Friendly atmosphere and pretty space, but quite disappointing. Dishes were not very flavorful and on the bland side. I assumed that because the owners are Vietnamese, the food would be the real deal. Unfortunately, it was so-so. One in our party is Vietnamese and was utterly confused by the lack of flavor. Entire front and kitchen staff looked like local high schoolers-sweet and friendly, but I thought that at least one of the owners would be managing the actual cooking. The spring and summer rolls were okay-ish; cucumber salad with Thai basil was awful. The dressing was not mixed through and the basil just tossed on top. The banh mi- best part was the baguette. Not very spicy and the mayo was non existent. Really a shame :( For more authentic Vietnamese, definitely head to Lynn, Quincy or Chinatown in Boston. read more

I visited for the first time tonight, and really dig this new addition to Marblehead. The setup is kind of interesting, primarily for the big kitchen to tabletop ratio. The large counter suggests this is geared towards a lunch/takeout crowd. Having said that, the dining room setup was every bit as comfortable and inviting as you could expect. It felt sort of like eating in a friend's kitchen. What makes Soall pretty great is the very balanced compromise the chef makes between authenticity and suburban palatability. The deep and complex Vietnamese street food flavors are all accurately and abundantly represented, yet there is also nothing that shocks or offends. For example, the rich beef pho broth can compete with the best, and the steak is sliced thin and rare, but there is no tripe or tendon. Oh - the egg roll is kind of amazing. All the ingredients were super fresh and high quality. Soall is what Boston's Myers + Chang wants to be, but fails at. For people who have never tried Vietnamese, Soall would be a very welcoming introduction. The menu is simple, and the chef comes out to explain how to eat properly and checks up on her customers. In need of comfort, my friend told me she knew where the best local chicken soup was. Then she said it was Vietnamese, and I couldn't imagine what Vietnamese chicken soup was, but it turned out to be the best chicken soup I've ever had in my life. As she promised. I decided to try this new spot as take-out last night and I was very happy with everything. While I was waiting for my order in the really nicely decorated dining room, I enjoyed chatting with owners Tan and Mia. They were very helpful with the menu and can help those unfamiliar with Vietnamese food feel very comfortable. I had the Vietnamese fried rice with chicken satay. The rice was delicious and full of veggies and meat. The chicken satay was good, but not the best I have ever had. My wife had the Pho Bo and really liked the rich broth and noodles. It hought the portions were great and the quality for the price was excellent. Considering that this place is so new, they are doing a grerat job and are on the right track. Many customers walked out without being served and management did not appear to be sympathetic. My girlfriends and I just enjoyed another great meal at Soall Bistro, this time for lunch. They have gone through some transitions in the last 6 months, and though I have NEVER had anything but a fresh and delicious meal here, all the new menu and service kinks (if there were any) are well in the past. I enjoyed a $12 lunch combo which is the best deal around. I paired a light but flavorful vermicelli with barbecued sausage (served on a lemongrass skewer - yum!) with an adorable portion of the coconut curry soup. It was more than enough food. My friends had pho with all the fixins and we shared a delicious shrimp toast appetizer. (I recommend getting your own, they're too good to share!) The service was friendly and proficient as ever and the management was present and accommodating without being overbearing. Soall remains one of our favorites for lunch AND dinner! read more

