It is free and has multiple entry points. On the downside, Covington is dominated by a cardboard manufacturer. I just moved from another place that had a similar factory, but for those without such experience, something involved in this industry smells strongly of wet dog, and the smell spreads widely. So at least on part of this trail, you've got that to contend with as well as a surprising number of flying insects for being up in the mountains. And while the trail runs by the river, everywhere you look there are signs saying that if you step off the trail, including trying to get closer to the river, it's private property and you can't. I don't begrudge whoever actually owns the land for owning it, but I wish some arrangement could have been worked out that involved more access and less passive-aggressive hostility. So I have a mix of nice pictures from a wonderful fall evening as well as a sense that some things could be better.

Coming here was absolute happenstance, just looking up if there was a hot spring in Virginia and there was. And I found this amazing Bed and breakfast that was affordable, comfortable, and dog friendly. Our entire stay felt like something out of a story book. A babbling brook in the back, a delightful square to explore, flowers, fields, breakfast with fresh juice fruit and coffee delivered to our room every morning. Bathing under the stars and sleeping under them too. What an amazing long weekend. Bear our border collie was welcomed with open arms, he was so comfortable the entire stay. He enjoyed the accommodations and romping in the fields (and drinking from the creek, I wouldn't recommend doing that yourself.) Our whole stay was stunning. I truly came in with an open mind and they blew my mind. What a hidden treasure.

wow! what a terrific ride!…read more At the start, the guide demo'ed and had us try some fundamental riding techniques to make the ride safe and comfortable, and then led us on a 2+ hour trail ride suited to our interests and skill levels. She periodically asked about our comfort levels and what we wanted us to see, while pointing out things about the environment (such as a bear scrape on a tree). The trails were well-maintained, the views gorgeous and -- most importantly -- the horses seem contented, healthy and well cared for. Hoss and Charger were lovely horses and gentle for us beginners to ride. All in all, a fantastic and fun outing and a great way to experience time with beautiful horses in beautiful surroundings.

My wife and I got engaged at the Hummingbird Inn back in June 2014. We found it online and knew it…read morewas the perfect place for a romantic and special occasion kinda weekend. Fast forward ten years later and here we are, back at the Hummingbird Inn celebrating our 10 year engagement anniversary. In the past ten years, we have traveled far and wide, to hotels, restaurants, national parks and overseas. We had no idea what to expect about the Hummingbird Inn after being to so many places since than. Once we arrived, the Hummingbird Inn was not only just as romantic as we remember, but even better than we remember. There is just something about this place that is so serene and peaceful; the details that go into every room and feature are spectacular. This by far is the best place to rekindle the fire with that special someone. As for the location, the inn is located in a small secluded mountain town with a nearby train that passes by once a day, which added to the quaint romantic atmosphere. You can easily explore the Shenandoah and come back to enjoy a nice bottle of wine on the deck or their newly designed gazebo, built by the owners themselves. The jetted tub in the Alleghany room is still one of the nicest tubs that we have ever had. The new owners, Sandra and Jeff, have done an amazing job at maintaining and adding to this beautiful bed and breakfast. Sandra, with a hospitality background, is a very bubbly, friendly and gracious host, giving you a list of things to do in the area. Jeff, with a carpentry background, maintains everything beautifully. Each of their breakfasts were delicious and super accommodating in terms of dietary restrictions. For instance, I wanted plant based meat instead of real meat and they accommodated that request. They even acknowledged our anniversary by giving us some complimentary soap that they sold exclusively at the inn. In addition to soap, they also provide the purchase of their linens, some of the best linens that you will ever experience. We are very thankful to have returned to our little piece of heaven after all these years. Thanks to Sandra and Jeff, our piece of romantic paradise still exists to this day and has many years to go. We plan to celebrate every milestone anniversary at the Hummingbird Inn...no matter what or where life takes us.

When we checked in, the young receptionist gave us the details and made a displeased fave when she said which house we were assigned to - the Jail House. The Jail House ended up being fine but I didn't like the room. First off, the buildings aren't labeled and it's not clear where the front door is located which is incredibly annoying. Second, there is a big chandelier above the bed - so close that you can touch it with your hand and tall people can hit it. I was worried that it would fall right on our torsos.. Third, the sheets had some stains on them. Fourth, you can hear people entering and exiting the house. And they can hear you so you cant even speak in a normal tone. Finally, the place appears clean from a distance but has a lot of cracks where bugs can come from. The only thing it had going for it was that the bathroom was modern. What really frustrated me was that when we checked in the receptionist gave us all the information about dinner time and location but didn't tell us they were all booked up that evening. We checked in at 3 and dinner time was at 5. We waited for dinner service to start and went down to the restaurant on site only to be told that there was no availability. And of course there are limited establishments in the area so we ate at a dingy place nearby. The hotel restaurant had plenty of seats...we saw when we returned and before we left. Never coming back here again.
