We absolutely loved our Christmas train ride. Super cute for young kids and very interactive. Freezing outside but nice and warm inside.

Guided tours only past this point

The drive in was unbelievably pretty! Often traveling between mountains or along a creek or river, and with the windy roads twisting and turning around rocky bends and mountainsides. There's nothing at all between White Sulphur Springs and Cass, so stock up before it be ready to wait until you arrive. I loved the idea of staying in one of the converted company homes while potentially going up to Snowshoe. I was there on Christmas Eve, so no trains running (which may be just as well as the dog is alarmed at best, terrified at worst of trains) but stopped by the diner for a chicken sandwich and baked good before strolling around town, the rail cars, and the Greenbrier River Trail. Definitely "Almost Heaven" nestled in the mountains with an old time feel, big in charm, low paced, and a break from day to day. I'll have to come back sans dog with a ticket for the train ride!

I've been coming to Cass sporadically since I was in elementary school. I'm now almost 50. I have some fond memories of riding the rails and seeing the Shay locomotives in action. But on this most recent trip, in early August, I was very frustrated to learn, after the fact and after making a Company House reservation for my family of four, my older brother, and my younger brother and his family of four, that on Mondays and Tuesdays...even in the heart of summer, the whole train scene is closed, except for the store. The restaurant is closed, the museum is closed, the theater/ diorama building is closed, and yep, you guessed it, no trains run on these days. So, we drove for three hours, rented a house, and couldn't even go in the museum read about the town and trains. That's a lot of lost business...we were a party of nine. Whoever runs this place obviously has no business sense.

I Don't get all the hype. Its VERY slow, and nothing to see but lots of trees. Zero wildlife, rock formations, just absolutely nothing passing by at 4mph. (Bald Knob Trip). The trains are very cool, decent little lunch, nice people and great view at the top, but overall a very boring 4.5 hours. Neat company store too.

A shay. An example of the locomotives there

Cass is an amazing place. It is more of a step back into time. Nowhere will you find a finer collection of logging locomotives than at Cass The cars used on the ride up the mountain are built on the frames of the cars that brought lumber down in years past. On a clear day the view from the top of bald knob is amazing. It will be colder on the mountain top, if you don't dress appropriately, nobody will feel sorry for you. (Least of all me) Be sure to visit the company store, and eat at the restaurant. The food is simple but very good. I personally think your visit is not complete unless you stay in one of the employee houses. If you have a group of people (some of the houses sleep 10) the price is great. Stop by a grocery store and get food on your way there, the houses have a full kitchen with cookware but the options to buy food in the area are very slim) My wife and I enjoyed some great morning coffee on the porch with deer and woodchucks roaming on by. We plan on going back.

This is a great fall trip I don't think I could have Purchased a better anniversary gift for friends that were visiting us. The trip to Bald Knob is an amazing journey of colors in the fall. Be prepared to enjoy the Slow 2 hour and 30 min trip up the 12 miles of mountain track, with two stops to oil up and add water to the steam engine by taking in the beauty WV has to offer. A Sandwich, chips and small pasta salad is given to all as you board the train. While the passenger's cars have a roof, the sides are open allowing unobstructed views of the mountain, and trees. You might even see a few deer along the way. Depending on the time of year, it could get cold as you go climb the mountain. The train whistle is very loud which is annoying at times. The engine does belch smoke, but it really did not bother anyone in our party. We sent about 30 min on top of Bald Knob, which provides miles and miles of mountain views on a clear day. You can even get a glimpse of the massive radio satellite at Green Bank. The trip is twice as fast as the trip up, and provides a second opportunity to enjoy the wilderness of WV. Perfect family outing.

    The coal ran train!

Such a wonderful experience. The ride up the mountain was smooth & the story of the railroad history was entertaining. Stopping at the top for a quick walk around was gorgeous with the foliage at its peak. The shop at the base is nostalgic. Only complaint is the staff was not prepared for the influx of customers even though it's only by reservation & the train was full plus passerby's pop in to their cafe & shop as well.