Soall is amazing. The food is authentic, healthy, all made from scratch. Sa (owner) leaves out no details and takes great care in over-seeing all aspects of her kicthen. They recently expanded because business was booming, and after a brief adjustment period they are back on top. I would easily pay a great deal more for such delicious food. The vegetables are always fresh and broth is seasoned to perfection. Be sure to try their new menu item, shrimp fritters, which are shrimp, sweet potato, and onion all fried- a crispy treat! The new menu is too limited and the dinner chicken salad is way overpriced and tastes very strong of red onions; in fact, that's basically all I could taste when I had it recently. This would have been 5 stars if I reviewed it a few months ago. The whole menu changed for the worse and got more expensive. The pho was my favorite and now I find the chicken and broth to be terrible with the changes they made. All of my wife's favorite meals have been eliminated or changed for the worse. Like another reviewer, I use to love Soall food and we were frequent take-out flyers! The past several times we have been very disappointed. Not only has the pho changed but the overall quality of the dishes has gone down. For example, the shrimp sweet potato fritters used to be excellent, but they are not the same. If they're not missing the shrimp entirely (just fried grated sweet potato) -- they have a few specks of shrimp in them. The egg rolls taste like they frozen supermarket ones, the shrimp toast that used to be great is chewy and hard, the salmon clay pot is okay, the ginger lobster is just ok and overpriced for the tiny portion, but again the big disappointment is the pho. We used to be huge fans of Soal, it had always been our go-to place for amazing healthy food. We are not at all in favor of the recent changes to the menu and staff changes. Not sure what crowd they are trying to appeal to as it was simply perfect as it was. I hope they wake up and go back to what already worked so well. Went to Soall Sunday night for their unveiling of their new chef-menu. Can't pick a favorite! Everything was so delicious and presented beautifully. Wish I could eat the Pomello Salad everyday for lunch. So fresh and bright and full of crab, pomello and mint. The salad with poached lobster was perfect, we couldn't eat enough of the shrimp toasts and the mussels in coconut milk were amazing. Can't wait to go back. The service was wonderful and very attentive and don't be fooled by the location in a small strip of takeout stores...the decor is very chic and upscale. I am a big fan. read more

Additionally, asked for extra of a vegetable that came with my dish and they charged me $5 for a singular vegetable. SUCH A RIP OFF. Wow!!! I have loved Soall since it opened and now I love it even more. Soall has really grown up. The new menu is amazing are the new chef and service team. It's so fun watching an already great restaurant grow and get even better. New England Seafood pho is out of this world. Lobster broth with chunks of lobster, scallops, fish and calamari for 16 bucks??? The tuna tartare is so clean and unadulterated. I don't know how they make any money. Such an incredible value. I love that Soall refuses to rest on its laurels and is constantly evolving. If you are looking for incredibly fresh, creative, beautiful vietnamese food, I can't imagine finding better. read more

I love the food here. It is seriously some of the most delicious and nourishing food i have had eating out anywhere on the north shore, and could hold it's own as a world class restaurant. We have been here three times since the grand (re?) opening. Each time the food has been outstanding. The chef/owner(?) Mia clearly works incredibly hard and has learned her craft to the fullest. The Pho is so delicious, as is everything else we have had there. I can't recommend it enough. The only reason I am not giving 5 stars has nothing to do with the food, but everything to do with the waitstaff and help. Two out of the three times we have had really, really bad service. No reflection on the chef and owner, as they rushed to make things better after the bad things happened. But it takes a lot to push me to my limit, and this place is clearly so busy that they are having trouble staffing to cover the demand. It is a good problem to have. But a problem. I get it, I own my own business, and I know what people are up against for help. But the guys who end up working here are in great part very arrogant seeming and tonight the new guy who was at the helm seemed almost annoyed that he had to do things. His ability to take an order was zilch. He answered the phone and took phone orders for about twenty minutes after we sat down at the bar, and we finally demanded he come over and he was almost annoyed it seemed. So, he took the orders of the three people I was with and then walked away, leaving me sitting there amazed. When I yelled at him to come back, he was like "oh, I thought..." What did he think? I was a phantom, a figment of his imagination? This kid was a total moron, and not even a little humble. So, not a surprise that he never produced my food. Mia came out and was gracious and it made us feel bad. It is depressing to see someone so talented work so hard and then to have her employees being so incompetent and rude. I hope she fires that boy. I have struggled with the same issues at my business for a decade, and I know that someone that bad does not get better. Attitude is everything. Many thanks to her and Leo for making everything better and bending over backward to salvage our meal. Which was fantastic, if you base it just one the food. So, do eat here, but maybe avoid going when it is busy. That is their weak point. read more

We got a cabbage salad that was REALLY good. The pho was great too but, we were not happy with the price and the lack of Sriracha sauce. They have a friendly staff and the food comes out pretty quickly. Some other things that bother me are the chairs. They were just not very comfortable at all. When I got up, the chair was so light it almost came with me and I almost fell over. And I'm not too heavy of a person. For the most part, we liked it. The food maybe good if you get any. Called on a Friday for takeout. Was told an hour, had no problem with this. Went to pickup and waited 30 more minutes extra. The waitstaff berates the cooks to put their orders first so takeout orders get redirected to dine in then remade. I saw this repeatedly. I might have been ok even with that except when we got home one entree was missing. I called and told them manager I was coming back for a refund.
