We are looking to purchase a vacation home in Davis and we decided to stay at the Black Bear resort to see how it was, HUGE MISTAKE! We arrived on a Saturday and noticed dozens of dead cluster flies around the main window. It was obvious that no one had been in the room for weeks and then when we saw numerous mouse droppings, we were out. We offered to move to a new room, but they were sold out so Melissa the Mgr offered us a refund. When I emailed to get that going, I had to fight with her to get it. After many calls/emails, she returned a small fraction of what we paid. We would never stay here nor purchase property knowing that BB resort would be managing it, terrible in all respects. read more

I paid extra to get a cabin 84 with air conditioning, but it didn't work and wasn't repaired during my entire visit. I also met with grumpy office staff at check-in. I received a key and no information about where my cabin was. It took a lot of driving around to figure out that each cabin has TWO numbers, and I wasn't told which one was MY number. There were several lights burned out in the cabin, including the one over the front door, which made night entry especially difficult. Also, when they say "starter supply of TP and paper towels" ... that means half a roll of each. Best to bring paper supplies if there is more than one person staying in the cabin! The area is absolutely breathtaking, and the grounds are clean and inviting. The night sky is full of stars! And there are so many wonderful places to visit, like Blackwater Falls, Davis, Thomas, and Canaan State Park. The grocery store is in Davis and is well stocked with supplies. Prices are reasonable for a vacation area. If only things at the cabin had worked properly and the staff had been inviting, I would easily give this place 5 stars. But I really felt like my presence was an inconvenience. There was no offer of a refund or credit as a result of non-functioning A/C. read more

A small group of us stayed at Black Bear Resorts. Overall, we were all disappointed. Usually I do not make reviews of lodging but this one deserves mention. We got a lodge that sleeps 4-5 people. We decided on the lodge because of the affordability (about $50 per person, per night), and the location in Canaan valley. But the biggest issue was cleanliness. My pillow had stains on it. The carpet was heavily stained. The smell inside of the cabin was musty in a bad way (not refreshing and woody). The couch had a very bad smell that you could smell from 5 feet away. Because of the terrible smell, none of us could bear to sit and use the couch, and instead had to sit at the dinner table the whole time. I saw pictures of other lodges online which looked much nicer and cleaner than ours. It means there is a lot of inconsistency between cabins - so you could get a bad cabin despite what pictures show. Some things that were average: The bathroom was relatively clean and the kitchen had more tools than expected, even though the things there were in a bad state. For example, the grill was partially broken. There was a microwave, oven, and dishwasher which was still a plus. I guess it's nice that there was a Jacuzzi, but it seems somewhat outdated. The affordability and location are good, but there are risks in staying here. read more

What an awesome place! My husband and I rented an Airbnb that is located within this resort (I'm not really clear on how this works, I guess some of it is owned and some directly rented?) and we had such a wonderful weekend. Our ground floor studio was super clean and comfortable and opened out onto a shared patio and wide green lawn where our pup could play! We visited the big, clean pool and spent hours just enjoying the serenity, views, breeze, and greenery. Dog stations around the grounds are a welcome help! On our last night we made a fire in a communal fire ring (with wood conveniently stocked!) and chatted with another visitor, such a cozy way to end the weekend. Davis is a short 10min drive away and there's several restaurants even closer. For a place called a 'resort' this place is so quiet and peaceful. Exactly what we needed. We'll be back. read more

Close to the state parks, Davis and Thomas but also has the feeling of seclusion. Our cabin was cozy, clean and had a view of the horse farm next door. The large porch was perfect for watching the sun set with a glass of wine. Two complaints 1. the mattresses are very low quality and our backs suffered. I barely slept. I enjoyed the leather couch only slightly better than the beds. 2. the washer and dryer are ancient and Euro sized. This was our second visit to the area. The first time we stayed in a private room at an Airbnb house. It was just 'ok' and didn't have the amenities of Black Bear but at least we got some sleep. read more

