Was in town for a short stay. Thought I'd drop by before the flight home. Pretty easy to find off the highway. If you're looking for new comic books, it's a nice bright store. Everything is arranged nicely (marvel, DC and Indy). Was surprised they still had certain issues on the shelf still. There are some older books behind the counter and back issues in the back back but not taken care of too well. So if that's what you're looking for it's your LCS. read more

It's a roomy store, compared to a lot of comic shops, with a lot of recent series, if not the most recent issues of those series. Their margins must be tight, as they open at 10 AM on Wednesday, and some titles are sold out by 11:30. So, they appear to be under ordering, so as not to have to potentially sit on stock. Not too long ago, they changed their policy where they wouldn't be ordering variant covers unless you specifically pre-ordered them. Sure, that's their prerogative, but many variants are open-order, not requiring any minimums on the part of the retailer, so it just seems...odd. The service...This is my biggest gripe. Often, I've gone into the store to find the cashier talking to a friend/acquaintance. A customer might want assistance, and the cashier is visibly annoyed that he has to stop his conversation to provide customer service. Then, once the customer checked out and left, the cashier would turn to his friend and say something like "That's the guy I was telling you about", with a laugh. So, they seem to joke about their customers - the people keeping them in business - and it just feels unprofessional. I've worked retail, so I get it, but those aren't conversations to gold loudly, as other customers are in the store. I mean, what are they saying about ME when I leave? This has happened more than once, while some of the other loud topics of discussion aren't always appropriate for "polite company". The most friendly employee, sadly, passed away recently, so we're left with the ones talking behind our backs. read more

Beyond Comics is a great establishment for comic enthusiasts, collectors, and book lovers alike. I have purchased many comics here and have followed the recommendation of the employees. This Beyond Comics location is really the best compared to the Frederick location. What makes it amazing is the customer service. John Shine is knowledgeable, informative, and overall pleasant to interact with! Even though he wears his masks, you can tell he is greeting you with a smile! Even though I live in Frederick, I am willing to travel 30-40 minutes away to this location every time! I visited this store in conjunction with attending the Frederick Comic con. This was my first time here and it was an okay experience but can definitely be improved upon. What I liked: - Great location, easy to get in and out of, plenty of free parking - Nicely organized store with a wide variety of comic and pop culture. - Good selection of current/modern books. I was interested in Skottie Young covers and the store had an entire box with these books in it. Very convenient. - Attentive weekend staff that answered all my questions and provided just the right amount of help without being intrusive. What the can improve on: - Need to make the older books easier to browse through. The weekend manager specifically told me that any book over $15 is located behind the counter. Really? I can understand sectioning off books that are a little more expensive but $15? Makes it kind of hard when you have to keep asking to see boxes maintained behind the counter. - My biggest disappointment with this otherwise nice store and the reason for the low two star rating was that they don't discount at all. The price on the comic and the price totaled in the register is what you pay. I wasn't expecting a huge discount but in over 40 year of buying comics and visiting stores all across the country, this is the ONLY store I've ever been to that wouldn't even give a modest 10% discount at the point of sales. I spent over $400 there and couldn't get anything off the total. When I asked the weekend manger if he could give me a bundle discount if I purchased a lot of books and he said "no" and I honestly thought he was joking. I had to ask a second time to make sure I heard correctly. The owner really needs to delegate some authority to his manager to allow him the flexibility to apply discounts. read more

I like this place, it is honestly one of the best comic shops in this end of Montgomery County. Good selection of comics, decently organized, and they also have lots of board games. Why only 3 stars? Not a large selection of older comics... But the bigger issue is space. It looks like they hold Magic the Gathering events on Saturdays (might have been for a prerelease, and not a common event) and the shop was really really hard to navigate, difficult to get to the new issues and other places. Long story short, I was on a desperate quest to find old copies of Tales from the Crypt...or as it used to be known "Vault of Horror". Yes, I can order them online, but I needed one RIGHT THEN, so I did what any self respecting geek would do...head to the nearest comic book store. Now, I will admit, it's been many years since I've been in a comic book shop. When your BFF and her husband are actual comic book artists, you really don't *need* to hit up a shop to get all your geeky goods. Plus, I hit up a billion comic book conventions every year (yeah, I'm one of *those* geeks), so my comic book needs are usually well satisfied. However, I knew that Beyond Comics was pretty decent, and I knew they had a solid, if not overly extensive back-issue section. So I breezed into the shop, and the guy at the counter was uber helpful. While they didn't have *any* TftC comics (neither reprints nor back-issues), he did guide me to the "horror" section, which alas didn't have anything close to what I needed. He explained that due to the market and stuff, Beyond Comics really focuses on the superhero stuff and main titles, which is great, and I totally understand (I mean, you gotta sell what the market demands, right?), but it didn't help me for what I needed. Still, I'm usually used to getting dismissed as a flakey chick at comic book shops (even though I've been reading comics since I was 7, and have thousands upon thousands of books...all double boarded, bagged and snug in their cases that are 6" above the floor to prevent moisture from damaging any of them), and I appreciated how willing the sales guy was to try to help me and find an alternate solution to what I was looking for. read more

A safe haven for geeking out. Quiet, browser friendly store for local comic book/graphic novel lovers. Knowledgeable, friendly staff, always very helpful. If they don't have something in stock, they will order it for you. It's a store for people that love comics, run by people that love comics, and that makes for a more satisfying shopping experience. EXCELLENCE!!! I went to the shop just to check it out, I haven't been there in a while. I was looking for something that would make me laugh, the guy that helped me was very very helpful and really knew his stuff. They have a great selection of graphic novels, a large assortment of comics both old and new, t-shirts, and action-figures. It really just feels good being in there. Awesome Comic Book Store! I was looking for a fairly obscure comic and they had it! We had hit two other comic shops before hitting this one. The staff was helpful without being creepy and they had plenty of stock. It was worth the drive from Silver Spring to get it. There is a minimum purchase for credit cards. Its ok spot, I rather go to big planets. But if you need somewhere to get a quick comic i would go here. They seem to never have the variants I want. Either that or they are holding it for someone else and I have to sit there like a dog starring at a meal not being able to touch it. Some of the guys that work there seems like they have a problem holding comics for you. I went there one time and wanted to buy a 3D cover which was the last one on the shelf. I had no cash and saw nothing else i wanted to purchase I just wanted the 3D cover and the policy is that I couldn't purchase anything under $5 using a credit card. So I told the guy to hold it cause I wanted to get cash from the ATM. He said sure he was going to put it in his box so no one could grab it. Well I came back at least 20 min later and I walked in and saw the comic back on the shelf. I was like really I didn't even say nothing to the guy and just got my comic. Its seems like this with both beyond comics even the one in Frederick it felt like I was pulling their teeths. read more

While this shop doesn't always have exactly what I'm looking for, most of the time they can order what they dont have directly in stock. However, it's always the first shop I go to because it's local to me. The staff is great. They're always helpful and friendly and willing to have a conversation about nerdy stuff (I think that's an important aspect of a comic shop).
