Smokey's BBQ is the business! I tried the chopped chicken and brisket, it was so flavorful. You know it's good bbq when you start thinking about how seasoned the pit is that the meat was cooked on. You can smell this barbecue hundreds of feet away, like when you're at the light, your mouth will start watering from all the smoky goodness in the air. Parking is easy here, pull up, order your food, decide if you want to eat it hot right there or take it home. I dined in, service was fast with a smile. On the way to the airport I saw a line of smoke coming out of a building... when I realized it was coming from a place called Smokey's BBQ I knew I had to pull over to try. It was definitely worth it! The Boston butt pork and beef brisket were both phenomenal. The pork was tender and juicy and the beef also had really good flavor. My favorite side was the red rice but also enjoyed the Mac and cheese and coleslaw. Really great classic BBQ that came out fast and hot, and service was really friendly as well! read more

I am NOT giving this place 1 STAR!!! I wish I could give NEGATIVE STARS!!! My husband told me the food here was awesome, it might be but I ordered a medium side of Brunswick Stew, 1 lb of Bar b que & some sausage. We were charged almost $26.00. The Brunswick Stew is in a real small coffee cup. The lady said she didn't even charge us for it. Then they added an unapproved tip to our bill! I have had opportunity to eat at Smokey's on a handful of occasions and one thing that I can say is that it is consistent. I have had sandwiches, chicken and ribs and all are very tasty and the baked beans are very good and one of the best I have had. The BBQ sauces that they offer are mild and hot or you can do a mix. It is a rustic environment with one loud TV mounted in a corner offering limited seating and if they are busy be prepared to wait for your food. The staff has always been courteous and willing to provide advice if you are overwhelmed by the options. There are a number of option in the Savannah area for BBQ and you would be missing out if you did not try this one. read more

The food here is GOODT. No, this isn't a posh establishment, and that's the only reason that I didn't give 5 stars. My service has always been great, whether ordering via phone to go, or dining in. I typically get the beef sandwich special with some greens, but the chicken is good, too, as well as the pork ribs. I don't know how the mild sauce is, but the spicy sauce is great, and actually has a good kick. If you like smoked meats without a lot of fuss, this is the place. read more

I must say I really enjoyed my food and appreciated the graciousness of the owner. I arrived when they closed (totally my fault) I thought I could make it there in time. I was told very nicely to call ahead and they will hold my order for me next time. I was given a member and got into my car. That's when a lovely young lady flagged me down to tell me The owner said she will fix me plate! How awesome was that? I ordered the ribs, red rice and greens. Yum! My college brought me to Smokey's bbq. It is truly a hidden gem! Really flavorful bbq chicken and bbq sauce!

My wife and I went to Smokey's BBQ in Garden City off of Highway 21 yesterday and this is the presentation we received or that my wife received rather. Mind you I've cleaned it up a lot so it looks a lot better than how we received it. My wife ordered a pulled pork sandwich, mac n cheese and brunswick stew and instead of the establishment putting her stew on a separate container they decided to put it in the same container her other food was in (which was an intentional act) making her sandwich soggy and ruined her mac n cheese. Besides that upon speaking very respectfully to both of the black ladies that worked there when she ordered her food in return my wife was treated with the utmost hate, malcontent, disdain and disrespect. I honestly don't play the racist card at all period but this is a deliberate and racist act. So if you're an interracial couple please think twice before visiting this restaurant, it's a pure disgrace. Makes me feel ashamed to be black in this Godless world. read more

We came here on the suggestion of one of the front desk people working at our nearby hotel and we loved, loved, Smokey's for everything about it: it's rusticity, it's welcoming vibe (they let me poke around the front room where the smoker is to take pictures), it's home-smoked barbecue and home-made sauces, desserts, paper plates and plastic forks, the sincerity and dedication to good food by the family members who run it (even the dad who works at the nearby paper mill, then stops in for dinner, and time with his wife, grandson, and son), and, of course, a terrific, messy, generous meal of perfectly smoked chicken, baked beans, french fries, mac and cheese, and a couple of slices of bread. The drink of the day is super-sized and sweeeet! Lots of folks leaving their jobs at the nearby docks come on for their take-out meals so, we knew we could count on good prices and great food. The dad told us that they hope to expand and update the fairly shabby building, the smoker, and the dining area come this spring. I can count on one hand how many times I've eaten at Smokey's. The barbecue is decent - the pork ribs are tender and seasoned well, and you don't break the bank. I have gotten one pound of ribs - meat only because the sides are hit or miss - and that's enough to share with the Husband. That sets me back just a little under $15. So, why just two stars? Let's just say, I have "fired" good doctors because of how their support staff treated me. So, to quit a restaurant over poor customer service isn't really much of a hardship. I try to make it a point to support the so-called "minority-owned" businesses because, in all honesty, I want them to succeed. I overheard a staff member explain to a customer that Smokey's is a family-owned business that's been operating for about 27 years - BRAVO! HOWEVER, the common concern I share with those like me who also try to support these businesses is that the staff/owners seem to treat SOME OF us like they are doing us a FAVOR, while some of the OTHERS of us get the full-on shuck and jive treatment. My advice? Less shuck and jive (well...because it's super-embarrassing), and more of treating ALL of your customers like they are welcomed in your establish and not a minor irritation. Smokey's is convenient because it's on my way home from work. But customer service is a deal-breaker for me, and there are just way too many REALLY GOOD barbecue joints (like the one less than one mile down the street from y'all) that serve finger-licking goodness without a side order of funky attitude. read more

