Nice place, cool dudes that work there. Great prices. Why the 2 stars? Both bodyboards we rented had leashes that were inoperable. The velcro was so worn out on both of these boards that on the first wave both boards came off our hands. Completely unacceptable, leashes are cheap, why skimp there ? We only could bodyboard one day, and we couldn't bring it back that day for replacement. Just check your leashes with them, put them on and tug on it. read more

Meeting Wayno and renting a board from Maui Surfboards was a highlight of my trip to Maui. Wayno is the Dude! He is the embodiment of aloha! He treated me (an old kook from Kansas City) like a long lost friend, sharing with me amazing stories about life on Maui going back to 1963. The surfboard I rented was a great price and the surf spot Wayno sent me to was perfect. Oh yeah, and here is an example of the type of guy Wayno is: He asked if my wife would be going to the beach with me, and if so, he wanted to lend us a beach chair (no charge) so that she would be comfortable at the beach. This guy is the best! Wayno also sells a variety of new and antique Ukuleles, including some he beautifully designed himself. We've driven by Wayne-o's shop many times over the years, but we always had our own snorkeling gear with us and didn't have a need to stop. On our recent visit to Maui, a busted snorkel gave us a reason to swing by Maui Surfboards. Wayne-o took great care of us with exactly what we needed and then some. He's a wealth of knowledge on Maui, surfing and snorkeling, ukulele and slack key guitar, you name it. And he offers up all of that knowledge in a package that's the kindest and friendliest version of Jeffrey "The Dude" Lebowski you can imagine. He even loaned my kids some flotation devices for the week to really get comfortable with snorkeling (which actually gave them the confidence they needed). The next time I'm back on West Maui, I'm headed to see Wayne-o to rent a few boards and maybe pick up a few other goodies. Really nice guy. Cool little shop. Friendly dog. Spent quite a while talking about ukuleles and got some great advice on good local snorkeling spots. I also saw him spend the same time and consideration with several other customers (mostly surfers) while I was there. Ended up going back on our way out of town and buying an old uke from him. Thanks for helping us out with snorkel gear Ryan! Met up with family friends from California to snorkel off the beaches of Maui. Ryan shared the best and safest places to do so. We couldn't rent gear due to COVID, so we had to buy a kit that includes everything in a nice compact carrying case that we can take home with us. The mask fit snugly around the eyes, not a drop of water gets through and the nose piece sucks on to your nose when you dunk your face in. Good quality gear for $60. Bring cash. read more

Wayne is awesome! He's the nicest, most laid back guy with great conversations while hooking us up with 3 surf boards to rent for 24 hours. Prices are amazing! $25/board. He even threw in a boogie board for free. Every board is named after a woman. We had Baby, Poison Ivy and Mushroom Mary. He gave us a map and shared with us good surf points along the coast to check out given our skill level. Big fan of this place. Just downright friendly and authentic. You shouldn't return boards covered in sand. Anyone with half a brain and any Kuleana (responsibility) would know this. Seriously don't not rent from this guy. First of all, he has one price listed on his website than tells you a more expensive price once you are there. Than when we returned the boards, there was sand on them. So he made my boys clean the boards and scrap off all the wax before we could go. He said, " I'm just trying to teach them a lesson. It's an etiquette thing." Well buddy, your business is renting surf boards. And part of that is cleaning them after. I don't think my rental car company will have me clean the car before I return that. I've never written a bad review before today. But this guy deserves it. Great service! He had a little bit of a rush when my husband and I first came in but we were welcomed like friends. We bought a ukulele (which was tuned on the spot) and rented snorkel equipment. He also gave us boogie boards and a few great spots for snorkeling with sea turtles. When we returned the equipment, we were welcomed by his dog and island buddies. He gave us fresh coconut juice straight out of the coconut as a late wedding present. It's a surf shop, but the "Ukuleles" sign brought us in, and we weren't disappointed! Dude knows his ukuleles and will teach you to play in 5 minutes. Super-friendly, knowledgeable, and no pressure whatsoever. No mention of any timeshare or "special deals on local activities". Just ukes and surfboards. Only bummer thing about his place was waiting for 5 minutes in the left turn lane for the traffic light to change. Oh, and he has surfboards and other water toys too, plus a shop dog.
