This stop was our two-day "play and reset" window between Acadia NP and New River Gorge NP -- a…read morequiet breather in the beautiful WV mountains. We stayed at the lodge and had breakfast there both mornings, mostly because options nearby are... well, nonexistent. Luckily the buffet was generous, the food was decent enough to fuel the day, and the views helped everything go down a little easier. Service, however, could definitely benefit from a hospitality tune-up -- a smile and a bit of warmth go a long way before coffee! That said, the park itself is lovely. We enjoyed peaceful trails surrounded by lush forest, and the falls are truly worth the trip -- dramatic and grounding. I got in a few good hikes, while my husband happily took in the waterfall views from the accessible paths, which are thoughtfully laid out and easy to navigate. There's a dumpster where you can leave your trash instead of packing it out. Seems well-run. You can't see the river from the campsites (not ours, at least) but it's quite accessible. Our site (number 39) had a path (somewhat treacherous and steep) down to the water. Once you complete the circuit, it's a short walk to ride by again. Some of the rapids are a bit rough and could be dangerous for kids. Bring everything you need. Once you're at your campsite, it's a long way back to civilization to pick up anything you forgot. It's a fairly long drive to Dolly Sods but hiking there is beautiful. Things to know: BYO tube. Bring water shoes. River can be a bit shallow with big rocks and you need foot protection. Three packs of firewood for $20. Buy earlier in the day rather than right at dusk. Bring cash. One picnic table per campsite. Road in is a bit rough and twisty. There are signs about how to take care of your food and trash as to avoid attracting bears. There's a pole you can hang trash from at your site, which is convenient.

We found all the staff at Eagle's Nest to be very pleasant, friendly and accommodating. We had about 15 rigs, and rented one cabin. Paul placed us in sites very near each other, and close to the pavilion which perfectly met our needs for the event. The pavilion near the creek, with electricity, lighting, a nearby restroom, and running water, was a great set-up for our group meetings and meals. Paul even set up a fire ring near the pavilion for our evening campfire and music. The camp facilities were very clean and level, with full services at each site. The restaurant on site (Fireside Inn) has an extensive menu. Try the cauliflower soup ... it is FABULOUS. Eagles Nest is conveniently located near Cumberland, MD - a great local tourism spot with museums, shops, restaurants, and a scenic railroad ride. The campground is still a work in progress and we look forward to going back to see how it is coming along. Paul has a great vision for further improvements and is working hard toward that end. With a mix of seasonal and transient residents, most in self-contained units, there is little need for public facilities. Some in our group might have preferred a public bathhouse (in future development plan), but the lack of a public bathhouse would not prevent our return. Happy trails ...

We had a great experience at Eagle's Nest September 2019, our 39th annual 'Rolling Thunder' rally. The camping, accommodations, food and entertainment were some of the best we have enjoyed. We've been to some places that I don't feel really safe. I feel safe here, and don't worry about leaving chairs or belongings outside. The owner, Scott is great. When you text him, he responds faster than anyone else I know! He is working to improve the park and building little airbnb places on the property, so he is around much of the time. The park is quiet, and since it's winter, it's not really crowded. I believe that there are other travel nurses here too. We extended our assignment here in Elkins, so we plan to stay right here at Smokey Bottom Campground.