Traveling in from Atlanta for an event my friend and I were hungry and looking for something good to eat. Smokey's BBQ was close but also had a decent rating. We figure the locals would know what's good to eat around here. It's a little home shack at the front end of a plaza. Entering the place was like entering someone s enclosed home patio. There were kids running around and a series of picnic bench style tables with hand sanitizers and condiments. My friend and I placed our orders at the front window. We took at seat at one of the tables and were served within minutes. She ordered the rib plate and I had the combo of ribs and chicken. We both had macaroni and green beans for sides. The macaroni was not cheesy. The pasta was over cooked and the cheese was pasty. It lacked flavor that not even black pepper could correct. The green beans were poured straight from the can. My friends portion had butter. Mine did not. The bread the topped the plate with wasn't even recast toast or toasted for that matter. The rinds were tender and fell off the bone although thing prices. The barbecue sauce was great! Our favorite part of the meal to be clear. They offered mild medium or spicy. We had the medium but it wasn't spicy more tangy and sweet which was perfect. The chicken was stale to put it simply. It was NOT prepared fresh. It was possibly 4+ days old. The flesh was dry and lacked the smoked flavor of chicken fresh off the grill. We also noticed my food took a while longer to be served than my friends and when it was brought to the table it was piping hot as if nuked in the microwave prior to. My friends plate was not this hot upon delivery. The atmosphere is like a home living room. This place is obviously family owned and the women came out from the kitchen ever so often to discipline the children running around. Screaming at them to take a seat and not get up. Not great for business but the other patrons didn't seem to mind. One by one locals came in and picked up phone or To-go orders and left. Not sure what they were ordering but I'm sure it wasn't the chicken. Here's the kicker: The back portion of the house also serves as a hair salon. As my friend and I left we noticed a woman walking out the back ramp of the house with a fresh hairdo and signage saying hair studio. Funny, I wouldn't want to have a fresh hairdo smelling of bbq smoke. The kids came outside and although advised by myself and my friend not to run out in the street or behind the car they did it anyway. Later that night I had a seriously vile stomach flu. I don't deny it was the chicken. If you eat here....stick to the ribs, you'll definitely enjoy the bbq sauce. Oh and don't run over any kids backing out of their parking lot. read more

If the smell alone of the meat smoking does not draw you in immediately then once you step inside of this quaint Barbecue Shack you are immediately going to be hooked on the offerings of this wonderful little restaurant. Family owned and operated these ladies know their barbecue and know how to make it well. They offer many choices of sandwiches dinners meats and sides and even a few desserts that looked like they were made in someone's grandmother's kitchen. My husband had the chopped beef sandwich with the collard greens and I had chopped pork sandwich with the mac and cheese. I chose there mild BBQ sauce but I have to say it had a bit of a kick to it. It wasn't hot but it did have some spiciness to it. My husband, on the other hand, opted for the hot barbecue sauce and was in for a wide Awakening at the end of his meal when he got a good bite a probably a ghost pepper LOL. He does love hot sauce and said it was delicious but next time he said he would go with the mild or a mix of the two which hour waitress recommended. The greens were fabulous and cook just perfectly with some ham hock and not drowned in juices. The mac and cheese with creamy and delicious and only needed a tad bit of pepper to it. Since we are local to the area, we will definitely be visiting often and trying out more dishes on their menu like the ribs that we're definitely calling to me when I saw someone else order them. Friendly people doing good work and it's a great way to support folks in the community. I can't believe I'm the first to review this place. I know there's a lot of good bar b que in the South but is there so much that everyone has overlooked Smokey's? So, in this review, no stories or analogies. Just the facts. I spotted it from the window of my rental car shuttle. I asked the driver and he gave me the thumbs up so I added it to my list of places to try while in Savannah. It looks like it's been there a while. Maybe alittle run down but it look like the kind of place you're gonna find authentic barbeque. You'll see it from Augusta Road but to actually get into the parking lot, you'll need to enter from Bell, next to the CVS and across from Food Lion. I got there just before closing (8:00 pm) on a Thursday night and since it looked like they were getting ready to leave, I got my order to go. Even at that late hour, the service was friendly and they walked me through the menu and answered any question I had about the sides and sauces. I went with the large pork ribs meal with baked beans and brunswick stew. The sides were pretty good but the pork was the star. This was my first trip to Georgia so I wasn't sure what to expect. What I got was perfectly smoked ribs with a subtle savory rub and a style of sauce I've never experienced. It was a creamy mustard based sauce but I think it had a touch of tomato and vinegar. Smokey's brother-in-law, who took my order, asked if I wanted the hot or mild sauce. When I asked him how hot was hot, he turned around and told them to pack both. I'm glad he did. Hot isn't that hot but it builds up. The mild is pretty mild. But, I was dipping in the hot until my mouth burned, switching to mild to cool it off, and back to hot. They also make their own peach cobbler, so I had to get an order of that too. It didn't disappoint. I wish I lived closer. But, next time I'm in Savannah, I'll be back. read more

