Smokey J's had been open for 39 years (c 1981) so they must be doing something right! I've been a loooong time patron and have yet to be disappointed. Where else can you get a delicious, generous 1/4lb+ chopped beef sandie for just over 5 bucks ($5.75 to be exact)? And, I am PICKY when it comes to Q and particularly chopped brisket...no fatty bits or sinew to be found. As the profoundly wise Mr. Bing would say, "It's a freakin' steal!" Add a side if a side of tasty beans for $1 and a canned sodie pop fop 75 cents and you've got quite the meal. Every bit worth the splurge! The breakfast tacos are some of the best around and their scratch smoked beef jerky is phenom - if they're not sold out. Hey, haters gonna hate. Meh. I just stick with what I know is phenom on the menu. I'm a customer for life...or until they close...whichever comes first. Lol.

It's at the 7-11 gas station

WHOA! This is close to where I work, and my word, I'm so excited to have tried this place for the first time. Today's special was a baked stuffed potato or a pulled pork sandwich. For only $5.00. I chose the sand which. So delicious. Loaded with pulled pork, a little BBQ sauce, not too much, just the right amount. White onion and pickles. So good, so filling. This is a great place to snag a lunch. I can't wait to try more of their items off their menu.

Today was my first and last time here. I am very disappointed the beef smells awful and it's mostly fat.

Today was my first time here and I have to say I'm very disappointed. I bought a pound of beef and it's all going to the trash, it has an AWFUL smell.

The beef is even sliced with the grain instead of across the grain, adding to it's tough long and stringy texture.

Dry BBQ. Only open when they want to be and entitled and rude to their customers. Do not recommend.

If you can't afford Jims Smokehouse this classic at Four Points is a great option for BBQ. Friendly people too.

[From their website] "Cooper's Old Time Pit Bar-B-Que is honored to be the 'Best Of The Best' in the barbecue business and home of the original World Famous "Big Chop." now you can get a taste of Texas Hill Country BBQ that restaurant reviewers have raved about!" The inside seating is grab your own picnic tables or share with others. They have a huge outside dining area with additional seating. Also, they have a bar area to sit at. Order your meats by the pound, get sides, dessert, etc and pay at the end of the line. They do have other merchandise for sale like beef jerky, bbq sauce, etc. Two separate multi-user men and women's restrooms. Complimentary stewed beans, bbq sauce, jalapeño, pickles, onions, and bread. For dinner, I ordered the... Beef Rib - really tender, yet firm enough to stay on the bone. A good beefy bbq flavor and smokiness. Brisket - The brisket was tender, smokey, melt in your mouth delicious! The fat cap was was so good. LOL. I liked the Brisket a lot better than the Beef Rib. Mac-N-Cheese (bacon & jalapeño topping) - the noodles were cooked well and the cheese was cream and perfectly coated each noodle. The crisp bacon & jalapeño topping was free and no extra charge, really boasted this side. Banana Pudding - a classic southern dessert done well. Sweet Tea - We're in Texas, nothing beats the heat better than cold Sweet Tea. Others in my group who ordered said that the Roast Chicken was good. Unfortunately, the smoked Turkey was dry. Thank you Paula for the recommendation. We loved the place. Support your local business!

(4.25 stars) A…read morelong-running Texas barbecue joint known (for better or for worse) as being George W. Bush's favorite, Cooper's largely lived up to its reputation. The restaurant has a classic look (wood, brick, and ducts), and the menu - meats priced by the pound on a chalkboard - adds to the retro appeal. Those meats are cut to order by a pitmaster. After making your selection, you proceed down a cafeteria-style line and pick your sides. Sauce, pickles, and Wonder Bread are free. We opted for some brisket, a jalapeno sausage link, potato salad, and creamed corn. The brisket was tender and flavorful if a bit fatty while the sausage boasted a firm bite and a winning combination of spicy and cheesy. Unexpectedly, the creamed corn ended up being a highlight. If that's a side you usually avoid, Cooper's version may end up converting you. That said, the potato salad was nothing special and the sauce was very tomato-and-vinegar-forward. As to be expected given Cooper's location and reputation, prices are also quite high (as in almost $40 a pound for brisket). That's not outrageous for a "name" BBQ place in Austin though if I had to pay that after waiting in a long line, I might walk away disappointed. Cooper's is not the best Texas BBQ you're likely to find, but it's a pretty damn solid representation thereof.