Do not book here unless you want them to cancel your room on you, without any notification, and then confirm your booking when you call anyhow, leaving you stranded in the middle of a snowstorm. Here's my experience I was extraordinarily dismayed and upset to find that when I arrived on Friday night with my wife and sleeping toddler for this confirmed stay, there was no key, and I was told by the maintenance person (the only person who could be reached) that the room had been given away to someone else. This was particularly shocking because two days earlier to confirm my stay, gave my name, and the person working at your desk said that yes, I had cabin 94. I thought this was strange because I had cabin 77 on the registration, but your form indicates cabins may be switched. I told her I would be arriving after hours and when we did I followed her instructions, only to find no envelope with my name or cabin number. We were forced frantically to find another room for the night to avoid a 3.5 hour drive back home (it was 10 pm by this point) during a snowstorm. Fortunately we were able to find a room at another motel but only for one night. When I returned the next day to talk to someone at your front desk, she informed me that our room had been canceled in January. To be extremely clear, neither my wife nor I canceled our room. Nor did we receive any notification of the cancellation at the time that this happened, in any way, though they had my phone and email. The person working the desk also said that the room I was told I had when I called two days before check in was for another person with my same first (but not last) name, but clearly not me. Nevertheless, this staff member insisted we cancel the reservation, which we clearly did not do as we showed up at 10 pm for the room. So to recap, Black Bear resort canceled my room reservation when (I presume) someone else called to cancel their room, provided no notification of the cancellation, then this past week confirmed to me over the phone that I had a reserved room on the dates designated, and left me stranded in the snow with my wife and almost 2 year old struggling to find a warm place to stay the night. When I pointed this exceedingly unacceptable, unprofessional, and frankly almost unbelievable behavior (except that I have the receipts) to the staff, they said there was nothing they could do, not even fully refund the cancellation fee for a cancellation we did not request or want. They have ignored repeated emails and phone calls. Do not stay here unless your idea of a good time is to be stranded in your car during a snowstorm because they gave away your reservation, then confirm your non existent room anyways, and then ignored all requests for a remedy. read more

For those looking to get away from urban cityscapes, Black Bear Resort is a year round retreat offering tranquility and scenic views for hiking, horse riding, skiing, hunting, fishing, etc. There resort is surrounded by nature preserves a short drive away. Located just outside "downtown" Davis, WV these cozy cabins could accommodate a family work small children and perhaps up to four adults. My partner and I rented the cabin for a most relaxing winter wonderland getaway. All you can use dried firewood is nearly stacked under the cabin for use inside a chipper fireplace. Bring your own kindling! You'll certainlyl want to spend the better part of the stay lounging in the warmest place in the cabin during the winter months. There's a complete kitchen with an electric stove/oven, coffee maker, toaster, microwave, fridge. Bring your cooking knives, as theirs are lacking in quality (but still functionally mostly work). Kitchen drain is slow, and don't throw food down the drain as they're is no disposal. West Virginia isn't known for providing consistent safe and clean drinking water, so if also bring enough gallons for your drinking needs. There's a washer/dryer combo in the bathroom, but the shower drain is slow enough you'll want to take a lickety-split shower despite the water pressure being good and heat nice. The cabin comes complete with enough soaps/detergents to get you through a few days but it probably doesn't hurt to bring more for an extended stay. Downstairs sees a jacuzzi tub which opens to the back porch and unimpeded nature views. The water pressure and tank heater is barely enough to fill the tub to nice and hot temperatures, and you can only fill it up about once a day, since that seems to be the water heaters capacity. T-mobile cell phone coverage was nearly non existent but my partner had good success with AT&T. Wifi in the house is strong enough to allow for video streaming as desired, and you can even semi-confortably WFH as your needs go. This place sees snow! No joke, it's to your advantage to bring a four-wheel drive or snow chains because the snow easily clears ankles. The groundskeepers do their best, but your car will find ice, so some experience with snow driving is strongly recommended. "Downtown" offers a few dining options, but if you want to do your own cooking you'll have to trek 45-min through country roads to get to the Kroger in the next town over (or just being enough ingredients from the get-go) All in all an excellent and inviting place to snuggle up with a loved one and a good launching point to experience some of that "wild and wonderful" west Virginia read more

We loved staying at this resort! Out unit was managed by one of the outside rental companies, however we loved the amenities we could take advantage of during our stay (swimming pool, walking paths for walking dogs and strolling, hiking by the ponds). Everything was clean and well kept. The view from our cabin was beautiful, with Timberline ski resort in the distance and the nature preserve in the field in front of the cabin. It's close to Davis with all the cute shops and restaurants, and also close to hiking at Dolly Sods. WiFi worked well in our cabin, and we were also glad we could bring our dog. We stayed in August, so some amenities like putt putt and the gift shop were closed due to Covid. But overall we loved staying here and can't wait to return. read more

Booked online for 6 days, reservation was changed to 8 days and then when I requested it get corrected it was adjusted to 5 days. I called in to tell them that the reservation had gotten all botched up and requested a refund to cancel the trip all together I was told I would be charged the full amount and the lady on the phone was rude and when asked for the manager was told she was not in and to have a nice day and then hung up on.. Stayed in one of the cabins for a weekend with my wife and son. Overall the place was cozy and comfortable, but there's a layer of dust and cobwebs on pretty much every surface that doesn't get touched on a daily basis. When I stripped the bed for checkout there were peanut shells under the sheets and random socks left in the closet. Again, overall positive experience but the cleanliness could use a little work. The cabins at Black Bear Resort are individually owned and only managed by Black Bear Resort. That being said, we stayed at Cabin 83 and had an amazing stay. The cabin is tastefully decorated and cozy; all white linens, stocked kitchen, wood burning fireplace and a full sized washer/dryer. The owners have thought of little touches as having frozen pint glasses in the freezer, books about the area and for bird watching, movies, board games, and a speaker to listen to music on your phone. These were especially helpful during a rainy afternoon. This cabin has a traditional staircase which is unique to cabins this size at Black Bear. It's close to everything we needed, Canaan Valley, Blackwater Falls, Davis and Thomas. We loved our time at this cabin and will be staying here again. read more

