If we are ever in the area, we will definitely stay here again!

Hot tubs sitting with a view of the river is a bonus. If you are into kayaking or taking in the local fare this is the perfect place. Lewisburg is only 20 minutes away and there is great coffee, wings and pizza. The staff and owners are the best. They will drop you off with your kayaks and take your vehicle back to the campground. Yes there are trains on the other side of the river, but it only adds character to the location. Cellphone service and internet access is intermittent, another plus in my opinion, it lets us get away from work and spend quality time together. We were in the area visiting Smooth Ambler distillery and we were happy to find so much to do within an hour drive. When you first pull in, the check-in area doubles as an outdoor adventure company's post. I assume it's the same owner. The kayaks and canoes are over to the side and would've been totally tempting had it not have been like 40 degrees and rainy when we were there. This was unlike any campground that I'd ever been to before. It's privately owned and most of the sites were already occupied by the seasonal RVs, whose occupants weren't even there. There was one other RV that had an actual person camping. We were in site 24, which was the first site that wasn't seasonally occupied. The pad was narrow, but there were parking spots parallel from the road. The parking spots made good back in opportunities. With full hookups and cable tv, I would consider and did consider this as a favorable campground. The downside... this campground runs between a busy road and a river. On the other side of the river is a train track. If you're looking for tranquility and not use to the sound of passing cars and random trains, then this isn't the place for you. The bathhouse was quite new and you could tell that it wasn't often occupied. In addition to the RV sites, there were tent/popup sites as well as cabins... heck, you can even rent an RV that includes a hot tub.

As a dad, planning this kind of trip comes with a lot of moving parts... and a little bit of overthinking. Thankfully, Twin River Outfitters made it all easy. Robert gave us a great orientation and walked us through the whole course like seasoned river guides (which we definitely are not). We booked the glamping tents and took full advantage of their kitchen box, firewood, and luggage service--which meant we could have an awesome adventure without needing a crash course in ultralight backpacking. It was a perfect balance of the outdoors and just enough comfort to keep everyone smiling.

This area is known for the lake and for boating and outdoor recreation, so I understand that coming during a colder time probably put a slight damper on everything that should be taken with a grain of salt if you're reading this review. When we arrived there was no one in the office. It felt closed off and unattended. I wasn't able to go up into the lighthouse at all, which was super disappointing because for me it was the main draw. From the outside, the lighthouse was lovely to look at but I was really really hoping to be able to climb to the top. The rest of the grounds looked fine and this is definitely a place designed for overnight stays. I would definitely return but during the right season and when I am able to explore the lighthouse!

The gift shop has a large selection of items just in case you forgot something or need a souvenir. There is a large community firepit and pavilion with Adirondack chairs. Each full hookup site also has it's own firepit with chairs. The property is well maintained. Make sure you take a walk to the hammock area...this was the kids favorite part! We already booked a trip back for next year and cannot wait to spend more time in WV.

We discovered it last year by chance taking up a canceled spot with friends on Labor day, and returned this year the week before Memorial day. There is a significant difference between the place when in full capacity - obviously noise, crowd, and jet ski traffic on the lake. Also seems to be in transition from privately operated to state owned - when we visited this year none of the Marina services were operating which forces you to drive back to the nearest WV store for necessities such as ice etc. The facilities (shower, restrooms) were relatively clean (if you don't mind the crawlers, occasional mouse running across) but this was mainly for a lightly occupied camp, as mentioned above and indeed during the labor day weekend they were in much worst condition. So if you are geared for self sufficiency and pick an off time this is one of the most beautiful sites in VA, with an unbeatable cost/benefit ratio for a tranquil and relaxing vacation.

There are about five camp grounds here with each one allowing enough space for ten camping sites. There are camp sites both on and off the water and each site has a fire pit/cooking area. The exterior sites on the water are amazing! You have an incredible view, your own beach area and a lot of privacy. The interior sites are larger close to the bathroom/showers, but don't offer much of a view or privacy, but like I said, they are very spacious. This could have been a five-star review, but the person who runs this camp area was super rude to us one of the nights. Sooo, you're supposed to turn off your generator by 10pm, but ours was still going by 10:30pm and she let us have it! This was our first offense and we didn't know about the curfew. Take it easy Zelda! I would definitely be into another camping trip here possibly in the fall. I think I like camping now?!

The drive over to the start of our day trip was pleasant in an air conditioned van and the guide driving us pointed out baby deer and an eagle's nest which was awesome. The canoeing day itself was beautiful and the trip was just the right length for us. There were four adults in our group-- I think with kids you would want to ask for a closer drop off point because it was a LOT of paddling. The canoes were nice and they helped us carry them down to the launch point and gave us a run down of the rapids we would pass which was helpful to avoid overly shallow or rocky areas. We were the only ones canoeing that day which was so nice! I would love to do this again in the fall when the leaves are changing!
