If you like gravel biking, the Greenbrier River Trail is a short bike ride from the house and if you don't have your own, there's a rental/shuttle service in town at the one and only traffic light. We have ridden in October and saw a couple of bears on the ride. We also rode in the spring and didn't see any but Ann said she saw one while walking the trail with their baby. No issues with them though. I def want to visit again but we've had a couple of health issue that put our Wanders (and waders) on hold.

I reached out to Chuck and he gave me the information I needed to go ahead with it, even though I still wasn't locked in for my arrival. Once I was able to give him my start and end location to shuttle my car and trailer, he and his in-store staff helped me to feel very comfortable before I headed into the quiet zone around the Greenbank Radio Observatory (no cell service!). When I arrived in Cass to start the trail, I found that one of my kid's bike had lost an axle. Luckily I was able to find a replacement part texting via Wifi in the Company Store, and drove to Marlinton to pick it up. There I was able to tell Chuck about my emergency plans and he met me to discuss the new end point and good places to stop. His wife picked up my car and left it in Renick exactly as planned. Despite our setbacks, the trip was great. Without Chuck's assistance and advice, this trip would not have been such a success.

I called and a warm male voice answered assuring me of the safe location of his motel. Once I arrived and checked in I felt like I had just checked in with family! The living room had an inviting fireplace and we took the time to even sit on and enjoy the large spacious front porch, even in the cold fall weather. The owner was playing piano when we arrived. Because of covid, there was no breakfast, but we received free breakfast vouchers to Route 66 which is a local restaurant nearby. It is not that far to snowshoe for skiing. It's near cass scenic railroad! We would most definitely stay there again! Highly recommend! Great place and great owners!

I will have to say the grounds and building were in great condition and the service was very good. Our breakfast was also very good and the waitstaff were very friendly and helpful. I had no idea how historic this facility is and it is a living museum. From the iconic central structure which was completed in 1913, the interior designed by Dorthy Draper to lift the spirts of a war weary country which was completed in 1948. And in 1962 a secret bunker was built to house congress and the President and VP in case of a nuclear attack. The overall experience was very entertaining and enlightening. This is not a cutting edge modern resort but a piece of history that gives you a look at a time which was more simple in some ways but also very complicated from active war time into the cold war. The interior took some getting used to but after understanding the significance of interior design I can see why they are not making any major changes.
