We stopped by once to check it out and buy some Warhammer 40k supplies (books and paints) and were greeted by friendly staff and a relaxed atmosphere. We decided to come back for Friday Night Magic and once again had a great time, with a super welcoming community and the staff, as usual, being great. If I had any feedback, I'd ask that they have more snacks to buy, especially coffee or energy drinks for game nights, and maybe adjusting the interior lighting. The bright white glare that they have in there currently does strain the eyes after a while, and there are some sections which are darkly lit, namely their 40k section. Their supplies were a little scant at the time (out of some primers and was hoping for more 40k minis) but I write this off to them having just opened and simply having a successful launch and a loyal customer base. Don't get me wrong - they have plenty of minis, but more singles would be great. I would also like to see them include nights for other MTG formats on the weekend, like Modern. Other than that, can't recommend them enough. I can definitely see myself becoming a regular here and I will 100% be back.

Unfortunately, that just wasn't the case here. Customer service makes a big difference, and this experience completely turned me off from coming back.

I was greeted warmly as soon as I walked in. And I just started browsing the colorful shelves of board and card games. Near the register, big plushies (Kirby too) were on display. My cousin would've liked one, but maybe next time. I appreciated that the games were all in alphabetical order. A card game called Aquarius immediately caught my eye, and some random holiday mini puzzles that are perfect stocking stuffers. Never too early to shop! Past the shelves, I noticed a bunch of tables designed for playing board games, and I saw some shelves nearby loaded with games anyone who comes in can freely play (when the tables are open, of course). They were offering a LOT... more than I've seen anywhere else I think. I ended up chatting with Boyd about how cool the store is, and while I ended up asking what board games might be fit for the more casual game nights -- i.e. shorter ones that aren't too complex. He had tons of recommendations. Including the one I preordered and picked up a few days later, I added 4 new board games to my library, like Wavelength, Kites, and We're Doomed! So far I've only played Aquarius (which I LOVE), but I am super excited about opening the rest when the time comes. They have trading card game (TCG) and board game nights... they'll give you a calendar to stay up to date! I have already recommended this place to a bunch of friends I know enjoy stuff like this. There's even a dedicated area for painting figures, which is fantastic. I've done that at home, and there's a lot of gear that you need for that: to do it in a setting with people buzzing around you, good lighting, nice chairs, and paints and brushes all around you. Honestly, it just feels like a better way to do it than sitting in your basement, unless that's your sort of thing. There's also a huge gaming area. I didn't go in there, but I think that's the kind of amenity that is essential for a store like this. Snacks, food, games, dice, puzzles. But this place had loads of customers, and a bunch of other regulars in a side room used for gathering for in person play. Jeremy got his wish. A group of our friends are planning on getting together at least one Friday a month to play the Wheel of Time RPG. And he suckered me into joining. So he insisted that I pick out my own dice, rolling tray (the non-herbal kind), and a bag to hold the dice. He got some stickers and other stuff, too, cuz he's just so very into embracing the tabletop rpg gamer lifestyle. We joined the rewards program, so we'll obviously be back.

During COVID, my partner and I did about a puzzle every week. We now have cases of puzzles that we did one time, then packed away! I brought a few, so we could swap them out for a few "easier" puzzles that my kids could do. It's such a cool idea and love it and came back with 3 kiddo options. The store is so wonderful, located right across the way from Eastern Market on Capitol Hill. All of the staff is not just incredibly friendly, but quick to offer advice on games and puzzles to take home. There is a room where you can attempt puzzles and games. We spent several hours here just enjoying all of the entertainment. It's a great rainy or snowy day activity. The bookstore just next door is a perfect pairing.

There spacious and clean environment makes navigating and finding what you're looking for easy and the employee working at the time was both informative and patient with my questions. I noticed not only popular board games and pen and paper games, but some kickstater varieties for those looking for something interesting. If you are a trading card game player, GGG has almost every TCG under the sun, from Magic and Pokemon to and Flesh & Blood. They even carry rarer Japanese TCGs such as Digimon, Vanguard, Duel Masters, and One Piece. The one card game I couldn't find was Yugioh, so this store might not be for you if you're a Duelist. Be sure to call ahead to check availability. GGG has a massive playspace used for hosting D&D nights and TCG tournaments. They have a library of board games you can rent so you can play them before deciding to buy them. My biggest critique regarding GGG is the stuffy smell that fills most of the store. I'm not sure if it's bad air circulation or some carpet that's gotten moldy, but there is a pervasive stench that while not crippling, it does distract from the experience. It probably doesn't help that their gaming room is massive, but only has a single doorframe that allows any air to pass in and out of the room. Gritty Goblin Games has excellent gaming variety and helpful employees, but a bad smell (despite otherwise clean environment) prevents me from wanting to shop there for long.

