What I liked : the food was good , the decorations were cute country with nice wood pieces . What needed big improvement: The line to order took way long for just 3 orders and 5 people about 10 minutes . The wait for a Burger and Frito pie was at close to 35 min and the place wasnt busy at least on the inside. The kitchen staff kept coming out to talk with friends . At one point I had to ask if they lost my order . I wanted to like this place more .

Smokin' Buns in West, Texas: A Pit Stop of Disappointment I've always thought critics loved throwing one-star reviews around, reveling in the gloom of it all. Turns out, I'm not much of a critic, just someone who loves great food and counts on reviews to help make sure my fellow diners and I enjoy our meals. Which is why writing this particular review pains me, but I hope it's taken as feedback for improvement. Nestled just off the highway near the Czech pastry shops, Smokin' Buns stands out like a bright red barn among the Texas horizon--a BBQ spot with a drive-thru and a homey vibe. Tired from the road, we opted to stretch our legs and dine inside. And that's where the surprises began: it's far bigger inside than it looks from the outside, a sprawling, rustic wood interior accents, complete with old-school tchotchkes, Texas news on the TV, and a good ol' Texan greeting. So far, so good. We ordered a meat plate and a burger, though some of the essential BBQ items were out of stock (midweek blues, I suppose). As we waited, the only other patron--a patient elderly lady--was still lingering, waiting for her to-go order, and the dining room's chill had us shivering a bit. Finally, her food arrived. Moments later, ours did too. Let's get down to it: if you've ever had fast-food BBQ like Dickey's or Spring Creek, Smokin' Buns is a few steps down from even that. The brisket was dry and old, tasting more like jerky than the tender, juicy slices one expects. The sausage? Picture thick-cut Eckrich straight from the microwave. The "queso" was nothing but a basic Rotel mix. Then came the sides. The mac and cheese? Pure cafeteria flashback--watery and flavorless. The bread was just two pieces of plain Mrs. Baird's, no butter, no toasting, no love. The BBQ sauce tasted suspiciously store-bought (my bet's on Kraft). The most vibrant part of the plate was the side toppings: fresh red onions and pickles. Then there was the burger--a bit of redemption, but with toppings so cold they felt slapped on as an afterthought. The onion rings were the best part, and the truffle fries missed the mark entirely, more like limp fries than anything worthy of "truffle." Before leaving, I thought we'd give dessert a chance and bought an apple mini pie. That was the final straw--the crust was raw, and the glazed apple slices tasted canned, disappointing to the core. To sum it up, this felt like food bought at the store and served at a potluck, trying to pass off as homemade. And, like any potluck with fake home-cooking, everyone caught on quick. As we paid, the cashier suggested the milkshake, "It's the best I've ever had," she said, homemade and all. Lesson learned for next time: just ask the cashier what to order. With its Texas hospitality, charming interior, and even a clean restroom, Smokin' Buns has its appeal. But we came for the food, and even the flies barely gave it a glance. If this place reinvented itself as a burger, milkshake, and onion ring joint, they might just be onto something. As for the rest? Maybe a bit of soul and seasoning are in order.

Talk about hospitality at its finest! I travel a lot and I review a lot of places, if I could give this place 10 stars I would, if you don't stop here you're missing out! The service from literally everyone working including the cook was phenomenal! Food was excellent and the portions were huge! The environment was very inviting with old school movies playing in black and white, I will be stopping here again next time I'm passing through!

Good burger, good price, great service. I was driving to Fort Worth and getting hungry. I checked Yelp and saw this place. However I was already running very late so I kipped my dinner that night. Today as I was heading back to Houston I decided I wanted to try to find this place. I didn't remember where it was on Yelp just about an hour outside of Fort Worth. I tried looking as I was driving and couldn't find anything. I stopped to get gas about 10-15 miles up the road and figured I'd give it one last chance to try to find somewhere to get a late lunch. Low and behold, this place popped up. As I pulled into the parking area it was a little confusing and I ended up driving off the curb. Thud... I hope my car is okay. Perhaps it could be marked a little better. I came inside decided to try the double cheeseburger. $17 as a combo seems fair enough. I noticed they had housemate pickles and Dr pepper grilled onions so why not throw those on the burger. The girl working the register was very friendly and patient as I tried to make decisions such as which cheese, which toppings, and what bun. I went with the jalapeno cheddar bun, and pepper jack cheese. None of it was particularly spicy. I opted for the onion rings which came with a Chipotle mayo that complemented them nicely. I was all ready to give a 4, as it's very solid but not out of this world. Then from out of the kitchen comes a young man to offer to refill my sweet tea. Between that and the great attitude at the front, this was a level of surface I just did not expect but surely should be rewarded.

