A little background about me: a middle-aged first time surfer, a basic swimmer and a big fan of basic snorkeling. Weekly workouts include gym weight lifting, kick boxing, yoga, and Lagree. And, I had a HUGE fear of wipeouts. Chyna and her friend Aina once ran a small water-sports business together, and they also volunteered teaching local kids to surf. They lost so much in the 2023 Lahaina fire, not to even mention that Aina is also a Maui firefighter. Thankfully, their families were safe. Knowing their story made Chyna's generosity, patience, and love for the ocean feel even more special. This was nothing like the two commercial surf lessons I had taken before: no photographer on shore, no rush to simply get me standing for a picture. In 2 hours, Chyna taught me how to respect and learn from the ocean: how to read the shoreline, reef and rocks, whitewater and green waves, wind, entry and exit points; how the board works; how to paddle, turn, control it, get through whitewater, and even use sound to judge an approaching wave. Most importantly, she corrected my popup technique and let ME decide whether to stand when each wave came. Once I stopped rushing and started learning the speed and timing of the wave, I was able to feel the freedom and pure energy from surfing. Even the whitewater that had scared me before stopped feeling intimidating: I didn't get knocked over ONCE! For the first time, I experienced what surfing can feel like when fear is no longer in control and I can actually listen to my body and the ocean. Chyna and Aina, I'm so grateful I found you. From the initial communication and detailed information provided beforehand to the beautiful location and overall organization, everything was seamless and professional. Theo was an absolutely fantastic instructor. As a parent, I was nervous because my son had never surfed before, but Theo immediately put us at ease. He took the time to explain his approach, including why he wanted to start on smaller waves and ease my son into the experience rather than pushing too hard too fast. That thoughtful approach made all the difference. Theo was incredibly encouraging, motivating, and patient throughout the lesson. He paid close attention to my son's energy level and knew exactly when breaks were needed, which was especially important for a young child. He struck the perfect balance between building confidence and keeping the experience fun and positive. I was also extremely grateful for Theo's communication with us as parents. He kept us informed, answered our questions, and made us feel comfortable every step of the way. Overall, this was an outstanding experience, and I cannot recommend them enough!! If you're visiting and considering surf lessons, do it. In fact, I left wishing I had booked a lesson for myself as well! I went in to look for a puddle float jumper for my daughter and they had one available for $50 (they are less than $20 anywhere else). It looked as if it had been returned and taped up. It looked a little small in the package so I asked if I could return it if it doesn't fit my daughter... the woman at the register said sure if it is in resalable condition you shouldn't have to worry about it. The next day my daughter put it on and it seemed fine until she jumped in the water, it slid half way down her body and would not stay up even after adjusting the strap, on top of that my daughter came out of the water with rashes all over her armpits and arms. The next day I came in to return the item, Nikki was the only associate in the store and when I handed her the item saying I want to return it she just looked at it and immediately without hearing me out just said I can't take it back.. it's been used. I tried explaining the situation and she just kept interrupting and saying she couldn't return the item! I am very disappointed, paying $50 for an item that hurt my child and the "manager" not having any compassion or sense of customer service to hear me out is unacceptable!

She made them feel excited and confident to put on their snorkel gear and get into the ocean. She set them up with a mask, fins, and a floater and shared with us the best place to see fish, and they did! I had already checked out The Snorkel Store website which is very informative and amazing. Signing up for the newsletter got us a discount, yay! Besides the snorkel gear we rented three Tommy Bahama beach chairs which are great because you can wear them down to the beach as a backpack. One less thing to carry. Before we left Lisa said, "Let me get you a bag of sand toys for you to enjoy after you're done snorkeling." This was so fantastic because grandchild #3 was in the car with Papa and the sand toys were an absolute hit. We will definitely make sure they're washed and returned with the all the other equipment tomorrow before 5:00pm. If you need any type of beach gear, this is the place to go! We will definitely be back again when we're on the island.

