I've been wanting to check out Smokey's for a while, as this Korean-owned counter is supposedly known for their potato wedges and wings. We went for: +the popular order of the 3 Wings and Potatoes - we opted to top it with salt, pepper, ketchup, and mumbo sauce; while the chicken was fresh out of the fryer and was crispy, it was just okay in taste compared to other fried chicken joints in the DC area; the potato wedges were just mediocre as well +the steak & cheese - while generously filled, wasn't a fan of the flavors +and, the half & half - the favorite of the order; it was expertly made - super refreshing and tasty! Service was no-nonsense and friendly, and there was a constant stream of patrons coming in for a pickup as well as to-go orders of the wings and potatoes. Great hospitality...she's amazing! I've only been once and tried the potatoes, wings, &bacon cheeseburger. Service was a little slow because it's just one "young" lady cooking, taking orders and check out but I enjoyed chatting with her while I waited for her to cook my food. I love me some Smokies. Whenever I'm in DC that's my spot. It's a little hole in the wall, but the food is amazing.

This neighborhood gem is my go to place for some fried chicken wings w/ mumbo sauce! I typically get the combo which comes with fried potatoes. I know some places serve French fries with their chicken wings but they're all potatoes. Lol. I think I like em better with the potatoes anyway. I have also tried their steak and cheese and that was really good. My order is normally always made fresh because they're busy and constantly cooking to fulfill orders. The wait can be long but definitely worth it. Sometimes it's worth calling ahead. The mumbo sauce is so good and they're pretty generous with giving customers more than enough for their meal. Now we know how some places can be a bit stingy! The restaurant is family owned (mom + daughter). They're really nice and pretty comical. I don't think I've been there and haven't left without laughing. It's always great to support small businesses and especially those that are minority owned. read more

My friend was told by a family member to try out Mambo Wings. So naturally we sought out a restaurant location that offered the infamous sauce. Let me tell you... Smokey's is the place to go. Your whole meal is an experience. This is a family tan establishment and the daughter is phenomenal. Great personality with such a quick wit. Personable and hilarious. This place was recommended to me by a friend who owns a different takeout restaurant and it lived up to the recommendation for sure. I had the a medium sized pit beef done mid-rare with tiger sauce and raw onion. It was bangerang! The beef by itself was tender and juicy and still warm after my 10 minute drive home. The tiger sauce was as expected, a creamy horseradish blend that had kick but didn't kill the sandwich. I also sampled their mild and spicy BBQ sauces which we're both thin but very tasty. Topped that off with an overflowing regular sized side of fresh cut fries and gravy and I was in heaven. This is a hidden gem of NW DC. Whenever I sneak away from my office and head uptown, Ms Angela Lee is there with a smiling face. She knows some folks by name. She recognizes me only because I come there once or twice a month. This is not a place that you want to come to if you're watching your weight - but the food is good. The tiny little place with four seats and greasy orange floors has been in the Washington Post. Let that speak to the merit of the mumbo sauce and the crunchiest chicken wings and potato wedges. The owner has been working there about 15 years, but the restaurant itself has been in the family for about 47 years. Being from out of state, I had no idea what in the world mumbo sauce was, but boy am I glad I do now. Smoky's makes some of the best mumbo sauce out there! They make it in house and it's fantastic on the wings and potato wedges. There aren't a lot of people sitting in the place, but if there are, they're usually regulars. The line goes out the door though, people love taking their food elsewhere to nosh and get greasy, I'm guessing the privacy of their own homes. There is a small bar that you can enjoy your food onsite but I consider this more of a take your food and go place. Staff was friendly, while I waited for my food, the two ladies making the food and taking orders appeared to be really comfortable with what I assume were a couple of regulars that were eating at the bar. Small menu but they provide most basic breakfast staples. I went with the chicken and waffle, two perfectly breaded chicken wings, nicely fried and well seasoned and an equally delicious waffle. The older Korean lady in the back is always making a fresh batch of chicken and fries. She must use some secret recipe because this place was packed on a random Thursday. I stopped by for lunch. A coworker and I shared a fried fish sandwich and I had the 2 fried chicken combo with fries. Fish is nothing to special. Chicken was tender and had a strong buttermilk taste. Mambo sauce had a nice tangy kick to it. If your in the NW area this is a great spot for lunch. Service is very quick and there is plenty of street parking. Sooooo I've been going to Smokey's since I was in junior high (I'm now in my 40's), so I've eaten there almost all my life. Since Ms. Lee sold the place it has gone way, way down. I went in yesterday and the place smelled of burnt dirty grease. I don't eat meat so all I order are potato wedges and occasionally breakfast. It was horrible, the wedges were greasy and the mambo sauce is definitely not the same. The lady who was working the grill was friendly but she's not like Ms. Lee or Maria (no longer there) who would cook your food to perfection. I guess all good things must come to an end and for me the Smokeys that Ms. Lee ran will be etched in my memory for having some of the best wedges and mambo sauce in DC. read more

They have some new people working there which is ok, but I must say the quality has slipped a bit. The food tastes good still, but I've noticed them charging people differently and personally I notice that the serving sizes are MUCH SMALLER. I used to barely be able to finish 3 wings and potatoes, but now they give out very small wings with barely any meat on them and way fewer potatoes. They used to have to use a rubber band to keep the box closed, but now even with 4 wings and potatoes, there is a bunch of empty space in the box so no rubber band is required. I prefer to give my money to the smaller local businesses in my neighborhood, but I think I'll be staying away from Smokies for awhile. The value of the food has dropped and there is a Popeyes just 3 blocks away which feels like better value right now: their serving sizes at Popeyes are consistent and at this point, they give more food than Smokies for the money. I hope Smokies get's their act together, because I used to eat there a lot and the value was great, but I guess we'll have to wait and see if things return to how the used to be when the original owner worked there :( read more

Best mambo sauce anywhere. This is a DC staple and if you want Uptown's blend of brown mambo sauce, this is the prime spot to get it. If you want that sweet red stuff they call mambo sauce on the southside, you'll have to ask someone from southeast etc where to go but if you're from uptown and like that brown savory goodness this is still the spot that does it like no other. read more
