We needed to buy a few more snorkel sets for some of the beginners in our party, so we stopped by last week. The only sets they had were nearly $300 for some Snorkel Bob branded gear. As I'd never heard of this brand before, I wanted to take some time to read up on it, so we thanked the woman working the counter and left. As we were leaving, we got called cheapskates. After that, there was no way we were ever going to spend a cent in that store. We happily spend thousands on scuba equipment and gear for other outdoor sports, but I don't just blindly buy some gear from a brand I've never heard of. Wanted to rent some snorkel gear for a day or 2. Saw the ad in one of the weekly pamphlets for them and it said $9 rentals. The hotel I was in told me they would charge me $18, so I headed to snorkel bobs. They were telling me $11 for gear so I mentioned the ad. They said they have old school equipment for that price. It looked like it was from the 1950s. No thanks! Nice little bait n switch here. It was too late to go back to the hotel so we bit the bullet and rented from them. Guy working wasn't the most personable and kind of rubbed me the wrong way, but I guess he was efficient and functional. They specialise in their own gear and it worked quite well actually. They also offer boat tours and other activities, but I just opted for the rental. read more

Every year we go to an island in Hawai'i, and every year we rent from Snorkel Bobs. Some locations are more friendly than others. This year was nice - for once there weren't 18 families in front of us being helped - the man helping us seemed a little abrupt, but whatever, yu can't take away my Aloha. We got the better package for snorkeling and didn't want any towels, chairs, or excursions - and we were quick and went on our way. We didn't have that shiny happy feeling leaving, but it wasn't bad, either. Just an efficient transaction, and good equipment that we could rely on for our 9 days on the island. First of all their gears are great; and the staff was friendly and knowledgable. My review has nothing to do with their rental business. My review was about the snorkeling trip we booked that canceled on us less than 18 hours before departure due to "financial reasons". Apparently other people canceled. The ticket says if we wanted to cancel within 48 hours we would get penalized. But apparently there's no penalty when they cancel on us. Since it is such short notice (we were supposed to go on that tour in 16 hours) we can't get booked onto another tour. There are several things about this that left a bad taste in my mouth: 1. We flew a long way to Hawaii and were really looking forward to this tour. We planned our activities around it. There is a loss (financially and emotionally) when we got canceled on short notice. Yet we have 0 power over what they do. These terms are unfair to begin with. 2. When I asked the staff of Snorkel Bob's about my point #1 above, I got the response "I don't think you understand how tours work. They cancel all the time". So be prepared to get canceled if you do book tours with them. Since apparently this happens a lot. 3. Why did he think telling me other people suffer too would make me feel better? 4. To make things worse, he hung up on me. 5. We didn't get canceled because of weather conditions or safety concerns. And if weather/safety was the case I would have completely understood. We got canceled because someone canceled on them and they can't make enough money out of the remainder of the group. This would have made a lot more sense if they hadn't already collected the penalty fees from the group that late-canceled on them; of they had given us the same 48 hours notice like how we were supposed to give them. What a great way to enjoy what was supposed to be a fun and relaxing vacation. So if you do book anything thru them, be ready to get gaslighted for what was completely reasonable response to unfair conditions, and get hung up on. read more

Rented two sets of masks, fins, and a boogie board. Lex did an awesome job helping us out. It was only her second day on the job, but she was knowledgeable, very personable, and helpful! She made us feel welcome and was very comprehensive in walking us through the snorkel gear and her favorite spots to dive around the island. The only issue we had was with the MoflO2 snorkel masks we rented. Unfortunately, the purge valves for both our masks were a little leaky, so that after every few breath, the mouthpiece would fill with a bit of water and make us cough. Reserved chairs and snorkel gear a couple of weeks ago for our trip to Maui. Received an email confirmation telling us our pickup store was the one in Lahaina on 07/22. Drove there and there was a sign on the door that they were closed Saturday and Sunday. Kind of messed up our plans for the day/weekend. I emailed the store 07/23, no response. On 07/24, I called and the lady said, "oh I saw your email." Why didn't she answer it then? She stated it was unplanned to close the store --- I get it, life happens, but it isn't good service. They had my email and phone number and should've attempted to contact me. She told me we could have gone to any Snorkel Bob's. How was I supposed to