Found this gem after our river tubing adventure got postponed due to high water levels and can't say I was upset about it - this is such a neat little hidden park in Charlottesville. It has its own "beach," its own dock (lots of fun can be had on that dock!) - bring your speaker, floats, coolers, a few towels, your refreshments, and get those super cool dive moves in action! We were also told that there was a fee to get in (something like $5) but when we got there, we were surprised to see that we could enjoy this lovely lake for free, so bonus points! Really nice spot if you're looking for a chill day.

Chris Greene is a large Albemarle County Park in The northern section of the county. It has multiple activities available. Groups can rent shelters, hike the trails, enjoy the swimming beach (with lifeguards), kayak in Chris Greene Lake or fish with a non-gasoline engine. The park also has a large dog park with lake access. We typically use the trails and have used the dog park in the past. The dog park is hit or miss. There are unattentive owners at times who don't watch their dog or pick up after them. I have seen a tussle or two that require mediation. We obviously like it when they park if empty and our dog can run off leash without others around. Our more recent pups have not been water dogs do the lake doesn't sway me. With that being said, I am taking off a star due to the seemingly chronic algae issues that plague the lake. It seems to be closed off often from swimmers, fishermen (and women). There is a per car fee to use the park between Memorial Day and Labor Day. If you work for the county you can be admitted free.

    Huge dog park

Huge enclosed dog park with a beach for the pups to play in the water. A terrific find so we will be back next time we are in the area camping. It is $3 per person admission and the dog park is not easily found the sign is tiny.

From what I've seen it's a pretty generous amount of space for your dog to play, swim, and wander within a safe proximity.

This park used to be our neighborhood park. We lived just down the road, so when my husband and I…read morefirst moved to the neighborhood, we would walk down and intersect with the Rivanna River trail which goes through Azalea park. Or we would loop around the garden plots that are down there at the far end of the park and see what folks were growing. Or we would go use the big spread of grass to throw the frisbee around. The playground is pretty cool, too. (Admittedly, around sunset when the kiddies had all gone in for dinner and bath time, we'd utilize the freedom and play on some of the playground equipment--lots of exciting things you can spin on/in!) Kid (and "big kid") approved. Then we had a baby, so I would stroll the babe down to the park and loop around the park's paths and back home, or I would sit on a swing and hold my babe and swing with him for a bit. Ah, the circle of life. Now we've moved and I already kinda miss Azalea Park. (Note: There's also a dog park; just a fairly large gated in area of grass where you can let your dog off the leash.)

We bring our sheepdog Appa here at least once a week when the weather is cool/cold enough for him, less often in the summer (Charlottesville's summer heat is pretty brutal on our fluff monster). In all of our visits we've only run into a few dogs that aren't very well socialized and are aggressive towards other dogs (we've encountered this multiple times at Darden Towe). For the most part all of the owners are very responsible, friendly, and approachable and their dogs follow their example. There are always tennis balls laying around that are up for grabs, several picnic tables for humans (and sometimes for dogs to climb on), poop bags/trash cans, and water bowls (and a pump to fill them). Overall it has just about everything you could need. The one major downside about Azalea's dog park is that it has very little shade. There's a single large tree on the west side that casts some decent shade in the evening during the summer, but for the most part the sun scorches down and there's no hiding from it. It would be fantastic if the town could plant a few more trees here. There's plenty of parking, and trails and a stream nearby. Appa's a better socialized dog thanks to Azalea. We're very glad we found this park.

Preddy Creek Trails Park - We didn't see any horses, but barely avoided stepping on what they left behind!

The topography varies, and the meadow near the parking lot is markedly distinct from the valley in which the actual creek lies. One suspension bridge crosses the creek and it was in quite good condition, but it could also be crossed on foot, or on hoof as this is a horse area. There were several miles of trails and I was worn out enough that I did only a fraction of them, but they were quite pleasant. Various signage suggested this parking lot was a spot for thieves despite the rural location; I suppose it is a highbrow crowd that would be parking here. It also suggests that anytime your shoe leaves a mark the trail is too wet to walk, which if taken literally is kind of ridiculous. Fortunately, if you lock your car and make your own decisions about mud, you can have a good experiences.

Unfortunately, it was extremely cold and windy and we didn't have bug spray, so we didn't get didn't get too adventurous. For these reasons, we tried the easiest trail--the Meadow Loop Trail. It was an easy loop around a grassy area, took maybe less than 10 minutes. There was a very detailed map at the entrance of the trails. This included all the available trails, the level of difficulty for each trail, basic etiquette, friendly reminders, etc. There was also a reminder that everyone needs to watch out for each other --hikers, bikers and horse riders. We didn't see any horses, but we did try to dodge the "presents" they left behind. We did see some bikers returning from the trail. There was a large parking lot, which most likely fills up when the weather is nicer. Cameras are watching the parking lot, but it's always best to lock cars and hide valuables :). There were bathrooms available, but not the type with running water....if you get what I mean! Would I return? Can't say for sure since it's pretty far.

Preddy Creek Trails Park - We chose to do the easy meadow trails for the sake of time .....and because of the insane wind and cold!
