Rude and dirty! Restrooms are Not well kept, sites are not level or even close to being level, just rocks and dirt. overall, poorly maintained.

Tubing

We rented a camper for 4 days. The grounds and facilities are really nice for it's age. Staff is friendly. The camper we stayed in was very used. Floor was soft, cabinet door broken, screen door broken, some lights not working. Other than the camper itself we had a good time. Camper was not worth the price we paid per night.

Off to tube the river.

I've stayed here many times - and we keep coming back! The sites are affordable and there is so much to do - tubing (bring your own or rent for $10), karaoke on Fridays, DJ on Saturdays, bunnies everywhere, playground, fishing pond (no license needed), hot tubs, pool, mini golf. The people working there are always friendly and helpful. As others said, the sites are really close together. This is a family campground, so lots of kids. If you prefer remote camping, this might not be the spot for you. Even with all the "closeness," the campground is quiet after 11:00 and doesn't start bustling until 8:00 or 9:00 am. You can tent, bring your RV, rent a cabin or an RV. We always enjoy our stay!

Spent a weekend here with the family (+dog) in May 2021, we had a great time! I did not give it 5 stars because the sites were close together and tight (we have a 23' travel trailer and GMC Sierra) and there weren't many places to hike around. Other then that I highly recommend this campground. Great weather, pool was amazing and kids really enjoyed the playgrounds and bunnies! Bathrooms were well kept and we had ice cream from the general store, delicious!

Best camping ever!!

This is the second year we came back for my younger son's birthday (he is 6 now) I love this park because is: 1.- Not expensive 2.- River and waterfall are incredible. Water is cold even when is 100 degrees. 3.- Staff are always friendly. 4.- Showers and restrooms are always well maintained and clean. 5.- Alcohol is permitted but you can't make noise after the curfew of 11 PM (and they reinforce this) 6.- Pool is OK, but the hot tubs are great!!! 7.- We watched the world soccer cup games in the Gameroom. 8.- Camp sites are big enough for 2 tents and 2 cars. 9.- Picnic table and a fire pit are a plus, but no grill at all, bring yours... Definitely a family oriented campground. If you don't like kids, don't bother coming here and rent yourself a cabin in the middle of nowhere. But if you like kids, like us, it's perfect, hear them yell and laugh when they ride their bikes and swing in the river, or when they are roasting marshmallows by the fire... that is priceless. I will gave them 5 stars but I was shut off at 11 PM, I was too noisy but that is me. I will definitively be coming back next year, but this time I will take camp sites F11 and F12 so nobody complaint about my loud laughing...

Queen bed- more comfortable than you would think! RU #2

Cabin was really small with very little storage and beds were hard. It was fun for a weekend, but I prefer the solitude of a private cabin.

Our site was large, shaded and best of all level. No leveling blocks needed. Sites are gravel, clean and well maintained. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful! Well stocked store, and they will make and deliver pizza right to your campsite. Typical KOA amenities, and they have a stocked catch and release pond on site for those who love to fish. Lots of activities for the kiddos, too. The road in is a little hilly and several curves, but big rigs shouldn't have any trouble navigating it - the signage on the road is great (funny sign on the road that said "1/2 miles Don't Give Up." Lol). We're more "state park people" in that we enjoy the space and solitude and we don't have kids traveling with us (just dogs), so we don't typically need all the on-site activities. But this week we needed full hook ups, and this park gave us that feel. With so much to do in the area, we didn't get to it all, so we'll be back and we'll definitely stay here again.

It is better to get there by day. It is off the road a bit. You have to park at a stop sign and…read morewalk up a hill to reach the office to check in. The dog park is very small. Lots of larger gravel. The only lighting after dark they had was some that came on as I walked by them attached to trees. We were surrounded by forest so it was kind of scary being out there at 9 in the pitch black. There are lots of weeds that give the dogs briars in their feet. They have a trail you can go on that was nice but after 20mins my dog was ready to turn around. I never found out where that would have taken me lol. That was really the safest bet for walking him. There is many large rocks there. There isn't much grass. The pond is tiny.

On 6/8, I awoke to find my camper surrounded by water. The water had pushed debris up against and under my camper. Almost everything outside on my "patio" area had been washed away. The campground employee said, "We were waiting for you to get up". In addition, the same employee said, "This is the third time this has happened". After I was able to get my camper to my RV service provider, I was informed the camper had water damage. This water damage resulted in the total loss of my camper. I was shocked, and am still grieving the loss of my camper. I took great care with it and had always felt safer in a private campground vs other options. I always thought Walnut Hills Campground would look out for me while I stayed there, but this was not the case. I still cannot believe they just watched the water rise around my camper and did absolutely nothing to try to warn me before or during this event. They could have tried to call or text to warn me, but they did not. Based on this experience, it appears Walnut Hills Campground has very serious infrastructure and procedural problems. Specifically, the drainage in and around sites 104, 105, 106 and 109 thru 117. There are creeks that will not drain properly during any level of rainfall. In addition, this water that backs up will cause road closures within the campground potentially preventing egress from some areas of the campground. They also do not have any warning system in place to warn campers of rising water. A campground employee told me it was safe to drive through some of the roads covered in water because she had driven her golf cart through it and it was, "okay". Photos attached with this review were taken after water began to recede.

The drive over to the start of our day trip was pleasant in an air conditioned van and the guide driving us pointed out baby deer and an eagle's nest which was awesome. The canoeing day itself was beautiful and the trip was just the right length for us. There were four adults in our group-- I think with kids you would want to ask for a closer drop off point because it was a LOT of paddling. The canoes were nice and they helped us carry them down to the launch point and gave us a run down of the rapids we would pass which was helpful to avoid overly shallow or rocky areas. We were the only ones canoeing that day which was so nice! I would love to do this again in the fall when the leaves are changing!

Water was low but still fun.

We stayed at campsites 30, 31, and 32, which are at one end of the campground and feel more secluded, farther away from the other campsites. This means your car is not right next to your site, but we didn't mind walking back and forth (slightly uphill, along a path); we recently bought a collapsible utility wagon that was super helpful in carrying big things to and from the site. The sites sit higher above the river, so it's a bit steep if you want to go down and enjoy the water, but you can do so carefully and it's well worth it. You will love sitting by your fire, listening to the rushing river and feeling like you're in the middle of nowhere, even though many luxuries like flush toilets, hot showers, and even a camp store are just steps away. No need to bring ice or firewood; the camp provides them at an added reasonable cost (but bring an axe to help break up the logs in case the wood is damp or fresh). Bring a grill-top for the firepit if you plan to cook. Keep in mind that the campsites are not very large; ask AJ when you book if your tent will fit. There's plenty to do in the area: Hike Crabtree Falls, taste beers at Devil's Backbone or Blue Mountain Breweries, enjoy ciders at Bold Rock, and next time we'll try the distilleries. Crabtree Falls is definitely my favorite campground in all of Virginia!
