountain you want to keep up some speed to make it all the way to the lift. Having 1 lift that is the only way to most of the mountain means that when there are issues with the lift stopped the lift line can get a bit longer then desired, but they managed to keep things moving for most of the day. Timberline is a very nice affordable option to ski or board in WV. Very nice for a day or two, although there is probably not much challenge for expert skiers. The 1000 feet of vertical and high speed lift make the mountain ski like a larger resort. Easy to navigate and affordable it is well worth considering for part of your ski trip in the area.

Spending a few days in WV mountain country…read more We are here on RCI points trading a few days for our Manhattan Club ownership. PS we are finding that the use fee of $199 every time we book is just not worth it to us to be RCI members. Check in was pleasant and easy. We asked for a few dining tips as we have never been to the area. The place is set up with 7 sets of condo/townhouse rows. We had a two bed/bath unit, two levels. Large kitchen with a small deck looking into the facility grounds. Well maintained and attractive grounds, in need of a bit of refurbishing. They are building an indoor pool. The construction started at 830am and continued until 430pm. Luckily we were out most days but the one day we were at the unit, Wednesday, the noise was terrible. Room a/c units worked fine if a bit loud. The vent fans in the bathrooms were very loud. Notably there is only one shower, two tubs one of which is a fancy hot tub with no shower or hand held shower. Ok w/us but folks with more guests should take note. Tennis courts are dismal. We played every morning for an hour. They were never crowded and we just walked on each day. The courts are lighted for night play but the surfaces are terrible with many cracks and undulations. They need to fix them or get rid of them. Washer and dryer in unit was great. We used them a few times. All in all a functional place to stay for our few days of exploring the area. We think it would be better suited to families. There is horse riding next door. Location is 20 mins to Davis and 45 mins to Elkins the two mountain towns nearby. Also the hamlet of Thomas, just beyond Davis, was an interesting place. If you are looking for fine dining this is not the place for you. Golf and skiing are one mile away. We were here in July. It might be nice to check the place out in Winter. We did play some golf at the Canaan GC. Very nice Course, well maintained and wide open. It is located inside a State Park. Breakfast place on the property just down the road nearby the entrance is a nice feature but we ate in our unit for breakfast. The weather during our stay was perfect. There is a lot of natural beauty in the area if you like that stuff, hiking and other outdoor activities, but dining options and night life are minimal. We explored the local towns and area. If the weather was poor it would be quite a tedious couple of days. Nancy & Mark.

I call it a resort because it absolutely fits the definition of a resort which is a place that is a popular destination for vacations or recreation, or which is frequented for a particular purpose. The destination is popular for all Canaan Valley activities (skiing, horse back riding, cavern exploration, etc). We frequent these cabins for recreation, relaxation, rest and recuperation. The cabins are second to none and the attention to detail is simply amazing. The cabins are decorated with five star quality and they all present that home away from home feeling. The kitchens have all the appliances, dishes, pots and pans that you need in order to prepare those home cooked meals while living in your home away from home. This was our second time visiting this luxury cabin resort and we decided to bring our brother and sister along for a birthday celebration. My wife and I stayed in the Royale Cabin and my Brother and sister stayed in the Majestic Cabin. When we arrived we walked right into our cabin and were amazed by the captivating appeal. The soft music was playing in the background and the cozy gas fireplace had the place warm and toasty inside. Both cabins were even meticulously decorated for Christmas holiday which was a very nice touch. Daniel & Jamie Marsh are Simply Outstanding and you can tell that they care about their customers experience. The location is amazing, the beds are incredibly comfortable, the hotel and grounds are spotless, and 24/7 free coffee is great. Now on to the bad. The biggest disappointment of the trip was that this is the only dog friendly place in the area that isn't an expensive cabin and you can't even leave your dog in the room by itself to go outside to smoke a cigarette- there were 2 things my boyfriend and I wanted to do without the dog, go to Smoke Hole caverns (which doesn't allow dogs you can't carry) and go have a sit down dinner 1 night and we couldn't even go smoke a cigarette without having to harness her up every time. The other complaints are that a second floor walkup sucks with a ton of luggage and having to bring the dog back and forth each time, there wasn't a chair in the room which made eating uncomfortable, the shower pressure was so bad I couldn't wash my thick hair in under an hour, there was seemingly no cold water in the sink or shower, there was no clock in the room (which I still appreciate in the age of cellphones), the complimentary breakfast was basically just pre-packaged cake, the complimentary toiletries were worthless, but what was crazy to me was that they didn't even provide hand soap or a bar of soap at the bathroom sink, and, as everyone has said, you can hear everything through the walls. Through it all, I would stay here again simply because of the location, this is an area where you want to be outdoors most of the time, but I really would have liked to be able to leave my dog in a room that I'm paying an extra $100 to have her in.