When I looked up the bald knob 4 hour trip on the internet it was booked for months out! I called the number on the website and they had two cancellations during my stay in West Virginia. I am so glad those people cancelled since it allowed my party to go- what an experience! I was in "H" car and it was 3 away from the engine so we didn't have it quite as loud as some... lunch given was great and plentiful. Applesauce, pasta salad, cheese slice, bun, ham and turkey, mayo packet, mustard packet, lays original chips, 1 chocolate chip cookie, 1 sugar cookie. They hand it out before you board the train. One side of seating misses out on most of the scenic outlooks but you can stand up and get pictures. The real view was at bald knob! What a great view -- no wonder it was sold out for months! Breathtaking view for sure! Pictures don't even do it justice. We went on a very clear day and was able to see all the beautiful mountains. Highly recommend this trip! 5 stars!!!

Definitely a must-do at least one time in your life. Met a wonderful couple from Michigan on our ride; enjoyed their company so much that we had dinner afterwards at the Gateway Restaurant together as we helped escort them do their next destination, since there isn't cell service in a 25 mile area around the Green Bank Observatory area. Recommend the longer ride since the views are splendid and you get a nice "hobo" lunch with it. Make sure to bring a face covering of some sort to block the smoke and soot and don't wear white. Also recommend cars C-I and not near the engine

A train lovers paradise! I have been visiting Cass Scenic Railroad my entire life and there is always something new to see. Take a train ride to Bald Knob, enjoy a bite to eat at the Last Run Restaurant and grab a souvenir at the company store! Be sure to take a free town tour offered by the park and inquire about locomotive shop tours for a behind the scenes look at how the trains are taken care of.

Ask the Community - Cass Scenic Railroad

Can we camp here with an RV?

We are so sorry for the delayed response. The only station that has RV Camping within walking distance would be the Durbin Station next to the East Fork Campground. You would need to make reservations with East Fork separately.

Do you have security parking for motorcycle for over night?

We do not have night guards on staff but have never had reported issues with vandalism or theft.

A number of years ago, my husband and I visited the educational Discovery…read moreCenter for the Seneca Rocks National Recreation Area, and got a great view of the Seneca Rocks from the parking lot. But, it was late in the day on a Sunday and we had a long drive ahead of us, so we decided not to attempt to hike up the trail, but we put it as yet another item on our bucket list. We returned to the area in Sept, 2025, specifically to attempt to do the hike. No concerns as to whether my husband would be able to do it, but I have to admit that I was apprehensive as to whether I could! The brochures say that it's 1.5 miles each way (up, and then back down) and you gain almost 850' in elevation. And, did I mention that I'm in my 60s, NOT a regular hiker, and with a medical condition that affects my balance? Nonetheless, my husband and I donned our hiking boots, put on some sunscreen, packed a picnic lunch, snacks, and water, and my hiking stick -- and we were on our way! The trail is wide and well-maintained and, as others have mentioned, has steep sections, especially in the switchbacks towards the top. It's a steady climb up, and my Fitbit registered some intense exercise, but my heart rate never reached its peak category. Given my balance issues, having my walking stick and an occasional hand from my husband, especially on the descent in steep areas with roots or stones, were helpful. I tried not to be discouraged by the two very fit runners who raced by us, recognizing that the majority of hikers and dogs on leash were panting at least to some degree! There are occasional benches, especially towards the bottom, and signs pointing out ecological features. There's an observation deck at the top, with gorgeous views of the valley below, as well as shaded benches to enjoy our picnic lunch. You can't see the rocks from the observation deck. However, some hikers scramble over some additional rocks for more views though signage warns that this can be dangerous. I'm happy to report that my husband and I both completed the hike, and we are now able to cross that item off of our joint bucket list. We celebrated our accomplishment by getting some ice cream at Yokum's, just down the street! Admission to the Seneca Rocks National Recreation Area and parking is free. Staff in the Discovery Center are exceptionally helpful. There are picnic tables and restrooms at the base, and the Seneca Shadows Campground is about a mile down the street.
