For such a large student population the gym surprisingly is never too busy. I can always get my workout in with the machines and weights I want. They have many cardio machines from ellipticals to treadmills and have dumbbells going up to 110lbs with several benches. It's annoying that not all of the benches can change positions as some are fixed and therefore only useful for certain exercises. I love that there are four squat racks with free barbells. There is also a Smith machine if you prefer that. The gym has ample plates to add to bars and other machines. They have cable machines as well as any other machine you could want to complete your exercise. There is a stretching/abs area as well as two rooms with wooden floors. The locker room is clean but fairly small with only two benches for getting ready but it is never busy when I've been there. There's no soap or anything in the showers so make sure to bring your own. Also, bring your own towels as they don't have free ones there and make you pay 75 cents to rent one! This gym also has a pool but I have never used it.

Finally found a gym I like after Gold's closed. This is the gym right next to the Darden School of…read moreBusiness. Free for UVA students and free parking after 5pm! $1/hour before 5pm. Pros: -Lots of squat racks. Even if it gets crowded, the wait is not long. -Cubbies at the entrance to put your stuff. -Good service. Staff members are always friendly and helpful! -There are lots of mirrors around the weights area so you can check your form. -Equipment is relatively new and well-maintained Cons: -Parking becomes scarce after around 6pm. -Gym gets pretty crowded after 6pm, as well. -The dumbbells area is way too cramped. Enough dumbbells, but not quite enough space given the amount of people using the area. I've decided to stick with this gym after a long time of gym shopping. Not a fan of the parking or the crowdedness after 6pm, but it has everything I need and the wait is not too long. Turnover rate high.

A very weird experience in a very nice gym. first, the good news: the ACAC location is clean,…read morewell-maintained and has everything anybody wants in a workout. I visited upstairs and did the elliptical, some free weights and a leg press. all worked great. I was disappointed to learn that ACAC as a multi-location workout facility doesn't have a membership tier that is inclusive for temporary/non-residents. it's either, you buy a one-time pass for $25; a three-day one; or a full monthly. nothing in between. Charlottesville itself is known for having a very transient, ever-changing population so this policy doesn't make sense to me. When I was there, some weirdo was on the stairclimber making this god-awful coughing noise about every 10 seconds. look, I know everyone has their workout quirks but spreading your germs around knowingly (in the age of airborne viruses like COVID) is a bad idea. I brought it to the attention of the desk attendant and she did not seem particularly phased by the news. ACAC Downtown is within walking distance of my flat/crashpad so I will go back. but I'm just hoping they either bring back the punch card or institute a program for non-residents to make life a bit easier.

I started at ACAC from PT and I did not continue after my 60 days. It is a very dirty facility…read more You see women cleaning all the time but I don't know what they are doing. The women's locker room is disgusting, it smells and there is hair all over the floor and on the shower walls and floor. The hot tub is dirty too. The locker room is way over due for an overhaul. The lockers are dirty and don't get cleaned out ever. It doesn't make sense to have kids in the women's locker room either. Have a family area for changing clothes. Also, the pool is always overrun by kids and it's loud. Terrible gym don't waste your time or money.