I recently visited Maui Surfboards, a great little shop tucked away in the heart of Maui, after taking a surf lesson. The owner, Wayne, is extremely helpful, super approachable, and very knowledgeable about surfing. I explained to him that I was experiencing some chafing on my legs. Wayne quickly determined that the surfboard I was using from another company was too big and wide, causing the chafing. He recommended a thin soft board that allowed me to straddle the board while waiting for waves without any chafing. The board was extremely soft, which also helped me avoid discomfort in my sternum that the original board caused. Wayne is a wealth of knowledge and extremely friendly. There's something to be said about going to a smaller, mom-and-pop shop where you can get real, tangible advice from a local who truly knows the area and surfing. This is in stark contrast to uppity stores that lack Wayne's level of experience. I highly recommend Maui Surfboards and give kudos to the owner, Wayne, who is not only knowledgeable but also has some interesting stories to tell. If you're looking for expert advice and a personal touch, this is the place to go. read more

Of all our memories of Maui, I know Wayno will be among the top. My husband and boys (11 & 14) loved him so much, I'm almost tempted to swing by and meet him myself on the way to the airport this morning. Wayno set them up with boogie boards, threw in a life vest, and gave them more interesting information about Maui then we ever read flipping through travel books or magazines. He's been here since the seventies and his knowledge is as vast as his personality is colorful. My husband would be telling us some interesting history about the island and sure enough, he'd heard it from Wayno. We broke a boogie board which Wayno was very chill and understanding about...we were taken care of. Our boys will be telling all their friends about the cool surfer rental guy on Maui and we will certainly be back in a year! We were looking at places for Kihei on our next trip but fell in love with Kapalua area and knowing we can rent from Wayno again, and learn more about the island, seals the deal for the north end! My wife and I found a hidden gem yesterday and made a new friend as well! Wayno is the raddest old school surf shop owner ever and his little surf shop had everything we needed at ridiculously low prices. I walked out of there with a full set of sick used brand name snorkel gear for $25 bucks! Fins included! Wayne dialed me in! We even signed up for surf lessons with his nephew Nick. He also is the best damn tour guide we could have ever met. He got a map out and marked all the sweet snorkel spots and told about what kind of fish life we would see and even the names of some of the turtles we would see. He also recommended some amazing restaurants and happy hours in the area. The food has been amazing at every place he recommended and has saved us a fortune! I really can't say enough great things about Maui Surfboards and Wayne. Anyways go see Wayno if you want to make your vacation a ton better. Great stories! Nice honest dude! This place is great! We have been to Maui many times and this was quite a find. A small Mom and Pop store run by locals and they are very eco-friendly, recycling what they can. We were a party of ten, two families from SoCal and Oregon and were simply looking for snorkel gear. Rentals were very reasonable and then Wayne threw in beach socks, chairs, umbrella, noodles, and boogie boards- everything we needed to beach for the week. Snorkel gear was good quality and thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. But best of all is Wayne's knowledge of the island. We went to two of the places he suggested to snorkel and both were fabulous. When he said one was a place to snorkel and see turtles, he wasn't kidding. 6-8 baby and giant turtles eating and cruising around rocks in shallow water. We noticed this local shop on the way to our condo and decided to check it out. My son wanted to rent a board and wasn't sure what board to rent. The man working was so patient with my son. He answered all his questions, recommended some great spots to surf and told us what spots to avoid. We had previously tried to rent from 808 Boards, but the man there treated my son horribly. Didn't even get up from his chair or make eye contact with him. Very rude. Boards were also higher priced there. We ended up renting a boogie board and some beach chairs as well for a great price. Lower than any other place we could find. I wish I knew beforehand that they rented snorkel gear, because we would have rented from them as well. Thanks for taking the time to help us out. Words cannot describe how awesome this place is and its owner. Wayno is extremely sociable, funny, knowledgable and most of all, sincere. We rented some longboards and a SUP at very reasonable prices. Also, there is a great collection of new and old, vintage ukelele's and guitars. Wayno even had a beautiful Koa guitarlele that we ended up buying and love it. We played it in the car and it really added an extra paradise island feel to our trip. Our boards worked great and we really liked his self-shaped old golden nugget board "Goldie". We loved talking with Wayno and if we come back to Lahaina we will surely return to Maui Surfboards. My sister and I were in Maui for the marathon last weekend and had a few days to hang out in the Lahaina area before returning to Vancouver. We initially saw the "rentals" sign and stopped by for snorkelling gear. Wayne was super helpful and showed us all the best spots to go and all the spots for free parking (very important!). We ended up going back and renting paddle boards from him the two following days and had an awesome time. Awesome shop! We had not snorkeled in a long long time and even though we had our own equipment we wanted to gain some local knowledge before venturing out. Wayno is the man to talk to. He knows all the best spots, gave us lots of tips and ideas and even loaned us a couple boogie boards when I commented about the rough surf the week we were there. I tried my best to pay him but he wouldn't take a penny....we brought his dog a bag of treats when we returned the boards as a "thank you". I agree with a previous reviewer: This is the type of surfboard/dive shop that you expect to run across in Hawaii. Wayno was very pleasant and knowledgeable. The prices were reasonable. He did recognize that some of the gear (boogie boards) was a little battered but he told us to return it when we were done. He would not charge us for broken items. I was fine with his approach: get a little more wear from the gear without the risk. Needless to say, the gear lasted throughout vacation and the returns were hassle free. it was a pleasure going to his shop and I preferred it to Snorkel Bob's. Go here first next time! read more

