Excellent barbecue. We ordered dinner to go and had a great conversation with the owner while we waited. The smell in the restaurant was overwhelmingly good, and we couldn't wait to get home and crack open our boxes. Someone else came in to pick up their to go order of wings, and we got to see and smell those too. Wow! There isn't another place in Tucson that I know of where you can get smoked wings finished in the fryer. These things looked amazing, and will definitely be on our next order. If it's your first time, try the Tri-tip. You'll think you're in Texas. Give this place a shot when you want barbecue. Tucson needs a good BBQ joint. read more

Food is delicious, but the service is horrible. We were consistent loyal customers but every time we have stopped by, which HAD to be at least twice a month, we felt like an inconvenience to the staff, walked in multiple times with the staff eating in the dining area, look at each other with bothered faces, and no welcome or anything. They also just drop off your food, never ask if we need anything else, never check in making sure things were good, there's practically no service provided beyond ordering at the counter. Which they do ask for a tip, and 20% is standard so I don't mind but for practically no service and nasty attitudes... come on. We won't be going back, very unfortunate because the food is good. Without a doubt best BBQ in town, the brisket should win multiple awards! Had Tri-tips this time which were excellent. Loved the French Fries and the Potato Salad, which was the best Potato Salad that I have ever had anywhere. Whatever sauce was in the wings was great- it is not a buffalo/hot wing and not sickly sweet like most bbq places. The burger and fries were not good at all. The burger was way under cooked not even medium rare (we requested well down) and the fries were soggy. We were visiting Tucson and we found this place in Yelp and we decided to give it a try. That was absolutely awesome, nice and friendly service, delicious food and big portions. We ordered the special of the day, it was two meats pulled pork and ribs, one side (we chose french fries and mac and cheese) and a beverage. This place has some amazing food! My husband and son come to this spot and decided to bring me and let me just say their tacos and bbq are bomb!!! Should have known better when I pulled up and saw the parking lot empty during lunch rush. Where do I start? Service was not cherry-on-top since the beginning. Both employees were unfriendly and seemed in a bad mood. Both staff members also were not dressed adequately for the kitchen and both were wearing slides. Ordered the two meats and two sides. First meat was hot links, not bad flavor, yet it was not even warm! The same thing with the brisket! BBQ was horrible and tasted like ketchup with liquid smoke. Super disappointed, the staff didn't care to give their paying customers food hot enough to get it out of the danger zone. Hot wings I know weren't fresh they tasted old. Macaroni and cheese was flavorless and seemed microwaved. Okra was good, only thing I ate. I think the health department should visit this place, to teach them about serving lukewarm food. Greeted by a happy fun staff that encouraged us to take our time as he could tell we were overwhelmed and wanted 1 of everything on the menu! Staff recommended we do the combo 4meats and 4sides for 2 people. Everything was succulent, and all the flavors slapped! We got hot links, ribs, Tri-tip, and brisket! Mmmm...BBQ!!! Look no further, this is the best BBQ in Tucson! So many places open up here that have no clue what the local culture is, they want to be hip and exclusive and forget that REAL people want REAL food. Smokey Mo has done an amazing job of having delicious and unique food, reasonably priced, just good honest food. I have been here twice already and let me say I love having something new to try every time, it looks like they rotate the menu to keep things fresh. Hey, I would rather have a small menu of stuff done RIGHT than a giant menu of uninspired crap. My first visit I had a pulled pork sandwich with jicama slaw. Jicama slaw...why did I never think of that! Crunchy, tangy, got just enough in each bite. Great "bun integrity" made it easy to eat the juicy pork smothered with delicious sauce that had just enough kick to keep you interested. The very friendly hostess brought it out and it looked...pretty?!? I have never had pretty BBQ, but there ya go!! To the reviewer who that it was too spicy...lol this is Tucson. We're passing through Tucson and wanted to find some good BBQ for dinner. We were not disappointed. This might be the best BBQ we ever had! They have a few tables inside and