We had a fabulous New Year's stay at one of Black Bear Resort's pedestal cottages. There were six of us (3 couples) sharing the 2 bedroom (including a loft) + futon and we felt very cozy and not overcrowded at all. We loved the rustic feel, the themed woodland decor, making meals in the full kitchen, enjoying the fireplace and even some of the board games. We had a separate spa room jacuzzi we used as well, though it was more of a whirlpool tub for 2 then a spa jacuzzi for 6 - we did nevertheless attempt to all squeeze in! On the first day the jets weren't working, but once we called the next day received very prompt service even though the main lodge was closing soon and it was New Year's Eve. The jets were fixed quickly, so definitely no complaints for the customer service. The cabin had everything we needed - pots, pans, soap, towels, extra blankets, salt/pepper, etc. We did need more toilet paper because there was only one roll, and this was provided when asked. They do warn you that they only provide enough dishwasher soap, laundry detergent, and toilet paper to last only through short stays and then you need to get your own, which is understandable. The laundry and dishwasher detergents are mostly for your check-out cleaning - they request that before you leave you load all the towels into the washer, load up the dishwasher, and strip the sheets from the beds. I was a little surprised by these requests because I've never had to do that at another hotel/resort, but okay. The only thing the cabin did NOT have was wi-fi. I guess some of the cabins do, some don't, and we were in the latter group. While the cabin was fantastic, I do wish the outdoor pool was open and heated in the winter and generally that there were amenities, since this was called a resort. There is plenty to do in the area though, and we took advantage of trips to ski at Canaan, hike at Dolly Sods and Blackwater Falls, and explore downtown Davis and Seneca caverns. Overall it's cheaper than other Canaan Valley cabins if you can forgo those amenities and just enjoy the area, which we certainly did. read more

Awesome! Oh I loved and will totally come back. Our cabin was tucked into the woods so fabulously that from our bedroom it felt like being in a treehouse with the awesome breeze sweeping in and only trees and the sound of leaves brushing against each other. We were here in midsummer and it was gorgeous. No a/c but no need. It actually got kinda cold keeping the windows open, in a good way though. Can't wait to return! read more

What a great place for a relaxing time! The resort is in the Canaan Valley and has easy access to the state parks (only minutes away depending on which state park you choose to go). Great, clean, vacation rentals - either the pedestal home or the inn suites that are completely furnished. We stayed in the large pedestal with the jacuzzi and it was so nice and cozy. It had a full kitchen, bathroom, master bedroom, a loft, along with a living room area that is filled with magazines, books, games, and movies to choose from. They also have a grill out on the large deck. Very quiet and private. You also have access to the resort amenities such as the pool, fitness trail, miniature golf, tennis court and badminton area. It is a pet friendly resort, however, they only allow pets in certain pedestal homes. Nearby, there are small towns with some stores and restaurants as well. Mainly the area is more for enjoying outdoor activities. Another plus - hardly any mosquitoes due to the high altitude that the town is situated in. We visited here back in July and had no problems with mosquitoes at all. read more

Well....as I said on my check in....it's not what it once was. We have had a couple of stays there in 2010 and 2011, but this last stay was unsatisfactory. There also seems to be a new management team there. I had asked for a unit with few stairs. As we fell in love with Black Bear, we wanted to share the place with my wife's parents who have issues with stairs. We arrived late and guess what....our unit had a couple of flights of stairs to navigate. Not a good start. Once inside, the air conditioning wasn't functioning improperly. This was reported the next day and the maintenance person arrived..she adjusted the thermostat, played hokey pokey over the vent with her foot and declared it functional.....it was not. Next up was a jacuzzi tub....broken and non functional. Our maintenance guru was befuddled and said you usually push this button...oh that's broken...no one reported that. There were also little touches like broken lamps which had to be plugged and unplugged...cigarette butts left in plastic cups on the deck, and burned out lights....all this for almost $1000.00 for 3 nights. When I complained, offered 10%off....really?... The property isn't being maintained, they obviously do not walk the rentals with a punch list or pre operations check,nor did they seem all that interested in getting me back....be warned, the property is aging, and in my case they didn't listen to or wanted dispute issues...I shouldn't have to troubleshoot no air in the loft.....pay for a non functional tub, not tip a non exist ant cleaning service. read more

