The campground is famous for its sold out annual Bluegrass festival yet it is gaining attention for its powwow events. It was very easy to find the campground. We went to the Five River Campgrounds for the Third Annual Powwow in Parsons in June 2025. It was the most meaningful pow wow I ever experienced. The owners of the campground (Joyce & John) gave the sales of the tickets to the powwow to the MMIW (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women) Memorial Grove. The non profit organization is involved in promoting awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. Some of the performers gave their earnings to MMIW Memorial Grove as well. The Five Rivers Campgrounds owners welcomed us with open arms and immediately noticed us as photographers. We do a lot of philanthropic work in photography yet we rarely get noticed or thanked by many people for it. The owners of the campground were selling tee shirts and stickers with our photography. We had given permission to have our photography used to the performer we have taken the photo of and we were happy to see that he & the owners of the campground were displaying our photography on tee shirts and stickers in the campground shop. The campgrounds are beautiful with views of the mountain. Immediately staff helped us park and alerted us of the speed limit on the campgrounds. The powwow was held outdoors and there was an open air arena with a roof to provide shade. The stage in the venue had a shelter and a good view. You had to provide your own seating, yet we knew that beforehand. The fee for the pow wow was $10 for two days, and we captured the most memorable and beautiful photos we ever took on those days of performers in regalia against green foliage and the mountains. The powwow was small yet the amazing camaraderie and performers were unforgettable. This was one of the finest powwow venues in ambiance, performance, connections, and professionalism we ever experienced.

There's lots of nearby trails you can use up there and each trail could take you a whole day. So if you're limited on time (like we were) choose wisely. Eber was the owner/manager and he was really friendly and accommodating. He was super helpful, gave us a map of the nearby trails and had wonderful insight to help us plan out our activities. He also provided firewood and ice for really cheap. The grounds themselves were clean and we have no complaints. There was cold drinking water. The restrooms (male and female) were extremely clean and stocked. There is a large lamp-post in the center of the grounds that lights up the water fountain area and the vicinity pretty well, but if you are in one of the camp sites on the edge of the grounds you will likely need several other sources of light/fire in order to see around you. There are some tall trees in/around the camp grounds so if your first priority is star-gazing I'd give this spot a 7.5/10 for that specific purpose. Everything else was a 10/10 for us.

There are 6 full hookup sites and some tent sites all adjacent to the State Forest. The owner Eber is super nice and helpful. He checked on us a few times and offered suggestions on where to go and what to do nearby. Spruce Knob is the highest point in West Virginia. It's also one of, if not the darkest places on the Eastern seaboard. Stargazing from Spruce Knob is a spiritual experience. Hiking on the mountain was awesome although the trails are not well maintained and require a careful step. However the loop on the top of the mountain is really nice and easily traveled at night with a flashlight. Parking is right on top of the mountain so no need to walk very far. I definitely recommend this campground if you are looking for a simple camping experience. But beware your phone service will be terrible.

The peace and tranquility here is off the charts. It was a beautiful day, the temperature was about 68, and the sky was perfect. Every time I leave here I go a different way out to try and get lost, but after about two hours of exploring and finding some cool new roads and places, I made it back onto US-33 off of Glady Fork Rd by The Lodge in Alpena. What a great place to relax and unwind and learn news roads in and out. I have always loved this whole area and I always will. I'll be seeing you again very soon Spruce Knob :D

We saw so many deer which i loved seeing. in the end light was going too fast we made it to the lake but didn't make it to the top because sun was going down. driving those roads in low light was a bit scary. I know my husband really had wanted to be heading home much earlier and not be driving those roads in the dark. But once he realized I was wanting more exploring he went with it. I really would like to return. I wish we had spent more time in WV and skipped skyline drive. I have fell in love with WV. He kept wanting to move on to SKyline drive and down to Gatlinburg. I was wanting all WV.

Beautiful campground Laundry room was clean…read more It was a rainy weekend but the kids enjoyed playing on the playground when it wasn't raining It's a small playground but enough for our little ones The wifi worked fine There are some toys in the shop for kids to play with on rainy days The owner makes custom tumblers; I bought two, one of which she made custom for me. They are all beautiful! We would've stayed longer but the following weekend was fully booked so we are on the road again

Here for three train rides with my train loving husband…read more All employees were friendly, from the trains themselves to the stores. Company store had a plethora of items for all ages; hubby had a field day!! Beautiful area and very remote . Bus tours came daily, but not excessive as seating on the trains is limited, so good crowd control lol These trips book up months in advance; my husband booked it a year ago so don't drive up thinking you can get a seat. Three trips: ( different Shay locomotives too, but I am not the expert with this). 1. Bald Knob : a 4.5 hour train ride up the mountain. It was an open car, and it was pretty cold, even for those prepared. The scenery was pretty but I saw zero wildlife. We were going to have a hot cocoa, but after waiting on line for over 10 minutes, they ran out. There was a guy reading over the P.A., giving some history. They give you a " hobo lunch" : bun, turkey and ham, pasta salad, applesauce, chips, water bottle, 2 cookies and mustard and mayo. Bring additional snacks/ drinks as it's a long trip...and gloves and hats if during fall trips. 2. Greenbriar River: a more pleasant ride, 2.5-3 hours, enclosed car with table seating. Narrated as well at parts, but P.A. was terrible. Lunch was at a restaurant ( make your own sandwiches) in Durbin, our stop, and there were three choices which they determined. Saw 2 turtles and one bird. Highlight was meeting the people who Sartre across from us. 3. Whittaker Station: about a 2.5 hour trip, also on an open car. This trip had the most informative and interesting narration of the three. Got my hot cocoa lol and some pretty photos. Interesting town history. A cool experience for train buffs and company houses are available to stay in. Beautiful area.

Yeah that's all you see 90% of the time: trees! Train they used was originally for transporting lumber. They built wooden benches there and we had to sit all 5 hours on those benches. For the experience the price is absolutely ridiculously high. I think they should pay us to go through this insanity. For 5 hours there is zero service on the train. You can't buy water or snacks. They give you plastic bags with some cheap food that we would never touch like cold cuts of the cheapest sort and bottle of water. They stop at the end at some stop where they sell gas station snacks. This trip would be good the most for one hour but 5 hours it was real torture. Do not advise for older people or people with kids. Kids were going nuts from boredom. Horrific experience .

I camped at Kumbrabow State Forest mid April while attending a Ramp Festival in Pickens, WV…read more Kumbrabow is a jewel! Tons of hiking trails, trout fishing, gun and archery range, and home of the Bowers CCC Camp. The staff at Kumbrabow was helpful and attentive from the time I called to get information to while I was there. Kumbrabow has tent/RV camping (no hook ups), and cabins - all along picturesque Mill Creek. The WV Forest Service has positioned split firewood at the entrance of the camping area for sale. There are three pit toilets, but no water at the camping area. There is a bath house, with hot water and laundry, two and a half miles from the camping area. The bath house is in the same area as the Ranger Station. Payment for camping sites, first come first serve, are self pay ($17.00/night) next to the wood shed. Make no mistake, Kumbrabow is remote, but worth the trip.