know that!? I recently rented snorkel gear for me and my family at Snorkel Bobs in Lahaina. Convenient location near downtown. We had a great experience. Tiare helped us get the right size gear. She was welcoming and friendly with the kids. We rented for the whole week and the price was very reasonable. Tiare recommended great beaches for our family to spend the day. We noticed that a set of our flippers were two different sizes and one of our masks kept leaking water in. Called about 8 times in a span of 3 hours to let them know that we couldn't use their gear that day. When I finally got them on the line the following day, I was asked if I had gone to any of the stores to switch out flippers/mask. Makes tons of sense, but when parking is super difficult to find and we are vacationing with a group of people, it's not the most convenient option. I get that things happen and mistakes are made, but telling me what I should have done when the mistake was on your end was a bit disappointing. She told us to come back in and switch the equipment out without mention of a discount for the inconvenience or lack of use. Not going back. read more

The store hours say 8-5 everyday but the doors were locked when we arrived to pick up gear. Someone eventually arrived to let us in and we were able to rent gear. We rented two sets of snorkel equipment and two chairs. The chairs were poor quality and difficult to carry and more expensive than other places. The gear was okay. One of the masks broke immediately after putting it on and we had to go back to trade it out. The gear was also significantly more expensive than other snorkel shops. When we went to return the gear, the store was closed at 2:20 pm despite the store saying it should be open. I tried calling to find out the combination for the drop box, but no answer. read more

The older guy who helped us was a complete jerk. We've been snorkeling several times before but it was the first time renting gear ourselves. We walked in and we were the only ones there. The guy behind the register didn't greet us or asked if we needed help. We asked him questions and he was flippant and rude. We felt like he acted like we were imposing on him!!! After, we learned that the rental fees were on the high side too. In addition, they also did not offer a military discount when we asked but yet we saw on Yelp later, they offered a free boogie board with a rental. We did end up renting because we wanted to just get it done but I will never go back to this location. I'm usually pretty lax about customer service too but my whole family felt the same way. We were fortunate enough to get to Snorkel Bob's first thing this morning & have the place to ourselves, which gave us plenty of time to chit chat with Zach & roll around on the floor with SB's new mascot Kuiaha! I realize people go to SB's to rent snorkel gear, but I will go back just to visit with Kui & Zach! Sweetest old rescue pit mix I've ever met. Bring some goodies & he'll be your best friend. Dont bring goodies & he'll still be your best friend! According to Zach, SB's is very generous to the Maui Humane Society & thats a good enough reason for me to rent my snorkel gear there. We walked in here morning of April 2nd to rent weekly gear for our entire family to find a manager who just seemed completely disorganized. He said it was his first day in the location and criticized those who had run the shop before him - apparently to explain why things were in such disarray. He was busy with another customer so we grabbed a few things off the racks ourselves (we're not snorkeling experts by any means). He finally comes over and explains that what we are doing is not appropriate etiquette. Fine - we sit down and wait. He takes us through his presentation and we go with his recommendations. In addition to snorkel gear, we rent body suits. We go with his recommendations. Over the next few days, we realize how off the mark his recommendations were. Our kids sizes were ridiculous. We had to re-rent appropriate sizes on actual excursions. Their upgrade fins were extremely uncomfortable when we tried them on. When we complained, he explained it would be different in the water. It wasn't. We had to re-rent those as well. As an example, below is what he recommended for our son, and what we actually ended up using (in black). Maybe he was having an off day. This place rocks!!! If you come to Maui and plan to snorkel, this is the perfect place to get your gear! Upon entering the store, we were warmly greeted by all of the friendly staff members present. Monroe was awesome! He helped my wife and I figure out the exact gear, sizes, etc. based on our snorkeling plans. We also wanted to find turtles during our snorkeling adventure; Monroe gave us some great suggestions on where to go (luckily for us we did indeed stumble upon turtles at one of the locations he suggested). I had no snorkeling experience whatsoever. Monroe was cool about providing me with tips and extra gear (floaters--which came in handy) to make me feel more comfortable as a novice. Makena was very friendly as well! She checked us out and provided some great tips for our stay her in Maui. They thoroughly explained how to drop off the