Passing through, loved the name so we stopped for lunch. It does have a drive-thru but we opted to dine in. The decor is cute and employee were very polite but the food was expensive and a B- at best. 2 of 3 kids finished their corndogs but these fry loving kids only at 3-4 fries each. The onion rings are Definitely frozen and zero flavor. The burgers were ok but not memorable. It has potential w/ the fun name, decor and nice staff but the food wasn't anything special.

this is a cute local hole in the wall- they have burgers and bbq- i can't say how the bbq is because we only had burgers- the burger was good though- they make their own pickles so that's a nice touch. the prices aren't too bad. its actually a fairly large inside seating area- great customer service. good flavors!

Great place for a burger! I pulled up and it seemed as if they were closed because there was like 2 cars in the parking lot. Decent size place on the inside. They had college football games going on when we walked in, which was nice. The staff made some very nice recommendations for us and was very helpful. I will say, they aren't very fast for getting your food to you, but it is worth it. I went specifically for the burger, but they have loaded baked potatoes and loaded frito pies. And when I say loaded, I mean loaded. They had like sausage, brisket, chili, and a whole bunch more of topping on these bad boys. They looked extremely good, which is what I'll probably get next time. The burgers have fresh meat that was made into patties. They definitely aren't frozen, which is probably one reason it takes a little longer on the food to make. Around, it's just a great burger. The sides are all very good to. Can't go wrong with any of them. Can't wait to drop in again here.

Headed south on I-35. Read the reviews and decided to stop for a burger. We were not disappointed and will be back! Bacon Cheese Burgers were fantastic! The onion rings were very good as well!! Even the tea was good! Definitely give it a try! Got a kick out of the sign in the VERY CLEAN bathroom!

Where to start?? We came across this restaurant by accident. We were putting gas, headed back to get on the freeway and we saw that it was open.. but only had one car. So, we decided to check it out! The buns, although cheddar jalapeño, have this sweet soft taste to them. The bacon, is a super thick cut with just the right amount of fat and meat and saltiness. Typing this out I can still taste it. The fries had a nice bite to them, with packed in flavor. The ranch was delicious and the veggies on the burger were crisp and cold- I honestly love that! The service, was amazing! The cashier was so sweet, so accommodating- especially knowing this was our first time. So helpful! She continued to come check on us, which was a plus. You do order and pay upfront and the food is brought out to you. It was a small wait- but so worth it. The location, is small and super comfortable! It feels like home and it's very welcoming! We're from Corpus Christi, but I promise we will be back! Soo soo good. Side note- they also have milkshakes and bbq as well as additional side items to choose from.

If your stopping over here for Slovaceks gas station, stop and get a burger here They have a small selective menu but that's what makes these little places easy going. * Dine-in & drive through very convenient if you don't have the time.

The food is great! Don't let the size of the outside detour you. It's super cute inside. The onion rings, Parmesan fries, and Dr.Pepper caramelized onions are to die for! We live, about, an hour north of Smokin Buns and have been through West twice in recent wedding dress shopping. Ate here both times! Soooo good! Yummie!! read more

We were looking for good burgers on a trip from Fort Worth to College Station, and we happened to find Smokin Buns en route. All 5 star reviews, so we had to check it out. Hands down the best burgers we've had in a long time! Service was great and food even better! Can't recommend it enough. Forget fast food burgers. These are real burgers! What an amazing burger! We were traveling from Dallas to Austin and just happened upon this little gem. We enjoyed the double cheeseburger on the jalapeño cheddar bun and it was delicious. The kind of burger you stop again for. I'm only glad they aren't closer to me because it would become an addiction! Everyone was so nice, the service was exceptional, and the place is as cute as a button. We highly recommend the stop! read more

Kid loved the corn dog. Wife and I loved our cheeseburger. The hamburgers must be smashed style because they have a nice crispy edge around them. The buns were soft and full of taste, not bready. Onion rings were fried perfectly, not soggy with oil. Fries were crispy, and seasoned well. I also need to give props to the awesome chocolate shake we shared. Overall a great little local burger joint. Will come again! read more

