Health Camp feels like stepping back in time to a classic American burger joint, and I really enjoyed this place. I ordered a double burger, fries, and a vanilla shake. The burger was very good. The beef had great flavor and the double gives you a nice, hefty amount of meat. The bun was a little on the dry side, but nothing terrible. Their house sauce is AWESOME--just the right amount of spice and flavor. My biggest complaint: they put the sauce on the bottom of the burger. That's a big no-no for me! Sauce belongs on top. You want that spicy kick hitting the roof of your mouth first and then working its way down through the burger. It sounds like a small thing, but it makes a difference! Burger: 7.5/10 The fries were average. Nothing wrong with them, but nothing particularly memorable either. Fries: 5/10 The vanilla shake was exactly what a classic vanilla shake should be. Nothing fancy, just cold, creamy, and delicious. What more could you ask for? Shake: 8.5/10 The two ladies working the register were incredibly friendly. 10/10 for the staff. My only gripe with the checkout experience is being asked for a tip at a counter-service restaurant where you refill your own drinks and throw away your own trash. I'm just not a fan of that trend. Overall, I really like Health Camp. Simple burgers, simple shakes, an old-school atmosphere, and a place that's been doing this for generations. Worst experience at Health Camp ever. We're parents of Baylor kids, and between us and our kids, we have NEVER had a bad experience at Health Camp--until today. A few months ago, they started this strange practice of serving partial orders. If you have a family of four, they'll call your number when one or two meals are ready, and then you wait another 7-10 minutes for the rest of the order. By the time everyone has their food, half the family has either finished eating or their food is getting cold. TOTALLY CRAZY!!!!!! Today was much worse than just the separated orders. The burgers came out hot but were BURNT to a crisp. The onion rings were burnt as well, while the tots and fries were embarrassingly undercooked. They were barely warm, and a couple actually had that still-frozen bite in the middle. The service didn't help. The kid taking orders and handling the phone looked like he had just rolled out of bed. When I asked the girl working the shakes about the second half of our order, she was zero help. Instead of trying to find out what was going on, she literally took a big step sideways and disappeared behind the shake machines. What makes this so disappointing is that Health Camp has always been one of those Waco places we could depend on. It can be hard to find somewhere open on Sundays, and we always knew Health Camp would be a reliable choice. Unfortunately, after today--and with the partial-order issue becoming a regular thing--that confidence is gone. I have been wanting to try this place for a while after seeing pictures on Facebook. It didn't disappoint. This is an old restaurant and very small inside with around 10 booths. Even though it is older, it was still very clean. Employees were very friendly. We ordered super burgers, onion rings and tater tots. Everything was really good, hot, and fresh. Our burgers were juicy and flavorful. The tots and onion rings were crispy and cooked to perfection. The only complaint was the traffic circle to get here. They are a bit on the pricey side in my opinion. We didn't get drinks, only burgers and sides, and my total was $32 after tax. The level and selection of shakes and malts here are worth coming to visit alone! The burgers here are a grease spoon but come on - that is why you are here, right?! I came here to eat a quick burger, get some fries down, and wash it back with a delicious classic strawberry milkshake without shame. There was a short wait to get our order in but it was lunch time on a summer Friday so it was busy. We didn't mind the wait though as the service was friendly. Every time a table was available I noticed a staff member would come around and reset it for you and do a quick wipe down for you. The space here can be tight for some but it honestly all goes with the atmosphere and throwback feel of Health Camp. I felt like I was dining in a 1950's-era of quick meal (or what we know as 'fast food) before we continued our IH 35 traveling up to north Texas area. Booths are cute and picturesque. Restrooms are really small and only one so there might be a wait if it is busy here. The parking lot is shared with other spots around Health Camp but no big deal. You should find a spot to park in safely and come in to grab your order. The drive-thru line was bonkers too but seemed to go by fast. I first heard of this spot 24-25 years ago from friends who went to Baylor. But since I've never spent time in Waco, I never made the time to come and try it. Back to the main event - the onion rings had a tasty breading with a nice crunch. The burger was an old school, thin diner burger that nobody does right anymore. Nice flavoring with just a little char. The buns were buttered and golden brown. I loved the vibe inside - the artwork of other classic spots throughout Texas planted the idea to make a road trip and try them all (sadly, I know several are now closed). This is another review in my Waco Burgers series. My son and I are hitting places around Waco to try their Burgers. Health Camp is another Waco institution. Slou Stein and Jack Schaevitz opened HC in '48 as a food truck. A year later they opened the current "circle" location. There are two other location now at Union Grove and Union Hall. We went to OG in the circle. The place is small but clean with typical decor. You order and pay at the counter. Drinks are self serve and seating is sparse but adequate for a small crowd. Kiara was fast and friendly taking our order. We went with our usual. I ordered a cheeseburger, mayo all the way and my son ordered a Bacon Cheeseburger plain and dry. We both pair fries with our meal. The highlight for me was the soft, sweet bun. The crispy fries were also a definite plus. "All the way" on my burger meant pickles and onions. I'm not sure if that is the standard or a mistake on my order. We both agreed that the meat, while good, was not as flavorful as some other stops we've made in our journey. Jacob wondered if the patty was frozen or fresh. We arrived at 6:30. By the time we left, the place was full. I would recommend Health Camp to anyone needing a burger fix.