Order was done in about 10 minutes and pickup was easy. Service overall was great really friendly and knowledgeable for questions asked. The food was delicious. Brisket sandwich had a good mix of beef and fat, crust on the outside, BBQ sauce went well along with the onions. Bread nice and soft too. Noodle Brussels had great flavor however due to the inconsistency in size they were cooked to different softness. I preferred the smaller ones as they weren't crunchy when chewing. We were planning to try one of each taco but they had already run out of the pulled pork. They wrapped each taco individually in aluminum foil to keep it warm which was a nice touch, though they didn't bring out the red and green sauces until we asked for them. Brisket Taco ($9): The brisket was a bit dry but the slice was pretty thick and it paired well with the acidity of the pickles. Carne G Taco ($6): Super cheesy and heavy. The flavors weren't bad but I felt pretty gross after eating one and it left me really bloated.

This spot was close to my hotel, and on my departure day, I decided to have one last hit of Q. It's a big restaurant, and it appears to also be quite the music venue. When I went, a little on the early side for a Friday dinner, there was not a wait and I was sat immediately. My server was attentive, and got me in, fed, and back out in plenty of time to catch my already delayed flight. I ordered their 3 meat combo plate, which also came with two sides, and added on a piece of cornbread. I chose brisket of course, as well as turkey and sausage. The server recommended the serrano pepper spinach (like a creamed spinach) and onion rings, and I took those recs. The best of the three meats was the turkey. Not a good sign. It was moist and tender, though not particularly smokey. Even so, I enjoyed it more than the brisket and sausage, which I would have guessed the reverse when ordering. The brisket was on the dry side and kind of bland, it did not smack of being freshly carved. The Stubbs BBQ sauce helped me eat some of it... now I see why they are famous for their sauce. I had a couple bites of the sausage and pushed it aside, I didn't enjoy their recipe on that at all. It was cooked seemingly well, but the blend of spices and meat they use wasn't pleasant to me. The sides, the onion rings were very crispy which I like, but again... something in the batter. Maybe even the oil they were cooked in, I did not enjoy as much. The spinach was actually quite enjoyable, maybe even a little rich. I think if it were warmer, if might help milden out some of that. It was really thick. The cornbread wasn't worth the add-on. No sweetness or anything to make it memorable. Vessel for butter. The portion was massive, and I had leftover food, but did not take it... and that would have been the case even if I wasn't headed to the airport. I wouldn't recommend this spot.

When I tell you these ribs were a religious experience I am not embellishing. Full disclosure: I do not currently live in the south so I don't consider myself a BBQ connoisseur, but I did spend 4 years in the south and have sampled many BBQ joints in the meantime. Take this review as someone who really enjoys BBQ (and any slow cooked meat for that matter) but who could not list more than 10 BBQ restaurants they have eaten at in the last 5 years. So the beef ribs. Great texture, tender meat but still had a bite to it. Expertly seasoned so they were not wet with sauce but still moist. I would consider 1 beef rib a snack, 2 a small meal. I also tried the chopped brisket (brisket and burnt ends sitting in a soup of BBQ sauce). That was also delicious (and more reasonably priced), but I could have done with slightly less sauce. It really was like a soup and while the sauce was tasty, there was too much of it. I went later in the afternoon (around 2/2:30pm) and got their last two beef ribs so going earlier is better. You order at the open kitchen and then pay at the counter when your food is ready. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, you can take your food and sit at any of their tables of which they have many (this place is pretty big). For fifteen people, the total cost was $425.69. This included delivery costs and taxes, but no tip. It consisted of three meats, two sides, and a dessert along with pickles, onions, bread, and BBQ sauce. There was also a set of utensils delivered, but plates were forgotten, but not a big deal. Brisket - This was definitely the best item eaten of the day. It was tender and juicy while adding the BBQ sauce giving that extra bite. The BBQ sauce was great regardless, a little bit of sweet and smoky flavor going on. Pulled Pork - This was another solid meat choice. I did not think it was as tender as the brisket, but it was still enjoyable especially with that BBQ sauce, which was key throughout the meal. Sausage - This was not bad. The snap on this threw me off a little, but it was not too bad. They were large links and had plenty of flavor. Gouda Mac & Cheese with Smoked Bacon - This was actually penne pasta with little pieces of the bacon. I actually preferred this pasta choice here. It really soaked up the cheese sauce. The sauce was not too over powerful and was just right. Beans with Smoked Bacon - These were not too bad. I thought they were a little liquidity, but the added bacon pieces definitely helped. Banana Pudding - This came in individual cups, which was nice. The pudding was thick with a little meringue or whipped cream present and a few wafer cookies on top. It was a satisfying ending to a very good meal. Will I go back? Yes.
