We finally paid a visit to Snowshoe's Sporting Clays range after frequenting the sprawling resort…read morefor almost twenty years. It was both a fun and pleasant experience and we decided to do it again in the future, perhaps next year. Snowshoe Sporting Clays is located almost halfway between Silver Creek and the Snowshoe Lake, down a back road that alternates between gravel and pavement. The best way to get there is by the free Snowshoe Shuttle that is on call to drive customers there. Before going there, however, one has to have paid tickets that can be obtained at the Depot or by calling the Snowshoe reservation line. There are several variants to suit customers of every level of dexterity and time allowed, from static 25 targets at $29.00 to a mobile course of 50 targets costing $54.00. The range masters are totally professionally trained and take their time explaining both the shot gun course and best of all, safety. Myself coming from both a military and a Homeland Security background, it is a pleasure watching the range masters at work. The course is fairly small, as well kept as it could be, although the management neglect of the previous Snowshoe CEO (now hopefully exiled to some ski Gulag) is visible and extends throughout the entire resort, including the Sporting Clays. Overgrown bushes and poorly maintained buildings greet the visitor. Hopefully the new management will spend a modicum of resources to keep this as a wonderful experience to the visitor. The Sporting Clays is open from early May to early October, providing for a fairly long shooting season. After about twenty minutes of safety and instructions, we were ushered to the static stand for a five-shot practice before the launchers were activated. We did both the static launchers, which come from different angles and positions, as well as part of the woods course. To say it was fun is a gross understatement. It was a blast. One of the best things to do at Snowshoe during the summer season, period...

I love visiting Cass. It's quite the trek out to this part of WV, but it's worth it!…read more Cass Scenic Railroad State Park, as the name indicates, is both a state park and a heritage railroad. The park also includes the former company town of Cass, but for this review I'll focus on the railroading experience. Historically this railroad was used for logging, which is why the locomotives you see here will look a little different than the typical steam train. Most of the engines that pull and push trains here today are Shays, which are geared steam locomotives. To keep it simple: these engines are designed to slowly and steadily climb steep grades without slipping and sliding on the track (while standard locomotives are made to steadily zip along relatively level tracks). These unique engines are why the drive to Cass is worth it: because you'll get to ride in a train being pushed or pulled up and down the mountains of West Virginia. There's nothing quite like it! That said, I definitely have tips for first timers. One: earplugs. The coaches used for these trains are not 100% enclosed; they're actually historic converted log cars. That means there is absolutely nothing to muffle the sound of your train's whistle. (I can't believe I have to say this, but: trains are loud!) And two: layers. The weather as you climb the mountain is not going to be the same as the weather in the railroad parking lot. At a minimum it's going to be chillier. During one of my visits it was actually rain pouring at the summit that the engine took us too, but it stayed clear and sunny down below - so much so that I came back to a completely dry car. Don't forget to go into the museum to read about the town of Cass during your visit; it adds so much historical context and makes the whole experience that much more special. Just be sure that you don't miss your train!

If you enjoy trains and coal powered steam engines this could be a trip for you. The best part of the trip was getting to the Bald Knob overlook. View is very nice. Also on the way down the mountain you stop at a logging camp to take a look at how the workers lived - you had to be a hardy and tough individual to have worked in the logging business. This trip is "not" something I would do again but it was a way to experience how difficult working in the outdoor resource business really was! If you enjoy trains this might be for you. It was 4.5 hours of smoke, whistle's and clanking track,

I would not recommend staying here. We were in cabin 20 and unfortunately had a lot of issues…read moreduring our stay. One of the biggest issues was a mouse that ran around the cabin, got on the counters, and was popping and contaminating our food. We were not warned about this beforehand (and I'm actually fine with mice and rats--I've had them as pets!), but because of this, we ended up losing much of our food. The AC unit also would not turn on. The cabin had no WiFi at all, and we couldn't connect to satellite, so we couldn't even call anyone for help. They also left by 5 p.m., leaving us with no way to contact anyone. As far as I could tell, there was nothing stating that there would be absolutely no WiFi in the cabin. I understand that the point of these cabins can be to disconnect, but there are still safety concerns with having no way to communicate. This became especially concerning when the AC wasn't working and then the power went out. The cabin became very warm and stuffy, we couldn't light a fire because of the heat, and there were no flashlights available. My partner ended up getting a cold. The power was out for about 12 hours, even though the storm had eased up much sooner. Another major safety concern was that there had apparently been a flood warning, but no one told us. We were staying at the bottom near the lake and saw how high the water had gotten when we went to ask for help with the AC in the morning. We only found out about the flood warning after we had already left, even though the warning had been active all night. At that point, we did not feel safe staying another night. We had planned to stay for three days, but ultimately had to leave that day. The property itself is beautiful and the people are nice, but there were also some other issues. The walls are extremely thin--I could hear my partner snoring from the couch through the sounds of the storm outside. For what I paid and based on the descriptions of the cabins, I expected a lot more, especially when it came to basic communication and safety.

wow! what a terrific ride!…read more At the start, the guide demo'ed and had us try some fundamental riding techniques to make the ride safe and comfortable, and then led us on a 2+ hour trail ride suited to our interests and skill levels. She periodically asked about our comfort levels and what we wanted us to see, while pointing out things about the environment (such as a bear scrape on a tree). The trails were well-maintained, the views gorgeous and -- most importantly -- the horses seem contented, healthy and well cared for. Hoss and Charger were lovely horses and gentle for us beginners to ride. All in all, a fantastic and fun outing and a great way to experience time with beautiful horses in beautiful surroundings.

The counselors are really nice and supportive. They are there if you need anything and help make you feel at home. I made friends with the other campers there, and we can't wait to go back next year. I liked the cabins - they're cozy and the beds are comfortable. If you have any food allergies, like you're gluten-free, dairy-free, or sugar-free, they accommodate that and will have food options for you. They have dance parties on Friday nights, movies on Saturday nights, and the other nights are just as fun with other activities, like sing-alongs or they'll have "Cabin Nights" where you do fun stuff with your cabin, like baking or making bracelets. It's a good idea to stay for at least two weeks for your first summer. I highly recommend it!

Massive disappointment. I have gone to this camp for many years, and the way camp was managed this…read moreyear was unacceptable. People were refused Covid tests unless they had 3 or more symptoms, EVEN WITH HIGH FEVERS. My friend got sick with what they called the "camp cold." They had a high fever and were coughing, but they were refused Covid tests or basic medication beyond a very limited supply of cough drops, as they camp somehow only had one bag. One bag. For a camp of over 150. They were then left in the cabin, which had heavy insulation and a non-functional fan. Because of this, the cabin got very hot during the day and they were left to melt inside. After camp, I learned that their parents had received NOTHING informing them that their child was sick and miserable. Their were also many cases of Covid (though their were most likely more that had not been tested) . This camp costs several thousand dollars to go to and I cannot comprehend how they were lacking so many basic necessities. I will not be returning next year, and I do not recommend sending your kids here.