My family and I wanted to try standup paddle boarding and do some snorkeling - so we decided to stop in Maui Surfboards ( located across the street from the relatively new Honua Kai resort on Kaanapali beach) - we met the owner Wayno and my kids got a kick out of his dog Lilo. I always rent from Wayno at Maui surf when I'm in town. His small shop has a great selection of boards at fair prices, and provides an authentic Hawaiian experience, rather than the 'tourist trap' feel of some of the other places on the island. Wayno is a character who will always greet you with a (sometimes bad) joke. He genuinely wants you to have a good experience, and has the local knowledge to give the best advice on where to go and which board you should be riding. Cutest little shop around. Went in thinking about getting a ukulele, ended up getting a short little ukulele lesson. After that I was sold on the idea of buying one. From there Wayno told me to pick a ukulele based in the sound and let me tell you he was right. He played different ukuleles for me multiple time and I picked the same one every time. This went above and beyond customer service so I had to make my purchase from him. We even got a 10% discount! This shop made our entire trip to Maui so good. We came in for a quick rental but ended up walking out with loads of advice and a new friend in Wayno. He was thoughtful, fair in his pricing, very funny, and involved in his community! We even gave him a call to ask if we could keep the gear a couple extra days, and he was very kind and flexible with it! Best place to rent from in maui hands down! The owner gave us awesome service and was so welcoming! He was so generous and trusting - we walked in the store asking to rent a leash for our surfboard and he let us borrow it for free with no charge! We also got free surfboard wax to use. I defiantly recommend this place to rent any equipment - from surfboards, to snorkelling gear and anything in-between! The owner has an extremely friendly dog who is harmless! We went to rent snorkel equipment and did not want to pay resort prices! We were met by Wano who was very helpful and extremely friendly and was all about the bargain! We visited the shop on our first day in town and wayno was literally our guide for the rest of our trip. We rented boards and he threw in shoes, fins, and a bunch of extras to make sure we would be ready for anything. He gave us a map and pointed us to the best beaches for what we wanted to do. He'll show you how to mount the boards on your rooftop and give you tips on where to surf. I called him late on a Mon night and we were surfing by Tue morning. We had our own reef shoes, but he also offered them which are a must for certain surf spots like Launiupoko. He was a little late and had to change our rendezvous spot. But he called/texted to give me updates, and it's pretty understandable given that he's driving around the island dropping off and picking up boards. Like I said, I like his hustle and this is a great alternative to figuring out which surf shop to go to. A tad more expensive than a typical surf shop. But the delivery and pickup makes it very reasonable.

I live here and walk my dogs every day early at the beach and today (11/14/22) there was broken…read moreglass strewn across the walkway right beside the Crew hut. Worrying about my dog's paws and everyone who walks barefoot at the beach, especially children, I went over to the beach shack to see if I could borrow a brush or something to pick up the glass with. I was met with a hostile and rude reply. They refused to let me borrow a brush, or a bucket and spade to pick up the glass, said I couldn't have anything and it "wasn't their problem". Their tone and attitude was rude and downright nasty towards me!! I was shocked as I know some of the staff who work here and they are great people who care about the beach and the community and environment, and are dependably proactive in this type of situation. I picked up the glass by hand and a passing tourist stopped to help out and we hopefully caught every shard. The tourist said it was the end of a dream holiday for someone if they stood on glass as they can't swim with a wound or be on the sandy beach. I took 2 hands full of glass over to deposit in the garbage bin at the shack as it was so close. The 2 unfriendly crew members were rude and nasty again and stated "it wasn't their problem" and shouted "call the hotel if you want" as I walked away. They need a lesson in responsibility and kindness, in fact just learn some manners! They are giving the rest of the brilliant crew a bad name and it is sad for everyone involved. This 1 * is definitely not awarded to the usual crew we know who are fantastic and 5* all the time!
