It is a beautiful 100 year old dining car with tables right at the huge picture windows and big comfy movable chairs. It has a private restroom as well. Lunch was served in the parlor car (no need to wobble your way to another car) on the way up to the falls, and was a cold buffet of roast beef, pastrami, cheeses, tomatoes, lettuce, garden salad, grilled chicken for the salad, potato salad, rolls, and drinks. All of this was followed up with a delicious piece of pie and a glass of wine on our way back down to Elkins. The Parlor Car host, Chase, was personable, attentive, and overall outstanding! The scenery was beautiful and High Falls are quite spectacular. Mary, the historian, did a wonderful job telling us all about the history of the train, the towns, and the landmarks along the ride. I would 100% recommend this trip if you find yourself near Elkins, WV.

Sat in the Parlor Car and had the pleasure to be served by Chase: very attentive, personable and went above and beyond for a few of our requests. The trains themselves were restored beautifully and quite comfortable and little did I know we would have the best seat in the house: right behind the diesel that got repositioned ( hubby is the train expert; forgive my probable incorrect recall and terminology!) Views were absolutely stunning, and exactly why these trips book up months in advance, particularly for the fall colors. Great narration by Mary as stated above, with lots of interesting information, not just related to trains. The highlight was the stop at the Falls- gorgeous and lucky there was rain recently so there just wasn't just a trickle! Lots of time to check it out before our return trip back. Met Stretch and Terry as well-- outstanding employees who truly care about giving the passengers an excellent experience. Food on our car was a make your own sandwich spread: roast beef was excellent but my one request is that they offer non red meat choices (like chicken) as my husband does not eat red meat (thank you to Chase for going to another car so my husband could have chicken for his sandwich). Gift shop as well at the depot. This being our fifth train ride in as many days, this was definitely THE BEST all around.

The lady at the counter in the museum was helpful and pleasant. Beth was our Parlor Car hostess. She attended to our every need and more. Her descriptions of the scenery were helpful. The lunch she served was beyond our expectations. The announcements over the loud speaker for all the cars regarding scenery were helpful. The High Falls stop was beautiful. If you don't have children under the age of 12 and can reserve the Parlor Car, I highly recommend it. The décor was great. The restroom was convenient in the same car. Our return trip allowed us to watch the back of the train move through the tunnel and around the bends. We stayed at the Hampton Inn in Elkins which was a great hotel with a wonderful view. Dinner at Maggies in downtown Elkins made our whole experience memorable.

The staff were…read morehelpful and friendly and the seating upstairs comfortable (I'm 6'4", and sometimes that's an issue). When we were seated, we were offered a drink and a bag of potato chips. After that, they handed out the boxed lunches we had pre-ordered. We each had the veggie wrap. We both thought it was outstanding. Because of the large bag of chips we had just had, we each ate only half of our wraps and took the other half home for dinner. I was impressed with the flavor, freshness and quality of the wrap. It came with a very good pasta salad and a chocolate brownie (excellent). The beverage service was well done, with staff coming by periodically to offer drink refills. A variety of soft drinks and coffee were complimentary throughout the ride. And we got to take our glass home as a souvenir. The ride itself is scenic for part of the way. Leaving Staunton out into the countryside did involve a fairly long stretch where there were trees on both sides, but you couldn't see into the distance. Then things opened up. There was periodic recorded commentary about the history of the area, about trains and some about the mountains and other sites we passed. Halfway through the trip, we stopped and they explained that half of us in the dome needed to get our things and go downstairs for a few minutes so they could reverse all of the seats (so we wouldn't be riding backwards on the trip back.). That process seemed to take over 20 minutes (a long time), but it did make the outside viewing on the trip back much more enjoyable. The ticket isn't cheap, but it's a good experience, the staff are nice and hardworking and the food (what we ordered) was quite good. If you are looking for a train ride with incredible views, you likely would prefer the Amtrak options, including between Denver and Emeryville, CA. But this is a pleasant diversion for a few hours. We went mid-April. I suspect the experience is different in the fall and at other times of the year.

I would highly recommend for a date night or any celebration. The bourbons were distinct enough but nothing that you can't pick up at the ABC. So if you're thinking you'll be getting a pour of some "lottery picks" think again. Before going again, I would research and see if they would be different, but would definitely go again. From where we live I would probably take the Staunton trip just to get different scenery.