The emphasis on community is strong here where I was welcomed and I was asked if they could help me look for any specific product. Like any card store, the prices depend on what you are willing to pay for said item. I do think their prices are fair and while it's not MSRP, it beats having to deal with the frustration of not being able to obtain product from a brick & mortar. But take this with a grain of salt; you are shopping from one place that has it all and you don't have to wait in line waiting to be informed that the stock is out. Overall, I think the only downside is the parking; it's limited and it's inconvenient to have to park at another store's front to walk to the store you want to go to but it is what it is. A $70 price increase turned a happy evening with my 11-year-old son into an experience neither of…read moreus will forget. My son and I were longtime customers of Blowout Cards' The Fantastic Store. We spent thousands of dollars there and genuinely loved visiting to open trading cards and enjoy our shared hobby. Unfortunately, our experience on September 30, 2026, changed everything. Two visits earlier, the sports section manager had scoffed and called me a "rude person" when I entered the store. I ignored the remark and continued shopping. Later, he told me words to the effect of, "There are a million other stores you can go to." I had not initiated a conversation with him. On September 30, another employee indicated that a football card my son wanted cost $170. The sports section manager intervened, took the card, and increased the price by approximately $70, remarking along the lines of, "Oopsy, looks like we forgot to mark it up." My son independently remembered both the comment and its unpleasant tone. When I questioned the increase, rather than addressing the transaction, the manager began discussing unrelated private matters in front of my 11-year-old son, other employees, and customers. He also acknowledged having complained about me to his girlfriend. What makes this especially upsetting is that I had already stopped engaging personally with this employee approximately three months earlier. Our previous conversations had been voluntary and occurred openly on the sales floor. I had been keeping to myself, minding my own business, and simply shopping with my son. If the employee had concerns about our previous interactions, he could have addressed them respectfully and privately. Instead, he introduced those matters during an unrelated purchase. I found this humiliating, deeply inappropriate, and frankly repulsive. During the confrontation, he walked around the counter and positioned himself directly behind my son, physically placing my child between us. I distinctly remember where he stood and found his behavior intimidating. He also made a comment to the effect that rude people get bad things. I asked him to leave me alone, and he responded by asking me to leave the store. My son later told me that I had done absolutely nothing wrong to deserve being asked to leave. Approximately five minutes afterward, the Director of Retail Operations called and instructed me to stay away. I submitted a formal complaint to CEO Thomas Fish, who acknowledged my concerns and promised to review the incident, employee conduct, and management's response. After receiving no substantive update, I followed up. One of my biggest concerns was my son, who was upset that we could no longer visit a store we loved. He couldn't understand why we were being excluded. The CEO confirmed that the review was complete and handled internally but declined to discuss the circumstances or identify any store policy I had violated. Instead, he formally prohibited me from returning. His explanation referenced my continued dissatisfaction and my public Google review, with the stated goal of avoiding future "contentious interactions." Most disturbing was his written warning: "Management has been instructed that, should you enter the premises after receiving this notice, they are to ask you to leave and, if necessary, contact law enforcement to address the situation." I had never threatened anyone or suggested that I would disregard the company's instructions. I found the reference to law enforcement unnecessarily harsh. The irony is difficult to overlook. I had already disengaged from personal interactions with this employee and was simply shopping with my son, yet I ultimately became the person excluded in the name of preventing further conflict. I recognize that a private business determines who may enter its premises. However, I believe this was a profoundly dismissive and disproportionate response to a legitimate customer complaint. My son did nothing wrong. He simply wanted to enjoy a hobby with his mother, and now we've lost a place associated with years of happy memories. What troubles me most is the message this experience sends: a customer should be able to set personal boundaries with an employee, continue shopping peacefully, and expect professional treatment. I wasn't asking for special consideration or a personal relationship. I was asking to be treated like any other paying customer. I expected basic professionalism, fair treatment, and meaningful accountability. Instead, I was left feeling that raising concerns about an employee's conduct had become the problem. For collectors and families, I recommend you take your business elsewhere.
