If you like gravel biking, the Greenbrier River Trail is a short bike ride from the house and if you don't have your own, there's a rental/shuttle service in town at the one and only traffic light. We have ridden in October and saw a couple of bears on the ride. We also rode in the spring and didn't see any but Ann said she saw one while walking the trail with their baby. No issues with them though. I def want to visit again but we've had a couple of health issue that put our Wanders (and waders) on hold.

Had a really nice stay here - big room, very clean and well appointed. Quiet location, friendly staff, and a good value. Will stay here again on my next trip to the area. It wasn't obvious how to make a reservation on their website (but I'm a bit of a Luddite) - but Expedia website worked for making arrangements. Like I said - highly recommend these lodgings.

I'm glad that I read about the lack of WiFi and cellphone service in advance so I was prepared. I took it as a break to spend time with my friends and husband - a time to disconnect. They also host spiritual conferences there, we were told. I can imagine it being a good place for a church retreat - the rates for conferences were very reasonable - advertised in the $400 range for a full weekend of meals and activities. In fact, I have to say this was one of the best lodging experiences I've had. They do all the little things right. The rooms were large, yet cozy, and well-cared for, and Rod and Karin are up in the morning, cooking breakfast, and chatting up their visitors. Morning Glory has easy access to Snowshoe (about a 10-15 minute drive). We didn't travel with our pet, but I understand they have pet-friendly rooms. Coming here was absolute happenstance, just looking up if there was a hot spring in Virginia and there was. And I found this amazing Bed and breakfast that was affordable, comfortable, and dog friendly. Our entire stay felt like something out of a story book. A babbling brook in the back, a delightful square to explore, flowers, fields, breakfast with fresh juice fruit and coffee delivered to our room every morning. Bathing under the stars and sleeping under them too. What an amazing long weekend. Bear our border collie was welcomed with open arms, he was so comfortable the entire stay. He enjoyed the accommodations and romping in the fields (and drinking from the creek, I wouldn't recommend doing that yourself.) Our whole stay was stunning. I will have to say the grounds and building were in great condition and the service was very good. Our breakfast was also very good and the waitstaff were very friendly and helpful. I had no idea how historic this facility is and it is a living museum. From the iconic central structure which was completed in 1913, the interior designed by Dorthy Draper to lift the spirts of a war weary country which was completed in 1948. And in 1962 a secret bunker was built to house congress and the President and VP in case of a nuclear attack. The overall experience was very entertaining and enlightening. This is not a cutting edge modern resort but a piece of history that gives you a look at a time which was more simple in some ways but also very complicated from active war time into the cold war. The interior took some getting used to but after understanding the significance of interior design I can see why they are not making any major changes.

Elk River Inn and Restaurant is 20 minutes (11 miles) away at the base of the mountain situated right on its namesake - the Elk River. What truly carries this rating is the food and atmosphere. It's very cottage-like feeling with lots of wood interior and cozy reminders all around you that you are in the mountains. I wouldn't consider the interior kitsch, but rather, decor appropriate for what it is. It was built in the 1980's and to some degree still reflects the time it was built through its furnishings. In a way it reminds me of my parent's house and I can appreciate this sort of decor. For dinner we had a meat and cheese board, rainbow trout and duck breast. Items, which, we were better happy with. The food was delicious and proportionally fulfilling. I had a glass of wine and he had a beer. Prices are similar to what we are familiar with while dining high end in DC, and we weren't that surprised to find that out here. If you are looking for something moderately priced then this might not be the place for you. Service was less than amazing. It was slow and a bit amiss. That is why this isn't a 5 star rating. It was disappointing. She was nice enough, but not someone I would want to have as a server again. We were next to a table who had a different server and he was on top of his game without a beat. This is totally worth a visit if you want to get away from the mountain for an evening. It was refreshing having food that didn't involve something fried, a burger, or sandwich.

They had a full kitchen so you could cook anything your heart desires which was nice cause I had been eating fast food all week. While it isn't fully updated in decor, it is clean, and the beds are comfortable. My only issue is that upon arrival, we discovered that the table in our room was broken -- one of the legs was cracked and snapped, but you wouldn't notice it unless you tried to place something on it. We notified the staff, but I don't think they were able to do anything about it. Another problem: the faucet wasn't working properly. It only produced really hot water, no matter which direction it was turned, and it also leaked at the knob. I've see a lot of good reviews, so I'm sure this place has seen better maintenance in the past. I can't imagine the pandemic has been helpful for business. Bottom line: it's clean, you get what you pay for. I'm glad I stayed there, though.