gear when returning the equipment after hours. The vibe at this snorkel Bob's was very inviting. Once again, I highly recommend it! After multiple visits to tour stands in Lahaina and zero luck of getting help I took a chance and walked into Snorkel Bob's. That was where I met Sarah W. I told her I was looking to do the Molokini Snorkel Tour and the open-doors helicopter tour. Sarah sat with me and mapped out the best itinerary possible. She went above and beyond to assist with helping me find a way to get to tours given it isn't the easiest in Maui to get around. I would 100% advise you to go there if you are looking to book! Sarah helped make sure my luggage would be okay while I took my helicopter tour and even advised me on how long to give myself for each tour. She was extremely patient and sweet and it was a pleasure meeting her :) As for the tours - the helicopter tour was incredible. The cost is actually really good for a 45 minute flight and the views are beautiful. I had a great time. Unprofessional employee (Male and had a lip ring) We walked into the store and asked the employee if we can have 4 sets of snorkel gear. He said okay, but he was acting like we were a bother to him. We never used the drop box after hours, so we had questions. Every time we had a question he would answer in a sarcastic tone. My mom asked, "Where is the dropbox?" He answered, " Ummm it's right there, right behind you in the corner." (In a sarcastic voice) This is unacceptable! We are trying to make sure we do everything correctly to make it easier on us and your employees. When we were completing the transaction, he was going over the procedures and contract. The employee stated that if we keep the snorkel gear we have to pay the fee. My Dad said, "I don't think it will fit in our suitcase." (It was obviously a joke). The employee stated, "Not with that attitude." (In a cold tone) We were so confused by his comment. We were trying to stay positive, even though he had a bad attitude the whole time. Every time go to any of the islands we come to this chain, but we will not come back here anymore. We will go to Boss Frog's if we ever need snorkel gear. read more

HORRIBLE SERVICE. My husband and I have rented from this location before but not today. We walked in and the lady working was so RUDE! She told us to review the prices on the wall Without giving us direction. We just looked Around and didn't see anything and she then snapped..hello over there! And pointed to a blank wall. We then just looked at her and she asked what we We needed after rolling her eyes rudely. I told her we wanted beach chairs and an umbrella. She immediately replied very rudely that they don't have umbrellas and we should go to Boss Froggs across the street and then walked away so left. We received much better service and will never go back to Snorkel Bobs again after today. I have never seen a person try to run people Off who wanted to rent equipment before. 1 week rental costs $35 for adults. $22 for kids. (mask, tube, fins, mesh bag). $20 for float belt rental. $125 deposit for each adult rental and $70 for each kid rental. Wanted to rate higher, but felt I had to watch out in order to not be taken. Knowledgeable but fast talking Allison wasn't clear on pricing (had to ask several times, felt like I was getting sized up and upsold each time). She wasn't interested in making sure fins fit or mask seals well which meant we had to come back on second day after almost losing a fin and dealing with leaky mask on first day of snorkeling (the whole reason for why you rent instead of buying cheap equipment). Pricing not well posted and higher than competitors for older equipment. My advice: talk pricing first, and if you decide to rent here try on more than 1 pair of fins. Each fin is stretched differently and you NEED a good fit for each foot that doesn't dig. Your foot will shrink and slip around in water so a fin that fits too loose in the store means you'll lose it snorkeling and will have to pay up to $125 replacement cost that is reserved against your credit card. Mask: make sure it fits well (snort your nose to tighten) and then SMILE. Smiles and mustaches cracks most seals Take the time to adjust now while you can look in a mirror. Swim cap for folks with long hair will keep it out of the mask which can cause water leakage. Over tightening straps makes mask problems worse! Do not use sun screen on face -it burns in the eyes when snorkeling. Breather tube is gross to think you are sharing a used mouth piece! That said a mouth piece should be chewy and clipped to left side of mask. Tip of breather tube at snorkel bob's wasn't brightly colored so it's harder for boats to see you. No Fog Use liquid bottle is added to bill without asking, but works better than spit, just not sure why you get charged $3 more if you don't return bottle ($6 for 4 oz seems crazy). Mesh bag is great at keeping gear together. Allison was helpful on weather conditions and snorkel spots. They were out of plastic fish cards. Recommend Snorkel Maui book for a complete list of snorkel sites. Buy wet suits at Maui Sports to keep kids warm and snorkeling longer. Wear a SPF shirt instead of sunscreen that hurts fish. Worst