    Vegan pho
    Julia C.

They offer a good variety of vegan options which all kind of taste the same. We ordered the vegan eggrolls which were dripping in oil, but still pretty good, the vegan pho soup, which didn't have much flavor to it, and the noodles were all broken apart, and a vegan noodle stirfry. I would say the noodle stirfry was the best item we ordered and the only item I would re order. The soup and noodles had the same vegetables like broccoli, bok choy, carrots, onions, and included fried tofu. The service was good and food came out pretty quick. It was really hot in the restaurant, but the ambience was nice.

Perfect for lunch on a brisk day. Portions are HUGE and reasonably priced. Flavoring is very good. I liked my chicken curry soup. Clean restaurant that felt very spacious.

    Bad beef!

Yikes. Would like to be supportive of Soall but the quality control left when the owners moved to the Beverly restaurant. Wonderful concept for an Asian restaurant in Marblehead but it's gone down hill like a rolling stone. Ordered the beef pho with beef on the side and received questionable pieces of "rare" uncooked beef. Showed it to the counter people at check out who told me, "that's how we receive the beef". Really? maybe you nuked frozen beef? The more authoritative of the 2 turned on her heel and walked behind the kitchen curtain. You accept raw beef with brown splotches and sell it to your customers? Great broth - really great broth but horrible beef and service 'tude". Enjoy at risk but enough is enough. This restaurant will fail (like most in Marblehead) eventually because they are absent owners and have school kids running the business. Enjoy! Ambiance is close to dire overlooking a parking lot and high beams shining in your eyes but that's the vibe!

    Grilled Beef & Betel Leaves

Marblehead probably isn't the first place that comes to mind when you decide you want Vietnamese cuisine, but it probably should be. Soall Bistro is delicious. I've been wanting to try them forever, and I found out about them because of their pop-up, Nightshade, which is doing some really innovative cuisine (no, I haven't been, because I always miss them when I'm home). Soall is cute and modern and I like that they have a decent-sized to-go/waiting area as well as a welcoming dining room. The service is fantastic. I forget my server's name but I loved her. For my meal, I started with the shrimp goi cuon (always a favorite of mine) and grilled beef and betel leaves. I then opted for the lunch special, a 1/2 bun bowl with a side of cucumber salad. The goi cuon was super fresh, and I like that you can order just one roll. I have no words to describe the grilled beef and betel leaves. You just have to order it. It is so fragrant and so flavorful. The leaves are slightly crisp and the beef is tender. I don't think I've ever had anything like it. Do not miss this item. As for the bun, I was quite side they didn't offer pork, as bun cha is my go-to. I opted for chicken, as I already had beef and shrimp. I didn't care for the chicken--it was underseasoned and slightly dry. But all the ingredients were fresh, and I kept some of the tamarind sauce from the betel leaves appetizer to add into it, along with the nuoc cham, and that mix worked well. I enjoyed my cucumber and Thai basil salad, which was quite refreshing. I wanted to return to try more on the menu, but did not get a chance during this trip. I'll definitely be back when I visit again and will bring my dad (mainly so he can pay, but also because he needs to try Soall). I'd be a regular if I still lived on the North Shore.

Pho, wishing for some tripe though.

Some of the occasional negative reviews of this place are shameful and totally unworthy from my experience. The gnocchi in "the Little Store Gnocchi" dish was melt in your mouth perfection. Best I ever had in the USA (I have been to Italy 40+ times). The mushrooms, truffle oil and Alfredo-like sauce (it's better than classic Alfredo ... smoother, less sticky, less fatty, more garlicky - and scrumptious... it was so tasty, I could drink the remnants like a divine soup -- and frankly, I did! The Veal Marsala was tender and seasoned perfectly, coated in tasty mushrooms and a dark Marsala sauce that was done with just the right balance of sweet and savory. My wife had the Seafood Di Mare that was piled high in a skillet full of calamari, shrimp, mussels and scallops on top of homemade fettuccine. The white wine sauce this was bathing in was a little tame for the magnitude of the dish - good, just not spectacular. All in all, we loved our food so much that we ordered a Haddock Francese "to go" so we can have it the following night and expand our Little Store palate. The ambiance is cute and quaint, old school pictures on the wall in unmatched frames that you would find at a garage sale. I felt like I was in a neighborhood ristorante in Tuscany. We saw only 1 employee all night and she was a hustler (in a great way). She did everything ... never stopped buzzing around to take care of a full restaurant-- not to mention a thriving takeout business (folks ... please tip this gal even when ordering takeout - she is busting her tail for you!). I love the BYOB approach because I always have lots of wine at the house - I don't need to spend an additional $100 on a $40 bottle of wine when I go out. One last comment - this is an adorable romantic place - unless the guests who visit make it otherwise. I was there with my wife, as were several other husbands enjoying a relatively quiet night out with their significant others. One younger group of 5 friends took the center table, and as the alcohol consumption rose, the volume crescendoed to the point of shouting just to be heard. A neighboring gentleman intervened and asked one particular girl to please stop shouting. He was right to do this - and to the girl's credit, she apologized and the rest of the evening was so pleasant. I say this just to remind people - restaurants are only as pleasant and romantic as the guests who honor them. By all means - celebrate life and friendship ... but be wary of your surroundings when your neighbors are just an arm's length away. God bless the Little Store -- Marbleheaders are sooooo lucky to have her !

Restaurant Week, as per the Salem Chamber of Commerce's website, is summed up as: "Participating restaurants offered special two- and three-course prix-fixe menus, giving locals and visitors alike a chance to explore, support, and celebrate Salem's vibrant dining scene." For $45 I got cheddar jalapeño fritters, a poutine burger (hamburger with fries cheese and gravy on top, kale Caesar salad with freshly grated cheese, and fresh, piping hot apple cider donuts. The burger was hearty, the fritters popped, and the donuts hit the spot but by far the standout was the kale caesar salad with the creamy dressing over crispy and crunchy kale topped with the tangy grated cheese. A Downeast cider washed it all down and was refreshing. I went on a weekday so there were a few people sitting at the bar with me but overall the place wasn't packed. What I really appreciated was the general manager came to talk to me specifically about their Restaurant Week food selection and to get my feedback. She was super friendly and I told her about the kale caesar salad. Parking is on the street and can be hit or miss because The Babe is right on Washington Street where it starts to curve around the corner. It's worth it to keep circling though. The Babe has different events each night of the week, including Jazz Tuesdays and karaoke Fridays. I had a great time at The Babe and I appreciate how much they support the local Salem community. I am looking forward to going back!