All was excellent tasting food They have a wonderful burger that in a nice blend of beef & pork, it's super moist and "The Best Burger "for miles around. The brisket Potato is also a very good choice and my favorite with lots of toppings it's really enough for a small family. This family owned restaurant has always friendly service is super clean and a great atmosphere with no blaring noise or TV's to distract you from enjoying your family or friends. I had an emotional reaction to your burger. I've been spending a lot of time on the road, and the options are very similar and not great. Every burger chain in america it seems is just okay, set to meet expectations, but not more. From the moment I stepped in to Smokin' Buns and was warmly greeted I could sense that the place was decorated with intention and care. This place means the world to someone and you can feel it when you look around. The people were happy to be working and focused on customer service. The bathroom was clean and with just a hint of personality. The staff seemed genuinely happy. Maybe they know they have something special? It's not a fancy place, and a burger is not a complicated thing, but the small details.... The brioche bun is as good as any bun I have ever had (this includes you Gordon Ramsey). The smash style burger is simple, but the meat was fresh and the patty perfectly seasoned. A variety of classic cheeses are available as well as some more adventurous options. The pickles tasted home made and just different enough to set the flavor aside and above most everything else around. The veggies were fresh and clean tasting. This looks like a road side dive, the food should not be this high quality. In a culinary world that seems dead set on efficiency and marketing over taste, I witnessed something beautiful. Art for the sake of art. Greatness for the sake of greatness. Let this be a lesson for us all; just because something is simple doesn't mean that it can't be made to matter. The details and quality were so far ahead of what is necessary in this location that it left me feeling, if only for a moment, nothing short of loved. read more

I gave it 4 stars because drink station need to be available to refill drinks rather than wait on cashier to get them when she/he is busy taking orders. The food is really good and cashier friendly. Just need to have drink station for customers-would make cashier job easier too. read more

We normally stop at West to get our usual sausage kolache but since it was lunch time we saw this new burger place had opened up. So glad we made a choice to come here instead. My wife doesn't eat as much and I believe the owner was the one who helped us today, he let her order off the kids menu, which she loved her cheese burger and onion rings! Now as for myself, I ordered the jalapeño sour dough bun cheeseburger with pepper Jack cheese they offer a good amount of toppings I added grilled onions jalapeños and mushrooms. Also had the home made truffle parmesan fries! Amazing does not begin to describe the overall flavor of this burger! You owe to yourself to stop in this place, we didn't even get to try the milk shakes but if they are like everything else here you won't be disappointed. This will be a regular stop for us now! read more

I wanted to like this place SO much more. The service is friendly and the food is good but to wait just about over an hour for our food was ridiculous. Not even half of my food was brought out, 2 out of my 4 children didn't get to eat because their food NEVER came out. I was able to pull food from the 3 plates we did receive out of 7 we should have had. I did receive a partial refund so that was appreciated. When I asked about the food I was told the computers crashed... Smokin' Buns if you read these reviews my advice to you as a business owner is when you have complications in the BOH (bqck of house) and that issue is going to cause a delay in customers receiving their meals in a timely manner... walk out to the floor and talk to the tables. Let them know what's going on. Don't keep them waiting and don't make it to where they have to ask YOU where their food is. It's unprofessional. So like I said, I wanted to like this place more and I wish I had the time to wait for an Oreo milkshake! Those are my favorite. read more

On our way home to Austin from Dallas we stopped at our usual West, TX exit for gas and snacks. As we pulled off we noticed a newly renovated building touting some serious burgers! Being burger junkies we had to try out this new local spot. The only thing more incredible than the burgers was the service of the husband/wife team running this establishment! Menu options are extensive...brioche or Jalapeño cheddar cheese buns, various cheese options, single or double patty, and a nearly infinite amount of toppings including Dr Pepper caramelized onions! Burgers were delicious, toppings were fresh and plentiful, splendidly messy! Fresh cut fries were perfection. Crisp and perfectly seasoned on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside. Onion rings were top notch. If great people and delicious burgers interest you at all, then Smokin' Buns is a must stop!!! read more

We stopped by on a whim as we passed through town and highly recommend you do the same. The burgers and fries were 100% worth the stop. The husband had the bacon and said it was great. I would go back just for the pickles on my burger. But, the best thing here was the service. Made to order by definition isn't ready in a flash, but the folks working there could not have been more amazing. 10 out of 10. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. read more