store/service ever! Waited outside on our vacation as TWO employees helped one customer (6) people, as the line outside was a mile long. Ridiculous. Oh my god! There are a million snorkel rental places on Maui, advertising prices as cheap as a $1.50 per day. How to choose? I get pretty sketched out by the run-down shack offering me gear for a mere pittance. Do you really think those masks and snorkels that get slobbered all over are sanitized very well, if at all? Hi, my name is Lizzie, I am a skeptic and I am OCD. On recommendation from a friend my sister and I decided to rent our gear from Snorkel Bob's. They actually advertise and explain in detail their sanitation process, so I was sold. I must say Bob is a marketing and customer service genius. Multiple store locations on all(most?) of the islands in Hawaii, with interisland rental return. So you can rent on Maui, and return it on the Big Island or wherever they have a store location. Snorkel gear rental is by the day/week at three different quality and price levels. Everything gets packaged into a nice mesh bag along with a bottle of goop so your goggles don't fog up. Flotation gear and wetsuits for the timid swimmers (wetsuits are also great for the pigmentally challenged of us out there so there is no need to reapply sunscreen every damn hour). Sister and I were geared up and ready to swim with the fishes in less than 10 minutes. We were provided with a color fish guide and map of the island highlighting the best snorkel locations. Then we noticed that for beach comfort they rent 2 chairs, an umbrella, and a cooler for $30/week (we also got to pick out 2 of Bob's books thrown into to the package price. Though I'm guessing they just overestimated the demand for the books, and he's trying to get rid of them any way he can). This package deal was perfect for mom and dad who don't like eating sand on the bamboo mats we bought for $1.36 at Walmart. The high-end gear, as promised, didn't leak or cause any problems. When I returned my stuff 4 hours late, the clerk was kind enough not to charge me for an extra day, saying "I'm not going to charge you for the couple extra hours of fun you must have been out having!" Yes, the prices might be a bit more than some of other snorkel and dive shops, however Bob's is designed with the Hawaii tourist in mind, and I'm willing to pay a little extra for the fantastic service and gear that is clean and works great. read more

Our experience with this place was less than stellar. First off, we went to this store based off a magazine add, that advertised snorkel gear for 4.00 per day. In actuality, it ended up costing us over twice that amount. We left the store paying over a hundred dollars for the week for two people. This was the only place we knew of that offered special lenses and since my husband wears glasses and had never been snorkeling before we were ok with spending the extra money. The mask still leaked and fogged up constantly. But more than that, when we returned the equipment, we were told that it was being returned three hours late and therefore we owed them more money. We explained that we were never told that the gear had to be returned by a certain time just that it was before closing. Since they had our credit card on file (which they require to rent) they told us that they would be running the card for an additional pro rated amount. In fact, they ended up charging us 25% of our entire rental!!! The guy at the return counter was rude and treated us like we were idiots. When I explained to him that I didn't feel their policy was ethical especially since its on unsuspecting customers and I didn't want to pay the additional fee he said, "what do want me to pay it???" After the first day of use, I realized my fins were too tight and my husband's mouthpiece was broken. We went in to exchange them. No problems at all, no questions. Super friendly. I heart Snorkel Bob's. I heart Shelly at Snorkel Bob's on Dickenson Street even more. We stopped in on the 2nd day of our Maui trip to stock up on some rental essentials: snorkel gear, beach chairs, boogie boards... you get the drift. Well for renting all that shiz we were entitled to some discounts on activities. (Helpful #1) Shelly told us if we were going to do a luau we could book it through her and we'd get a discount. We mentioned we were probably going to do the one at our hotel (Royal Lahaina) and she quickly advised us to not do that one because it pretty much sucked. (Helpful #2) So she gave us a few recommendations of the best luau's that would be available to us (Helpful #3) so we told her we'd think about it and come back later in the week to book. So a few days passed and we decided to go back and see Shelly so we could book a luau. After telling her which one's we were thinking about doing she immediately started making some calls to see if she could get us in some of the ones that had sold out. (Helpful #4) Eventually she found us a good one and we were all set, as she took care of everything for us. (Helpful #5) I definitely urge you to go to Snorkel Bob's if you need to rent anything at all while you're in Hawaii... and if you're in Maui.... and in Lahaina, I strongly recommend this location.
