On 6/8, I awoke to find my camper surrounded by water. The water had pushed debris up against and under my camper. Almost everything outside on my "patio" area had been washed away. The campground employee said, "We were waiting for you to get up". In addition, the same employee said, "This is the third time this has happened". After I was able to get my camper to my RV service provider, I was informed the camper had water damage. This water damage resulted in the total loss of my camper. I was shocked, and am still grieving the loss of my camper. I took great care with it and had always felt safer in a private campground vs other options. I always thought Walnut Hills Campground would look out for me while I stayed there, but this was not the case. I still cannot believe they just watched the water rise around my camper and did absolutely nothing to try to warn me before or during this event. They could have tried to call or text to warn me, but they did not. Based on this experience, it appears Walnut Hills Campground has very serious infrastructure and procedural problems. Specifically, the drainage in and around sites 104, 105, 106 and 109 thru 117. There are creeks that will not drain properly during any level of rainfall. In addition, this water that backs up will cause road closures within the campground potentially preventing egress from some areas of the campground. They also do not have any warning system in place to warn campers of rising water. A campground employee told me it was safe to drive through some of the roads covered in water because she had driven her golf cart through it and it was, "okay". We enjoyed the live music in the evenings, as well. Site 86 was pretty awful. There is a large tree approximately 3 feet inside the site border, making it impossible not to back in at a sharp angle to be able to access the FHU. Unfortunately, this also sets your front door and steps right at the next campsite's sewer hose. One misstep and you would faceplant on their hose. This makes in impossible to sit outside under the awning. The picnic table and fire ring are behind the site, sloping steeply down a muddy hill. The water pressure was almost non-existent. So, we decided to take advantage of the bath house directly across from our site. Not a good idea, as the water backed ip in the shower and left standing water full of bugs and whatever other nastiness was in the drain. There seem to be many full time campers there. Very nice people. Kind and friendly. However, the site themselves were pretty trashy considering the daily rate for these sites. One had a toilet plunger that appeared to have been flung onto the site deck. Others had piles of random items and tarps everywhere. Again, cool people but it's ridiculous to charge the rate this place does and expect to look at other people's pile of junk. We camp often in Virginia, but won't be going back to this place. Sad, because the place has good potential and is conveniently located to lots of places, but...ick.

This place has everything you'd want in a cabin vacation. We stayed in the Lakeside cabin and it…read morewas very comfortable with all the amenetis of home (including wi-fi and a full kitchen with a dishwasher) plus a hot tub on the back porch with a perfect view of the lake. There are a couple of hiking trails on the property itself plus there is good fishing in the lake (I caught a couple of nice bluegill thanks to Lisa's tip on the best fishing spot) and you can use kayaks, a paddle boat and a row boat as well. Each cabin also has a firepit, grill and picnic table. The property location is perfect as well and you're only a couple of miles from a Dollar General, grocery store, and most importantly wineries and breweries while still being in a really quiet place. There are couple of minor issues to keep in mind but don't let them stop you from staying here. The lighting in the cabin's living was a little dim so it could be a little hard to read at night if you don't move right next to a lamp. The beds were comfortable but the mattresses were just a little hard but that's just personal preference. Things were pretty quiet outside when we were there but I could see the lake getting a little busy if all four cabins were full and everyone wanted to use the lake at the same time. Also keep in mind that pets are allowed in most of the cabins and I believe people are supposed to keep their dogs on leashes but didn't always do so. Duane and Lisa are awesome people and provide the southern hospitality that you'd expect. A storm was coming the day we were supposed to check in and they emailed us to let us know we could check in earlier than usual that day or even the night before to make sure we stayed safe. I'd come back here for sure and highly recommend checking this place out.

If you are looking for a private cabin in the woods with easy access to a creek right outside the back door, THIS IS NOT THE PLACE FOR YOU. - The cabin is located on a well-traveled road, not off the beaten path via the gravel drive depicted. - There are two additional homes right next door - a big rating of 0 for privacy. - The inside is extremely small (which was ok), but the photos do not accurately depict what is there. The full size washer/dryer (in the kitchen) is overkill in this little space , no cute table & chairs; instead an ugly bar thing. The furnishings are more than a little worn; look like they came from a bad second-hand store. - Bath is ok; no shower. - Upstairs is a one room loft. The video depicts 2 full size beds, the written description states 3. Which is it? Three beds and dressers, which makes for very little space to even move around. I can't imagine 6 adults sleeping up there. - If you are disabled or elderly, you will not be able to enjoy the creek in the back as one must navigate a steep vertical slope down/up. And, I mean steep! - While the cabin is set up to sleep a hand full of people, the size is truly for no more than 2 - even three would be pushing it. - As we didn't stay, I can't really comment on the kitchen (it "appeared" adequate) or the condition/comfort of the beds. We wanted to get away from it all, not be sharing our time with the neighbors next door and not be able to enjoy the creek and surrounding woods. Suffice it to say, people do not pack up with 2 large dogs, fill up with gas (which is not cheap these days), and travel for several hours only to turn around and leave. While we were offered to try another cabin, we declined in that we really didn't want to deal with folks who had been so deceptive from the get go and continued to place the blame on us since we didn't investigate the property on Google Maps. Really!!! We were offered a 50% refund, of which we only received a portion. We should have been refunded 100% for the pet fee charge and the arm load of fire wood we purchased, plus an error in their math when initially charging us. As far as I'm concerned, we should have been refunded for every penny.