Folks here are putting out a quality product. Burgers anyway you like with a jalapeño cheddar bun. BBQ brisket is perfectly smoked and is good enough to stand on its own. Sauce not necessary but add it for a bit of sweetness. Beans are a great recipe addition. Awesome stop off the interstate and will be our new go-to. Those kolache places are nothing but greasy dough with a hot dog stuck in the middle. read more

I stopped in here on the way from Dallas to Austin. I didn't want BBQ and I didn't want kolaches but was settled on Slovacek's. As I'm pulling in I see Smokin Buns and decided a burger was what I needed. The place is small and clean. The staff friendly. I ordered a bacon double cheeseburger and fries with a drink for roughly $16. The bacon was tasty and very thick. Like almost as thick as a pork chop. It was good for me, but some customers may prefer thinner slices. The burger was a little overcooked, but I never told them how I wanted it, so they get a pass for that. It was otherwise delicious but I wish they would have out the mayo and mustard on for me. No, I'm not lazy but q burger has a super short shelf life. Disassembling it to spread on condiments cools off the bun and makes a mess. Please, just do it for me???? Otherwise delicious. One of the better burgers I've had on I35. Sadly, the fries were unsuccessful. They were seasoned properly, and cold, as well as soggy. I realize that is the way most Texans prefer them but seriously this was a swing and a miss. They are the reason for 4 stars. Overall I'd recommend this place but guys, please fix your fries. That would elevate this to 5 stars and I'd rave about it. read more

This place is absolutely amazing. Not only is everyone extremely friendly but the food is out of this world. Lots of places to sit and my kids loved looking at all pictures of the animals on the walls. We are from CA and this is exactly what we thought of when we imagined Texas BBQ. the burgers were over cooked, overpriced. the buns were greasy, I asked for fried onions and jal , really didn't get any and if there was some it was mush and overcooked. it has a friendly vibe. this is not a place that I would go back to. read more

It was obvious that one man sitting nearby was a regular, since she called him by name, That seemed like a good sign! My husband ordered chicken strips, fries and green beans. I ordered the liver and onions (which I can seldom find), their "Czech fries," (with a menu description of special seasoning), and green beans. The food arrived fairly promptly, and immediately I was perplexed. The chicken tenders looked like pre-formed frozen patties, very flat. The green beans were loaded with onions, which my husband hates, and he never would have ordered if he'd known that. He immediately slid his bowl of beans over to me. My Czech "fries" were definitely not fries. They were essentially scalloped potatoes with sliced onions. They tasted fine, but whatever special seasoning they used was hard to taste. I do have to say that the liver was delicious, perfectly cooked, and the cream gravy I requested was the perfect addition. My husband said his chicken strips tasted ok, but they were certainly not the type of strips we're used to from local restaurants. My overall opinion is that this is a place that's been there a long time, locals are used to eating there and comfortable with being recognized, and don't care that the interior just looks tired and dated. It wasn't a bad experience, but we wouldn't make another 88-mile trip back to West just to eat there.

For sweet, I love the cream cheese, apple, and cherry. For savory, you can't go wrong with the sausage kolaches. Pro tip: if you ask, they'll warm them up for you, which makes them even better. Even when the line wraps around this legendary little store, the service is impressively fast. The line moves quickly, so you're never waiting as long as it looks. These are easily the best kolaches I've had in Texas so far, and I don't see that changing anytime soon. Expect many more future stops from me.

Smokin' Buns in West, TX is definitely worth a visit for their delicious, freshly prepared food. The handmade beef patties in their burgers were well-seasoned and cooked to perfection, and the fries were equally impressive--crispy, flavorful, and seasoned just right. While there was a slight wait for the food, it's clear this was because everything is made fresh, which is always a plus. My only disappointment was with the drink size, as it felt like there was more ice than soda. Unfortunately, the ice cream machine wasn't working during our visit, so I didn't get to try a shake, which I'd been looking forward to. Stopping at Smokin' Buns for lunch was a happy accident on our way home from formalizing teacher retirement in Austin. Ricki, the beautiful soul that owns this cute and tidy establishment, was delightful and happy to share her secret for the delicious cornbread she serves. All her employees seemed like family that enjoyed being there and invested in our enjoying our meal.
