Despite being VERY muddy (everywhere is muddy right now because of all of the rain and snow!), it was absolutely awesome. As soon as we arrived at the dog park area at Chris Greene, which is a short and pretty walk through the woods from the parking area, Otis went NUTS! There's a ton of space to romp, and I think the dogs really love the added fun of dodging in and out of the many trees. I've never seen Otis run so much at a dog park, and despite the cold and ice on the lake he jumped right in. This place will be perfect when the weather is warmer and the dogs really want to swim! It also offers what no other dog parks have: total shade, which will come in handy in July and August! I did get a little turned around leaving the park - there are two paths and I couldn't remember which one we came in on. I took the wrong one, but it just took me on a pleasant little loop before arriving back at the parking area. For the direct exit, take the path on the right. I also think it's important to note that this park is big and your pooch can get pretty far away from you at any given time. I try to stay pretty close to my guy just in case he encounters a grumpy-pants-pup, and that feels pretty hard to do here. Still, like most dog parks around town, the owners were all pretty keyed into their dogs behaviors and we didn't have any problems.

Fortunately she had a name tag with phone number and we got her back that night. If they don't fix the fence you need to stay right with your dog, which defeats the purpose of the park.

They are well maintained, go uphill in some areas, flat in others, skirt a small creek, a large pond with turtles, fish, ducks & geese, lots of marked trees & meadows, all good distractions for big & little hikers.

Traversing an overlook over the river, I went down into a valley, spotting majestic birds of prey, a large fish, energetic baby turtles, singing frogs, and a snake, all spotted in less than an hour. As wildlife preserves go, this one had a lot of wildlife. Conditions vary of course, but there were a couple more hours worth of trails I didn't get to. Near the entrance were some buildings, including a water station and primitive bathrooms. People seemed to come for a variety of reasons.

Nestled in the heart of the Cumberland State Forest in central Virginia, activities in this park…read more(which is managed by Virginia State Parks) are centered around the 40-acre lake. We camped in this park for three nights in late April 2022; our stay included two weekday and one Friday night. There are three campgrounds in the park ... the Acorn Loop, which is lakeside and intended more for tent camping and Black Oak and Chestnut Loops, which are for larger RVs. Both of the latter campgrounds were closed for construction activities. Being lakeside, sites on the Acorn Loop, were very peaceful and relaxing though they are quite close to each other. Each site had a picnic table, fire ring, and a pole for a lantern. Only two sites were occupied during our Wednesday and Thursday night stay; there was about 70% occupancy on the Friday night but it was still relatively quiet. The bathhouse/showers were well-maintained. There is access to park trails directly from the campground. There are also a lodge and cabins available to rent. The park offers a boat launch, fishing pier, boat rentals, beach area/(unguarded) swimming, a snack bar, picnic shelter, playground, and an archery range. Some of these activities are seasonal. For instance, the snack bar and boat rentals were closed in late April. The park is also a great place to do some hikes. The Trail Guide is available at the Contact Station or online. There are a number of hiking trails in the park that are rated easy or moderate. We did the Lakeside Trail (easy, 1.52 miles), the Channel Cat Loop (moderate 1.78 miles), and some shorter connector trails. There are two short trails, Otter (0.16 mi) and Coyote (0.07 mi), which are handicap accessible. The park is also adjacent to state forest, which offers the 14-mile Cumberland Multi-use Trail, which is shared by hikers, bikers, and equestrians. Finally, there is some wi-fi availability in the park, primarily in the beach and campground areas.

The store has some merchandise and a snack bar. Also there is a game room with some video games and 2 pool tables. Outside the store is mini golf. They recently built a pool which is real nice. Not sure if it is heated but it was warmer than the lake. Next to the pool is a playground.

I counted 6 shelters too so I imagine in spring /summer it gets used a lot. They have porta potties and a 2-stall bathroom for women & a bathroom for men too. Hand washing station outside. We came during the week of October 13th & the foliage was beautiful.

People were waiting for us to get our kayaks out at the end of the trip. Highly recommend! They even emailed me a picture of us kayaking on the river, that a bystander took.