more outside, and some blues music. We were greeted by the friendliest guy ever who walked us through the menu. We felt right at home, and didn't have to wait long for our food. We ordered the 4 meat/4 side/2 drink combo - the coleslaw was mixed when we ordered, the beans were to die for, and the Mac n cheese and cornbread were perfect choices. The brisket was the BEST ever and the ribs fell off the bone. All smothered in flavorful, thick BBQ sauce. We didn't even come close to finishing it all! To finish off the meal, we ordered the peach cobbler ice cream to take back to our hotel for dessert later. That was amazing, too! You can't go wrong with Smoky Mo's. From the street, Smokey Mo BBQ looks pretty plain. Its plain white building does not draw the eye, but if you get close enough you will start to smell the beautiful smell of meat combined with mesquite smoke. On this first visit I took my girlfriend Meghan, who preference in taste tends to be more toward the sweet while I prefer bold, spicy flavors. From the very first second we walked through the door we were greeted by amazing, and friendly customer service. I ordered for takeout a 2-meat combo plate with brisket and dry rub wings that came with two sides, made-in-house coleslaw and made-in-house mac and cheese and a drink and so did Meghan with rib tips and brisket and fries and made-in-house mac and cheese. As we waited, I was encouraged by the steady stream of patrons that came through the door, and I was impressed by the level of customer service as the friendly host seemed to know the regulars. In that moment all I could think of was: Cheers, where everybody knows your name. Could this be the BBQ version of that I wondered, and the answer is quite possibly. When we arrived home and sat down to eat the smells emanating from the bag had both of us, and our dog Thor, very excited to begin eating. I started with the dry rub wings which had nice but not overstated smokey flavor which did not make me feel as if I had lost out for choosing dry rub over the more traditional sauce method. Then I began to try the sides so as to save my personal favorite in BBQ, brisket, for last. The Coleslaw was perfectly balanced between sweet and tangy without being to much of either while still having a nice crunch from the slaw. While I loved the mac and cheese for the great tasting cheese choice and the not overstated presence of a little bit of spicy both Meghan and I agreed that the liquidy nature of the cheese left us wishing for a thicker sauce to really capture the great flavor. The fries were quite good, being slightly thicker, it was refreshing to see that they still had retained a crispiness. I enjoy slightly salter fries, so these were perfect, but if salty fries bothers you, I suggest asking for light salt. Although I loved the bold zing of the sauce, had they given me that piece of brisket dry, I still would sing its praises to the high heavens. For those, like me, guilty of an obsession with melt-in-your-mouth, falls-apart-at-the-touch-of-a-fork, perfectly-seasoned, fatty, smokey brisket, you may decide that you don't want to leave Smokey Mo BBQ. The brisket for me, absolutely stole the show. Meghan, being not as big of a fan of the fattiness, enjoyed the meat but didn't care for the amount of fattiness. She loved the rib tips for their sweet and tangy sauce and the great mesquite flavor that permeated through the meat. She felt the amount of sauce on the meat was perfect, but she definitely wanted a side of to use as a dipping sauce. I came to Smokey Mo BBQ in an effort to support local black owned businesses and now I am angry with myself. I am angry that I had not come here sooner. I will be returning for their fantastic brisket and am not afraid to say that, having tried many of the other BBQ restaurants in town, Smokey Mo BBQ has set the bar very, very high with their fantastic food and I believe it will be along time before someone matches it. read more

Yes, yes and yes! Was my reaction when I bit into that brisket sandwich. The brisket was perfectly juicy and so tender. The char on the meat really brought out flavor. My friend offered one of the bbq ribs on his plate to me and I happily accepted. That rib was incredibly soft and fall off the bone. I didn't even need to use a knife to separate it from the other ribs. Even the fries were perfectly crispy. I really enjoyed this place. I like how they have an outdoor patio kinda overlooking the mountain in some spots. The guy at the front was also incredibly friendly and the service was fast. Not even 10 minutes and my meal was ready. I recommend this place while you're in Tucson and looking for a great local business and good bbq. read more
