The river is absolutely beautiful and great for fishing. This park is well maintained and monitored. We were stopped by a ranger who checked our fishing licenses so we were glad the natural resources are being protected. When visiting, hiking up to the Woodstock Tower is a must. The terrain is moderate but it is definately worth going to the top. The view is breathtaking at 2000 feet elavation. Great place to take a break from the hustle and bustle of city life!

Tantivy Farm is one of those places…read more This magical place is one where you can walk through lavender fields, eat lavender ice cream, shop for lavender products, and meet some farm animals. It's a family-owned farm run by super nice people, and it's a great place to visit when you're in the Lexington area. You can explore more than a thousand lavender plants of 20 different varieties here. I visited during the off season, when the lavender bushes were spent and dormant, but there were a few sprigs here and there, and even so, the rest of the garden was lush and beautiful. If you want to experience the lavender fields in full bloom, you'll want to visit in late spring through summer. Around the end of May to the end of June is when they do U-pick lavender, where you can pick your own lavender bouquets. The owners also produce and sell lavender products, dried and fresh wreaths, lavender food (including lavender ice cream!). Friendly farm animals also live on the farm, and you might be able to meet and greet them. These are the most content and happy animals I've encountered maybe ever. Could it be because they live on a lavender farm and they're absorbing the calming vibes of this medicinal plant? Most likely it's because the owners are super awesome and treat the animals like family. It's great to see. The farm is open May to December.

A rail to trail that runs…read morealong a small river, it does deliver some fantastic views and is a flat and wide path that is amenable to biking and walking. It is free and has multiple entry points. On the downside, Covington is dominated by a cardboard manufacturer. I just moved from another place that had a similar factory, but for those without such experience, something involved in this industry smells strongly of wet dog, and the smell spreads widely. So at least on part of this trail, you've got that to contend with as well as a surprising number of flying insects for being up in the mountains. And while the trail runs by the river, everywhere you look there are signs saying that if you step off the trail, including trying to get closer to the river, it's private property and you can't. I don't begrudge whoever actually owns the land for owning it, but I wish some arrangement could have been worked out that involved more access and less passive-aggressive hostility. So I have a mix of nice pictures from a wonderful fall evening as well as a sense that some things could be better.

Wish we would have done more research on this place before stopping here to know that it's really not a "hike" and more of a walk. It's an old railroad bed, which is nice, but nothing fun and exciting about a truly "off-road" hike to this place. Also, the first ¾ of a mile is nasty and it's through houses, etc and nothing exciting. But after that, really from just before the Petticoat Junction to the north is beautiful and we were happy to finally come upon this area. The Jackson River is closer to the trail in this area and a beautiful stream to walk along. The banks of the trail in the first part, from the parking area in Covington to the Petticoat area are nasty and loaded with trash and pollution, the town of Covington or some volunteers really should clean it up and force the local residents to "police" their back yards better! Overall, we did it... won't waste time with it again.

Fishing opportunities abound, ranging from trout and bluegill to largemouth bass and channel catfish. Stroll the circumference of the trail around the lake while casting a line to take in nature's beauty on full display. Location: From the southern entrance to the park, travel five miles. The lake is just a few steps from the CCC Museum, the gift shop, and the park's office.

I would not recommend staying here. We were in cabin 20 and unfortunately had a lot of issues…read moreduring our stay. One of the biggest issues was a mouse that ran around the cabin, got on the counters, and was popping and contaminating our food. We were not warned about this beforehand (and I'm actually fine with mice and rats--I've had them as pets!), but because of this, we ended up losing much of our food. The AC unit also would not turn on. The cabin had no WiFi at all, and we couldn't connect to satellite, so we couldn't even call anyone for help. They also left by 5 p.m., leaving us with no way to contact anyone. As far as I could tell, there was nothing stating that there would be absolutely no WiFi in the cabin. I understand that the point of these cabins can be to disconnect, but there are still safety concerns with having no way to communicate. This became especially concerning when the AC wasn't working and then the power went out. The cabin became very warm and stuffy, we couldn't light a fire because of the heat, and there were no flashlights available. My partner ended up getting a cold. The power was out for about 12 hours, even though the storm had eased up much sooner. Another major safety concern was that there had apparently been a flood warning, but no one told us. We were staying at the bottom near the lake and saw how high the water had gotten when we went to ask for help with the AC in the morning. We only found out about the flood warning after we had already left, even though the warning had been active all night. At that point, we did not feel safe staying another night. We had planned to stay for three days, but ultimately had to leave that day. The property itself is beautiful and the people are nice, but there were also some other issues. The walls are extremely thin--I could hear my partner snoring from the couch through the sounds of the storm outside. For what I paid and based on the descriptions of the cabins, I expected a lot more, especially when it came to basic communication and safety.

A group of us came here for a weekend of fly fishing the Jackson River... This Inn sits on an 18…read morehole golf course, right on the banks of the Jackson River, so river access was easy, just a short walk from the Inn. The Inn offers all the amenities of a rental home (fully stocked kitchen with two fridges and two dishwashers, dishes, etc), large dining room table, plenty of seating and a couple of quiet rooms to relax. The bedrooms were large, there were at least 9 of them and each had their own full bath. Comfortable temperatures from their HVAC throughout the entire house. Overall, the Inn was a comfortable way to relax after a day of fishing. There was also a grill outside and a fire pit. The location is just about 10 mins from downtown Covington, not far from other fishing areas, like Lake Moomaw and the dam there. There's plenty of parking and they have an amazing restaurant onsite, a quick walk from the Inn that's highly recommended! I look forward to returning!!

While the property itself is vast with many things to enjoy and do, it was a bit shocking to see that many of the amenities did require extra fees, there were a few options to eat on the property for limited cost, which is a bit interesting since the room fee was already so much, with added activities fees etc. It is a stunning area however, lots of things to try between the hot springs, the golf course, archery, falconry, horse riding, a hike that is somehow gate kept? But they all do require an additional payment, some of which definitely gets a bit pricey. But it is a stunningly beautiful area with lots do to. The tennis court, lazy river and pool was free with our visit so that was nice to try and explore. There are limited food options that are inexpensive without driving a bit (driving anywhere is a bit hard as the valet can sometimes take up to an hour to bring out the car for some reason at times and you are not allowed to park yourself). Overall, great stay, but do prepare that your wallet may be a bit damaged.

We enjoyed walking around and seeing the families making s'mores and kids rolling down the grass hill. * spectacular banquet facilities for amazing weddings. * fun front porch traditions. What wasn't as great * extra charges add up. Valet parking, daily resort fees, charge for hiking (guide required) and adult pool (but family pool free) * small bathroom, with only a shower. * limited accommodation for late checkout. Luckily, our select guest status allowed our request to be accommodated, but before I mentioned that, the request was denied with such quickness that it seemed routine to do so. If you are looking for a luxury family resort vacation is southwestern Virginia, or love historic properties, you'll likely love the Homestead. If you prefer a more modern experience without add on expenses, it may not be right.

wow! what a terrific ride!…read more At the start, the guide demo'ed and had us try some fundamental riding techniques to make the ride safe and comfortable, and then led us on a 2+ hour trail ride suited to our interests and skill levels. She periodically asked about our comfort levels and what we wanted us to see, while pointing out things about the environment (such as a bear scrape on a tree). The trails were well-maintained, the views gorgeous and -- most importantly -- the horses seem contented, healthy and well cared for. Hoss and Charger were lovely horses and gentle for us beginners to ride. All in all, a fantastic and fun outing and a great way to experience time with beautiful horses in beautiful surroundings.
