    BBQ Nachos

This place is about a 20 min drive from Snowshoe but it is so worth it! The trout here is all fresh because they harvest from their pools surrounding the restaurant! The food was so fresh and we got the smoked trout starter, and this was absolutely amazing. I got the BBQ brisket nachos and this thing was huge and was only $10! It was more than enough for me! My wife and son had the fish and chips, and they both said 5 stars as well. Then we had the dessert and the Oreo pie is a must try, and it made daily on site! This place is definitely worth the trip, and it's a cool place to walk around and check out the river!

The Greenbrier - A Sunday afternoon in mid December

    The Greenbrier

    (364 reviews)

I want to preface this review by saying that we did not stay overnight in a room at The Greenbrier,…read morebut we did spend most of the day there, and I'm glad we did. When you pull in, you will be greeted by security at the front gate. We advised them we were there for the bunker tour and to do some shopping and they gave us a parking pass and directions to the best place to park. The resort is iconic, huge and pristine. We walked our dog around the grounds and up to the main building. Unfortunately, even though they say that the resort is dog friendly, there are some areas where dogs are not allowed. So I waited outside while my husband spoke to someone at the front desk about reserving a spot for the bunker tour. When he returned, I went inside while he stayed out front with our pup. When you walk in the decor hits you all at once and, if you are a Fallout fan like I am, everything just feels so familiar and comfortable. The bold, eccentric colors and patterns, the chandeliers and unique furniture... It's all there. I wandered through the shops which are upscale and fun to browse, even if you're just looking. I bought some giant macarons which were priced incredibly reasonably and really enjoyed them. All of the staff I encountered were friendly and helpful, and even without reservations, we were able to get tickets to the bunker tour. Be advised that they made it very clear to us that getting tickets "day of" is not the standard experience, so I do recommend reserving tickets if you want to do the tour. The vault tour itself is probably closer to four stars, but it's definitely a must. Knowing there was a fully built secret congressional bunker hidden underneath this glamorous resort for decades is wild. You walk through the old dorm rooms and meeting areas and see how it was all set up so long ago. You're not allowed to take any photographs, but I did read some basic information before coming. Still, reading about it and seeing it are two totally different things. It cost well over $100 for the two of us to do the tour and that is before tip so it definitely isn't cheap. It would have also been nice to have more seating, especially for things like watching the video, etc. My feet hurt a little after the tour from standing so long on the hard concrete floors of the bunker. The only reason that we did not end up spending the night is that we really wanted to be inside some of the main buildings and although they do offer dog friendly accommodations, they are only located within certain cottages kind of on the edges or outskirts of the property. There is also a $250 fee for dogs so we decided at the time that it would not be worth it for us, however, full disclosure: we regret that decision. We definitely should have spent the night. It was a once in a lifetime experience for me and if I ever get the chance to come back here I will definitely get a room and stay as long as I can, soaking up the ambiance and anemoia.

Yes I know the decor is supposed to be iconic, but it's just so outdated. It's not really that fun. The view is something to look at though! Love the mountains. They've got some nice activities and the fitness area is pretty decent with weights and machines. Falconry was an interesting excursion but the pricing is kinda crazy. The restaurants were all pretty good on the quality side but service was painfully slow for most. The breakfast buffet though is epic!

After spending all day on the lake, we checked in at 6:30 PM only to find out they only accept credit cards, unless you're Canadian, then they accept debit. Thankfully, we had an emergency credit card, or we wouldn't have been able to stay in the room we booked. The lady behind the counter, Laura, was extremely unhelpful. She told us, "I don't know what to tell you, it's your cards that are bad." Another staff member mentioned there was a glitch with some of the credit machines, which is why our debit cards wouldn't work. Despite having our card on file, they refused to accept cash and even had an ATM right behind me. When we finally got our keys, we discovered they put us in a king suite, which is a single room with a king bed and a couch, not the one-bedroom we had booked. When I returned to the front desk, I told the young man that was there that I was put into the wrong room. Laura made sure to come out as soon as she saw me from the back. Laura said that the NEW owners took our room for themselves and that the GM told her to still charge us the one bedroom rate, which was $50 more than the room we received. I requested to switch to a two-queen room, which was $110 compared to $190, but Laura insisted she would have to charge my card again. As a line of people started forming behind me, I pulled up the hotel's website to show the rate for the king suite. Laura reluctantly agreed to discount the rate to $161 after taking my phone from me and looking at the days inn web site, but only after I insisted. She then said, "I don't think anything I do will make you happy, why don't I just check you out?" I told her what would make me happy is to be fair and give me the rate for the room I was put in and not try to upcharge me because the owners took my room. She rolled her eyes, "I will just give you the $161 rate." in a rude clipped tone. I said thank you I appreciate that. After asking for a receipt, she initially refused, stating they only give receipts at checkout. When I asked to take a picture of the computer screen with the new rate, she finally provided a room registration with the discounted rate and made sure to circle the new rate in red marker giving it to me with a scowl on her face. This experience was incredibly frustrating, especially since I visit this hotel regularly for lake boating trips and have never had such issues before. Laura was very rude and unprofessional. I strongly advise staying away from this hotel. Wish I could give 0 stars but unfortunately you have to give at least one.

The hotel isn't so old, I was told 17 years old but it seems older with its classic style - it's gingerbread moldings and large porches - and it's quite cute. I really enjoyed my time here. I'm glad that I read about the lack of WiFi and cellphone service in advance so I was prepared. I took it as a break to spend time with my friends and husband - a time to disconnect. They also host spiritual conferences there, we were told. I can imagine it being a good place for a church retreat - the rates for conferences were very reasonable - advertised in the $400 range for a full weekend of meals and activities. I can imagine this business growing as the location is extremely beautiful and it's a powerful thing to disconnect and reconnect with loved ones.

She was kind, professional and genuine... we would not have made it through the weekend without her! Thank you so much Teresa! I will also say that the Corduroy Inn was the nicest lodging we saw on the mountain... we ventured inside a few of the hotels looking for food and noticed that none of them were as well constructed, clean or beautiful as Corduroy Inn. The rooms are exquisite and amenities (espresso machine, heated flooring, washer/dryer access) were extremely appreciated. Lacking was luggage carts... that would have helped with all our gear. Such is the case with The Inn at Snowshoe. A+++ from this family. They upgraded us for some unknown reason to a small apartment with two bedrooms, full kitchen and a jacuzzi tub for the kids. The room was pedestrian but very clean. The Par-Mar is right down the street for the only affordable groceries in the entire area. I would prefer to cook for my kids, rather than pay for overpriced, poor quality resort restaurant food, and it saves a ton of money. Yes, The Inn, is down the mountain.