We took some take out last night at around 7:30pm. The women taking our order was not very helpful. She seemed almost mad to be working there. Ribs were dry and under seasoned, granted I ask for sauce on the side. They gave quarts of sauce on the side. I am guessing the one that had copious amounts of black pepper was the spicy one. My wife enjoyed the Coleslaw and said it was fresh. The brisket was very dry and the fat tasted rancid, maybe hitting it's experation date (we threw it away and didn't eat it) The Mac and cheese was very over cooked, and tasted a bit sour (Also, went in the garbage) My son enjoyed the fries, he said they were limp and greasy. But that's how he likes it so he can add salt later. Seeing the good reviews, I will leave it up to you to eat here. Maybe they were just having an off day when we ordered there. read more

We stumbled on Smokey's after striking out trying to find two other BBQ joints. It's tucked in a shopping plaza and tricky to find, but worth the effort. The owners are friendly and eager to help. I got the pork ribs with two sides: beans and potato salad. My partner got the pulled pork sandwich, cole slaw, and green beans. I was disappointed there weren't any collard greens. The ribs were plentiful and delicious, though not pink through-and-through. The beans were typical, a little too close to Campbell's pork & beans (lots of brown sugar) for my taste. Coleslaw was minced. Green beans were sturdy. We took our food back to the hotel. The ingredients were fresh and we were happy and would recommend Smokey's to anyone. read more

First I want to lead with the customer service was truly southern hospitality! We got there 10 minutes before they closed and they took great care of us! The Chopped Pork and Beef were both fantastic. I still don't know which one I enjoyed more. The bbq sauce was really unique. It's color had me worried that it would be vinegary but true to their word it was a sweet sauce. While it wasn't the sweetest sauce it was not vinegary in the slightest either so I enjoyed! Others in my group ordered the pork ribs, BBQ chicken and Brunswick stew and all enjoyed! If you are torn on what to eat go with the chopped meats. Those were the biggest hits. Mac and cheese had great flavor but was a little dry. I think that was mainly because we got there at close. If you got there earlier in the day I have no doubt it would be delicious! read more

It looks like an old Southern Shack. That's because it is. This is a true Southern BBQ Eatery, if you've ever been in one you walk in these doors and you'll feel it. They've been there for 30 years, and I can see why. I got to go plate of mild BBQ with green beans and red rice. Portions were large, the young lady that serve me was extremely polite, and I was beyond satisfied with my food. It was absolutely delicious, that used enough sauce to give you the flavor, but didn't over-saturate where that's the only thing you taste. The barbecue by itself is absolutely delicious, and you can definitely taste the authenticity of this food. This one was on the dry side unfortunately and that is always an immediate 'been there-done that-not doing it again' for me. I was disappointed. As well the sauce wasn't my favorite. I like sweet and or spicy sauces as well as a good Carolina. The sauce didn't hit either note, it didn't really have a statement like it was confused about how it wanted to taste so it left me feeling blah. The mac and cheese was ok. We won't return. OK, this place is a hidden gem. My wife and I liked it so much we had them cater our wedding pre-party out on Tybee Island back in 2004. We both live in Brooklyn, NY now, but I still have a mason jar of their sauce that I keep for special occasions when I make wings at home. When I visit Savannah I always go by their place and pick up two canning jars full of sauce to bring home. I wish they would tell me what's in it, but it's amazing. This is just a solid BBQ joint with great smokey ribs and friendly service at a GREAT price. I just love this joint and hope it stays open for a long time to come. I had the pork ribs and if there was any criticism it was neither boneless nor on the bone - it made it a little tough to eat, you couldn't pick it up and it was tricky with a fork. Very solid. Ordered 2 chopped pork plates with fries. The bbq was very good, not greasy and not dry...nice and juicy like it should be. Sauce was good (ketchup base) got the mild and mixed and both were on point. I DO wish they had a mustard base option. Fries were over-seasoned but still good.