Not great. This resort has seen better days. The pool wasn't open on 4th July, the lodge closed early and staff was not helpful. Poor plumbing in cabins *privately owned*, but apparently is common. We drove three hours from the city to have loud music broadcast from a cabin through entire resort until after dark. Honestly would have had more peace and quiet at home. read more

Do yourselves a favor and look at another resort. From the word go, we had a horrible stay here. When we arrived, there was a good 2 feet of snow piled up on the stairs and entryway. Since there was no shovel to be found, we had to dig our way in with a flat piece of firewood. After two phone calls, each of which assured my wife they "were sending someone with it shortly", the shovel we requested never arrived. During the third phone call, I was told that it would be there the following morning. To top this little fiasco off, the lady answering the phone acted like doing her job and handling a call was somehow a bother. I'm not sure which realtor oversees this place, but I'll be sure to find out and slap a review over there as well. Outside of having to use the dustpan as a makeshift shovel (fyi, it worked better than the wood), the cabin was simply "meh". Well, except for the fact that they never bothered to take out the trash. That was less than "meh". Horrible. Horrible. Horrible. read more

I had a horrible stay at this place. The lodgings were good, except the tv that didn't work, and the hot water that takes about 10 real time minutes to heat up. My primary complaint was with the security guards. They assaulted me with a door, threatened me with a flashlight, and tried to rush us out of the event we paid for before the end of the rental time. I complained about this to the resort in person the following day, and they didn't want to hear it, told me to write an email. I wrote an email, and they ignored me. For your own safety, PLEASE NEVER STAY HERE. There are other rental cabins available in the area. Who ignores an excessive force complaint in 2021? read more

I recently got married on St Patricks Day. We wanted a small get away from the city (Baltimore). We drove about 4 1/2 hours to get here. At first we didn't know what to do being in the middle of nowhere. We came to this resort, stayed 3 nights and one extra for free!!!! They are the most adorable cabins I have ever seen. The one we stayed in was so comfortable and very well maintained. It had everything and more. The fireplace was my husbands favorite. Mine of course was the relaxing jacuzzi which could fit a small army lol We have already told our friends and family about this place. We're looking into coming back sometime later this year. We had a great time at Black Bear Resort. We rented a "luxury pedestal". While it is not luxurious, it sure was pretty awesome! There were just 2 stairs from the driveway to the deck - other cabins have like 10 or more stairs, and that was a bit too much after a hard day biking and hiking. The cabin, they call them pedestal cabins, looks strangely perched, but it was quite good. There was a big expansive deck that wrapped around the unit. Inside was a good kitchen with good, albeit dated (probably from the late 90's) appliances, but they all worked well. Our kids loved the loft, with their own tv and bunk beds. Our unit had a jacuzzi tub that worked as well as wifi...which was a bit slow, but we are told that it is in the process of being upgraded. We will be back in December, so will provide a follow-up. We definitely would recommend the place and look forward to coming back in the future. read more

Black Bear Resort holds a special place in our hearts. We started coming to the Valley in 1998, staying in a pedestal house at Black Bear. There was just the right amount of room for our young family of four (at the time), and the price was very fair. There is something perfectly charming about staying "in the trees" with all the comforts of home, but much cozier and made for memories. Our pedestal house(s) had a small living room with wood burning fireplace, full galley kitchen, eating area, one bedroom and bath on the main level. Upstairs the loft usually had some configuration of bunk beds or futons. The Resort has a lovely heated pool, a club house with pool table and dance floor, a central pond (they allowed my son to fish all those years ago), play equipment, mini golf, and rolling green lawns. It's such a pretty place. We have found that we need a bit more room to spread out now when we visit Canaan Valley, but those early days were some of the best at Black Bear Resort. read more

My fiancé and I found this place and thought it was perfect for our wedding. But we sadly found out that it had extremely poor customer service! I worked with one person the entire time, Jaineay, and every time I spoke with her, the policies had changed from what she previously had told me. She got nasty/sarcastic on several occasions and even called me the day of my wedding because she couldn't get ahold of some of my guests to check out (she had already tried to call them on their cells and the suite phones so I don't really know what she wanted me to do). She also told me that everyone would get a 10% discount if more than 5 units were rented and then wouldn't allow me to have the 10% because I had already paid in full and wouldn't credit it to me to use for my pastor's room. So that meant that I lost over $100 because I paid too early!! She also told me that we could decorate the night before but then wanted to charge us $55 an hour if we needed to stay after 5PM. We were planning on going back next year and renting a cabin for our 1-year anniversary but we will NEVER stay there again which is a shame because the cabin was beautiful and the resort itself is amazing. read more
